Dear Students, Next time you face a challenging life trial, don’t say “WHY ME” Say “TRY ME”!This is a post I received from one of my closest friends as she said it reminded her of me. A few days later, I received a message from Alnowair, promoting resilience and reminding us that the moments that will leave the most impact on us are those where we were able to conquer the most trying challenges. Two messages promoting the same. And I wondered.. Are these messages for me to take heed?Or a nice reminder of why I do what I do, the way I do it?Or an energy boost as summer’s heat rises?! Whatever may, how blessed I feel to have such caring friends and Alnowair family to keep spreading their positivity into my life! And how blessed I am, that even when I am unaware, the invisible energies around me still conspire to make my life better. May you, my students, always be surrounded by the most positive of messages and energies, and may you always be able to feel the invisible hands that carry us through…. And as Alnowair put it, remember Luli the fruity popsicle? You have to squeeze it hard before you can enjoy it! :) So always remember; the greater the obstacle, the sweeter the reward. The Protégés, a mentorship program designed to positively influence the youth and push them towards realizing their own potential and becoming their improved selves. An all-inclusive program that combines workshops, lectures, activities, challenges, games, and fun; all guided by a group of the most talented experts and influentials across multiple fields, the mentors. Intended to help the youth discover, develop and build themselves away from the typical norms of society. Teaching students innovative (hands on) techniques, which they can use to master certain skills that further enhance their future careers.

"The protégés brings you happiness, joy, love, opportunities, and a memorable experience.

Dana Al Hamdan, 22, a marketing student at Kuwait University joined the protégés in generation 5. Through the vast world of social media, she was able to discover the program and apply, after two interviews; Dana is now a proud member. Not knowing what to expect, what she would be learning, or the experiences that would come of it, there were a lot of things she wanted to prove and knew that the mentors would provide her with the necessary tools and tips to challenge herself, change simple things in her personality and other areas of her life.

“They taught me how to prioritize, how to overcome my fears, struggles, manage my time by balancing work and study, how to follow through, reaching my set goals, and discover what it is I am after.”

Dana was not only able to make a change in herself and her life, but she has also had the opportunity to make changes in her community and varying communities around the world. Help the less fortunate and dedicate her time, taking the next step using hands on techniques. Working on projects that included, donating to educate, traveling to different countries, and obtaining primary experience in being amongst those who need help, one of the projects she was a part of was a trip to Jordan and was able to join Offline in Goa. This was her first experience in stepping out of her comfort zone, traveling not only to help others, create smiles and give back, but also to build new friendships. “You can see the happiness in the children’s eyes as we handed them their new book, you are happy because you know this will positively impact their lives.”

Another trip, she was also able to join was Offline, in Egypt. A six day trip, and with it being far from what she was used to, an extremely limited use of technology, staying in a shack on the beach, with the bathroom in the room and no lock, it was one of her favorite trips, as it will forever be a trip that sticks with her.

After the first three “Top-Off” projects, a food market, done by Dana’s mentors, where she

volunteered and observed, she took the reins on the fourth, and adopted the project as her own. Leading approximately 50 volunteers, and communicating and involving vendors which included: start-ups, restaurants, activities for children and adults, and live entertainment. Taking it to the next level, the Top-off project this time gave all its proceeds to a fundraiser created to build a library in Egypt. Despite the challenges, with the help of her mentors, the Top-Off project was accomplished with flying colors. Other than the amount of fun, “at the end of the day you get to see that everyone enjoyed it and they were also a part of the help to build a library for those in need.” The next Top-Off events will be held in November and the summer of 2017.

“I see that every student has their own dreams and wants to do what they are most passionate about, and to do that you must get out of your comfort zone, because with these experiences you will gain what you need to help you overcome more challenges and figure out what it really is that you want and are passionate about. Further, it will be a step to not only improving yourself, but will help the community and your society.”

Every day is a new challenge, a new experience, and a new page for Dana, she is able to walk out the door with more knowledge than before, implement it in her life, improve herself and push forward to help others.

Lulu Al Roomi, 18, and a high school senior, enjoys a challenge and the opportunity to step out of her comfort zone. Though, she was interested in joining the Protégés in Generation 4, unfortunately, she was unable to pursue it at the time. However after being influenced by the dramatic changes she saw in her friend, Lulu decided it was time she stepped up. Seeing the changes that came of it for her friend, including; her now big personality, confidence, maturity, and the community she was a part of as beautiful, familial, and stood together as if with one heart, she is now a dedicated member of the Protégés, Generation 5.

“I learned a lot, the mentors give you insight that allows you to end up in a different destination, a better destination. They see what you can’t, which is what I love and having mentors in your life is very valuable and important, and honestly, it has been a life changing experience.”

During her time spent with the Proteges, Lulu was able to travel several times and experience firsthand experience with supporting and working towards bettering the world, she traveled to Jordan twice, Egypt twice, and a trip to the vast beaches of Goa, India. Throughout these trips, she was able to donate books to local schools and under privileged children, while receiving a primary understanding of the varying lifestyles through a project of her own, put together after her Protégés graduation; Raqsh, an ongoing mission, consisting of 24 of the students.

Lulu tells us a story about her next personal project “Offline.” Filled with the passion for travel, stepping out of her comfort zone, and creating personal experiences pushing away from the over loaded technology we find ourselves constantly wrapped up in today. A push from her mentor set her on the

path to creating and successfully achieving a trip to the vast beaches of Egypt, where a group of 20 people put their phones away, took shelter in shacks without air conditioning, developed their networking and personal communication skills without a technological barrier through daily discussions and activities. The next trip she plans for Offline will be a road trip across the United States, and following it is a trip to Mykanos, Greece.

