Dear Students, Welcome to a new university year!!How exciting!!You are getting closer to your graduation day, and before you know it, university days will be nothing but a memory…So, my students, today is your chance to create beautiful, memorable moments. This month’s cover story features LoYAC with their motto: “Today is in our HANDS”.And indeed it is. The Loyacees believe in it, and thus they live by it and make it happen. They work, they help, they volunteer, they enjoy while giving joy. And you can be a Loyacee whether you join their organization or not. Today, you can just study or you can decide to learn;you can just learn or decide to explore your talents;you can do what makes you, and you alone, happy;or you can do what makes many around you happy; You can just smile or you can be an active source of positivity! I personally never regretted anything except the things I did not do, the moments that I took for granted instead of turning them into memories. My students, university days are some of the greatest days in our life, so take benefit from every moment, from every opportunity, and turn them into lasting memories which will be forever cherished. May your year be filled with memorable success,Good luck with your studies, Till the next issue,

Zeina Mokaddam

It’s 14 years since we published our first issue, and now every month STUDENTALK reaches over 50,000 students in print, (verified by PARC and IPSOS studies), and 30,000 online. We’ve long been ranked as the #1 student magazine in Kuwait, and we’re proud to say that we still hold the top spot and remain the only magazine that has direct interaction with students – a fact that gives us a unique insight in to how they think.

Do you ever have those days when you get an idea that you want to accomplish but you can’t make the first step because you need a magic kick such as motivation to start working on the idea and get to your goal? You start to search in blogs, videos, quotes, pictures “How to be motivated?” or “A key to motivation” but all you get is a waste of time and no progress in making your idea come to life. What if you never get that motivation? What if you never get enough of motivation to seek your goal?

The consequences are:

• Someone else who relies on the discipline would get to your goal.

• You would stay in the shadow again.

Motivation is an excuse for you to stay friends with your laziness. When a person lives by a discipline, he wastes no time because a schedule requires him to start working on his dream. I’ve been there. As a student who studies journalism, I’m required to write on different subjects and I have a deadline. I’m not always motivated because, when life is rushing, you have no time to “Google” for motivation. The first time I learned that was when I had to write a short story on a subject “A tale of one picture”. As it was my first writing task at the university that I needed to present in front of the whole group during the next class. I wanted it to be touching, creative and with the moral. Days had passed and I didn’t have any ideas or any motivation that could help me to write the story. The deadline got closer and closer. I had nothing else to do but sit and write. I started with a word. Then a sentence.

Step by step I visualized my story and felt like I was in a parallel universe where I saw and lived at the same time and world as my characters were. Words came to life on my notebook. White pages were filled with the black ink. Voila! The short story was created.

So, in reality, what keeps us from doing what we want to do is not the lack of motivation but the idea of it in other words – our laziness. True motivation could come during the work itself. Once you discipline yourself to take the first step, ideas will invade your mind.

It’s quite difficult to actually “forget” University even years after graduation, but it’s rare to actually have a lot of good memories that you can look back on after you have graduated! Of course, there are many different ways for someone to remember their university days but here are five great ways for you to have some amazing memories while also getting involved on campus!

Write in a local university publicationLet’s face it: Writing isn’t really everyone’s cup of tea, but why not take a chance and see just how good you are? The universities here offer extra help so, if you’re worried about your English being a little weak or if you have any problems with grammar, then simply go to them and they will be more than willing to assist you with anything! Once it’s published, keep a copy and it will serve as a memory in the future.

Make a movie starring your friends and favorite places! This could sound like something slightly chaotic, especially if you don’t have the necessary materials for this. With that said, you can simply use your phone and take random videos of your favorite places on campus or of you just fooling around with your friends! Copy those videos onto your computer at home or on a hard drive that you can have for many more years. Even though this may sound like a hassle right now, it will surely be worth it in the future.

Teach someone somethingEven though there are a lot of fun memories at university, you have to keep in mind that you’re there to learn. There are many people who face trouble with certain subjects or may be confused about a part so there is no harm in helping others especially since there will come a time where you will be in need of help as well! Teach someone, help them, and they will be grateful for it.

Sit in on a lecture completely out of your fieldExtra knowledge is never harmful so why not take a quick break from your own field in order to learn something new about a major that is completely unrelated? It will help your mind breathe a little since it’s not the same field you’ve been learning everyday while you will come out of the lecture with at least one new piece of knowledge. This is a great way to understand more about different things happening in the world.

5 ways to remember University in the Future!

Remembering University

Apply for internshipsUniversities usually require you to do an internship during your years there but why not take the extra step and try seeing if you can find a job for the summer? Putting aside the fact that this will surely help you on your CV, it will also help you on a personal level as you will learn about how things work in a real-life environment. Everyone wants their breaks and holidays but this will be something you can look back on once you begin your career and be proud that you did it.

