Dear Students,

Welcome back from your summer vacation. I surely hope you all had a great break and are now back with renewed enthusiasm and energy. In this issue we asked some students about their views on politics. You know, all my life, I have been hearing, reading and debating the difference between men and women’s perceptions and brain structure which invariably concludes that while women get stuck on the small details, men tend to look at the bigger picture and thus are more result orientated.Except in Politics!!!!Somehow it seems that men get so engrossed with their own personal hunger for power and control, they completely forget what politics is all about to begin with!We somehow have all forgotten that politics started with Greek philosophers, headed by Aristotle, trying to implement ethics on the way we deal with one another as a society, the way we deal with others as a country and the way we deal with ourselves as humans. How, can someone explain to me, have we turned politics against us?!Inhuman is the least that I can say to all that my eyes have been subjected to as of late!!Politics you say!!?!Go back to work, that is what I say.Go back to being human, productive, creative, compassionate, loving, giving and forgiving.Politics you say?!?!Stop the destructive blabber and focus on your own personal issues, once that is solved, the whole community will rise. What I wish for you my students is to stay away from politics.Refuse to engage in nonsense that begets nothing but hate and divide.Refuse anyone who wants to talk politics and let us talk about your achievements, your future. May you have the most productive, peaceful future,

Till next issue,

Dear STUDENTALKers, It is this time of the year were everyone is whining because university started, and you are now reminiscing about the glorious days you spent in Spain, France, Gulf Countries and/or other exotic locations. Been there, done that...but a little routine is important because it makes your life more organized. I bet you’ve missed reading STUDENTALK on campus! In this issue, we are interviewing Faisal Al-Othuniyah on the cover, the youngest Kuwaiti journalist, who writes interesting articles at Al-Kuwaityah Newspaper. Don’t forget to read about the interesting fashion features for American Eagle as well as H&M and LimeLight. Also, read about AUM Students’ experience at Elevation Burger, they enjoyed a wonderful summer job off and on premise. There is a surprise for AUM students in the feature :) I hope you enjoy a wonderful 2015 year on your campus. Remember, university life neither all about studying nor is it all about having fun. Gaining experience during this time is imperative because as you are learning, you build your character and broaden your horizon. Join a club or start a club, organize events and do some charity work!Stay tuned for the next issue, Raghda El Deeb

COVER STORY

What does it mean to be liberal or conservative? Which is more extreme?

We give the students of Kuwait a platform from which to express their beliefs on the matters that affect them. Here, students receive the opportunity to voice their opinions, whilst allowing others to hear them out.

WITHIN THIS

SECTIONTHIS MONTHWE ASKED

Ali Sayed, 21AUK, AccountingLiberal means to be open to suggestion while conservative means open to less and almost closed to any suggestion against certain beliefs. In my opinion conservative is more extreme.

Ameenah Al-Foadari, 20, GUST, Computer ScienceProblems will surely increase if both parties become extremists, and there will be no union between the individuals in society is both parties are extreme.

Sara Al-Hakeem, 21KU, English Literature If society was extremely conservative, then it will become very closed. If the case was the opposite, it will attract other beliefs.

Kareem Mustapha, 20 AUK, Management & MarketingLiberal is living in a pure political world. Conservative is involving both religion and political issues. In my opinion, liberal is more appropriate to the societies all around the world. Conservative is more extreme.

Ahmed Saad, 18, AUK, Computer EngineeringLiberalism is the belief that politics cannot be part of a religion, or cancelling out the religion part of politics. Conservative is the exact opposite politics wise. Both sides could be extreme.

Bader El-Mostafa, 20, AUK, AccountingLiberal is having the freedom to think, and having control over your decisions; although conservative tend to keep their opinions for themselves.

Ahmad Mustapha, 21, AUK, Accounting & ManagementA liberal is to be free and have your full rights to take your own decisions and a conservative is to be free to a certain point with so much limits and I think that conservatism is more extreme.

Joseph G. El Neaman, 20 AUK, UndeclaredTo me, being liberal means seeing things with an open mind whereas, being conservative is looking at things in a traditional way. Depending on a given situation both have the potentials to be extreme.

Nigel’Dsouza, 23, AUK Accounting & FinanceLiberal – means freedom to do anything, independently and standing on your own feet. Conservative – means losing freedom and one more stubborn and dogmatic - more rigid. I believe liberal to be more extreme.

Ahmed Al-Sayyar, 20 AUK, UndeclaredIn my opinion, a conservative is more extreme because to be a liberal is to open your mind to different concepts.

Camera Shy

Camera ShyCamera Shy Camera Shy Camera Shy

Mohab Fathalla, 23AUK, Graphic DesignTo be liberal is to do what makes you feel right but without interfering in other people’s concerns. Being liberal is more extreme as you might not put limits.

Natasha Al-Houti, 21, AUK, Media and CommunicationTo be liberal is to have freedom but without crossing the line towards someone else’s/ conservative is to be more close minded to new ideas. (Conservative is more extreme).

Shahad Al-Ruwayeh, 20, GUST, MarketingIf liberals and conservatives became extremists, this will cause society to a vast argumentative field and might also cause some kind of antagonism.

Lana Suhail, 18GUST, MOBIf both parties are extreme society will lose balance and there will be no stability. Freedom on its high is bad, each according to the country he/she lives in.

Abdulaziz Al-Turky, 21, GUST, FinanceFirst of all, society will get divided to groups if both parties become extremists, then social problems will spread and that could lead to chaos.

Dalal Al-Ghanim, 21, GUST, MIS If liberals became extremists, society will lose respect and values will change. If extremely conservative, people will what is forbidden in shadows.