Now, Lulu finds herself to have a very powerful support system and a large amount of resources, with Protégés as a tool for her to achieve her goals.

Today, these young ladies stand up and commend their mentors, other members, the program and themselves for taking on something new and taking on new adventures and learning experiences every day.

Pay It Forward is the expression of doing a good, selfless deed for someone that you may or may not know - no matter how big or small - without expecting anything in return. The popular Pay It Forward philosophy taps into our selfish mindset, and takes us out of our busy schedules in the world we live in today. With the holy month of Ramadan approaching, where Muslims worldwide fast during the day, it is also the month where Muslims contribute to helping others, and encourages us to take a moment to give back to those in need. It is the time of year where many people in Kuwait can benefit from random acts of kindness.

Topic of the Month This Month’s Spotlight

There are many wonderful ways to give back, from giving food to those in need, holding the door for someone, donating money to charity, or giving a hat to the workers working outside in the hot summer. The United Kingdom just recently celebrated their sixth year of Pay It Forward Day on April 28, 2016. Pay It Forward Ltd is an independent company that runs under a not-for-profit organization. Their vision is to assist people to have the chance to give to the less fortunate. Pay It Forward Day invites people to join a worldwide movement to perform acts of kindness to three or more people. Last year, 75 people from around the world contributed to Pay It Forward Day.

One of their successful projects was about Nourish, a healthy fast food restaurant in Leeds, and Sheffield that has a ‘Pay It Forward’ tree concept. Customers can pay for a meal or hot drink for someone who can’t afford it alongside their order, and this extra order is placed onto the Pay It Forward Tree for somebody less privileged to collect. This shows the simplest thing in life can leave a powerful impact.

Take a moment and think about the times you received help throughout your life, and the good that has been done for you. As Kuwait prepares for a month of fasting, reflection,

and change, there is no better way than to step out of the looking glass, and make a difference in the lives of the people around us.

Mother Teresa once said, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.” Let someone know that they matter, for their importance and value. The saying goes by Dr. Seuss, “you may just be one person in this world, but to one person, at one time, you are the world.” One good deed may not seem enough, but if each individual looked for the opportunity to help others, then the cycle of generosity can shape us to become better people. Everyone can do something.

First Annual Competition for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Small and Medium Enterprises

The Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Australian College of Kuwait (ACK) recently hosted its “First Annual Competition for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Small and Medium Enterprises”. The event took place at ACK and was sponsored by the Arab Planning Institute (API) and Kuwait Banking Association (KBA). In attendance were Mr. Abdullah Al-Sharhan, Chairman of ACK, Dr. Bader Mallalah, Chairman of API, Mr. Sulaiman Al-Ayoubi on behalf of Mr. Majid Al-Ajeel, Chairman of KBA, and Dr. RedhaBehbehani, Founder and Director General of Global Center.

Participating projects covered a wide range of industries, such as; food and beverage, IT, Social

Media and Communications, Tourism, Industrial and more.

The judging panel of the competition consisted of Dr. Sam Toglaw, Manager of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Ehab Moqagalah, Director of SME Center at (API), and Mr. Wael Dabbousi, Director of Engineering and R&D at the Renewable Energy Startup in Montreal, Canada.

The Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at ACK aims to support students in building their entrepreneurial skills, up-skilling idea-owners to transform business ideas into feasible and viable business activities, creating a culture

of innovation and entrepreneurship, fostering excellence in innovation and entrepreneurship, supporting commercialization of academic intellectual property as well as supporting networking and outreach initiatives.

The competition ended with “Green Rubber Corp.”project as 1st Winner, the team consisted of Mohammad Al-Eidani, Ali Mohammed, Mohammed Ali, Addeb Peerkhan, Aftab Sawhney, and Mustafa Al-Jasem. “Open Table” took 2nd place, their team consisted of Fatema AlGhanim, Hajar Arab, Loulwa Boodai, Menna Abdulmajeed, Nada Khalaf, and Tabia AlNasser. 3rd place, “In Radius” their team consisted of: Mohammad Abdulrazzak, and Ali Abdulrasoul.

The Department of Art and Graphic Design at the American University of Kuwait held its 9th edition of the Graphic Design Capstone Exhibition 2016.The opening reception for the exhibition was held in both the Auditorium and Multipurpose Room of the University on Sunday May 15, 2016.The exhibition was open to the public from 16-19 May, 2016.

The AUK Graphic Design Capstone represents an opportunity for senior students majoring in Graphic Design, to fully incorporate their design strengths and learning into a focused, extended process of research and visual expression. Their projects are diverse, reflecting individual student investigations into their topic of choice.

The diversity of projects and resolutions are wide-ranging, from social activism campaigns to corporate identity rebranding and entrepreneurship.

AUK’s Graphic Design Capstone is program-driven; all professors in Art and Graphic Design serve as mentors to Capstone students. Professor Rita Merheb has guided students through the process of Capstone from ideation, to implementation, and finally to exhibition.

The aim of AUK’s Graphic Design major is to prepare students for meaningful careers in a wide range of fields and businesses, such as graphic design studios, publishing houses, corporations, non-profit institutions, film andvideo production companies, advertising and multimedia firms, and emerging areas of employment relative to visual communication.

