Summer Term 1 2019 KINGSDALE NEWSLETTER
What an amazing term it has been! We have enjoyed trips to Andorra, celebrated Number Day and The Dance Troupe were awarded 1st Place in their Contemporary Dance Competition!

NSPCC Number Day
This year, Kingsdale participated in the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Children) Number Day, on the 15th February 2019. I am pleased to announce,
through people dressing in number and mathematics related-clothing, we raised almost
£1,000 for the charity! A massive thank you to the students that made it happen.
More than just raising money for the NSPCC and its worthwhile cause, Number Day saw
people engaging in a treasure hunt and solving maths questions to find the prize. We
again are pleased with the feedback we received and look forward to celebrating Number
Day next year!

Kingsdale’s Team Andorra 2019 - Reaching the Highest Heights
The group this year consisted of an increasing number of snowboarders, which has become
extremely popular in recent years. On this occasion the group stayed in a camp in one of the
parishes in Andorra. We were very fortunate to have three days of fresh snow which made
the skiing and snowboarding experience even better! Overall, the conditions of the snow,
the hotel accommodation, the choice of food throughout the week, both on and off the
slopes, were first class!
The evening’s activities included ice-skating,
bowling, a quiz night and a General
Knowledge Activity about Andorra. All of
this added to the thrill of being on the snow!
House System — Trip to Andorra!
Tales from the Andorra Slopes - Easter
2019
The ski trip to Andorra was a truly incredible experience. For someone who has only ever
been skiing on dry slopes, it was amazingly accommodating of my lack of experience and I
had an extraordinary time! I can clearly see how I have improved and the mountains were
breathtakingly beautiful. I can still conjure hauntingly picturesque images of tall, white
mountains interrupted by swathes of army green pine. The feeling was exhilarating – as
close as I will ever be to flying, and I am so grateful for the opportunity. The hotel was
clean, the rooms were spacious, and there were many different meal options for people
with dietary intolerances or preferences.

Humanities - iPads and The MaP Room
The Geography Department: iPads
The Humanities faculty have embraced the opportunities that come with interactive
learning technologies. The Geography department have been using the iPads to allow
students to conduct their own investigations into life in other countries. By finding
their own social and economic data as well as photos from real families, the students
have been able to reach their own conclusions about what life is really like elsewhere
around the world.
The RE Department: Meditation & Prayer (MaP) Room
The RE department has been successful in securing a Meditation & Prayer (MaP)
Room in the state-of-the-art new Gym building, that replaces the old Gym block.
This will be for the spiritual, emotional, psychological and cultural wellbeing of
staff and pupils. It is situated on the top floor in the building and will be used as
a dedicated space for reflection, prayer and devotion. The Art department and
their students are helping with appropriate décor. Various interested staff and
pupils are helping to plan other aspects of outfitting and maintaining the room. It
is anticipated that use will begin after the half-term by groups already involved
in relevant activities, such as Christian and Muslim prayer groups, yoga and
meditation.

Science - STEM Girls at King’s College London!
Engineering Course at King’s College London!
We are very proud of our three, Year 9 Girls who were selected for an engineering
course at King’s College. Students from all over the country applied to get a place on
this course.
The purpose of entering this competition, was to encourage our female students to
become future engineers. From left to right, Janii Henry-Jones, Ami Goswami and
Josie Hopwood in Year 9 have attended Engineering Masterclasses at King’s College
in the Strand, London. Along with other students from various schools in London,
they studied areas such as bionic arm, artificial intelligence, biomedical, drug testing
and lighting.
As well as covering these topics, they met famous engineers from around the world,
like Carlos Cueto (a haptics engineer) and Pavlina Akritas (a light engineer).
Using various materials and coding via computers, they remade and explored certain
aspects e.g. bionic arm using elastic bands and cardboard, brain imaging, cold/warm
hues and haptics.
Science Space Faraday Challenge
Year 8 Girls from Kingsdale participated in the Science Space Faraday Challenge hosted
in East Dulwich. Teams from different schools participate in a challenge to design a
space craft. The girls collaborated to create a space craft for future space travel. Their
team work was exemplary and their presentation was really appreciated by the Sponsors.

English - Special Visit from Book Bus!
The Book Bus
On Tuesday, 14th May 2019, our school had the chance to get a special visit from the Book
Bus, a wonderful library on wheels organised by Browns Books for Students. The Year 7
playground suddenly became the centre of attention when the purple bus arrived in the
morning. The top deck has been transformed into a mobile showroom with 17 bespoke
shelves displaying over 4000 physical books. With mobile stock scanners, students were
able to enjoy browsing the books and scan titles to create selections for our libraries.
Selected Year 7, 8 and 9 students had the chance to visit the bus during their English lessons
and by the end of the day, we had more than 300 books scanned and added to our library
wish list! Librarians will be busy selecting the most popular choices on the list and will look
forward to hearing your suggestions, especially if you did not get the chance to visit the bus
on this occasion.
Thank you to all the teachers and students who participated and recommended books. Also,
a big thank you to Wiktor Morawski in Year 9, one of our library prefects, for helping
throughout the day.