Aysha Al-Najdi , 20, GUST, Management (CAMERA SHY)If a liberal was an extremist, he/she will lose their beliefs. If a conservative is extreme, he/she will overly close-minded, and no room for freedom will be left.

Ahmed Khalil, 21, AUK, Economics & Finance Being extreme has nothing to do with life styles or ideologies. Being extreme is the inability to listen to others. Thus both extremes are equal.

Muneerah Al-Husainan, 22, KU, Architecture It does not matter which is extreme as everything that exceeds the limits will tend to be harmful eventually.

Maryam Al-Olaimy, 20 GUST, FinanceIf liberals became extreme, society will become some sort of a jungle, where are no rules and people will behave irresponsibly. However, when conservatives become extreme, this will minimize the experience of enjoying life.

Mariam Al-Ammari, 23, GUST, International BusinessBeing liberal or conservative, each to their own beliefs. However, if both parties become extreme a civil war might occur.

Danah Ahmad, 20, AUK, AnthropologyTo be liberal is to be free and to be conservative is to be constructed. There both extremes depending on how you view it

Maryam Al-Hakeem, 19,AUK, Mass CommunicationExtremism is off-beat of all principles, and whoever deviates from the principles, will lose her/his way.

Hadi Najafpour, 17, AUK, Electrical EngineeringTo be liberal is to act, think freely with no risk of feeling oppression while conservatism is acting within the limits of the society it is based in; conservative is more extreme.

Zeinab Mohammed 20, AUK, Computer EngineeringI think being liberal is more extreme. People here in the Arab world aren’t used to this kind of freedom, that’s why they can adapt with this huge change.

Solaiman Akbar, 21, AUK, EconomicsLiberal is the state of being open to new ideas and advocate modernity. Conservatism is holding on to traditional values and ideas. Neither are extreme. A person chooses the extent in which category they fall into.

Elaf Bahman, 19, GUST, AccountingExtremists of liberals and conservatives will produce social conflicts and sectarianism

Hadeel Al-Saleh, 23, GUST, Public RelationsExtremism in any political or ideological aspects can get things out of track. Chaos can apply for the conservatives and the liberals

Farah Chaker, 20, AUK, Mass Communication & Media In my opinion, liberals are more extreme.

Ghazi Al-Mutawa, 19GUST, Finance Extremism leads the individuals to chaos. As the reason of that any extremist will not welcome any other ideology. Therefore, he/she will get used to only one ideology, the mind set and will judge things from one angle.

Mohammad Khorsheed, 23 AUK, Business Being conservative focuses on the

traditional in style and manner while

being liberal mean becoming more

favorable of change. I think both can be

extreme into their own ways.

Hanini Hassan, 23AOU, Business To be liberal means to be open to certain ideas such as private property, freedom of religion and civil rights, while to be conservative means to preserve certain ideologies and emphasize stability. I think to be conservative is more extreme.

Ahmad Al-Abdul Razad, 18, AUK, Computer EngineeringBeing liberal is to allow others the right or freedom to do anything they want as without offending anyone and being conservative is allowing people these same rights and freedoms but with more strict boundaries that vary depending on the people’s culture and religion.

Dana Al-Shami, 19, KU, English LiteratureI believe conservative are more extreme.

Mohammad Al-Kandari, 20, GUST, Computer Science I don’t think there is a problem in being conservative, when it comes to traditions and religion, but being extremely liberal will lead the one to step on others freedom. Plus, a man cannot be fully free

Ahmad Al-Kandari, 19, GUST, Business Administration I believe that conservative tend to be more extreme.

Shaza Wattar, 18, AUK, International Relations If liberals are completely free, then they would stop protesting for liberalism, because they achieved what they want with no restrictions. However, if conservatives become extremists, they would turn against the state to spread their ideology through undesirable means.

Camera Shy

Ahmad Ibrahim, 23AOU, Management The views on being liberal and conservative are changing constantly so there is no strong definition. However, I think conservatives tend to be more extreme.

Aqsa Altaf, 20AUK, UndecidedI think being Liberal opens one’s mind on several aspects in life. However, being extreme in both cases is not beneficial to the community.

LOYACTRAVEL A THOUSAND MILES TO BUILD SMILESBANGALORE, INDIA

Typically, we view charities and donations as monetary. We’re asked to pay a certain amount to support a cause or place some spare change in a tiny donation box, yet the supposed changes we’re contributing towards don’t really happen. Similar to the experience of every mother, I and others felt a huge responsibility toward its growth and success,” said Al Sabah, who described the 10-year journey of AUK as “everything but easy”. As a founder of AUK, Al Sabah looked back at the 10-year life of AUK as a collaborative endeavor that “many hands and minds” helped to create. “For all of us AUK was a first. We labored, guided, made good and sometimes not so good decisions, we tried to correct, we were successful in part, and were challenged by the expected, as well as the unexpected. But despite all of the ups and downs, we moved forward, and we made every attempt at holding the course and the direction,” she said

KUWAITI LOCAL BUSINESS

NAT’S BAKESWITH LOVE Customization Unique recipes Freshly Baked and Hand-Made Homely and lovable feeling. All of the above is offered by your truly Natalie Van Rooyen at Nat’s Bakes With Love. Obtaining the passion for baking along with her Culinary Arts Diploma allows her to offer mouth-watering cup cakes, cookies, cakes and everything that might not ever come to your mind like Red Velvet Crème Cheese Brownie! Starting the business with Osama Nusaibi, Ms. Van Rooyen successfully created a strong customers bass through home business. Now her shop is up and running in Salmiya, even its decorations will make you step into another world!