أفكار مجموعة قدمن طالبة خمسين من أكثر المعرض في شارك في تطبيقات منها المبتكرة األفكار من عدد تضم صغيرة لمشاريع من وغيرها والترفيه والتصوير، اإللكتروني، كالتسوق المجاالت مختلف المشروع، فكرة في فقط ليست الطالبات موهبة فيها برزت مشاريع بل في طريقة تقديم األفكار بأسلوب جديد وعرضها على زوار المعرض. بكفاءات يتمتعن ال طالبات بتخريج نفتخر نحن “ حراف د. علقت وقد “ متميز. وظيفي لمسار تؤهلهن عملية بخبرات وإنما فقط نظرية بطريقة للعمل فرصة للطالبة تتيح المشاريع هذه مثل “ وأضافت سيدات وتطور أفضل، بطريقة األفكاراالبداعية ترسيخ على تساعد أعمال ناجحات في المستقبل.” كما أعربت عن خالص امتنانها إلى إدارة الطالبات لمشاريع المتواصل دعمها على الكويت بوكسهل كلية وأضافت أن مثل هذه المشاريع تركز على تعليم الطالبات أسس صناعة المشاريع الصغيرة ودراسة الجدوى االقتصادية للمشاريع كما تستعرض وجني لتسويقه باحترافية ادارته وكيفية الصغير المشروع بناء خطة األرباح منه. كما تتطرق إلى أهمية استخدام التكنولوجيا الحديثة للترويج التي والمخاطر التحديات استعراض على عالوة وانجاحه للمشروع وأساليب بطرق والتعريف بدايتها في السيما المشاريع هذه تصاحب مما الطالبات لتحفيز المشروع.، وفشل نجاح ووسائل المشاريع نجاح يدعم المسيرة التعليمية في الكلية.ويذكر أن كلية بوكسهل تسعى لدى العملي الجانب إثراء بهدف النشاطات هذه مثل لتنظيم دائمًا الطالبات من خالل االحتكاك والتفاعل مع خبرات لها تجارب عملية ثرية. تفتخر الكلية الكلية،أن رئيس عريفة، علي البروفيسور بين وقد هذا بوجود فريق من الطالبات الموهوبات وبجهود أعضاء الهيئة التدريسية هذه مثل تنظيم إلى دائمًا يسعى الذي الطالبية الشؤون وقسم

دشنت كلية بوكسهل الكويت معرضها الخامس في مجال المشاريع الصغيرة والذي يشمل جميع مشاريع التخرج لطالبات إدارة االعمال تحت إشراف رئيسة قسم الدراسات اإلدارية في الكلية الدكتورة أرزو الحراف بالتنسيق مع قسم العالقات العامة في الكلية. كان المعرض الذي نظم في قاعة المعارض قد شهد حضور رئيس الكلية البروفيسور علي عريفة ورؤساء األقسام األكاديمية وعدد من أعضاء هيئة

التدريس وجمع من الطالبات .

AUK Students Serve their Community

“AUK students should not only engage in academic, intellectual and public research activities but also should step outside their campus and serve their community,” Said Dr. Inas Mahfouz Assistant Professor of English at AUK. Earlier this year, AUK signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Lothan Youth Achievement Center (LOYAC) to enhance students’ engagement with their community and facilitate their professional development and personal growth. This spring, Dr. Mahfouz and a total of 67 AUK students volunteered with (LOYAC) as part of their ENGL 102: Writing and Information Literacy course. The students volunteered in “Service is my Joy”, a LOYAC program that gives the volunteers the chance to help the less fortunate.

ENGL102: Writing and Information Literacy aims at developing students’ critical analysis and response to different issues. To give it a more hands-on dimension, Dr. Mahfouz decided this semester to engage her students with their community through community-based writing. Through LOYAC’s “Service is

my Joy”, the students engaged in different activities at different centers around Kuwait. Some students helped mentally disabled children at Abeer2; others supported autistic people at Paradise; a third group cooperated together to clean beaches and the last group

volunteered at Kuwait Red Crescent Society. “Despite some concerns at the beginning, the students enjoyed the experience of giving back to their community and also the fact that they would write about their real life experience,” said Dr. Mahfouz

ما هي البرامج التدريبية التي يتم تنظيمها؟ 20 المركز على وحصلنا وقطر البحرين في مناظرات في شاركنا من 367 شخص من حول العالم. كما نقوم بدورات تدريبية ليس فقط كما أيضًا. العامة للمعلومات تدريب أيضًا بل المناظرات صعيد على ننظم تدريبات أسبوعية باللغتين العربية واإلنجليزية وتتضمن الحديث الدورات وهذه حفل. وعريف مذيع تصبح وكيف والخطابة الناس أمام

نادي المناظرات في جامعة الخليج يفوز بالمركز األول في البحرين على مستوى الوطن العربي

حمد الخضري: نؤمن بحرية التعبير عن الرأي وإحترام الرأي اآلخر

حقق فريق جامعة الخليج للعلوم والتكنولوجيا المركز األول في بطولة مناظرات الجامعات العربية التي أقيمت مؤخراً في البحرين، وعلى الرغم من أن نادي المناظرات في جامعة الخليج تأسس عام 2013، إال أنه خالل ثالث سنوات استطاع أن يحقق عدد من اإلنجازات المهمة خالل هذه الفترة. ولنتعرف أكثر على النادي وأنشطته التقينا بالطالب حمد الخضري وأجرينا الحوار التالي.

ماذا يمثل لكم الفوز بالمركز األول في بطولة مناظرات العربية؟ الجامعات

ونعتبرها عام، بشكل الجامعات ولطلبة الكويت لدولة هو الفوز هذا 13 من أكثر بها وشاركت عربية بطولة كونها خاصة مهمًا انجازاُ جامعة من مختلف الدول العربية منها األردن، عمان، البحرين، اإلمارات،

السعودية والكويت وغيرها.

