Travelers reported on grass verge adjacent to B1113Reports have been received of travellers illegally encamped on the grass verge adjacent to the B1113 at Badley between Needham Market and Stowmarket, near to Roots and Shoots garden centre. Mike was planning to attend a case conference called by Mid Suffolk at Eye Police Station concerning this and a similar encampment at Palgrave, near diss. However, it appears that the travellers have currently vacated the Badley site, so the case conference on this site will be suspended and the site will be monitored.

Stowmarket area action plan – Sustainabilty appraisal reportConsultation on the revised Sustainability Appraisal Report supporting the updated Stowmarket Area Action Plan has commenced and will run until 22nd June 2011.The purpose of the Sustainability Appraisal process is to appraise the social, environmental and economic effects of the updated Action Plan. In doing so it will help to ensure that decisions are made that contribute to achieving sustainable development and help demonstrate that the Plan is the most appropriate. A link can be found on the MSdC website under the consultations heading on www.midsuffolk.gov.uk and comments can be emailed to [email protected]. The deadline for comments is 5.00pm on 22nd June 2011.

Mid Suffolk / Babergh proposed mergerFurther to my previous report to the Town Council and the response that has been circulated to Councillors from Paul Banjo, Joint Programme Manager, MSdC, in reply to the question raised at the last Town Council meeting concerning the threshold for any required response level of the local poll. As Paul Banjo has advised, there is no Boundary Commission set threshold, however if the response rate was extremely low then it might be questionable as to whether the poll was reasonably representative. Mid Suffolk has provided the following response statistics up to yesterday, 31st May 2011, being combined figures, Mid Suffolk and Babergh: Total votes to date: 54,869. Total electorate: 145,200. ‘Turnout’ to date: 37.8%There is no information currently available as to the trend of the result of the poll. The result will be known on Tuesday 7th June 2011, following the close of the poll at Noon, Monday 6th June 2011.For those who may have not yet voted, as an alternative to the postal ballot papers distributed, you may vote online at www.votebyinternet.com/BMS11, or by Freephone 0800 197 4617.Mike Norris & Wendy Marchant, Mid Suffolk district Councillors,Joint Ward Members Needham Market & Badley

A routine eye examination can reveal more than just what you can see. Eyesight is such an important sense for us all; just imagine what life would be like without it. Everybody can, and should take steps to have their eyes checked regularly, usually about every two years.

An eye examination not only assesses how well you can see and whether improvements could be made with spectacles, contact lenses or even eye exercises, it also reveals how healthy your eyes are, as well as giving information about your general health. When an optometrist looks into your eyes they will be able to see the blood vessels at the back of the eyes and changes to these may reflect changes elsewhere in the body, such as with diabetes or blood pressure. Early detection of such problems not only preserves your eyesight but can help improve your quality of life. Other tests can include measurements of eye pressure, how well the eyes work together, as well as separately, and assessment of the peripheral vision.

An eye test is certainly one that you can’t fail, so if you haven’t had your eyes examined recently perhaps now

is a good time to look into getting them checked over. If you wish to find out more or book an appointment please telephone us at F. G. Brown Opticians on 01449 612812.

Stowmarket High School student, Harry Hogg, has picked up top prize in a prestigious national journalism competition for young people.

Harry, who is Year 9 at the school, wrote a news report about a mock criminal trial competition that fellow students had taken part in.

A team of budding lawyers, magistrates, witnesses and police officers in Year 9 competed against various schools in the Cambridgeshire region by staging the prosecution and defence of a criminal trial in the Magistrates’ Court.

Harry’s report of that case, written in the style of a true Court Reporter, was judged best by leading reporter Tom Whitehead of the daily Telegraph from entries across

the country.

Harry will attend Nottingham Magistrates’ Court in June with his family to receive a shield, certificate and book token prize.

Jenny Turner, teacher at Stowmarket High who co-ordinated the team’s preparation for the competition, said: “It is a very special honour to know that Harry’s work was the best: it reflected all the great efforts that each team member contributed to the competition. We are very proud of his achievement.”

Claire Ferguson, Assistant Head teacher

The aim of this group is the regeneration of the river that runs through Stowmarket on its way to join the Orwell River in Ipswich. Our area of operation is from the Pickerel Bridge to the edge of Town. Our monthly meetings try to keep the river clear of debris and the banks clear of litter. We have an on-going programme of work and will be, over the next 2 months, hoping to clear the weed ‘Himalayan Balsam’ which is infesting the Town end of the banks, it has to be pulled up before it flowers in August to prevent its seeds spreading to new areas next year.

We are grateful to the small band of regulars and the new helpers who have increased the effectiveness of the

clear up days. Of course we must not forget the support from the girls and boys and leaders and supporters of the Scout Groups from Combs Ford who help us and have a good time in the process. Water, mud and laughter are a great combination whilst helping the environment at the same time.

