Casual murder confessionWhen Mondeor SAPS officers found a 41-year-old male who had run out of petrol while driving his mother’s car last Tuesday (2 September), they asked him where his mother was. He replied, “I killed her.” The man was taken to his house two streets down in Hamilton Street, Naturena where his deceased mother, Doreen Sihlali (58) was found with a stab wound. He was arrested, he appeared in court last Thursday and his bail application has been set for 11 September.Work colleagues of Doreen Sihlali were concerned about her when she failed to show up for work the Monday before last, so they went to her house on the Tuesday morning, only to find the gate locked and her vehicle missing. They stopped some Mondeor SAPS officers who were driving past and informed them of their concern. The police officers then decided to go to the station to get their dog unit, as they could not get inside the house and, on their way, came across her stranded son.It had been reported that Doreen Sihlali had spent the night in her vehicle the previous Thursday (28 August), as her son had refused to let her in the house. She alerted the police about the matter the next morning and when they instructed her unemployed son to open the door for her, he told them that he had not heard his mother asking to be let in because the music was too loud. Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, Mondeor SAPS spokeswoman said,” The mother did not want

to open a case at that time.”Bystanders who witnessed the suspect being escorted to the house and put in the police van told tame TIMES that the suspect appeared to have no remorse at all. “He was emotionless and so casual,” one witness said.

Another BlowAquanote Productions and Design Pie Creative Agency will be walking from Pretoria to Bloemfontein on 17 to 21 September. They will walk and camp overnight in order to raise funds for Door of Hope Children’s Mission. The original target was R60 000 but after the response they have received they have put the stakes up and are aiming for R100 000.This whole adventure started when Nkosinathi Manganyi (Aquanote Productions MD and Design Pie CA CEO) was asked what he wanted for his birthday which is on 21 September. “I am grateful for what I currently have, so giving would be the best way to spend my birthday instead of getting spoiled.” Manganyi pitched the idea to his partners and they are behind him all the way to Bloemfontein. Manganyi chose the route, as he went to school in Pretoria. “It made sense to start there;

however, we are going to start at our offices in Bryanston to have a little send-off, where supporters can walk the first 5km with us and those who would like to donate diapers, Purity or anything like that for babies are welcome to do so,” Manganyi said.There are four brave walkers on board so far. Planet Fitness Arcadia has expressed their willingness to provide their facilities for training. The journey will be captured through videography and photography and they will be interacting with the public on social media. “It is for the God of the children - for every baby abandoned there ought to be 100 community members to take on the role of loving and caring for them. No questions are asked but love is given,” Manganyi said. “We need supporters, whether they are passing letters around or bringing awareness to a possible donor. If they are around Pretoria, we would like to have them come and join us at Planet Fitness as we get ready for the walk. We would like everyone to be fit so we can all finish the race and, due to

us camping on the way, they need to come prepared in terms of tents and a lot of water. We’ll have a vehicle with the camera crew in it.”

Another week has gone by and all I can say is that the whole Mondeor High incident has gone from bad to worse. The allegations of Mrs Nicolaou, the principal, being racist that were published in The Saturday Star are ridiculous. Anyone who has met that dear, kind woman will know she is far from racist - and the majority of the school are learners of colour. It does not make sense that if the principal were racist she would stay at the school (she has been there for many years), as the school has mainly learners of colour.To add another blow to Mondeor High, the school suffered a great loss with the passing of Mr Prinsloo last week. Most Mondeor High learners, past and present, will remember him by his signature brown hat and his stern approach. I was taught Afrikaans by him, so his passing came as a great shock to me. I send my deepest condolences to his family and to the school. My prayers will be with them.From what I understand, the learners who said she is racist were confused by her comment that they were “blackening the school”. The definition of blacken in the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary reads: Blacken (vn) sb’s name/reputation/ character – to say unpleasant things that give people a bad opinion of sb.Mrs Nicolaou knows who she is and I think she should not have to defend herself; the response of ex-learners writing letters to The Saturday Star defending her speaks for itself. Mrs Nicolaou is not racist.This is similar to the Daryl Impey saga - his name and reputation was dragged through the mud and now he has to re-build his name and this is what Mondeor High and Mrs Nicolaou will also have to do, re-building reputations that have been blackened by allegations of racism.I would love to hear your thoughts on this issue, so please share with me by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