حتى المتبعة االستراتيجيات من عدد تتطلب المناظرات أن ونعتبر نتمكن من تحقيق الفوز وأهمها المعلومات العامة، التناغم واالنسجام

بين أعضاء الفريق والتركيز على نقطة ضعف الفريق المنافس.

كيف يتم اإلعداد للمناظرة؟ويمنع لإلعداد فقط دقيقة عشرون الفريق وأمام موضوع إختيار يتم وغيرها. انترنت أو كتب من مساعدة وسائل أي استخدام خاللها من أن ويمكن دقائق 5 مدة شخص كل ويمنح المناظرة تبدأ ثم ومن

تتغير المدة من مناظرة إلى أخرى، وتبدأ الحلقة النقاشية.

لماذا قررت اإللتحاق في نادي المناظرات؟تأسس النادي عام 2013، وكان يضم وقتها 10 أشخاص فقط، وفي تلك الفترة شهدت الكويت عدد من التغييرات على كافة األصعدة والحظنا طرق إلى األحيان من كثير في تؤدي النظر وجهات في اإلختالف أن

Jude Alkhaldi has a passion for reading. She knows that reading is a crucial element of knowledge. Although she is majoring in engineering, she founded the Dead Poet’s Society in Kuwait University, which is a book club that reads two books a month, one in English and the other in Arabic.

When was this club established?

It all started on November 27th of 2015, Jude AlKhaldi posted a very important tweet, which went something like “Who would like to start a book club with me at university?” to which many of the original founders replied to with a huge yes. After that Jude spoke with a couple of professors who encouraged it and the rest as they say is history.

How can the students participate?

All it takes is showing up to the book

discussions, follow us on twitter @KU_DPS for updates on the books chosen for each month’s book discussions, and details about where and when it will be held.

What are the activities that take place?

Well for each month we hold two book discussions, one for a book in English and another for a book in Arabic. We’ve also held a book swap booth where you could swap any of your books for another book. We’ve also hosted a discussion with a well renowned local writer Mr. Abdulwahab AlSayed, where we discussed his books with him.

How do you manage to diverge from your engineering profession with the book club?

Simply because we believe reading is a lifelong habit. It shouldn’t have anything to do with your major, it’s about thinking, learning and questioning many things, we believe that these are important habits that sadly many students in university don’t have. Knowledge is power, the best way to acquire knowledge is to read and as Kuwait’s future we simply can’t make our country a more developed better place to live without being a generation that not only reads, but thinks about what they read.

What genres of books do you focus on the most?

Generally, books that make you think. We’ve focused on books that have an important message, there’s no specific genre because each book is very different, so that the discussions don’t get boring and repetitive. We try to choose books that raise questions, we as youths should ask and discuss.

How did you come up with the name?

You can guess it; the book club is named after the movie. We thought it appropriate because the movie sends the same message we do, the movie encourages you to read in a different angle as a quote from the movie says “When you read, don’t just consider

what the author thinks, consider what you think” and we believe that is one of the most important things in reading, you should read to think and many readers, especially here in Kuwait, forget that. The movie also encourages you to see things differently, accept other opinions and question everything. Just as quote says, “Just when you think you know something, you have to look at in another way. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try.” We as a club would like to encourage this.

To what extent does the faculty associate with you?

The faculty has recently recognized us as a club that is under the deanship itself, so

even though at the beginning we were only allowed to do events in the College of Engineering and Petroleum, now we can do events in any campus. The faculty has been very supportive especially in the Engineering departments and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Bader AlBusairi for allowing the book club in the first place, and a huge thank you to Dr. Sultan AlAnezi for his huge support to the book club, and Dr. Saleh Yaseen for attending our first discussion.

What are your upcoming activities?

We’ve got many plans in the future since this is only the beginning, the soonest activity being the book discussion held on June 2nd, about “1984” by George Orwell.

Photography was always a hobby for me it was my passion. When the time came to pick a major however, I decided to get my degree in interior architecture. I did not get accepted into the interior architecture program, and chose to switch to marketing. After four years and experimenting in different fields, I decided to pursue my degree in photography, learning about the technicalities of the cameras and turning my passion into a profession.

My parents thought I should keep photography on the side and pursue a profitable major. By showing my parents how passionate I am about photography and that it is a part of me, I was able to convince them that photography was what I had to major in. They have been nothing but supportive, they truly believe in my abilities in the world of fine arts.

I started off with digital photography in 2007 and I started adding my own signature vintage tones to all my photos for my viewers to be able to distinguish my artwork amongst other artists. Seven years later I got myself in a dark room at my school, and I would stay there 5 days a week, not to mention my weekends, where I stay sometimes until midnight for 10 consecutive hours introducing myself to the world of analog. My love for black and white film photography kept on growing; then it hit me, that when my time in Unites States was over I have to build my own dark room in Kuwait. If not for my supportive parents, my analog photographic journey wouldn’t be able to flourish in my hometown, and that would greatly disappoint me.

While I continue my studies in fine art photography, I also began collecting 35 MM and 120 MM cameras, as well as, dark room equipment such as, enlargers, negative carriers and chemicals like, the fixer developer and hypo wash to help those who would like to go back in time and capture moments using cameras that our ancestors have used. Adventuring from antique store to antique store finding and buying cameras ranging from 10 to 300 dollars and fix them.Despite the challenges I may face as a

professional fine arts photographer in Kuwait, after graduation I plan to head home for a year and give workshops on how to use analog cameras in a dark room. Of course, dark rooms are not available for our use in Kuwait; however, with the continued support of my parents, they have agreed to build one in our basement. Therefore, having my own dark room in Kuwait motivates me to move back and spread the knowledge I have gained to all those interested and haven’t had the opportunity to pursue it.