Why baking? Similar to Kuwait, every weekend in South Africa families would gather for lunch. Before I studied culinary, my aunt, mother and grandmother would all cook and bake for family gatherings. I learned family recipes while watching my grandmother bake her famous chocolate cakes, with crème or caramel fillings, none of the customary toppings. My mother said that “I need to teach you everything so that one day you when you get married, your husband wouldn’t say, your mother didn’t teach you anything.” Learning how to cook and bake allowed me to help my working mother to prepare dinner. It never felt like a chore, it made me happy knowing I can help my mother and contribute to the household. Nowadays, it became a stress-reliever. After work, I would go to bakery, to my haven.

You have mentioned chief school, how and where did you obtain your Culinary Arts Diploma? After High School, I worked as a waitress at one of the Five Stars Hotel in South Africa. They had an apprenticeship program where they offered employees to opportunity to develop a career within the hotel food and beverage industry. It was a great opportunity to study and work simultaneously. It developed my cooking fundamentals and increased my learning curiosity. One of the main things I learned was discipline. While cooking at home you add ingredients according to your intuition. In culinary school, you learn the importance of time management and the precision with ingredients. Moreover, the diploma enhance my team building abilities, as you work with other chiefs, it is important to coordinate. It is not a trial/error process, the plate has to be perfect so there is no room for mistakes.

When did you embark on your business journey? When I used to work for Villa Moda, there was an expedition for local artists, and I asked Sheikh Majid’s permission to showcase my cupcakes. Several customers loved them and encouraged me to start my own business. I sat with one of my friends and doodled the name and logo. Out of many who asked, I felt that Osama Nusaibi would make the best partner. He wanted to start a successful business and was enthusiastic about Nat’s Bakes With Love. Three months later, we launched the home business.

I need to teach you everything so that one day you when you get married, your husband wouldn’t

say, your mother didn’t teach you anything - Marion Van Rooyen

How does Nat’s Bakes With Love differentiates from any other bakery? Nat’s Bakes With Love is a small, cozy and provides a very homely feeling. Everything is hand-made and freshly baked. Mostly, we work with family recipes. The recipes we take from renown places are always tweaked. For example, the Crack Pie, Momofuku New York’s best seller is made from caramelized oat cookie base with a toffee center. It very addictive, hence its name. At Nat’s Bakes With Love, we sprinkle sea salt on top to give you the salted caramel flavor and bake the base until its almost burnt to enjoy the scrumptious caramelized taste. The aim is not look extremely perfect like the franchised and international business, we bake family recipes to accentuate the home-like atmosphere. It should look mouth-watering, fresh and not the almost perfect artificial look. The bakery offers this Whimsical feeling with cupcakes and ponies being painted on the wall. It is the same whimsical feeling you should get with every bite from our goods!

How does Nate’s Bakes With Love compete with local competition?Competition entices others to be always on top of their game. Customers want things to look good, so we provide great packing and make sure everything tastes good! Some competitors are constructive such as Bibi Hayat from November Bakery were supportive of my business. Others see me as a threat. However, Kuwait is big enough for everyone to work harmoniously.

How will you ensure that your bakery will continuously grow on long term basis? It is important to establish yourself as a contender and not a trend. Kuwaiti customer is adventurous, they like to try new things! This keeps me want to me on top of my game. That’s why we created the Red Velvet Crème Cheese Brownie, its different and unique and guess what? It’s our number one seller. We also offer customization. If you have any recipe from your own country, we make it for you! We never shun our customers away. I might not have apple crumple on my menu, but if you ask for it you will get it. Sometimes when customers orders goods in short notice yet, we try our best to make it happen.

What inspired you to compete in the International Earth Science Olympiad?During Middle school, I used to look up to those students who participated in the previous International Earth Science Olympiad. Amazed by their achievements while reading the news papers, I was determined to join the competition and win. Therefore, I decided to study and work hard in order to participate, and win to make those around me proud.

How did you prepare yourself for such competition? On the national level, I had to study Earth Science after school in order to prepare for an exam that is taken by all schools in Kuwait. Those who highly achieved on the national level had to take another exam in order to be qualified for the international level. The work load and dedication therefore increased, as we had to take lectures after school in the Science Association every day until the competition took place. The international competition was held in India where we competed with 27 different countries, Kuwait being the only Arab participant. Fortunately, I won the Bronze Medal on the international level. I was also involved in another sector in the competition called the International Team Field Investigation in which our team won the Gold Medal. It was such a pleasurable and educational experience.

How did you feel being the only Kuwaiti and Arab awarded with two different medals? I could not believe it when they called my name out twice! I was proud to not only be representing Kuwait but also the Arab countries. I am glad I did it well.

What did you learn from this experience? The experience was not only rewarding on the educational part, as I met several students from different countries, but I learnt a lot about their cultures too. It was challenging not being able to use any sort of communication technology such as T.V and phones. What eased it up is that we went to cultural areas in Mysore, India. Very enthralling! I was glad that there was more to the experience than just studying and taking exams. Another valuable lesson that I have learnt is the appreciation of team spirit and how important it is to work together towards one goal. I have many friends from different parts of the world and I am still in touch with them today.

FATEMAH SALEMBRONZE AND GOLDEN MEDALS AT THE INTERNATIONAL EARTH SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

There is nothing that makes the STUDENTALK Team more proud than interviewing a student who well-represented Kuwait by winning both a Bronze and Gold Medal. We take pride in introducing Miss Salem, who worked extremely hard during the International Earth Science Olympaid with her team. There were 27 participants from different countries around the world. Kuwait was the only Arab country competing on the international level. Read Salem’s interview with STUDENTALK Magazine for further inspiration.