Talent Competition

The Winner for

July/ August 2015Talent Competition:

Ghita Mohammed

Highighting Last Month's Winner

Are you a student in Kuwait with a talent that deserves to be seen? If so then here is your chance, STUDENTALK wants you! Email us at: [email protected]

Tell us more about yourselfMy name is Ghita Mohammed and I am 19 years old. I am currently studying Business Marketing at the Arab Open University. My journey with music started at a very young age and music plays a big part in influencing and shaping me as an individual. I listen to a wide range of music which varies from indie rock, R&B, pop, to almost every other genre. I have always been part of the arts whether it came to singing, dancing, or acting and the stage is a place where I feel you can express whatever you feel and think.

What is your talent?I sing, dance, and act but I focus on singing mostly. I aim to develop my voice further and hopefully start recording my own tracks to share my love of music with everyone.

How did you develop your talent?Practice and more practice. Also, it is very important to listen to your audience, friends, or family about what they think about your performance and how you can improve yourself.

What are your future plans?I recently opened for an international band called “Outlandish” here in Kuwait and I hope to get more opportunities like that. Also, I want to record my own tracks and get not only my message but the message of so many others through music.

Who supported your talent? My friends and family. They push me whenever I feel like quitting or lose hope.

Did you encounter any obstacles?I was stuck for a while and did not feel any motivation or inspiration. I constantly kept thinking that there was no more room for improvement but every time I used to watch other singers on Youtube or any TV shows, I felt like I had to get up and start practicing again.

Any last words for the readers?Don’t let anyone bring you down. There will be a lot of obstacles in pursuing what you want to achieve. If you believe in what you do and you love it, then go for it.

Tell us more about yourselfMy name is Rateb Shehadeh and I am 20-years-old. I’m an Communications and Media and Marketing major at AUK. After graduation, I want to move on in order to continue my Masters in Canada. I also want to start working somewhere I would enjoy and is a very high-paid job.

What is your talent? My talent is drawing and painting. I like expressing all of my thoughts through my art.

How did you develop your talent?Around two years ago in Jordan, I went to drop my sister at an art studio so she can develop this talent. I never drew or even tried to before. When we went there, I ended up registering at the studio and my sister didn’t! I got inspired and in my first week even though I struggled to even draw basic shapes. I didn’t know I had a talent in me. That studio brought out the talent and I shocked the instructors by what I was capable of drawing. Since then, I completed around 5 paintings and I realized you just need something to make you feel aware about your talents and you need to keep practicing until you feel satisfied with what you do.

What are your future plans?I want to start drawing around 2-3 paintings per month. When I have the number of paintings that I want, I am planning to hopefully begin displaying them in galleries or even have my own gallery to display them there. Perhaps, after that, I can sell them if I feel ready to let go for them.

Who supported your talent? My parents and the feedback that I used to get from my friends and people around me alone was an inspiration for me to keep on going.

Did you encounter any obstacles? In the beginning, I did. There is always an obstacle in the beginning. I faced a lot of them when I entered the course because I didn’t know that I was capable of drawing anything. I kept working on it until I was able to draw successfully. I also fac problems whenever I started a new painting because I do not get satisfied easily and that is an obstacle in itself.

Any last words for the readers? We all have talents, whether or not we are aware of them. There is nothing wrong with trying and you should keep trying until you get satisfied with yourself and what you do.

Tell us more about yourselfMy name is Noura Al-Shammari, 21 years old and am a Graphic Design Major Student at the American University of Kuwait. I am very interested in art and music and consider them both very important in my life.

What is your talent?I enjoy painting and drawing and it has shaped me into the person that I am today.

How did you develop your talent? My mom draws so, since I was a kid, I drew with her a lot. I attended AIS for high school and we could only take one elective there. So, I was taking music but I decided to develop my drawing by dropping it and taking art instead.

What are your future plans?I’m applying for art school for my Masters when I graduate and see where the road takes me from there!

Who supported your talent? My mom supported me most of all because it was her passion as well. A lot of people in high school stopped me from taking a different path when I was so close to giving up and showed me that this was the road I was meant to take and not let it go to waste.

Did you encounter any obstacles?Yes, my art teacher wrote on the syllabus that “good is not good enough” and so I ended up trying very hard and it became something I felt forced to do rather than something I enjoy.

Any last words for the readers?Listen to a lots of music! It can open your mind to different apects and clear any type of stress. With that, you are able to concentrate more on your passion, such as it does for art with me. Also, check out my art on my blog! www.nouraalshammariportfolio.blogspot.com

The Local Scene Artist of the Month

Tell us a little about yourselfMy name is Ali Sleeq and I’m a Lebanese who has been living in Kuwait all my life. I play the bass but I don’t consider myself a bassist; I consider myself a Blues man. I’ve been playing for 15 years in Beirut and in Kuwait as well as Dubai and other countries. Now, I have a blog about Blues while also being a part of the Blues Foundation in the States. I’m a supporting member of the National Blues Museum. Basically, you can say that I’m a Blues fanatic.