May the 14th marked our first River walk starting in the Town with a look at the Riverside development Pickerel Court, where regeneration of banks and paths have made a very nice area. It is hoped that all other projects on the Riverside will be as well designed. From here we began the estimated 5 mile walk to Needham Market along the old tow path. We were given an insight into the local history of the rivers industrial and agricultural heritage by local experts John Pattle and Barry Salmon. I think we were all amazed at the change in the rivers scenery once we reached Muntons, they have done so much to keep the riverside pleasant whilst planting and general good housekeeping, here begins the rural river which meanders to Needham Market through some lovely countryside. We reached our destination in 2 and a half hours and enjoyed the refreshments at The Rampant Horse Inn. A very enjoyable day. Next walk will begin in Needham Market and end at Claydon, the final walk will be Claydon to Ipswich next spring. Look out for details!

June - July Local News

The Safer neighbourhoods Team (SNT) here at Stowmarket has been focussing on crime prevention and reducing ASB over recent months.

At present there are two priorities concerning Anti-social behaviour (ASB). One at the old ALdI car park and littering at the Recreation ground.

Particularly relevant for Stowmarket Business in the Bury Street area, patrols have increased. Couple this with increased public usage of the site; reports of ASB have appeared to reduce.

With a new restaurant opening soon it would be nice to see this car park more widely used and regain a reputation as a safer car park in Stowmarket. CCTv covers this site and has been proactive in address poor behaviour.

For the longer term this increased usage should make the site less attractive for gatherings and to be used as a short cut. However patrols will continue and where offences are disclosed the police will continue to deliver a robust approach. There have been several seizures of

vehicles, in particular motorcycles costing the individual £150 from the outset and a storage fee payable to the recovery agent.

On the crime prevention front we have been working very closely with Stowmarket stores in particular those associated to the Shop watch.

Members of the safer neighbourhoods team will be holding a morning’s session on crime prevention, discussing steps stores can take to prevent loss.

Any stores wishing to attend, who have not already expressed an interest can contact Pc 423 Barry Abbott at Stowmarket police station on 01473 613500 or email [email protected] for more information. Places are limited.

Stowmarket Town council recently held a well attended public meeting for the recreation ground priority (Thursday 19th May) at the middle school Stowmarket. Members of the police were invited and did attend to answer questions and listen to concerns. In all a very positive meeting

and this was just one step to address concerns previously made creating this area of Stowmarket as local priority.

Patrols have increased here as well and we have been working closely with Asda security team to prevent purchasing of alcohol by adults but then supplying onward to youths.

Earlier in May a fixed penalty fine of £80 was given to an adult for underage supply thanks to the vigilance of ASdA security staff.

Over the recent bank holiday weekend working with ASdA and town CCTv two individuals received £80 fines for alcohol related crimes.

ASB legislation was effectively used to identify and remove several potential troublemakers for a 48 hour period.

When issues occur associated with the recreation ground the police and council will be looking to make those responsible put right what they have done, if that be through arrest, fines, litter collections and so on.

In fact this weekend saw just that with two individuals set to litter pick on the Recreation ground and clean police vehicles following disorderly behaviour.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping Stowmarket the safe place it is to live and work.

The Flyer distribution team were treated to an entertaining morning of golf recently as part of a team-building exercise. despite Flyer Press and Flyer Magazines being produced from Felixstowe for some 14 years, many still don’t realise that the Flyer distribution team are a group of full time employees who deliver, not only the Flyer magazines across the county of Suffolk, but also the many leaflets and corporate newsletters Flyer Press are commissioned to produce by local businesses and organisations.

Adrian Bradshaw Flyer Press director explains ‘We feel it’s vital for customers to have faith that their leaflets and promotional material are being delivered professionally and on time. With that in mind we maintain a strong team of dedicated delivery personnel who work with us on a permanent basis to achieve a fast, efficient delivery service whether it’s for our magazines or for the many

different kinds of leaflets we print and deliver each week.’

The Flyer Golf Morning took place on Good Friday at the Gulpher Road driving Range with the whole distribution team enjoying a fun morning’s golf followed by lunch at Sea Front Fish and Pie on Bent Hill.

The morning was arranged by Flyer Press to recognise the extra efforts put in by all the Flyer distribution team members during recent months when demand has been at a particularly high level. Together the team, who regularly work six days a week, deliver over 300,000 items of printed material each and every month. ‘We are very proud of our distribution Team and without them we couldn’t provide such a professional delivery service to the businesses of Suffolk and beyond.’ Adrian concluded. For more information about having leaflets delivered you can contact Adrian Bradshaw on 01394 211 461.

MENDLESHAMMendlesham was given the rights of a market town in 1281, recorded in the domesday Book as Melnessam and believed to be the seat of East Anglian kings. Today Mendlesham has two main streets running parallel dating back to the mid-Saxon times. In Old Market Street the preaching Stone can be seen, said to be used by itinerant preachers.

The beautiful Church of St Mary lies at the eastern end of the main streets on a site of an earlier Saxon Church. Beside the alter are two Mendlesham chairs made by daniel day who had a workshop in Front Street in the 18th centuty. These uniquely styled chairs

were traditionally made of yew or fruitwood, the seat being of elm.