Who was your number one supporter? My number one supporters were my parents, who encouraged me to participate, allowed me to believe in my abilities and motivated me to carry on! And how can I forget my geology teachers who continuously supported me. Moreover, students who participated in the previous earth science Olympiad were a great inspiration too.

What were the major difficulties you faced during the competition? Fortunately, there were not many difficulties or obstacles as I received extensive amount of support from everyone around me.

Do you advocate other students to take part in the International Earth Science Olympiad, and why? In my opinion, I think Kuwait should invest in encouraging its youth to participate in the Olympiads. Yes it is a difficult process and it requires much effort. However, it is definitely worth it!

I think Kuwait should invest in encouraging its youth to

participate in the International Earth Science Olympiads.

How did you discover your talent? I started learning how to remix, produce and make original songs in 2009 with my friends, Mohammed Al-Mansour and Waleed Khalaf. We had a band called (B.Ace). We were only high school dreamers at that time. Due to the support of our school and the people around us, we learned more and developed till we honed our talent. We were an upbeat band with so much raw passion, but Mohammed and Waleed traveled to study abroad so now the music I create is mostly by and about myself such as the songs, Never Thought, and Hurt.

What differentiates a producer from a DJ?A DJ would have to combine songs together and play them to make a full song that sounds different from the original. I work from scratch, it’s like having a blank piece of paper and you’re scribbling your thoughts on it, and the end result would be an organized proper arranged version of those thoughts. Most of the time a song only starts with one sound, could be a drum beat or a musical note, then with time more instruments and sounds are blended in. Mohammed Al-Mansour and I started working on our song SIRENS, in 2009 it was a combination of choir sounds, and it wasn’t until summer of 2013 that we decided to make use of these choir sounds. Who knew we could make a choir chant turn into a hip-hop/Dubstep song with rap verses

What are the obstacles you have faced while trying to show your talents to the world? The biggest obstacle was that I grew up in a house full of talented musicians and they wanted me to be something different. Also, my family thought me producing music was only a hobby or even sometimes a distraction, but the one thing I learned is that what people think of what you do, doesn’t change how terrific it is or what it really means to you.

Any last words?I would like to send my special thanks to my partners and my believers, Mohammed Al-Mansour and Waleed Khalaf. Also I would like to thank, my brother Hammad Bahman for his support and his constant badgering for new songs. And last but not least, thanks to my mother for believing I could somehow sound like Michael Jackson one day and Latifa Al-Qallaf for re-inspiring me. Also I would like to say that Music could be meaningless but if you took one second and allowed it to touch your heart; you wouldn’t even know that you like it until after you’ve fallen in love with it.

FAWAZ BAHMAN MELODIES OF A PRODUCER

Music could be a refuge; you could crawl into the places between the notes and curl back to your loneliness. You could let go of everything and just live with the pure feelings of your heart. StudenTalk has finally encountered someone with an extremely strong connection to music; he is a 21 year old Electrical Engineering student at AUM, who produces music. Fawaz Bahman, is a talented producer and after asking him a couple of questions we found out he has a great story behind his smile.

When did you discover your talents in writing poetry? It all started at the age of 15, what encouraged me to start writing poetry was that my personality back then was very coy. I rarely had the courage to express my mind or emotions freely. Poetry was my gateway for self-expression, and it has been for the past 9 years.

What inspired the title of your book “Voiceless Diaries”?“Voiceless Diaries” is not a title that articulates my personality; however, you would be appalled on the number of people who find it hard to speak their mind about the truth and deepest emotions due to fear. Thus, others use their diaries as a road to expressiveness. “Voiceless Diaries” is my voice of life lessons to the world.

Where do you receive your inspiration to write your poetry? My inspiration comes from several situations in life. I believe in these certain situations; we find ourselves the least expressive. “Voiceless Diaries” acts as the voice of anyone who finds it hard to say the right thing during the right moment. Also, good music can be inspiring as well.

What elements did you use in order to write your books? My passion also includes drawing, though my art is somewhat mysterious, yet I use symbols in order to convey a message to audiences. I use some of my artistic elements to write my poetry. Therefore, instead of using symbols, I use several examples and analogies in my poetry in order to portray a message to the writer. I believe that poetries provide life lessons which are timeless.

Was it difficult to achieve your goal? Arabic poetry is something that the Arab region is known for; however, English poetry did not receive the same credit. With the opening of English majors here in Kuwait, I believe that people are more educated now about the English poetry. Thus, reaching my goal became easier and support has increased thanks to the people I met later and my many followers in Social Media.

VOLUNTEER WORK فخر الكويت

What is your main driving force? We, Hawraa Abul and Fatma Marafie, want to benefit society through our project, Charity Foundation Kuwait. We achieve this by selling bracelets at a small price, which may seem inexpensive to us but worth a lot to those in need. Every month, we target a new demographic and provide them with household rudiments.

As young women, what challenges have you faced with getting yourselves out there? What advantages do you feel you have? There were many challenges, but overcoming them was what gave us our strength. The foremost challenge was our physical limitation. When we first started, it was just us the two of us with over 160 packages of giveaways to handle. We had to ensure that our packages were delivered before it reached the peak temperatures during the day. It was a bit dangerous, but we are definitely gratified! The advantage we have is that people encourage us to pursue morally and socially rewarding activities.

Why do you think people opt to give to your organization? We are a nonprofit organization, and our activities are aimed for social betterment. Our customers buy a bracelet that they wear as a symbol of goodwill, and they have a keepsake of their donation. Our focus is mainly aimed towards the ancillary workers who make our lives easier.