Fine art photography is far from commercial and my style is capturing candid moments with the use of natural lighting, my preferred subjects would be the elderly, newborns with their mothers and people my age doing their everyday activities.

One thing I focus on is self-portraits and by that I do not mean “selfies” or posing of some sort. It’s the discovery of one’s true self, and for me, after moving to the southwestern desert of Arizona, it took me two years to get to know my true self through the use of self-portraits.

Currently, fine art photographers are exhibiting my work in museums and exhibitions, not a lot of money comes out of this, but that’s the least of my worries, it’s more about self discovery, passion, vision,

and loving what you do. I attend several photography seminars, conferences and lectures in the U.S. and I have attended a seminar in Europe because there is always a lot more to learn.

I wish that there were more photography workshops and lectures in Kuwait, that shared knowledge and work of some of the most inspirational photographers such as; Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Sebastiao Salgado, Han Nguyen and most importantly to me, Vivian Maier, who has not only been a massive inspiration for me, but she also has a “highly skilled eye and acute photographic sense.”

Maha Al Asakeris, is one of the few Kuwaiti photographers, and one who caught my eye, she followed her dreams, doing what she loves. Also a motivating factor to me as a Kuwaiti photographer, she is one of the reasons that pushed me to do what I really love, I was inspired.

A majority of my photography projects, describe myself, my Arabian culture, and my community, which is also a way for me to introduce my cultural lifestyle to my friends, peers, and colleagues.

طالبة، فنانة تشكيلية وكاتبة وداد المطوع: كل ما تعشقه عيني أرسمه

وداد عبداهلل المطوع، كاتبة وفنانة تشكيلية وطالبة في جامعة الكويت كلية اآلداب قسم فلسفة سنة ثالثة. تمتلك شغفًا كبيراً في مختلف أنواع الفن، بدأت بالرسم وأصدرت أول كتبها وصواًل إلى شخصية مؤثرة على مواقع التواصل اإلجتماعي. التقت بها مجلة STUDENTALK، وأجرت الحوار التالي.

متى وكيف بدأتي في مجال الرسم؟عن طريق الصدفة، والجدير بالذكر خالل المدرسة لم أكن من محبي مادة الرسم، ولكن في سنة 1999 اكتشفت بالصدفة خالل رسمي لفنجان قهوة حيث الحظ والدي هذه الموهبة، وشجعني على صقل

هذه الموهبة من خالل دورات. وقبل ذلك كنت أرسم كل ما تراه عيني من الخضار والفواكة والطبيعة الصامتة.

كيف صقلتي هذه الموهبة؟استمريت في الرسم لمدة سنتين قبل اإللتحاق بدورات تدريبية،

وبدأت مع الفنان التشكيلي محمد علي الشيبياني حيث أنه هو من أسسني وعلمني الطريقة الصحيحة إلستخدام فرشاة الرسم

وطريقة دمج األلوان والرسم. وعلمني أن الرسم يكون عن طريق العين ألن اليد تنقل. ومن هنا كل ما تعشقه عيني أرسمه في لوحة

تعبر عن إحساسي.

ما هو مصدر إلهامك؟أنا من عشاق الموسيقى واآلالت الموسيقية، ومن خاللها أرسم

األحاسيس والمشاعر التي تعبر عن رسالة. وبعد ذلك انتقلت إلى قصص اإلنسان من طفل ومرأة ورجل بمختلف األعمار ومن خالل

لوحاتي أعكس معاناة الناس من حرب واستبداد وظلم وكره وحب، وبذلك أعتمد على رسم كل أمر ونقيضه.

بعدها انتقلت إلى قصائد الشعراء واخترت فكرة »قصائد تشكيلية« بما معناها أختار قصيدة من قصائد الشعراء واترجمها بلوحة.

LoYAC 'Peace of Art' campaignclosing ceremony

Graffiti art is no longer restricted on the walls, but it has been taken a little further ahead to include empty oil barrels carrying an artistic message of peace. This magnificent effort was made possible by a group of fine arts youths’ and children gathered by ‘LOYAC’. A nonprofit organization, LOYAC works towards the overall development of youth in order to spread artistic culture and community awareness of the role of art in the peace industry and the importance of re-recycling and environmental preservation through works of art.

Lothan youth Achievement Center, (LoYAC) held the closing ceremony of its ‘Peace of Art’ campaign under the patronage of National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim. The celebratory event was attended by representatives from the government including HE Sheikh Salman Al-Humoud Al Sabah, Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, members of the diplomatic corps, and other partners and supporters of LoYAC, at its headquarters in Qibliya School in May.

The ‘Peace of Art’ campaign, part of LoYAC’s community outreach project brought together 17 notable local artists along with little Loyacers to paint on barrels of oil. LoYAC’s intentional use of oil barrels aims to highlight the importance of recycling as well as the use of oil revenues to promote arts, humanity, and peace.

During the campaign, old oil barrels were recycled into seats, painted by artists and exhibited in a tour through Kuwait’s public venues to raise the awareness on the peace campaign and encourage participation in the charity auction. The proceeds from this campaign were dedicated towards LoYAC’s community outreach projects in Yemen, and for Syrian refugees in south of Turkey where the organization is establishing a Center for Child and Youth Empowerment.

National Assembly Speaker, Marzouq Al-Ghanim, thanked all those who had contributed towards the success of the campaign and

commended the youth for embracing the culture of teamwork and collaboration as a means to fight the feelings of pessimism and discontent and for not falling prey to a culture of passive complaining. He thanked both the Kuwaiti and non- Kuwaiti youth residing in Kuwait for believing that the darkness of the world cannot be dispelled by a single candle and for coming together through such creative conclaves to further the culture of beauty and spread the values of gratitude.