How has this journey of yours begun? When I went to Beirut in 2000, I never played any instruments. During my first semester at University, I saw a local band performing and I liked the crowd and the energy on the stage. I wanted to do what they’re doing. I picked up the bass without any musical background and practiced for a few years. I joined the Music Club at the University and then started my own band. In 2008, I started my own Blues band here which is still the only Blues band ever in Kuwait. Starting in 2012, I became a solo artist.

Why the Blues? When you learn music, the first thing after theory and scales, is Blues. It’s the basis of all music. I started learning it and decided to learn more about this genre. It felt natural to me. I learned about the main players, how it influenced and changed music. When you hear Elvis Presley, you can hear a little of Chuck Berry. You can trace back every musician’s style back to Blues. I stuck there and never moved.

How does music affect you on a personal level?Music is a part of me and I can’t let it go. If I’m not working, I’m always listening to music. It’s an integral part of who I am today.

Who do you look up to?My number one inspiration is Muddy Waters. He is the undisputed king of the Blues, he ‘electrified’ the Blues by adding the electric guitar to this genre simply because he wasn’t able to hear himself play on stage since there were so many people. It exploded from there and grew to what it is today.

As David Mutti Clark said, “And here’s to the blues… The real blues – Where there is a hint of hope in every cry of desperation”. Even if you haven’t listened to Blues music in the past, you actually have… Ali Sleeq continues to revive Blues music in Kuwait and STUDENTALK was able to sit with him to discuss his history with this music.

How do you feel you have been received by the local scene?Kuwait is a small place and you can easily make your mark. I’m the only one playing this type of music and have been playing here for 10 years now so people know who I am and the reception has been wonderful. I’m glad everyone enjoys what I bring to the table.

What is your message?Since I sell myself as a Blues man, my message is to promote the message of the Blues. In this part of the world, it’s not as big as other parts so I want to help bring it to this region.

Any last words? If you’re interested in music, pick it up and don’t hesitate. It’s a long process but it’s worth it. From a Blues perspective, Blues is a feeling and a lifestyle so you have to live a little to feel it and go through certain hardships to make it a little more genuine.

Haider Al-Mosawi attended the Annual Curators Meeting of Global Shapers as he has returned with some extremely valuable lessons that we should all learn and live by as we prepare for University and our future careers. He was able to share his experiences with us and tell us about how things have gone during his visit.

I returned from Geneva last week, after attending the Annual Curators Meeting (ACM) of Global Shapers, an initiative by the World Economic Forum to promote local change for global impact.

It was wonderful to meet so many driven and accomplished individuals, who had many insights and experiences to share. The conversations varied greatly, from business to religious extremism to international politics.

There were many valuable takeaways from the event, and I'll share with you my favorites:

The meaning of consensus: We often assume consensus means complete approval of a decision, and many startup teams tend to argue endlessly over minor details. A useful definition I learned in the ACM is that consensus means: "You can live with it, and I can support it." It doesn't mean a decision reflects your vision 100%, but you can go along with it to move forward. A very liberating outlook.

Be a realist, then an optimist: Mark Pollock lost his vision, and after falling from a two story window, he was paralyzed. This hasn't stopped him from competing and contributing (he's the first blind person to make it to the South Pole). He learned that many individuals don't accept the circumstances they are in. Instead, they remain unrealistically hopeful that their circumstances will miraculously change. If your life (or startup) circumstances aren't what you want them to be, you have to begin by accepting the reality you're facing, then make the changes from where you currently are, not where you wish you could be. The friction between our expectations and reality can lead to unnecessary mental strain and emotional tension. Accept reality, then work to make the most of it.

Aiming for sustainability: Many family businesses and large corporations collapse because they didn't plan for the next

generation of leadership. Mary Galeti, the Executive Director of the Tecovas Foundation, asked us this thought-provoking question: What we've accomplished was the result of standing on the shoulders of the giants that came before us, but who are we preparing our shoulders for?

Turning a constraint into a conduit: One of the exercises we did was to replicate a painting, given certain constraints. Our group's challenge required us to only use the materials we were given. Mary realized the definition of "given" can be loosely interpreted to suggest that it's not only the materials given by the organizers, but we can ask other groups to

give us materials they had. We often limit ourselves by constraints, when we can use them as a springboard for creativity. As the saying goes: Turn your stumbling blocks into stepping stones.

You're limited by your own self-image: Svante Myrick, Mayor of Ithaca, USA, shared with us his own realization that he can reach high places as an African American after reading a book by Barrack Obama. It made me realize that Svante was always capable of running for mayor, but his beliefs about what's possible for him was what held him back before. This is a pattern I see in many individuals, who assume they can't achieve great things because of their

race, gender, family, being an expat, or lacking some skill that isn't truly essential to their success (or they can develop along the way).

‘Haider Al-Mosawi is the cofounder of Sirdab Lab, a startup hub that offers support to entrepreneurs with a coworking space, workshops, events, and mentorship.