How did you select your target? Did you have a specific encounter with an ancillary worker that pushed you to start your project? We used to go walking daily at 5 a.m. Later, we would go to the bank and withdraw an amount between the two of us. We would then break the bills and distribute the change to the workers. We went there because its where workers were more in need. There was one worker that really struck a chord: he was walking alone holding empty bags. We gave him one KD and his eyes filled with shock and gratitude. This inspired us to do something more valuable with that money and we got started with the Charity Foundation.

VOLUNTEER WORK

HAWRAA ABUL& FATMA MARAFIESEVERAL PHILANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES THROUGH SELLING BRACELETSHawraa Abul and Fatma Marafie work hand-in-hand for the betterment of Kuwaiti society through Charity Foundation Kuwait. On their own, they formed the organization to help out while doing the labor work in order to support the ancillary workers. They sell beautiful bracelets not only to generate revenue for charity, but to remind people of goodwill. To know more about their humanitarian activities and the struggles they dealt with as women, keep reading this fruitful interview by STUDENTALK Magazine.

It is very typical for startups to deal with criticism. What did critics say about you, and how did you overcome it?We faced a bit of controversy. Whenever someone purchased our bracelets, they would send us a picture of them wearing it with their usual accessories as a show of incorporation. Whenever we would post these pictures, we were met with so much criticism, with comments such as, “why are you showing off your Rolexes on a charity page?” “If you sell those bracelets, you can feed several families!” and so on. People misunderstood the point of the bracelets. We loved seeing them being coupled with Cartiers and Arpels because that meant giving charity was an established staple.

The advantage we have is that people

encourage us to pursue morally and

socially rewarding activities.

How did you align your work with Ramadan? Did you freeze the project, or go into overdrive as it was the Islamic season of charity? For Ramadan, we had several activities. Due to it being the Islamic season of the charity, we increased our work tremendously. We had Iftar every Friday for the under-privileged. We also provided food supplies to families who weren’t able to come to our Iftar, which was held in different locations each Friday. We gave away over 800 meals during Ramadan. We had a special edition Girgai’an where people would donate with us and get a Lantern including the bracelet and candy inside. For Eid, we wanted to do something that would make everyone smile even if they didn’t get a chance to participate. We collaborated with KACCH (Kuwait Association for Care of Children in Hospital) in the NBK Hospital for cancer children. A morning of fun and entertainment for Kuwait’s’ very own sick children was the most meaningful to us. Seeing the children smile and forget their pain was worth all the donations we could ever get.

What are your majors? Do you mix your academia with work to produce the best results? Fatma studies Electrical Engineering, and I study international business. I believe that I got the opportunity to integrate my studies with the Charity Foundation, because I dealt with people as clients. At the end of the day, we are selling a product and we needed to market it accordingly to the niche. Using all the tactics that International Business provides, our services extended far beyond a basic buy-and-sell platform; rather, we created an image that became a movement and this kept our clientele hooked.

Do you have any long-term or large-scale projects?Within the next few years, we want to take advantage of our time in university and branch out in society. We hope to become established, and since we are both founders in different universities, we have higher hopes of becoming more widespread. Also, we want to be granted official documents from the government to establish our longevity here in Kuwait.

Ask Questions. Whether you’re studying in a group or being lectured, write down a list of questions that require clarification. Asking questions is a huge part of learning. It is vital that everything chapter should be very clear you before you start a new one. If you noticed, all chaptered are somewhat linked together.

Test Yourself. After studying, quiz yourself to make sure that you’ve covered the information and that it’s clear to you. There are many different ways of testing yourself. For example, you can use flash cards, which are considered ideal for boosting your memory and concentration skills. Do not postpone your studying until the night before. Avoid distractions such as the TV, music or your phone while you’re studying and keep them away from your studying area. Make sure that all your material is ready and that your studying environment is quiet and organized to avoid disruptions. Enjoy University Life. We did provide several tips regarding studying, however, there is much more to university than just studying. You can join a university club or even be the president of it. Be involved in several activities that are related to your major. They are very beneficial for your resume.

Getting an A is very easy, maintaining a successful path is hard. An A does not determine whether you’re an excelled student or not. Absorb all the information you have like a dry sponge to illuminate you career path. Making friends is also important as they will add a magical touch to your experience.

It’s a new working year and in order for you to excel and succeed in your field and studies, you have to approach your semesters with a positive and ambitious attitude. Most students believe that it’s quite difficult to earn an A. In fact, it’s not at all. Organization is the key to your success. Take it from someone who recently graduated!

Elevation Burger is renowned for its deliciously organic burgers and fresh cut fries prepared with heart healthy olive oil to cater for the health conscious. Taking it a step further, Elevation Burger aspires to be part of the university students’ community. Through LOYAC’s Youth Summer Program, Elevation Burger involved many university students, some of which are AUM students, on and off restaurant operations. With a new store opening at the American University of the Middle East, the Elevation Burger team identified AUM students from the LOYAC Youth Summer Program and worked closely with them to better understand AUM students’ needs.

Elevation Burger gave AUM students the opportunity to pitch their ideas for events, promotions and engaging activities as well as the big launch! In fact, some of the burgers offered at Elevation Burger will be even be prepared by AUM students for AUM students.