Further, mentioning that LoYAC, through this campaign, had succeeded in three main areas, among several others. He praised the organization’s spirit of collaboration and inclusion that had brought together different members of society and stakeholders to participate in this initiative, especially lauding them for their inclusion of the Bedoun or Stateless persons. Affirming that LoYAC had been successful in spreading the message of love and peace in a region so wrought with conflict and turmoil and highlighted that

initiatives such as this show Kuwait to be a beautiful and charitable country, and not one of corruption or lethargy. Followed with a thank you note to LoYAC for proving that the value of Kuwait and the Kuwaiti people is not contained in the barrel of oil and its fluctuating worth, but that the value of Kuwaitis lies in their magnanimity towards others, creative spirit, and message of peace.

“The Arab region is aflame with sectarianism, bigotry, and terrorism; the flames are on our doorstep and the shrapnel have reached and impacted us last year. Are we going to stand by and watch? Or is each of us going to carry their bucket, no matter how small, and proceed with putting out the fire as best they can?”, stated Fareah Al Saqqaf, Founder Chairperson and Managing Director of LoYAC. She stressed that the Arab condition was disastrous and implored for concerted action to be taken by all within their circles of influence to preserve humanity and alleviate sorrow.

She iterated LoYAC’s vision of empowering the youth in Arab societies enlightening them for peace and prosperity and informed that all the important and fundamental programs created since 2002, which amount to 17 local and global programs, aim to reinforce their humanity so that they are more balanced and at peace with themselves first and, in turn, with others.

“In 2014, when the brutality of the wars in the region intensified, and the venomous structures spread in a number of the Arab countries that surround us, we launched ‘LOYAC for Peace’ campaign to remind ourselves and others of the important channels of peace, such as volunteering. So we set up a campaign to collect donations to fund the construction of Al-Kuwait Hospital in Al Waht in the south of Yemen and we established LOYAC Yemen (in Aden) that played an important humanitarian role during the war and continues to hold that role. Moreover, when matters became worse, we launched the ‘Peace of Art’ campaign as a reminder that art is yet another bucket of peace just as important as that of volunteering. We invited 16 young artists who were very keen on taking part in the campaign, which led

to a successful project because they believed in the importance of their role and they were aware of their humanitarian and societal responsibilities”, she remarked.

She informed that this environmental, humanitarian, and development project integrates several important objectives which contribute to the development of human beings, raising awareness of the importance of maintaining the environment, activating the role of artists, and reinforcing the individual’s humanity through active contribution to humanitarian charity work. The success of the campaign concludes with the inauguration of a fully-equipped centre for Syrian refugee children and adolescents in the south of Turkey in Antakya by the end of the month of Ramadan this year.

Commenting on the use of oil barrels in the art campaign, she reiterated, “Since God blessed us with petroleum as our source of fortune and luxury, with that we were able to empower our youth and help those around us. Since petroleum is a non- renewable source that one day will run out, with its empty barrels we are able to endure with an everlasting wealth,

which is far greater and more important than petroleum; this wealth being our youth. Therefore, we will continue with this project and we will strive for it to be the basis upon which a new economic sec- tor is built, which brings together the artist, the craftsperson, and the industrialist - all in one project from which everyone will benefit just as the Arab woman and child will benefit by endorsing part of its income for humanitarian projects in those countries that suffer the woes of war.”

Through Peace of Art proceeds, LoYAC has acquired a building structure to establish the LOYAC Child and Youth Holistic Center. In Ramadan, LOYAC Home volunteers will renovate the structure to make it safe and functional for use. They are also bringing in specialized professional behavioral therapists to train local mentors and facilitators to help and rehabilitate the children and youth through involving them in art activities that will rebuild their minds. The LOYAC Child and Youth Holistic Center, which will host at least 400 children and youth a year, aim to be a gateway to rehabilitation, healing, personal exploration, and fulfillment.

GadgetsAdidas, the German maker of sportswear and equipment, announced that it will start marketing its first series of sport shoes manufactured by robots in Germany in 2017.

Over 20 years after Adidas moved its production activities to Asia, where they are mainly produced by hand, Chief Executive Herbert Hainer, unveiled to the public the groups new prototype “Speed Factory” in Ansbach, Southern Germany.

The new state-of-the-art 4,600-square-metre plant is still being built, but Adidas showed off a foretaste of it to the press, promising the automatism of shoe production, enabling the shoes to be made more quickly and closer to its sales outlets. The first test series of around 500 pairs of shoes will be sold in the third quarter of 2016.However, the large-scale production will begin in 2017, while planning

a second”Speed Factory” in the United States. Further, Hainer insisted that the speed factories would not immediately replace the work of the sub-contractors in Asia. Gerd Manz, head of innovation and technology stated, “Our goal is not full automization” In the longer term, Adidas is planning to build robot-operated factories in Britain or in France, and could even produce the shirts of Germany’s national football team in its home country, said Hainer.

Further, for everyone out there who has to have the latest kicks, Hainer promises that the shoes made in Germany would sell at a similar price to those produced in Asia.

• Arch-rival Nike is also developing its robot-operated factory, but Adidas was well ahead of its rivals in this area, Hainer insisted.

• The production in 2015 was at 301 million pairs of sports shoes.

• In order to reach its target growth target by 2020, they production requires an addition 30 million pairs of shoes each year.

• Adidas is facing rising production costs in Asia, where it employs around one million workers.