He is also the curator of the Global Shapers Kuwait City Hub, part of an initiative by the World Economic Forum to make the world a better place through local change.’

Warmth, Affection, Amiability, Comfort, Indulgence… These are some of the things that you may experience sitting at home; the place where you feel most comfortable. Well, what if we told you that you can have all of that and much more outdoors? Before Chocolate Café made that very possible.

Now, imagine this for a minute: In front of you lays a perfectly made Swiss chocolate and, as you look around, you can see the crowd and hear the noise. The stress of your day has been piling up on your shoulders as you decide to have this chocolate goodness just to relax you a little. You finally take that bite and, as the flavors burst in your mouth and the chocolate immediately brings a smile to your face and the crowd seems to have gone silent, you stop and realize that there is one question in mind: “What was I thinking about Before Chocolate?”

Located in the heart of The Cube Mall in Salmiya, Before Chocolate Café is quite hard to miss! Whether it is because of its location or its extremely inviting atmosphere, one can’t help but stop by and see what is in store for them. The question here is: What exactly is ‘in store’ for the customers?

Raghda Al Essa, the owner of this boutique, has been able to turn this place into a café that has many possessions such as her own vintage collectibles that will keep the customer interested and curious throughout his/her visit. Furthermore, the high quality of Swiss chocolates and the wide variety of choices available will always keep you coming for more ensuring that you have had the opportunity to try everything at least once.

The menu is designed so carefully and with so much thought that you simply cannot go wrong. You are able to go there for your ‘caffeine fix’ with their espressos and why not mix it with their signature milk or dark chocolate? Also, if you are hungry, their chocolate cheese roll or the freshly baked croissants are some of the different choices that you can have. Want a snack? That is not a problem at this boutique with their chips dipped in chocolate! Don’t let all of that chocolate talk distract you from their magnificent selection of sandwiches that are prepared freshly just for you.

If I stopped here, then it would be no problem for many of you but, of course, there is more to go! You can customize the cookies

Lifestyle Health

Since the academic year is soon to start, for some it is hard to keep up with the assignments AND a healthy lifestyle. You may miss your daily meals due to the work you’re given, you may find it hard to get back to your sleeping routine, and you may not find any time to exercise. Here are some tips and smartphone applications that will help the aphorism “A sound mind in a healthy body” be a part of your daily life:

Stay hydrated.Yes, we’ve heard enough of the saying that drinking a lot of water has to be a part of your daily routine but the question is – how do we actually do that?

The average amount of water that men have to drink during the day is about 3 liter (13 glasses), as for women it is about 2.2 liters (9 glasses).

A trick that you can use to force yourself to drink more water is getting a bottle of water (it could be a colorful or unusual designed bottle, not the plain one that we usually see in the supermarkets), writing a scale of time on it using a marker or tape (how much you need to drink at a certain time) and trying to stick with the schedule. Take the bottle with you wherever you go.

Make it a habit to drink water after waking up, before heading to university or before eating your meal. Remember, you are able to make things a habit after approximately 21 days.

Get enough sleep. The perfect time for sleep is from 23:00 until 7:00. The average adult should sleep 7-8 hours a day. To improve your sleeping cycle, try to plan your day so that, at the end of the day, you would feel exhausted. Don’t eat heavy meals at night, ventilate the room, go for a walk or try jogging.

Also put all the electronic devices away! Instead of watching a TV show or surfing the internet, read a book. Put your alarm clock away so the next morning you would have to get up to turn it off.

Do sports. There’s a theory that sport is like a personality - every person has their own. So, find the type of sport that suits you. The best and most fun way to stick to your sports schedule is to find a companion with whom you could compete.

Make it a habit to run in the morning. To add some color into your run: buy a nice sportswear that would make you want to wear it and get to the exercise. So put on some headphones and call your friends!

GadgetsSince 1986, the SSCP has been presenting solar-powered vehicles. The project remains successful until this day and has a pride to be known as a completely student-run project throughout its history. Overall, the project is a donation-funded organization where students build and race cars that powered by the solar energy.

The fastest, most successful, best characterized and most thoroughly tested in the SSCP’s 24-year history, the winner of the 4th place in the World Solar Challenge in 2013 was the Luminos car. It uses mono-crystalline silicon solar cells from SunPower that has one of the highest production conversion efficiencies available in the world today.

Basically, the builders and designers of the solar cars cover the upper body of the vehicle with the battery cells that charge with the sunlight, as the ones you can see on the upper corner, on the right side of a calculator device, but more powerful. Students from any field of study can participate in the SSCP because it is a great opportunity for them to gain valuable experience and information about engineering and designing cars. It is also a good way to raise awareness of the power of solar energy and build environmentally friendly vehicles.

The effects that may influence the performance of the solar car on the race may vary. It depends on the components that are used in creating those cells that absorb the energy from the sunlight, on the amount of the cells that a vehicle has, and on the design of the car itself. Some are made as a regular car that you see on the streets everyday but with the cells on the roof while others are designed as a spaceship with the cells covering the whole upper side of the car.