Foreign mothers abuse South Rand HospitalThe number of babies born to foreign mothers has soared in the South Rand Hospital, rising from 258 in 2011 to 671 in 2012 and 920 in 2013. This was revealed by Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu in a written reply to DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health Jack Bloom’s questions in the Gauteng Legislature. According to Bloom the mothers are mostly from a range of African countries, but babies have also been born to Chinese, Syrian, Pakistan and Indian mothers. “The 920 births to foreign mothers amounts to 30% of the 3057 total births at the South Rand Hospital last year,” Bloom said. According to Mahlangu, “There are general misconceptions about health care services in South Africa which may attract a lot of foreign

nationals; a survey will be conducted to verify what accounts for the high number of non-South African mothers giving birth in SA.” Bloom added that whilst non-South African mothers are classified as full-paying private patients and should pay a fee of R8000, this is very rarely collected. “Refugees and asylum seekers get free treatment, while permanent residents and immigrants with work or study permits, are subject to the normal means test.” “The increasingly heavy load of foreign maternity patients is worrying as our hospitals already operate under huge pressure,” Bloom said, adding: “It appears that some pregnant mothers visit South African specifically to give birth in our hospitals. According to the Department, the numbers of mothers who are not locally resident are being verified.”

Alleged development in Hantamberg StreetClr Paul Smit finally received a response from Graham De Kock, Chief Whip of the DA in the City of Johannesburg, who serves on the Development Planning Section 79 Portfolio, regarding the alleged development in Hantamberg Street, Glenvista. A resident wrote to tame TIMES a few weeks back with concerns that a company called Tshepang Electrical was cleaning and surveying the area in order to build townhouses. He was concerned, as the area is full of flora and fauna and pointed out also that the street might be unable to handle more traffic.De Kock said, “It would appear that there are no Town Planning applications for either Erf 1794 or Erf 1793 in Glenvista. Both these properties are adjacent to each other and are bounded by Hantamberg Street and Bellairs Drive respectively. They are also the only two large tracts of vacant land in the area which are bounded by the Klein Klip Rivier.” “The fact, however, that there are no town planning applications in for these sites does not mean that someone is not in the feasibility stage of a proposed townhouse development. I would suggest that the community does some more investigating to find out who the planners and architects are for this project as I would guess that a surveyor would not go to all the trouble to survey the sites without first having obtained a brief from his client. Another suggestion is to get an estate agent to do a deeds search to find out who the owners of the two sites are.”tame TIMES is in the process of investigating the matter further.

Reward OfferedRewards offered for Lena Street attackersFamily of the elderly married couple, aged 79 and 80 years of age, who were brutally attacked in their house in Lena Street, Linmeyer on 29 August, are offering a reward of a substantial amount for each suspect who is convicted.The 79- and 80-year-old couple were attacked in their home of 42 years between 8:30 and 9:00. They were stabbed, strangled and kicked. The 80-year-old man is in an induced coma in ICU and the 79-year-old woman is currently in hospital.It is believed the suspects are black. The first suspect is of average height and build, the second is slightly taller, the third is obese and the last one is small and had a red blanket wrapped around their body. Beautifying trash