Elevation Burger will not only be the place to satisfy your growling stomach, but it will be the place where you can learn about the food industry. While AUM Students were working during their summer program they found out that many engineering and marketing strategies they studied at university were readily applied at Elevation Burger. For example, Mazen, an Industrial Engineering major, was surprised that the LEAN MANFUCTURING SYSTEM, an operational philosophy promoting low cost, zero waste and low energy consumption, is applied at Elevation Burger. The students learned to minimize waste, be precise with ingredients and significantly manage their time as they work in various operational roles at each store from the cash counter to the grill all the way to head office. The collaboration between students and Elevation Burger, has been so successful, the latter is considering launching a Student Internship Program for AUM students to learn the insides and outs of the resultant business, while they pursue their education. Elevation Burger will even act as a reference, using its premises as a business case or an engineering model, thus presenting itself of a real life example for what students learn in the class room. In collaboration with AUM’s capable educational staff and administration, Elevation Burger aims provide AUM students with not just an elevated burger, but with critical knowledge about sustainability, customer loyalty, and how to build and grow an Eco-friendly business. All these elements are successfully accomplished at Elevation Burger and it is time to pass them on to the students!

Any restaurant can make burgers, but only Elevation Burger supplies delicious and healthy burgers that are rich with flavor and still light and easily digested. Any brand can approach students, but only Elevation Burger would provide all a comprehensive approach on toelevate their health, lifestyle, learning and work experience. Any food concept can launch its restaurant on campus, but only Elevation Burger lets the students be part of key business decisions and activities influencing customers. Everything is different at Elevation Burger. It’s time to elevate the students and faculty’s experience with their special launch at AUM Campus. Fall 2014 is going to be great!

RESTAURANT

For AUM students, by AUM Students,

Training at Elevation Burger, gave me with the opportunity to use my free-time efficiently and gain great experience. Working on different stations at the cashier, the grill and the milkshake stand, I learned the importance of food hygiene, being precise with ingredients and how to interact with customers properly. It definitely brought me closer to Elevation Burger.

When I started working at Elevation Burger, I felt I became part of it. They educated us on the different operations at the store and the head office. They also taught us how to be efficient while we work and trained us on a specific cleaning process. It is such a great educational experience because everything I learned I applied in my personal life, which made studying and organizing my time much easier.

My parents were supportive of me working at Elevation Burger. They trust that I am an adult and I can manage my time. As a Kuwaiti woman, it somewhat appalls the elder generation that I am working at the cashier or preparing milkshakes. The staff are very friendly and Elevation Burger brought me closer to more AUM students, and I look forward to socialize with them during my free time.

Several customers were surprised that Kuwaiti students were working at the cashier or preparing their burgers. I am proud to break the social concept that Kuwaitis do not work. I am glad that I can encourage others to follow in my footstep and have a fruitful learning experience similar to the one I had at Elevation Burger.

I used to be an impatient person, however, my experience with Elevation Burger taught me how to approach clients and solve their problems effectively in a calm manner. Elevation Burger taught us the importance of creating brand loyalty and interacting with our clients. We approach their needs and listen to their opinions with care.

How did you develop your talent? I have been painting and drawing for a long time. After that I started developing my artistic abilities digitally by learning Photoshop in High School. Thanks to my parents, I also took several summer classes for further development. After that, I decided to pursue a major in Graphic Design. Believe it or not, having an art major can build and ruin you simultaneously, however that outcomes were great!

Who was your main supporter? My parents all the way, all the time, they help me develop my talent, pursue it, keep painting and push me to sell. They are 1000% supportive. I also have a few friends and family members or acquaintances who keep supporting me over and over again which is the greatest feeling and support ever. All who supported me, I feel grateful for them.

What were the main difficulties you faced as a painter? Most of the obstacles I encountered evolve around my confidence, or the confusion that I might have lost my talent or touch. Sometimes I would be scared to take risks or I would be afraid that I might not be good at something, which I think is natural. However, my parents have taught me to not let outer obstacles control me or get in my way.

How are you planning on developing your talent in the future? In the future, I am planning on hosting my exhibition to showcase all my art work. My long term goal is to have my own store and sell all my paintings for those who appreciate and love art.

What advice would you give STUDENTALK readers? Always be nice. Try to understand other people. It is not healthy steal other people’s work without giving them credit. Be your own person. Let other people be.

STUDENTALK Magazine would like to extend its warm congratulations to Anwar for winning the STUDENTALK Talent Competition for the July/August Issue. She posted her outstanding paintings on www.studentalk-online.com which brought her a massive number of votes. MILLY’S RUNWAY LOOKS TO YOUR UNIVERSITYLooking fashionable on your campus will provide you with the ultimate confidence boost. From New York to Kuwait, Milly brings you the ultimate look for university from their Fall Collection 2014 - 2015.

Look 1 If you are feeling cold, never add too many layers of clothing to feel warm. These layers will not aid in exposing your feminine figure but will also surely be uncomfortable. Milly’s Fur Knit Jumper, featuring its thick material and fur in the front; you will feel warm and look good. Add a belt in order to accentuate you waist. The Layered Satin Skirt will definitely make the look more feminine. Don’t forget to wear skin color stockings for extra warmth, and walk like you own the university.

Look 2If you are not comfortable wearing a jumper, it’s alright! Milly offers you the Mongolian Lamb Fur Vest which will work wonders for you. When in chilly weather, you have to add the Chunky Knit Pullover. The best aspect about these items is that you can wear them together or separately which puts them under the category of “Must-Have.” Stop wearing black bags in the winter! Piper Patent Medium Tote Bag is beautiful and will go with most of your outfits. And guess what? You can carry your personal and school items in it!

Look 3When I first saw this dress, I thought it was a one-piece long dress. The surprise is that it is a Flare Dress with the Bell Skirt layered with the Ottoman Fit. An outstanding way to style isn’t it?

Look 5You have a presentation and the professor asks you to look formal (especially for those majoring in Business), do not worry Milly got this one covered. The high-waist Paperbag Trousers with the Cheetah Jacquard Pullover and the Beaded Bolero will provide you with the fashionable and cool business look. Add a statement necklace and you’ll like Sandra Bullock from the movie Proposal.

