Senioritis (n) is the continual lack of interest towardsschool and its related activities exhibited mostly in 12thgrade students This is a painful disorder and verycontagious Primary contributor is the large amount of work forcedupon the seniors at a point in time when they areoverwhelmed with college decisions, graduationpreparations and AP examsL

DEMOGRAPHICS/STATISTICS 2 out of 3 seniors have it 95% of Senioritis cases are diagnosed in North America Most commonly found in people ages 16-18 years of age Equally common in Males and Females Males are 85% more likely to develop the disorder at an earlier month in theschool year than females. Approximately 10% of both males and females who develop this will fail one ortwo of their senior year classes. 68% of students who experience senioritis miss more than 5 days of schooldue to the side effects of this disorderD 3. ANXIETY DISORDERSenioritis falls in the realm of Anxiety DisorderGeneralized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by the following:A. Excessive anxiety and worry (apprehensive), occurring more days thannot for at least several weeks about a number of events or activitiesB. The person finds it difficult to control the worry.C. The anxiety and worry are associated with three (or more) of thefollowing six symptoms (with at least some symptoms present for moredays than not for the past 2 months). Only one item is required inyoung adults. 1. restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge 2. being easily fatigued 3.difficulty concentrating or mind going blank 4.irritability 5. muscle tension 6. sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or have restless, unsatisfying sleep)L 4. SOMATOFORM DISORDER Senioritis also falls into the realm of a Somatoform Disorder Disorder in which symptoms take a bodily form without apparentphysical cause Seniors may exhibit symptoms of an illness such as a headacheor sore throat in which there is no physical cause Symptoms generally appear the night before or morning of a bigproject, test or school event. The impact causes them to missschool.V 5. 3 DSDeviant- straying from the norm Lack of energy to attend regular classes, decrease participation inclassroom and extracurricular activities, lack of focus orconcentration on class lectures, forgetting homework assignmentsincluding making up lies about why it could not be done andincreased time spent during the day in a daydream-like state ofmind.L 6. 3DSDysfunctional- not functioning normally Missed or late assignments being turned in, lower gradesbeing reported by over 95% of affected students, andabsenteeism at an all-time high for the school with 90% of theabsent students being seniors. Extreme cases reported thebeginning of dangerous behaviors such as smoking anddrinking which is clearly dysfunctional and many times illegalat that age. 7. 3 DSDistressful- causing distress, anxiety and strain Students with Senioritis can be heard sighing in classrooms andvocal exclamations such as I am sick of this class. There werephysical signs as well including fist pounding on desks andslamming of locker doors. There was also increase in actual breaktime spent in the bathrooms and increased frequency of trips to thebathroom. The distress could also be seen in memory loss andblank stares by the senior students. 8. IMPACT OF SENIORITISThoughts Students are constantly daydreaming and their thoughts arenot focused on the present but rather focused ongraduation, summer vacation and collegeFeelings Feelings of listlessness, frustration, laziness and an extremedesire to do nothing but stay in bed!Behavior Behavior is irresponsible and risky such as calling in sick,missed homework assignments and increased partying 9. CURE AND TREATMENTOnce a Diagnosis is made of Senioritis, there are three treatmentoptions available according to accepted protocol: Treatment Option #1 is based on both drug therapy (takingvitamins to improve the immune system) to help the bodyrecover from lack of sleep and cognitive behavioral therapytechniques. This would help the patient become aware of theirirrational thinking and replace it with new ways of thinkingV 10. CURE AND TREATMENT Treatment Option #2: Group Therapy with other Seniorssuffering from Senioritis. The group therapy would includetalks by College representatives on the importance ofremaining focused and complete the Senior year strongly. 11.