In a joint venture, Upcycle, Green Peace and SOJO are in the process of beautifying 30 metres of wall on the premises of Booysens Hotel, by making a mosaic out of used bottle-tops.Owner of Upcycle, Winnie McHenry, told tame TIMES that the ultimate goal is to turn the whole area into a green market. “I chose this area (the South), as through working with SOJO, I have seen how businesses and individuals are so eager to get involved and are worried about the environment.”The process started on 30 August when McHenry drew the picture. The next day volunteers started gluing the bottle-tops on the wall with silicone, using their own creativity. The full picture will take a few more weekends to become visible.“So far we have used 15jmt packets full of used bottle tops. Nampak offered to sponsor bottle tops but that defeated the objective of using trash to create art. I walked through the veld and manage to collect many bottle tops,” McHenry added.Once the mosaic is complete tame TIMES will update our readers with a new photograph of this spectacular work of art. Combined efforts create successKlipSA held their 5th AGM at Southview Lodge while SOJO hosted their 7th AGM at Joburg Expo Centre.Representatives of interested parties attended the two separate meetings to hear the successes and challenges of the past year which were highlighted by Chair Andrew Barker (KlipSA) and Chair Richard Bennet (SOJO). Reports on specific activities and projects of the past year were presented and the audited financials were openly displayed for comment. KlipSA voted in their executive committee comprising of one resignation, one alternate for a year and one new addition to the Executive. There were 11 new members. SOJO voted in their board of directors which included one alternate for the year. The precinct representatives had one resignation but no replacement. SOJO welcomed two new members, namely Southview Lodge and FNB Stadium. Andrew Barker presented the “Seed to Feed” project at both AGMs. Barker informed the attendees that, “Through the year the two organisations have been working together to promote economic growth and development in the southern areas of Johannesburg-the primary focus has been to grow and develop the ideas for the establishment of future natural and organic based agricultural activities serving the needs of local communities by providing business opportunities for small, medium and large corporate entities. Klerksdorp resident, Ilze Saunders, was announced as the 2014 Miss Earth South Africa last Thursday at Palazzo Hotel, Montecasino. The down-to-earth beauty said that she is delighted to have been afforded this opportunity and cannot wait to continue making a difference.The BA Communications student will take over from former Miss Earth SA, Ashanti Mbanga, who has left big shoes to fill. Mbanga told tame TIMES she will complete her studies in Transport Economics at the University of Johannesburg and is already working with the Gauteng Department of Transport with implementing the use of bicycles in the city, adding that her reign as Miss Earth SA has forever changed her life. The four elements and co-ambassadors accompanying Saunders on a green journey are: Steffani Alexander (first runner-up), Michillay Brown (third runner-up), and Roxanne Watson (fourth runner-up). Winchester Hills resident, Nita Kandasamy, has made the community of the South very proud by placing in the top 16. LettersWhat is wrong with teenagers today?

What on earth is wrong with teenagers today? Do they think it is fun or heroic to restrain a helpless animal and kick it to death – when it is completely unable to defend itself? All because of a silly Matric day celebration. It is sickening and makes a person wonder about the future of this country. Surely someone was on the scene and could have stopped this barbaric and appalling act. Where on earth were the teachers and compassionate pupils – too scared to get involved? What punishment is appropriate for such disgusting behaviour? I know what I would have done!

The JOY dogs attended the St Mary’s Anglican Church fete recently, as they love visiting community events and being showered with attention. As usual, they were in demand as some people had never seen Old English sheepdogs before - so it was a real treat for them, especially the children.

Last Saturday, protesters dressed up in provocative and skimpy attire for the Zoo Lake Slutwalk, one of many held around the world since the infamous 2011 comment of the Toronto Police, “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.”Of course victims should not be blamed for the crimes of those who brutalise them – rape is a male problem. Rapists are always responsible for their actions and women or girls should be able to wear miniskirts on taxis or bikini tops in public without being attacked. Even if a man sees a woman walking drunk and naked down the town’s main street at midnight and rapes her, he is still guilty of rape.Unfortunately though, not all the male citizens of our country are men of honour. To avoid being raped, it is wise for women to dress modestly and to take care of their personal safety. Car-owners, to avoid car theft, need to lock their doors and windows when

