Summary of whole class data

Page 4: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Main points of whole class data

• The subjects we surveyed didn’t think that unsuccessful people were worth saving. For example, people didn’t want to save the Bricklayer because of his occupation but after reading his biography, they discovered he had a family and decided that was more important than someone’s occupation.

• They also thought that wealthy people were greedy and wouldn’t contribute anything to society. However, in the case on the Wealthy Society Woman, she did contribute to society and once the subjects discovered this, many of them chose her the second time

Research Question 1

• Social Concept: Affinity• Question: Are people who like football

more likely to save the college football player?

• Question #4 in survey• Conclusion: We found that most people

who said they considered themselves a four on our sports fan scale chose to save the football player the first time.

Page 15: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Research Question 2•Social Concept: Stereotypes

•Questions:

1.) Are people more likely to save the medical doctor if they believe that they have one of the most important professions?

2.) Will most people not pick Miss America because she is stereotyped as snobby and stuck up?

•Questions # 5,6,7,8 in survey

•Conclusion:

1.) We found that most people did save the medical doctor at first but then almost all changed their minds after finding out that he was planning on committing suicide. They said that he wouldn’t be able to help other people out when he was going through problems in his own life.

2.) We found that most people classified Miss America as either snobby and stuck-up or just an average American girl, but few thought of her to be nice. That explains why few people saved her the first time, but after hearing that she was giving back to her community and contributing to charities, most people changed their minds and chose to save her.

Page 16: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Research Question 3• Social Concept: Social and Cultural Values

• Question: If religion is important to people, will they most likely save the minister?

• Questions # 3

• Conclusion: We found that few people saved the minister even though many people said that they were religious. Many of them said that they didn’t pick him because he was already going to Heaven anyways. Others changed their minds and decided not to save him when they found out he was not of the same religion as them or the religion they expected him to be of.

Page 17: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Conclusion of Research Questions

Reflections:

- Both Research Questions 1 and 2 proved to be true. Most people who enjoyed watching or playing football saved the college football player. And most people stereotyped the Medical Doctor and Miss America, but changed their minds after they discovered the stereotypes of these people were not accurate.

- Research Question 3 did not get the response we were expecting. Even though many said they were religious, they did not save the minister the first time.

Page 18: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Results: Cognitive Dissonance • Most people we surveyed picked the doctor the first time. However, when

they found out more about the peoples personal lives the votes went down by 22.

• Miss America and the Minister were big stereotypes. More people picked Miss America in the second trial when people found out her personal life, and how she helped a lot of people and donated to charities. The Minister, however, went down by 11 votes. We think this is because people stereotyped him and thought he was a catholic minister and when they found out he wasn’t of their religion or the religion they expected him to be, some people didn’t save him.

• In the first trial, few people picked the college football player. However, in the second trial he went up by ten votes. Most people said that they chose him the second time because his brother was the 12-year-old boy and it would be terrible to separate them from each other.

Page 19: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Results in DetailMedical Doctor: Most people were thrown into cognitive dissonance with the medical doctor because when they heard of his occupation, they thought he was worth saving. However, when they found out more about his personal life, they decided that he was mentally unstable and therefore no longer worth saving. So even though they believed that being a medical doctor was an important occupation and a doctor would be worth saving, they disregarded this belief and changed their actions by not choosing the doctor the second time because of his personal life.

Page 20: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Results in Detail•Miss America: Many people were thrown into cognitive dissonance with Miss America because they believed that she was snobby and stuck up just like her stereotype so they didn’t pick her the first time. But after they had discovered that she money to charities and contributed good things to society, many chose to save her the second time, even though their actions did not go along with their belief that Miss America is snobby and stuck-up and should not be saved.

•Minister: Many people were thrown into cognitive dissonance with the Minister because many of the people who said they were very religious did not choose to save him. And when those who did save him the first time found out he was not a catholic minister like they had stereotyped a minister to be, they didn’t pick him the second time. Their religious beliefs did not go along with their actions because they did not save him.

Page 21: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Results in Detail• College Football Player: Most people were thrown into cognitive

dissonance with the college football player. Those that did not choose him the first time because they didn’t believe that playing football was that important, decided to pick him the second time when they found out that he was the 12-year-old boy’s brother, and they didn’t want to split the two brothers up. Though they had a belief that a football player was not that beneficial to society, they went against that belief and changed their actions by saving him and making an exception to this belief because he had a brother, and it was more important that they stay together.

Page 22: Survey Project For Psychology[1]

Conclusion of Results

Cognitive dissonance played a big role in almost every single case in this study. Most people chose to save those who they stereotyped to be the most beneficial to society but when they found out that these people were not who they expected them to be or they found out something about these people that they didn’t like, they made an exception to their belief and changed their actions by saving or not saving them.
