fouling in the Town Centre recently and we want to put a stopto it. It is especially unpleasant for anyone who treads in dogsmuck, particularly if they traipse it home. It can even pose ahealth hazard - particularly for inquisitive small children whodon't know any better! Dog owners should be aware thatdog fouling is an expensive bookable offence which carries afine of up to £1000. Stowmarket Town Council has recentlyerected several more dog bins around the town so there isno excuse to leave any poo on pavements. Please do not embarrass your pooch by leaving theirdeposits on display - instead, have a bit of pride in the townthat you live in and pick it up and put it in the nearest bin ortake it home please.

VAT Online RequirementsMost small businesses will be aware that online filing of VATreturns becomes mandatory from April 2010. Businesses withan annual turnover of £100,000 or more will be required to fileand pay VAT by electronic methods from April, as will businesses that register for VAT from 1 April 2010, irrespectiveof size. This applies to VAT returns that cover accounting periods starting on or after 1 April 2010.As at 31 December 2009 any business with an annualturnover of £100,000 or more will be included in the requirement to file online. This applies whether or not turnoversubsequently falls below that level. Registered traders whomeet this criteria will receive letters from HM Revenue andCustoms (HMRC) explaining how the on-line system works.HMRC have stated that their intention is for all VAT returns tobe filed on-line by 2012, so all businesses will need to makethe necessary preparations to file on-line.

PenaltiesPenalties will be levied on businesses failing to file on-line andthese will apply to returns for periods ending on or after 31March 2011, therefore allowing a period of one year to adjustbefore the financial penalties are imposed. The penaltiesincrease according to the VAT exclusive turnover of the busi-ness failing to make the return by the required method. Thepenalties for small businesses are as follows: Turnover £100,000 and under - £100 Turnover £100,001 to £5,600,000 - £200 .

Completing the returnFiling on-line may lead to the temptation to reduce yourpaper records but it is still important to keep a trail whetherpaper or digital of your completed returns and workings.Once the return has been submitted you will receive an on-screen unique submission receipt reference number whichyou should save or print in case of subsequent queries.Leading software suppliers include on-line filing of VAT within itsapplications making the process even simpler and this mayencourage you to start using accounting software rather thanmaintaining manual records.

Help is at handTo assist anyone unsure of how to register, there is a handybeginners guide to assist you when registering for on-line filingwhich can be found on the HMRC website www.hmrc.gov.ukor we can mail the guide in pdf format if you contact us at [email protected]. If you do have any problems regarding VAT on-line or anyother accounting issues please contact us on 01449 798285.

PMR-GCA Support East AngliaPolymyalgia Rheumatica & Giant Cell Arteritis

Have you heard of Polymyalgia Rheumatica or the connected condition Giant Cell Arteritis? Not many peoplehave - unless they are suffering from them! However, thedoctors say that PMR is quite a common occurrenceamongst the elderly, although GCA is rarer.

In some people PMR comes on suddenly, with debilitatingpain across the shoulders and lower back. Other peopleexperience a more gradual onset which seems harder todiagnose, but which is just as painful and restricting. GCA is amore serious illness, as if undiagnosed and untreated it canlead to serious visual loss or even blindness. GCA can be asa result of PMR, or a condition in its own right.

With PMR, symptoms of stiffness are often worse in the mornings, with people experiencing improved mobility andless pain in the afternoon. It can be diagnosed after a bloodtest, and appropriately adjusted steroid treatment can offerspeedy and dramatic relief. In GCA, the symptoms are theonset of severe or unusual headaches, with stiffness of thejaw and swollen temples, and medical help should besought urgently, as a high dose of steroids is necessary tobring the inflammation down and safeguard vision.

Gradually patients feel less debilitated and although relapsesoccur, life can adjust more or less to normal. the conditionsusually last for two or three years.

We have a very thriving PMR-GCA Support Group which hasbeen established now for six years, based in NeedhamMarket. We run a telephone help line, and send out information and newsletters to our many contacts. We holdtwice yearly meetings in Needham Market CommunityCentre, and people come from all over Suffolk and beyond. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 21st April at 10-30am,and it offers the opportunity for people with either PMR orGCA to meet and compare notes. There is a short AGM, followed by a talk on Relaxation Techniques by HazelBradshaw. Please phone Jennifer on 01449 720 545, or Johnon 01449 672 592 or email [email protected] further details or help.

The Regal Theatre'sGala Opening Celebration

Here, at the Stowmarket Flyer, we are always eager to attend local events so thatwe can give our readers a firsthand report. So, when we were kindly invited to thereopening of the Regal Theatre, we were there as soon as you could say 'pop-corn'.

Our host for the evening was Richard Whymark. Richard's wit and charm startedour night off with a smile and a laugh and he didn't disappoint throughout.Richard's comic timing and special guests Derek the Dynamic Duck, and UncleCharlie, had everyone wanting more. The evening's acts kicked off with a greatperformance by the Scouts who sang, danced, and didn't miss a beat, a fantas-tic start to the evening. Next up, a stunning piano recital by Celia Barrow, perform-ing on the piano owned by Stowmarket Town Council, which is kept at the RegalTheatre. Young talent, Jazz Bullen, a 15 year old singer/songwriter from Bury stEdmunds was next, an amazing performance from someone so young. Racheland Chris from Stowmarket Bellycise then showed us how they shake their stuff, with2 very different belly dancing styles incorporating a mix of tribal, hip hop and funkydance moves.

Interval....And then the cake was cut, the Regal was officially open, and what achange it is. The last time I attended a Regal showing was to see a film calledSpace Jam in 1996! The Regal is now a venue to be reckoned with. With the intro-duction of 'Orange Wednesdays', where Orange mobile customers can get 2 tick-ets for the price of 1, no longer do you need to travel 20 miles to the nearest cin-ema to enjoy an evening out.

This thoroughly enjoyable evening then continued with Oskar Foxtrot, again, anoth-er great performance. We were shown an extract from their upcoming productionof 'The wild man of Orford'. Fantastic acting and strong vocals from all involved,we're looking forward to the full production in July. 34 year old Dave Collins fol-lowed, any man from Stowmarket who can get a room full of people clappingalong to his music rates highly in my book. Great lyrics, and a superb voice tomatch. A natural talent.

Coming to the end of the night, and the last 3 acts. Stowmarket Operatic &Dramatic Society (SODS for short!) put on an unbelievably professional perform-ance. Their production of the musical comedy ' Mr Cinders' will be on at the Regalon the 4th- the 8th May, and from the snippet we saw tonight, should not bemissed. Second to last was Brian Mann, who had the audience singing along toall of his numbers including 'Show me the way to amarillo' and hits by the maver-icks. Brian brought us the best in Country music. His show can be seen at theRegal soon, please contact the box office for more details.

Rounding off this fabulous evening of entertainment, was Remember when. A tripdown memory lane, with a selection of songs from the 40's to the 70's. Luckily forthose of you who didn't attend, you will be able to experience the full showing of'Remember when' on the 18th March, as part of their Nationwide Tour.

Quite rightly, Theatre manager David Marsh and the staff at the Regal were com-mended for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We look forward to attending manymore events at this fantastic local venue.