parking their vehicles. Home-owners, to avoid burglary, need to activate their alarms when going on holiday. Tragically, in South Africa, even babies, children and grandmothers are raped. Rapists commonly break into homes, ransack them and rape any women and girls they find. The most vulnerable person in society is the powerless individual whose dignity has been stolen. That is why the Slutwalk is a very controversial way of protesting rape, with women voluntarily giving up their own dignity. They could choose to portray themselves as human beings with hearts, souls and minds as well as bodies; but, instead, they attract male sight-seers with all the wrong intentions.

I am saddened by the need to convey this bad news. Our family often drive past this house in Cathedral Peak Street, Glenvista. For several weeks now there is no sign of an owner, or anybody at all, for that matter, and the house appears to be abandoned.There are two dogs there that are in dire need of food, water and possible medical attention. My wife decided to take food and water to these two dogs, which appeared to be famished as they gulped the food down. More than a month ago, I noticed a completely inebriated man lying paralytic on the ground outside this house, with the car door open, the keys in the ignition and a bottle of liquor next to him. I had also seen this man park his car in the driveway on a few occasions before that. These two dogs have probably been left alone for the past month and are now skin and bones. The catch-22 of this saga is that either way these two dogs may end up with shortened lives. I have called JHB SPCA to investigate this situation. They are both lovely dogs and perhaps some readers may want to contact the SPCA to adopt them.

Gysie het altyd sy oë gerol as ons kleinkinders op Fashion Police sit, want hy kan so ‘n bombastiese, swierige persoonlikheid nie verdra nie. Ek het weer in my mou gelag vir haar op-die-man-af kommentaar. Soos sy dit gestel het, sy sê bloot wat almal dink. Ek dink die nuus het my veral geskok, omdat dit my laat besef het dat ons almal se uurglas-sand besig is om uit te loop. Ek en Gysie is ook al fossiele, en baie dankbaar vir ons jare saam, maar ek wil net nie die lewe as vanselfsprekend aanvaar nie.

CrimeJustice served on rapistW/O Klaasen attained the successful conviction of a 42-year-old rapist for a case that occurred along Old Vereeniging Road, Southfork in 2005.The suspect was convicted to 10 years for rape, 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, five years for kidnapping and five years of direct imprisonment. He was also ruled unfit to possess a firearm on 2 September by the Johannesburg Regional Court. r50 000 worth of CaT found

A 26-year-old suspect was arrested by Sgt Tsolo and Cst Monama of Mondeor SAPS in Liefde ‘n Vrede on 1 September for possession of drugs. He was found with Cat with an estimated street value of R50 000.

Driver did not see pedestrianA man in his thirties was killed on the night of 1 September after he was hit by a car on the N12 near Southgate in Mondeor. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find the patient lying on the grass between the two highways. Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had already succumbed to severe injuries. The driver of the light motor vehicle fortunately did not sustain any injuries. He driver later told SAPS that he apparently did not notice the man running across the highway, and was not able to stop in time.

Fake plates, dagga and an unlicensed firearmThree suspects were arrested for possession of dagga and an unlicensed firearm in La Rochelle on 2 September by W/O Nkabinde and Cst Malatji from Moffatview SAPS.The officers were patrolling when they spotted a green Chevy Spark with three men in it parked along 8th street. When the members made a U-turn and approached the car, the man seated in front tried to jump out and

run away. The police grabbed him before he could escape and, after searching him, found a Norinco 9mm without a serial number that was loaded with five rounds of ammunition. On searching the car, they found the car’s real registration plate - FDW 407 FS – and realised that the number-plate on the car - VNP 093 GP - was a fake one.Thirty seven sachets of dagga, with a street value of R500, were also found.