The SSCP recently unveiled the group’s newest creation “Arctan” that will be presented on the world’s solar car race in the near future. The primary component is SunPower Maxeon cells. These back contact cells increase functional area and avoid shading due to the metal paste from front contact soldering. The new array is significantly easier to clean and is fingerprint resistant.

As we can tell from the recent blog posts by the Arctan group, they are excited for this challenge. Their motto is “test it again!”, so they have a lot of test drives on their schedule before the competition, which starts on the 18th of October.

Jack Wills’ Autumn 2015 re-defines familiar modern classics in a thoroughly unexpected way. Taking a more erudite inspiration as a starting point, the collection rediscovers the great scholastic classics – the flannel shirt, the chino and heritage blazer, the classic bow blouse – mixing them with unexpected sports-inspired pieces.

Women: Richard Nicoll and the design team focused on finer details and finishing, from the hand-embroided flourishes on the classic wool cape to the traditional detailing on Aran knits. Classic cables are re-worked in eye-popping neons. A striped school scarf, woven by Johnstons of Elgin, has been re-worked in our own house colours of pink and blue.

Men: Richard Nicoll and the design team focused on finer details and finishing, in particular the hand embroidery techniques on the sportswear heroes. The striped school scarf, woven by Johsntons of Elgin, Is re-worked in the new season’s burnt orange and autumn reds.

La LigaThe La Liga has officially begun and, after a few weeks into it, it’s still quite difficult to really tell who will be the champions on May 15, 2016. With that said, we are all expecting a tough fight between the top two teams as Real Madrid and Barcelona will be doing everything in their power to lift the cup. Real Madrid started off this season with a new manager in Rafael Benitez as he aims to bring them back to the top again whether it is in this local competition or in the UEFA Champions League. As for Barcelona, they will want to continue on their recent success after winning the three major cups last year and show the world that they are still capable of being the best team in Europe (if not the world).

My Predicted Final Top 4:• FC Barcelona• Real Madrid• Atletico Madrid• Valencia

Serie AJuventus are the clear favorites right now and that isn’t expected to change anytime soon. Last year, they were able to be the shock of the UEFA Champions League as they made it all the way to the Final but weren’t strong enough as they lost 3-1 to Barcelona. Now, they will want to continue on that success and build as they hope to make it one step further and be the team carrying the cup at the end.

The Serie A won’t have much competition even though it includes some great teams such as AC Milan and Inter Milan but I personally do not see them posing a major threat to Juventus. As we see every single year in football, anything is possible and Juventus cannot go through the season taking anything for granted.

My Predicted Final Top 4:• Juventus• AS Roma• Fiorentina• Napoli

English Premier LeagueThe English Premier League is known to be the most interesting one and it will be very risky to choose a favorite team to win. Chelsea come into the season as the holders but that doesn’t mean that they will be doing it once again. With teams such as Manchester United and Manchester City willing to do everything in their power to be the team on top, it’s going to be a very difficult race.

With that said, you cannot forget about the other teams who will be more than prepared to cause a dent to any title hopes for the top three teams. Arsenal and Liverpool could actually do some damage this year and it will be intriguing to see which team will be on top!

UEFA Europa LeagueThe Europa League as we await who will be able to make it through the group stages. With the winners of the past two seasons being Sevilla, it could actually be a little bit different this time since the Spanish team is now part of the UEFA Champions League and they will surely be coming out with all their tricks in order to make it to the next round of that competition.

The favorites for this season, in my opinion, will have to actually be AC Milan. They haven’t been one of the top teams in recent years but have made some great changes to their squad and will want to be back in the scene as soon as they possibly can.

UEFA Champions LeagueThe biggest competition of all is set to begin and everyone is anxiously waiting to see who their favorite teams will be going against with great batles in the group stages. No team has been able to win this competition twice in a row, which proves to be an early challenge for Barcelona. Is it possible? For Barcelona, anything seems to be possible recently and they will want to make history yet again. I personally do not see Barcelona as the favorites and will have to side with their arch rivals, Real Madrid, for this one. The additions to the team and the fact that Rafael Benitez is a manager who has won this competition with Liverpool makes Real Madrid a force to be reckoned with this year.

The 2015/ 2016 Season Begins!

Pedro(Barcelona to Chelsea): There was no denying the fact that Pedro was going to leave the Spanish club during the summer and it was widely expected that the Spaniard would be joining Manchester United. That changed suddenly though as the rumors changed and Pedro was unveiled as a Chelsea player and has already proven to be a great signing for the club.

Let’s take a look at some of the signings that have happened during the transfer window that has either caught people by surprise or could prove to be some of the best deals of the summer:

Memphis Depay (PSV to Manchester United):Even though they have missed out on the signing of Pedro, they were still able to get a magnificent player in Memphis Depay. The Dutch winger has impressed the team and, more importantly, the fans so far as he has taken the sacred #7 jersey. There is no denying that he is about to have a great year ahead!