Obesity is a medical condition where excess body fat has accumulated resulting in a wide range of disabilities and potentially fatal health conditions. It makes sense then that fat has long been nutrition’s bad guy. It is easy for people to believe that consuming fats makes you fat, but is that true? There are many different kinds of fats such as saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, trans, and many more subsets, each of which behaves differently when consumed. Some types of fats are helpful and considered healthy for you, while others like trans fats have severely negative effects on your system. Research shows that while there are unhealthy fats, sugar is the single worst ingredient in the modern diet. Sugar has become the greatest danger to our health and is the leading cause of the current obesity epidemic.

that sugar has on the body and how our bodies store excess sugar as fat. While you need fat to function since around fifteen percent to thirty percent of your body is comprised of fats and your cells need fats to build cell walls, there is no underlying benefit to consuming sugars. Refined sugars lack fiber, minerals, proteins, fat, and enzymes and essentially they are simply empty calories. This means that when you eat sugar containing foods your body must use vital nutrients from healthy cells to metabolize the food. Although it is clear that added sugar is a main cause of serious health issues such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and many more – it is everywhere. Even if you are aware of the health risks caused by consuming sugar, it is hard to avoid as sugar is often hidden in nutrition labels under different names. Some of the popular alternative names for sugar include: corn syrup, agave nectar,

barley malt syrup, beet sugar, fructose, fruit juice concentrate, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, maple syrup, molasses, and many many more.

Many people make the assumption that since fats have more calories per gram than carbohydrates or proteins then it makes us fat. This is simply untrue. While our weight essentially comes down to calories in and calories out, where our calories come from makes a huge difference in our health. Often times, foods advertised as healthy are low fat or fat free. These foods however are typically loaded with sugar to make up for the lack of fat. Our bodies converts processed carbs into sugar. This increase in blood sugar levels spikes our insulin and leads our bodies to create fat cells. The truth is, instead of trying to avoid fats in order to be healthier and lose weight work on cutting out the fat producing molecule – sugar!

My dad took me to my first football game at the 1990 World Cup. I was only 10 years old, since that day football has always been a big part of my life. I grew up loving watching and playing sports, there are certain values you gain that come in handy in life generally like leadership, team spirit, and discipline.

As children in Kuwait we played football anywhere we could, in the public parks, at the beach, but as I grew older it became increasingly clear that opportunities to play sports as a woman become less as you grow older.

In my years attending a private high school in Kuwait we had the opportunity to join the basketball, volleyball, tennis and other sports teams. We competed in Kuwait and regionally as well. The only sport we didn’t have was football. During my last year in high school I attended the World Scholar Athlete Games, where I played football as part of a team for the very first time.And it felt great. I knew then that, one of my goals upon returning home was to work towards establishing a National Kuwaiti women’s football team within 10 years.

Soon after I graduated, high schools began football programs for girls.Although this was a great step forward, these female footballers had nowhere to continue playing after high school. During this time I was in the US for my university studies, I became a member of the National Union of Kuwaiti Students, and in 2001, as part of our social activities, we hosted was one of the first Futsal tournaments for women in Kuwait. This was one of the few opportunities women had to play football competitively outside of high school. In 2002, I returned home and set out to accomplish my goal, not realizing the many obstacles waiting for me.

My dream was establish Kuwait’s first Female football team, but outside of highschool, there was absolutely no venue for women to play football outdoors. We approached several

clubs in Kuwait to ask if we could use their fields but to no avail.

For the next several years, indoor tournaments continued here and there but overall progress was quite slow. Most of the tournaments were held indoors and in an enclosed area, primarily due to cultural sensitivities regarding women and football.

In 2005,as part of my new job at the American University of Kuwait, I began coaching the women’s football team. Working with my colleagues at AUK and counterparts at GUST, KU and ACK we established the University Champions Cup, a competitive, inter-collegiate tournament that included multiple sports. This was the first university tournament for women football to ever be held in Kuwait.

Now high school graduatescan finally have the opportunity to continue playing in university as well. Yet this only included women who were in university, and specifically in these three or four universities. While this was a great step forward, many women were excluded. We needed to expand access beyond highschool and university.

The opportunity came when fields for hire sprung up all over Kuwait. Finally, for a fee, women in Kuwait had access to outdoor fields beyond the universities. We rented these fields and hosted mini tournaments open to any team or individual that registered. We were pleasantly surprised at the enthusiasm and the many new faces that came to participate.

They created their own teams, practiced on their own time and we suddenly found ourselves

with an expanding pool of dedicated female footballers. While these tournaments were a great step towards providing access beyond high schools and universities, we were still functioning without any official capacity.We needed the support of the Kuwaiti Football Association (KFA) to be able to form a national league and a national team, to represent Kuwait internationally.

Due to our continued activism in trying to combat the neglect we faced, as well as our work in providing opportunities and access to Kuwaiti female footballers, a golden opportunity presented itself in 2006. I was invited by the KFA to participate in FIFA’s Women’s Football Conference for Muslim Countries held in Doha, where I presented on the history of women’s football in Kuwait. Things were finally moving forward!

Upon our return from the conference, we worked with the KFA to establish a Women’s Football Committee (WFC), finally providing official oversight and support. The months following the establishment of the Women’s football committee we were able to come up with a three-year plan the would set us on the path of creating the first Kuwaiti women’s football team, my dream was finally coming true!

My happiness was short-lived however, the endemic corruption that has long plagued Kuwaiti sports did not take long to manifest.Our experience, knowledge and resources in the development of the sport gave us an upper hand, which was perceived as a threat to the status quo, and the authorities in charge of women’s sports. Seen as a rival and not a colleague, I was dismissed from the Committee.