For 180 years, the artisans of the Grande Maison have taken special interest in the beauty of art and the techniques that they used to produce beautiful hand crafts. They’ve mastered the art of enameling and engraving watches with arts and gems. That’s what made them so unique and beautiful.

Enamel is one of the greatest ancestral arts that goes back to thousands of years ago. The procedures taken into creating these arts are very longsome and require so much patience and effort from the artisans. In 1890, they made a pocket watch “LeCoultre Calibre 19/20RMS” that portrayed the Maharaja of Porbander with its yellow gold case artfully engraved with extreme detail.

In 1900 The Lépine-type pendant watch was enameled. It was a yellow gold jewelry watch that features a ribbon-shaped mobile brooch graced with a chased décor appearing beneath the translucent enamel. The talent of gem-setting and enameling gave the watch a feminine look with it patterns and finely set rose-cut diamonds. And last but not least it captures a beautiful painted portrait. Unfortunately enameling is no longer officially taught in art schools. However, a group of artisans still practice it today. They’ve been practicing the master techniques of the old artisans and they are able to produce beautiful handcrafted watches. The 2013 Master Grand Tourbillon Enamel, a masterpiece in High JewelleryCollection. It features a sapphire crystal enhanced by a miniature painting applied using an innovative technique. It captures a landscape of multicolor and shades of blue and glittering moon made of silver foil. They are currently working on the new 2014 model, the Master Grande Tradition à Quantième. The enameller will decorate the white gold rings, one embellishing the dial and another one for the case on the back of the watch. First finely carved by hand, then covered with blue transparent enamel. Master enameller Miklos Merczel 2 and his team begin by applying the enamel on the surface of the piece using a very small paintbrush. Afterwards the piece is repeatedly fired in a kiln until it acquires the desired blue hue. The piece is then delicately polished with diamond powder. I’m sure you can’t wait to wear your own enamel watch and embrace arts that modern artisans took so much time and effort to recreate!

AMERICAN EAGLE OUTFITTERSAmerican Eagle Outfitters has announced the launch of its latest Back to School and Fall collection. As America’s Favorite Jeans Brand, the new collection stays grounded in jeans, with tops that are perfect for layering and give every wardrobe an updated on-trend look. New staples have been introduced to the collection, inspired by the street style.

For men, Autumn 2014 is about the wardrobe of the modern mod,

mixing Parisian cool with the attitude of London and the sleekness of New

York. The pieces are worn with a rebellious attitude, with updated

biker and wool city coats. The collection will be sold worldwide and

online from September.

“This look is straight from the city - an urban silhouette where the key

details are in the pieces themselves. The zips of the biker jacket, the

cut of the city coat, the stitching of the leather trousers all define the

season,” says Andreas Löwenstam, H&M’s head menswear designer.

Leather adds rock’n’roll spirit, from a black leather biker to leather trousers, while classics have new youthful energy, especially the check flannel shirt worn untucked.

The three-button blazer with skinny lapels works everywhere, from day to night.

Staples are given a fresh update, such as the elongated bomber that extends to mid-thigh. Padded outdoor pieces add a sense of urban protection, while zips add sharp detail.

Crewneck sweaters in mohair blends add a contrasting texture, while tailored track pants are the trouser choice.

LIFESTYLE GROOMING FOR HIM

MEN’S SKIN CARE

Worldwide, women are known to be the spenders when it comes to grooming and skincare. However, that does not mean that men don’t need to take care of their skin as well! There are products especially made for men in order for them to take care of their skin and maintain their young looks!

It is important for men to use a gentle liquid cleanser. Unlike women, men are advised to use a cleanser that’s not a scrub because it causes irritation and inflammation, which men already suffer from due to shaving! It is also advised to use products that contain beta hydroxyl acid (BHA). It removes pore-clogging and allows every man to maintain their young look while soothing the skin from rashes and redness. Olay cream is highly recommended, as it is contains hydroxyl acid while will allow you to stay young! This product contains antioxidants and moisturizes your skin. Sunscreen should also be used on a daily basis, not only by the beach. Sunscreens with SPF 20 or greater are suitable. This is not mandatory if you don’t live in a sunny place! But our lovely country is sunny all the time! Don’t leave your homes without sunscreen! You also need to protect your skin at night, so always moisturize your skin to avoid dryness.

For acne problems, any product containing benzoyl peroxide is helpful and beneficial for irritated skin. Olay also offers you great creams for irritated skin, as well as Neutrogena, which are well recommended too. On the other hand, the things that cause irritation are chemicals in products such as alcohol, menthol or a lot of fragrance. So, if you have sensitive skin, try to avoid products that contain these chemicals to avoid irritation.

FRAGRANCEInspired by the natural impulse of water and the authenticity of Salvatore Ferragamo’s style, Acqua Essenziale Blu, explores new sensorial dimensions. The spicy vibrations of Green Cardamom embrace the energy of grapefruit together with the freshness of Bergamot to create intense and delicate top notes. In the heart notes, a surprising twist of a cutting-edge molecule, the Cascalone, joins the boisé perfume of the Cedarwood Atlas and the smoky leather notes of Cypriol, furtherly enhanced by a powerful scent of Lavander. The dry down note is a distinctivly intense essence thanks to the sensual scent of Benzoin and warm notes of Ambrox.

PACO RABANNEBLACKXSPOTION

For Him, Black XS Potion distils a woody aromatic elixir with a devilish charm. Juniper berries add a spicy touch to the top notes, while absinth bewitches the senses with its burning vapours. The spell works its magic. Cashmeran wood, with a torrid virility, combines its powers with those of cistus absolute to entice desire. A few drops of rhum, with intoxicating, syrupy and woody aromas, enrich the essence with hushed final notes.