Arda Turan (Atletico Madrid to Barcelona):Atletico Madrid had a wonderful player in Arda Turan but he has chosen to move to the ‘Catalan’ side as he signed for Barcelona. The problem is that he won’t be able to make his debut until January due to the transfer ban but he is definitely a great capture for them.

Arturo Vidal (Juventus to Bayern Munich):Bayern Munich aren’t really short on quality players in midfield but that did not stop them from a great signing as they were able to get Arturo Vidal from Juventus. Vidal was always an integral player of the Italian team and they will need to try getting by without them as he adds his skills to Germany.

We have been able to take quite an in-depth look into some of the bigger European teams such as Bacelona, Juventus, and Chelsea, but what about the other teams? Let’s see what to expect from the Serie A, La Liga, and the English Premier League:

Serie ARelegated Teams: Cagliari, Cesena, Parma

Promoted Teams: Carpi, Frosinone Calcio, Vicenzia

Promotion is a big deal for the ‘smaller’ clubs in the leagues and they will want to do everything in their power to avoid the last three positions and get relegated again. Whether it’s for financial reasons or for the players to show what they’re truly capable of, there are a lot of factors contributing to why a team would like to stay in the top division. Carpi are the team to watch here as they are capable of causing shocks in the league while Parma will be fighting in the second division in order to come back up after being deducted 9 points last season.

La LigaRelegated Teams: Elche, Almeria, Cordoba

Promoted Teams: Real Betis, Sporting Gijon, Las Palmas

The reasons for fighting to survive in the top flight doesn’t change much here but, in Spain particularly, it is all about the “Big Two”, which consists of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Unfortunately, not much emphasis is put into the teams lower down but there is a lot to look forward to.

The most exciting news is the return of Sporting Gijon to the top flight as they bring the amazing atmosphere with them. They know all about being part of the first division and they’ll be a very exciting team to watch this year.

English Premier LeagueRelegated Teams: Hull City, Burnley FC, Queens Park Rangers

Promoted Teams: Bournemouth, Watford, Norwich

Arguably the most competitive European league in the world sees some major changes this year. Queens Park Rangers, who were expected to get things right the second time around, see themselves back in the second division as Bournemouth exceeded all expectations to get themselves into the top flight. All three promoted teams will face extreme difficulty trying to survive but, if we had to choose one, I would go with Norwich. They have a strong team but will need to make sure that they keep their morale up and focus on their game throughout the year.

One Direction To Break-Up?One Direction have decided to split up for at least a year as the boy band will now be focusing on their own solo albums. Zayn Malik’s earlier shock departure had no effect on this new decision according to the band as they will now be looking at their own careers before maybe getting back together. The final One Direction show will be at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on October 31. They want to also make it known that there is no ‘bad blood’ between them as they simply want to take a break in order to just focus on themselves.

Stephen Amell Arrives to WWE SummerSlam… As The ArrowStephen Amell, the actor of the hit TV Show, ‘Arrow’, has arrived to the WWE SummerSlam pretty much dressed as the character! The hood was there, the cap was there, the pants were there, even his famous facial reaction was evident! The only things missing were his arrows and the fact that he wasn’t fully wearing the costume. It’s easy to spot the similarities between the outfits and I think that we can all agree that he is visiting a very convenient event given that he is the Arrow and is attending the WWE Event!

Victoria Beckham Congratulates Her SonBeing a model and a footballer (other than the fact that his parents are celebrities) aren’t enough for Brooklyn Beckham as he has passed his GCSE’s and his parents could not be more proud. The young English son of David Beckham has shown that he takes his studies extremely seriously even though there are many other things happening around him as well. He may grow up to be a footballer, or a model, or maybe something in Business! You just never know… It will definitely be interesting to see what career path he ends up taking as he grows up.

“X” represents change and transformation, but at the same time it also represents balance and the crossroads between opposite entities - the “transversality” that the new Fiat model, which finds its ideal positioning at the intersection of various automotive segments that include both young and mature drivers - lovers of beauty whohave an eye for vehicles with character, but all with the same desire to enjoy a fulfilling driving experience and express their own personality with a distinctive style. Today, there is a clear, complete option for all of them - the Fiat 500X. It takes talent to get yourself noticed in style on the city streets - the unique design of the Fiat 500X Pop and Lounge models do just that, thanks to styling of bumpers that enhances the body colourand to chrome style details that highlight the made in Italy quality.

Forward Collision Warning-Plusadvises the driver, via a combination of radar and video sensors, if it detects too great a difference in speed between the 500X and the vehicle in front, meaning that there could be a risk of collision. Should the driver not intervene, the system automatically activates the braking to avoid an impact or to mitigate its effects.