Different kind of crusadingCash Crusaders in Main Street, Rosettenville was robbed on 1 September at 8:00. Four to six males stormed into the store, robbed the security guard of his firearm and assaulted the employees, stealing a large amount of equipment.Cst Rebecca Bila, Moffatview SAPS spokeswoman told tame TIMES, “All the suspects were armed, but no shots were fired. The value of the equipment that was stolen is R200 000 and a case of business robbery has been opened at Moffatview SAPS.”ER24 paramedics responded to the call and found the employees sitting inside the shop, visibly shaken. “Fortunately no-one sustained any serious injuries,” Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesman said.The five patients were treated for their injuries and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Sports clubs: tata ma chanceThe National Lotteries Board (NLB) would like to invite qualifying organisations that support the development of sport at grassroots level to apply for funding.Charlotte Thabang Mampane, Chief Executive Officer of the NLB said the scope of the funding programme is in line with government policy to support all sporting codes in South Africa. The NLB allocates a total of close to R2 billion each financial year in funding to various qualifying organisations covering all three sectors including charities, arts and culture organisations and sporting entities.“We would like to take this opportunity to encourage all interested schools and clubs to forward their application to the NLB as early as possible, observing the funding criteria and procedures to avoid disappointment. Failure to comply with the regulations and prescribed guidelines will result in the application automatically being disqualified,” Mampane said. We would also like to reiterate the fact that annually the NLB receives requests for funding amounting to more than R70 billion, a figure that is well in excess of the funds available for distribution.” The NLB will give preference to sports clubs and no-fee schools (Quintile 1,2 and 3) in poor, previously disadvantaged and rural communities that support capacity building (training of coaches and technical officials), universal access to facilities and provision or upgrading of access facilities for people with disabilities. “South Africa has also demonstrated at the Common Wealth Games, held recently in Scotland, that we have a wealth of talent and it is imperative that we support the development of our sporting talent from an early age,” concluded Mampane.Application forms are available at the NLB head offices in Pretoria or online at www.nlb.org.za

Fierce competition for JHB Spar Race

The launch of the JHB SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge and 5km Fun Run, which will take place on 12 October at the Wanderers Club in Illovo, was held last week. Sonja Laxton, one of South Africa’s most successful runners and the designer of the course, was present and shared her healing process after being knocked over by a vehicle last year. The comical and delightful Phalula twins entertained guests with their competitive yet playful jokes.There is fierce competition for line honours among South Africa’s elite road runners. Diana-Lebo Phalula is virtually assured of winning the Grand Prix, and receiving the keys to her own Nissan Micra, but a number of runners could finish second on the ladder and win a cheque for R50 000. Among those jostling for second place are three-times Grand Prix winner, Rene Kalmer, Phalula’s twin sister Lebogang, who finished third in the Pretoria race after winning the Durban race a week before, and last year’s Grand Prix winner Mapaseka Makhanya. Irvette van Zyl, who has won the Grand Prix twice, has made a late surge, winning the Pretoria race in record time, and if she maintains her current form, she could pose a real threat to the front-runners.The 10km route takes the runners along Corlett Drive and Oxford Road as far as Riviera Road in Killarney, before zig-zagging back through some of Johannesburg’s leafiest suburbs. The 5km route meanders through the plush suburbs of Illovo, Melrose, Birdhaven and Atholl-Oaklands, giving runners a chance of peeking at some of the most beautiful gardens in Johannesburg.The first 15 000 to register will receive a free race T-shirt and the first 15 000 to finish will receive a medal and a goodie bag. There are wonderful prizes on offer, including a lucky draw for a Nissan Micra, the Bring-a-Buddy competition, where an entrant and her friend can win New Balance shoes, and the schools competition, where the school with the most

entrants can win prizes from electronics giant Mustek.The Johannesburg Challenge coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and proceeds from the race will go to Reach for Recovery, a support group for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Entries for the race close on September 27, although late entries will be accepted between 9 October and 12 October.