Perhaps the most interesting feature within the church is the wonderful collection of armour stored since 1593 in the priests chamber over the north porch, thought to have been the accommodation of the resident chaplain. viewing is by appointment, the chamber being approached by a narrow winding flight of stairs.

The aprish of Mendlesham Green is two miles south of the main village. In earlier times the Green had its own shop, blacksmith, wheelwright and public house. Mendlesham had the second station on the Mid Suffolk Light Railway which ran from 1904 to 1952.

Two public houses remain in The Street from an earlier six, The kings Head and The Fleece. There once was a fire station opposite The Fleece.

Major employers are based at the industrial estate on Mendlesham Airfield which is two miles from the village centre, near the A140.

The local landmark, visible for many miles is the 1000ft high mast.

This was formerly used for vHF405 line transmissions of Anglia Television.

Mendlesham is well known for its well attended annual Street Fayre, held every May day Bank Holiday.

Community spirit prevails within the village, I have personally witnessed a taste of that good spirit when I was once a member of the friendly bowls club.

Readers’ LettersSomeone is going to get hurt!INow that the pedestrian zone in the town centre is a car park, I predict that it is only a matter of time before someone is badly injured.

A mother with a buggy and small child had a car pull up in front of them as they came round from the Buttermarket, i myself came out of the bank to have a car drive across in front of me.

There is often as many as six vehicles parked inside the bollards and another three or four outside, in a town centre that used to be no parking.

If the intention of the council is to encourage more people into the town, then making the pavements safe to walk on would be a start.

I have spoken to two town councillors in the town, and Not Interested would sum up the response.

Agree partly with Mr Bull regarding lights at bridge junction, The lights as you turn left onto it stay red even when no traffic is coming from the right, also from some sized cars you cannot see the amber or green lights as you go along Gipping way because the louvres on them.

P.Rodda

‘Horoscopes’ Let us consider the factsThe moon is some quarter of a million miles away and moves around the earth every month or so. It therefore passes across the majesty of thestars continuously, the latter being at cosmic distances - often millions of light years away. For ease of identification astronomers (scientists that study the universe) group the brighter stars into constellations. In any constellation the individual stars are nowhere near each other! It is this normal daily crossing of the moon in front of the enormously distant stars that astrologers falsely claim can affect us. The opening sentence of the ‘horoscope’ for ‘Aries’ is “A new moon in Taurus ... is a great time to buy that big ticket item”. What utter and complete nonsense! How in the name of the universe can a giant sphere of rock, stone, dust and ice, at one-quarter million miles distance, passing in front of an arbitrarily named group of bright stars having a typical distance (in the case of Aldebaran, its brightest star) of 65 light years, have any effect whatsoever on someone’s finances?

Does the astrologer have any idea of the nature of what is actually happening? To associate this non event with money and then tell someone to buy expensive items and change bank at this time is surely the most appalling financial advice ever conceived?

Astrologers make similar nonsensical statements about the planets, falsely attributing properties that have no reality. Has this astrologer ever seen the planets through a powerful telescope and perhaps watched one ‘cross’ a constellation? Probably not: never let the facts get in the way of a saleable spiel of rubbish. If astrologers and any of their ollowers would attend a class or two in elementary astronomy, they would quickly understand how

badly they have been misled.

The universe is a fantastic place and a pair of binoculars or telescope can truly reveal the facts. That is more than anyone will ever get from reading an astrology column. Enjoy the true sky - not the falsehoods of the astrologers!

Navigation Approach Tariffic LightsAfter reading James Bull`s letter in the May-June edition about the traffic lights at Navigation Approach I thought that I too would like to comment. Mr Bull is absolutely right about these lights, they are more of a hindrance than help to traffic flow. Why a roundabout was`nt deemed good enough at that junction goodness knows.

As Mr Bull pointed out if you are travelling towards Needham Market there can be congestion even if the lights are green because the filter lane to Cedar`s Park is far too short and too sharp a pull in. I dare say that there will be roadworks there before long to alter the junction.

Julian & Claire Allen

Combs Ford Action PlanI totally agree with Raquel White’s letter from the May-June issue.

We live on Needham Road and have done for the last 5 years. We have seen absolutely no action in all of those years to improve road safety or even to replace the existing damaged safety barrier.

I have two young children who attend Combs Ford primary school and therefore have to regularly cross the road with my wife at peak times. My children are not the only ones. It is major route to school and unfortunately an increasingly busy traffic route. It is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt or worse. How cam this road be left with not a single traffic calming measure or crossing point? Somehow I can’t believe that if this problem existed in Bury or Ipswich it wouldn’t be addressed.

Regarding the rubbish on Pykes meadow and along the river, again I totally agree. More pride needs to be taken in this whole area. The unfinished and damaged boardwalk is a case in point. Again this has remained unfinished for at least the last 5 years. What is going on? What is the town council or our local MP’s doing about these issues? I think the community has a right to know.