The 500X’s LaneSense Lane Departure system uses a camera-based vision sensor to establish the vehicle’s position on the road. If an unintentional lane drift occurs, determined by trajectory change and the absence of turn-signal activation, the system will deliver a visual warning and a haptic warning - the subtle introduction of torque from the electric power steering (EPS) system. If the driver unintentionally drifts too far, the system provides a secondary visual warning.

And the Blind Spot Monitoring system uses dual ultra-wideband radar sensors to aid the driver when changing lanes or if being passed by or

passing unseen vehicles. The system notifies the driver of vehicle(s) in their blind spot via illuminated icons on the side-view mirror and with a driver-selected audible chime.

The all-new fuel-efficient 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo powered Fiat 500X features a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and delivers an output of 140hp. The all-new Fiat 500X was designed at the Centro Stile in Turin, Italy, where designers leveraged the character and iconic features of the Fiat 500 into a larger and more mature package. On the exterior, design elements like double headlamps, a trapezoidal nose, the signature “whiskers and logo” face and the rounded clamshell hood pay homage to the original Cinquecento.

The purposeful and distinct Italian design carries through to the interior with clever storage, body-colour instrument panel, a circular cluster display and iconic door handles. Thefront-wheel drive Fiat 500X is available in Pop and Lounge trim levels that feature distinctive, elegant styling and are sure to win over young, dynamic, metropolitan customers.

Toyota and Mohamed Naser Al Sayer (MNSS) unveiled the new Hilux to mark the introduction of the eighth-generation of this legendary pickup in the Middle East where it has enjoyed a stellar reputation over the years for its quality, durability and reliability. The new model is a complete redesign of one of the world’s best-known and best-loved nameplates with numerous changes in response to customer demands and feedback to exceed all their expectations.

The name Hilux, a combination of the words “high” and “luxury”, was given to underline the truck’s splendour and superiority over the competition, and the new slogan best illustrates its reputation as a sturdy, all-conquering vehicle constantly evolving to set new benchmarks for comfort and performance.

To truly understand the expectations of customers and the challenges they face on a daily basis, Toyota’s development teams travelled the globe, getting direct feedback from customers and driving on a wide variety of different roads to get a feel for different usage conditions. The development process also benefitted from invaluable feedback received directly from Hilux drivers. Some wished they could make long transcontinental trips without worrying about running out of fuel. Others described how hard it is to stay alert and drive safely during gruelling long-distance journeys with extended stretches of rough driving.

Above and beyond conventional ideas of toughness, the eighth-generation Hilux provides ride comfort that make long, tough drives less gruelling, a quiet cabin that allows communication in any conditions, and enhanced cruising range thanks to improved fuel efficiency.

‘Tough and Emotional’ DesignAs the pickup becomes more mainstream, and users look at pickups not only as a workhorse but also a family vehicle, Toyota realizes that the Hilux needs to do double duty and be tough enough to handle all the expectations of new-generation owners. The 2016 Hilux is therefore not only a tough vehicle, but an advanced pickup with stylish cues hitherto found only on SUVs.

The front of the new Hilux gives a sense that the vehicle is wider than it is. This is achieved by the horizontal bars that make up the grille and sleek headlamps that wrap around the front of the fenders. The headlamps are new and stylish for a distinctive design worthy to be called advanced.

The top grille bar extends into the headlamp for Toyota’s signature “Keen Look” and the trapezoid shape of the lower grille highlights the “Under Priority” design language. The hood actually extends over the front fender giving onlookers a sense of one piece of metal on the road. The thick, chunky steel bumper – developed exclusively for the Middle East market based on feedback from customers – is sculpted like a SUV vehicle yet still gives the impression of a “Truck”.

The design language is characterized by continuous flowing lines that connect all parts of the vehicle from corner to corner, with the chrome beltline running along the windows and linking up to the top of the deck to give an impression that the truck is longer than it really is, and that the whole vehicle was designed from front to back. That same beltline divides the lower half of the body, giving the vehicle a tough, grounded, sturdy look on the road.

The new Hilux offers a full line-up of wheel choices from sizes 15 to 17 inches, each featuring a unique design that is both fresh and sporty in either wheel cap or alloy.

Moving to the rear, we see the continuation of the design language. The steel bumper step is actually set closer to the ground and is also deeper, while the tailgate features a character line and a nice chrome surround around the tailgate release.

The deck itself has been re-imagined. The deck structure panels have been strengthened and reinforcements added underneath, and the deck floor ribs have been redesigned to better resist deformation during loading/unloading of heavy payloads. Part of this new advanced toughness is the amount of abuse from the elements and duty the all-new Hilux can take. Staggered tie-downs and thickened load secure points make the Hilux the best tool for various transport needs.

The new Hilux is offered in 5 exciting colors – Super White 2, Silver ME, Gray ME, Attitude

Black MC and White Pearl CS which is being introduced for the first time in the Hilux due to high demand from Middle East customers.