This was a huge disappointment;our efforts to try and systemize women’s football suffered.

The KFA and WFC however,were under great pressure from FIFA, which gives $25,000 annually to the KFA specifically for the development of women’s football. This pressure culminated in the WFCestablishing Kuwait’s First Women’s Football team.

Although the team was finally established, it

seemed like a façade. The first ever official game by the Kuwaiti National Team was played against Palestine on an 11-aside field. The women who participated had never even practiced on an 11-aside pitch. It seemed unfair to put these women in positions where they had to face teams much more prepared than they are. The final score was 17-0. It was disheartening. What was meant to be a historic and great moment for female sports in the country was overshadowed by the unpreparedness of the Federation for what was coming.

Many of the team members upon returning home, were jeered and mocked for their performance. Yet it should have been the KFA that should have been mocked for fielding a team that was completely unprepared for the sake of showing FIFA “progress”. The team members felt, betrayed and used. Many of them refused to play for the national team again. The government continued operating in an ad hoc manner, gathering whatever players they could before a scheduled game.

Meanwhile, for the rest of the female footballers in Kuwait who refused to play for the KFA, my fellow activists establish a social yet competitive league called the Kuwait Women Football League (KWFL) in 2010. The league is in its 7th season now and going strong. This season saw nine teams compete, with the league going down to the wire, decided by the last game of the season.

While this journey has been long and hard at times, I look back at what we were able to accomplish and I feel proud. When I was in high school, women’s football was non-existent and culturally unaccepted. Today, women’s football is played in high schools, in universities and in social leagues; and although women’s football still has a long way to go. We can see small changes in the country’s sports leadership that give us hope for the future.

In today’s world of social media and the ever so popular Instagram, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have officially announced their relationship. The vertical race took place in Kuwait’s tallest skyscraper, AlHamra. 250 participants gathered outside the ground floor, early Saturday morning, in the rain in order to race up 60 floors. That is what we call dedication.

You could feel the energy by the start line, with every drop of rain as another motivator pumping up all the athletes. Everyone was stretching and warming up for their turn, one by one they started their challenge to reach the 60th floor. Taiba Al Nouri was the fastest of the 76 participating ladies, with an outstanding performance; her finish time was 10 minutes 54 seconds. Out of the 174 men, Abdulaziz Al Khamis finished in an astonishing 8 minutes 35 seconds.

At the top, the racers cooled down with refreshing drinks, and stay pumped up with the music. They got to walk around the sponsors’ booths and enjoy the beautiful view of Kuwait out the windows and from the balcony. Athletes! Start training for next year.

Kuwait will be witnessing a very distinctive event during Ramadan this year as Red Bull Art of Can Exhibition will be on display on 15th June until 25th June. The exhibition, which is set to receive visitors starting 16th and VIPS on the 15th, will feature a variety of art pieces that depict the talent and craftsmanship of the participants, along with their skill in creating a piece of art where the Red Bull can is the only point of inspiration.

The Red Bull Art of Can offers a platform for anyone, regardless of age, who wants to explore his or her creative talent. Artists, students, grandparents and all those in between were invited to submit their works of art. The Red Bull Art of Can is a true expression of one’s imagination, with little or no restrictions placed on the budding artist.

Introducing the Digital Category for the First Time in Kuwait. This year, a new category will be featured; in addition to the physical art, the digital displayed art was introduced to the competition for the first time. The physical piece of art should include the actual Red Bull can as the primary material in the final work.

However, the digital displayed art is a work of art that can be displayed on a screen and should include a digital version of the Red Bull can in the final piece. Submissions could take the form of an animation, a digital short film, stop motion, or GIF.

The primary material/inspiration must be a Red Bull can, but plenty of imagination and creativity is necessary too. Be it a sculpture, a picture, a 3D model, a mobile, digital illustration or a piece of modern art, as long as it is beautiful, colorful, clever and amusing.

A bit of historyThe art of creating masterpieces out of Red Bull cans started back in 1999. Exhibitions have been held all around the globe from Europe to New Zealand. Countries like Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Singapore, USA, UAE, Kuwait and many more. This year, Red Bull Art of Can will be taking place in Kuwait only.

Student entrepreneurs from across Kuwait showcase their ventures to judges and peers in the first ever Startup Kuwait College Entrepreneurship Week. Students from Kuwait University, Gulf University of Science & Technology, the American University of Kuwait, Box Hill College of Kuwait and the Australian College of Kuwait each held entrepreneurship competitions for potential cash and prizes, and the chance to advance to the Startup Kuwait National Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition at the end of May.

Since January, over 600 college students in Kuwait have participated in Startup Kuwait events, and 110 student entrepreneur teams submitted entries to the program. On May 29th, the top 11 teams also pitched to a group of distinguished entrepreneurs, business leaders and government officials for a chance to win various prizes and support for their venture.

The students were judged on several criteria, including innovation, opportunity, the relevance to Kuwait and the GCC, the business model, progress to date, social responsibility, and other markers set at the individual college level.

They learned about Lean Startup and the Minimum Viable Product, the importance to guerrilla marketing and social media, and how to directly communicate with customers.

The majority of the student teams fell into three categories. The largest group wanted to be service providers in Kuwait - ranging from business documentation to salon and beauty. The second largest group wanted to start restaurants, cafés and entertainment venues. And finally, a few enterprising teams were looking to create new technologies to solve problems in Kuwait.

During fall 2016, the Startup Kuwait program plans to expand to include more universities and colleges, a larger portion of students, faculty and recent alumni to the program.