KUWAIT RIDING CENTER Long before horses were used for travelling, they were used for simply riding. Horse riding is also use in a variety of activities such as the rodeo, polo, showjumping, racing and the Olympics. Back in the day and currently , horses also symbolize respect and wealth. Rich and royal families used to ride horses as a hobby, as well as for transportation. Horse riding is not only known in the West, but in the Middle East too. During more difficult times in history, horses were also used in wars and trade, as most Arabs were nomads due to weather conditions and availability of resources. Having horses and catering for their needs was essential as they were a part of people’s daily lives.

Today, due to the industrialization of the world and technology, horse riding is viewed mostly as a hobby and a sport rather than transportation. That is the case in Kuwait, as well. Kuwait Riding Center also known as KRC was established in 1996, starting off as a small club and turning into a club with over 500 riders and 120 horses.

Riders in Kuwait have the opportunity to start learning and practicing horse back riding at a very young age, while having the opportunity to exceed and participate in national and international competitions such as showjumping and racing. KRC also sponsors their racing teams during competitions, as well as their showjumping team, which competes, all around the Gulf and in Europe.

KRC has ponies and horses to fit all ages that are interested in becoming a serious and committed equestrian. You can also shop for your formal equestrian outfit at the shop available at the center. It offers a variety of options for clothing as well as gifts and horse treats. Family and friends who wish to watch their children and friends practicing are more than welcome at the center, where there is a coffee shop and snack shop to accommodate viewers and visitors.

KRC has been a home to many Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti locals for over 10 years, as our young riders have entered international competitions and competed with riders from all around the world. Kuwait Riding Center encourages and pushes young talents in order to inspire them to use their full potential and talent. There are different instructors and schedules available to suit everyone’s schedules and lifestyles. It is a great opportunity for those who are interested to seek their talents and participate in Kuwait’s riding center.

To become a member at KRC, visit their official website www.kuwaitrc.com or contact them at 965 24751551 / 2 / 3. What are you waiting for? It is great opportunity to learn a new sport as well as be fit!

30TH ANNIVERSARY BMW M5 ARRIVES IN THE MIDDLE EAST30 cars of the most powerful BMW M5 allocated for Middle East market

To mark the 30-year anniversary of the BMW M5 – the founding member of the high-performance business sedan segment – BMW has come up with its most powerful variant yet; the “30 Years of the M5”. Limited to a production of 300 cars globally, 30 of these high performance vehicles have been allocated for discerning customers in the Middle East.

Extensive package of measures to further increase performance Under the bonnet of the BMW M5 “30 Years M5” is a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology with output of 441 kW/600 hp exceeds that of the standard model by 29 kW/40 hp. This power boost has been achieved through carefully calculated tweaks to the engine management and an increase in charge pressure. The foundation for these upgrades was provided by the Competition Package that comprises modifications including a revised chassis set-up with firmer spring/damper tuning and a 10-millimetre drop in ride height. Added to which, the Active M Differential on the final drive gains its own control unit to

further improve traction. And the M Dynamic Mode of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is focused even more keenly on delivering sporty handling. The dynamic potency generated by these performance-enhancing measures make the special edition model reach 0-100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

BMW M5 “30 Years M5” catches the eye and cements itself in the memory. In keeping with the anniversary celebrations which have inspired its creation, the special model has been given the BMW Individual treatment. As a result, it cuts an even more dynamic, head-turning figure than its standard-specification siblings especially with the use of the striking BMW Individual paint shade Frozen Dark Silver metallic. This softly shimmering matt finish accentuates the elegantly muscular forms of the BMW M5 in particularly impressive fashion. The kidney grille surround, gills with “30 Years M5” badge on the front wing, door handle inserts and twin exhaust tailpipes all come in black chrome, adding subtle yet effective accents to the car’s appearance. The same is true of the 20-inch bi-colour M light-alloy wheels with jet black trims.

In The Memory of the Legendary Comedian ROBIN WILLIAMSMrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, Aladdin, Night at the Museum, and Happy Feet are classics that revived our childhood. These are the movies that added a smile to our faces, joy to our surroundings and experience to our lives. However, as each of these movies had an end, we too had to say goodbye to the comedian legend, Robin Mclaurin Williams.

The tragic death happened on August 11th at his home in Northern California, the authorities confirmed that he committed suicide. Susan Schneide, William’s wife, stated that he has been struggling with depression, anxiety and the Parkinson’s diagnosis.

What people do not know about the Parkinson’s is that it is a degenerative nervous system disorder in which brain cells that produce an important chemical called dopamine slowly die off over time and abnormal deposits of protein spread across the brain. The onset is usually after the age of 50 and common symptoms include shaking, trembling, and trouble walking.

Later, the disease begins to affect cognitive and behavioral functioning and can lead to dementia. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline stated that a day after William’s death, they received 7,375 calls, which was the highest number of phone calls the organization has ever received. Indeed, his fans were appalled!

Through several interviews, Williams described himself as a quiet child whose first imitation was of his grandmother to his mother. He did not overcome his shyness until he became involved with his high school drama department. After rising to fame as Mork in the TV series Mork & Mindy, Williams went on to establish a career in both stand-up comedy and feature film acting.

His outstanding talent allowed him to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Good Will Hunting. He received two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and five Grammy Awards.

Just like his movies, there is a lesson to be learned from his life situation. Appeasing people and establishing a strong career path is imperative to our lives. However, neglecting our health and physical problems will lead to drastic situations. We offer our condolences to his families, friends and fans. We will miss you Mrs. Doubtfire.