Powerful Engine & Smooth HandlingThe tried-and-trusted TR petrol engine has been developed even further, simultaneously achieving increased fuel economy and high output. The 2.7-litre engine - producing 164hp and up to 245Nm - is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission, and delivers 10% higher fuel efficiency compared with the current TR engine.

The new Hilux also features a convenient Drive Mode Switch that allows the driver to select a preferred drive mode – ECO for optimum economy and POWER for enhanced acceleration. The ECO Mode reduces power consumption in relation to acceleration, heating and cooling, whilst also taking into consideration the environment, whereas the POWER Mode provides sharper acceleration response, ensuring a more agile drive on slopes and winding roads.

Comprehensive Safety FeaturesThe all-new Hilux comes equipped with a vast array of safety features that highlight Toyota’s

focus on occupant and pedestrian protection. From ABS and SRS airbags for the driver and front passenger to a knee airbag for only the driver, the Hilux offers a number of active and passive safety measures. In addition to ABS (Anti-lock Brake System), which prevents the tires from locking during braking, the vehicle comes equipped with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) to properly perform brake force distribution between the front and rear wheels according to the vehicle condition.

It also features Brake Assist, which generates a large brake force during emergency braking to support drivers who may not be able to depress the brake pedal with enough force.

Other safety features include a three-point type Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seat belt equipped on all seats except the center seat (which features a two-point type seat belt), and the use of high-tensile strength steel sheets and supplementary materials throughout the body structure to help reduce passenger injuries, as well as extensive use of impact-absorbing structures for parts such as the engine hood, front fender and cowl in order to reduce impact force to the head and legs of pedestrians during a collision.

Every year, Starbucks challenges its baristas around the world to make the best latte art, espresso drinks, and be even more knowledgeable about coffee. The Lucky Dip challenges the baristas’ knowledge of Starbucks core coffee range. Bar Skills tests the baristas’ mastery behind the bar on espresso-based beverages such as lattes, cappuccinos, caramel machiattos and flat whites. The Signature Beverage Round gives contestants the opportunity to showcase their creativity by innovating a new beverage. The final round puts participants against each other in a Quiz, testing their knowledge on everything Starbucks related.

This year, after the scores were tallied and the judges had finished deliberating, the results were announced: Mary Joy Tandiama from the UAE was crowned MENA Barista Champion – Southern Markets and Khay Santos from Kuwait was named MENA Barista Champion – Northern Markets.

Starbucks MENA

Khay Santos from Kuwait

Khay, how long have you been working with Starbucks? I joined Starbucks two years ago at the Marina Mall branch, and have been there ever since.

What do you think of the competition and how you feel about winning the barista championship and representing the MENA region in?It’s an amazing feeling and the competition is a great one!Through the competition, we get to understand the coffee culture of Starbucks.

What does it take to be a Barista Champion? It takes a lot of courage and passion to be a barista champion; it’s actually a very motivational exercise. It was an overwhelming feeling for an ordinary barista like me and I couldn’t believe that I’d actually won this competition.

How do the Starbucks baristas feel about the Championship? We had so much fun being a part of this exercise. We enjoyed The Personal Coffee Tasting session, using different brewing methods and pairing those coffees with foods. We also liked the Lucky Dip challenge and evaluating our ‘behind the bar’ skills. We managed to showcase our creativity and imagination during The Signature Beverage Round. The Quiz was also a great opportunity to refresh our memories and helped all of us revising our knowledge of all Starbucks-related info.

Mary, how does it feel to carry the MENA Barista Champion title? It’s feels great to be rewarded for your commitment and passion. I feel proud being part of the Starbucks family. We all know that a good cup of coffee can change our customers’ days and we enjoy delivering the best beverages which we know that customers are going to enjoy.

Asha’s, one of the Middle East’s favourite fine dining destinations, has launched a special menu called “Sizzling Sensations” that aims to delight guests by providing a culinary experience that appeals to all five senses.

The smoke, the sizzling, the aromas, the taste and the textures make the Sizzling Sensations a real treat for the taste buds. Asha’s has created six new sizzlers, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, that it will be offering in all its restaurants across the region.

Built around the legendary Indian artiste, Asha Bhosle, and her passion for cooking, Asha’s has expanded from one restaurant in Dubai to a series of successful award-winning restaurants across the Middle East and United Kingdom. Today, Asha’s is synonymous with excellent food and exemplary service, and has seen steady growth in all markets as a result.

Asha’s menu reflects the very best of Indian cuisine and promises a truly memorable dining experience. It combines traditional North Western cuisine, Indian home-style cooking and new-age fusion selections that give traditional Indian dishes an innovative twist.

The concept of Asha’s was created to express Asha Bhosle’s love for cooking and offers an exclusive dining experience with some of her signature dishes. While many know her to be a prolific singer - the ‘most recorded artist in music history’ in the Guinness Book of World Records, she is an equally talented cook, with a passion for experimentation.

Her recipes have been known to enthral many Bollywood personalities, who say they experience the same magic in in her cooking as they do in her singing.
