In August 2008, Colin and Louise Bentley, together with John and Carol Smith were presented with the opportunity of purchasing a property known as “The Mount”, adjacent to their existing premises, Coniston Residential Home, Garfield Road, Felixstowe, since renamed Cotman Lodge.

The location of the site meant that any new development would be fraught with challenges. With the help of Wincer Kievennar, the architects,planning permission was sought and granted to demolish the existing building and construct a brand new, purpose built residential home for the elderly.

Work began in October 2009, but before any building work could commence, the land had to be stabilised. To achieve this, it was necessary to sink 52 piles alongside the site boundary; each pile to a depth of at least 15 metres. A total of 17,500 tonnes of soil was removed from the front of the piles. This amounted to 875 lorry loads! The result of this was a level site and the total removal of the cliff side that the original building stood upon. Overall, a total of 170 piles, each to a depth of 8 - 15 metres were driven into the site. Construction of the building then commenced, using a tower crane with a 35 metre reach, which dominated the Felixstowe skyline for many months.

The result is a stunning, beautifully designed and constructed building, nestling into the cliff overlooking Felixstowe seafront. The owners have put

their 27 years experience in caring for the elderly to good use. The interior combines supremecomfort with state of the art technology and every detail has been most carefully considered. Local contractors and suppliers have been used to ensure high standards throughout. Every resident will have a most tastefully furnished room, en-suite wet room facilities, the latest adjustable pro-file beds complete with custom made mattresses, satellite television, telephone and internet connection. The majority of the rooms have panoramic sea views; some with balconies and some direct access to the large attractive garden area. Other facilities in the building include a library, cinema, hairdressing salon, and the latest barrier laundry systems.Cotman House benefits from the personal involvement of the directors who are supported by the manager and a highly experienced team who already have an excellent reputation in Cotman Lodge. Both the directors and staff are very excited to be part of this unique project.The owners wish to pay tribute to Carters of Ipswich, who have been outstanding in their efforts throughout the project. The finished building is a testament to their craftsmanship and attention to detail. A special thank you is due to the residents of Garfield Road and the surrounding area for their patience and understanding as the construction work progressed.

Welcome to May and the 28th issue of the Flyer in Stowmarket. With Stowmarket and surrounding villages growing month by month, when will it be time to stop the continuing expansion in Mid Suffolk? We seem to keep adding new homes and roads with little regard for connections to and from Stowmarket.I’m sure our local planning authority have their guidelines for applications made to them but it’s hard to see how these are enforced. Please see our readers’ letters for more on this.The team and I at the Stowmarket Flyer would like to sincerely apologise for the grammatical and spelling errors made in the last edition. The errors made were silly and should have been spotted in the proofing process. However, i’m sure my English teacher will be able to tell you all I wasn’t the best in the class, but with the wonders of computers these errors shouldn’t happen.Did you vote? And will you be voting in the future? Some questions you might have been asked recently with the hoards of party political information you’ve received via your TV, email or through your letterbox. NEEdHAM MARkET COUNTRY PRACTICE Wendy has had a reply to her email to the Chief Executive of NHS Suffolk about the difficulty of getting a doctor’s appointment, and the inadequacy of the car park which gets so full cars are forced to park on the narrow busy road outside of the doctors’ Surgery, which isn’t ideal. The concern is, if there is over capacity now, the problem will be even greater when the Unilever site and Chalk Pits Site is developed. (There were problems in Stowmarket with inadequate Surgery facilities when extra houses were built.) NHS Suffolk say they have arranged a meeting with Needham Market Country Practice for Friday 10th June, 2011, when these problems will be discussed. Let us hope that they can be resolved.BUSES FOR NEEdHAM MARkET Mid Suffolk’s Scrutiny invited Suffolk County Council Portfolio Holder for Public Transport, County Councillor Guy MacGregor. to answer questions from bus users about the lack of evening buses, particularly the late night bus – the last bus used to be 23.52 – there are no buses in the evening now. There are trains, but the last train from Ipswich to Needham Market is 22.16. Also the timetables at the bus stops are not upto date (that might have been rectified by the time you read this). If you have any queries about bus or train times you can telephone Travel Line 0871 200 2233. Suffolk Link responsive bus service (01449.616000) only operates Mondays to Saturdays through the day. However Co. Cllr. MacGregor said bus users should buy a car using a credit card.CLOSURE OF HOUSEHOLd WASTE SITES Suffolk County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Household Waste Sites, SCC Co.Cllr. Lisa Chambers also came to Mid Suffolk’s Scrutiny to answer questions about this. Particular concern was expressed about the closure of the Brome Household Waste Site because local people would have to travel miles to the next nearest site. Mid Suffolk’s concern is that it could lead to more fly tipping, whose clearance has to be paid for by the district. However events are moving so quickly this situation may have changed by the time you read this.MONEY BEING SAvEd ALREAdY WITH THE MERGER PROCESSA new internal audit system will provide a net income to MSdC of £12,000 and overall savings across both councils of £30,500 (against 2011.12 budget)The integration of Legal Services with Babergh has resulted in savings of nearly £54,000 in 2010/11. with profits of less than £300,000 will pay corporation tax at 20%

• Capital allowances – the changes to the rates proposed in June 2010 remain unaltered and from April 2012 the Annual Investment Allowance will be reduced to £25,000 and that the rates of writing down allowance on man pool assets will reduce from 20% to 10%.

• Business Rates – small business rate relief scheme has been extended for an additional year to 30 September 2011. The scheme provides eligible small business ratepayers with small business rate relief at 100 per cent on properties up to £6,000 rateable value in 2010, (rather than the previous rate of 50 per cent), and a tapering relief from 100 per cent to 0 per cent for properties up to £12,000 in rateable value.

• Business motoring in privately owned car – the amount an employee can be reimbursed tax free for business journeys has increased from 40p to 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, the rate of 25p per mile for mileage in excess of 10,000 remains the same.

VATThe vAT thresholds for both registering and deregistering have increased from 1 April 2011 to £73,000 and £71,000 respectively.

This concert is part of a weekend of celebrations to mark the 60th

anniversary of the ordination of Revd. Leslie Ivory. It concludes with a special service on Sunday July 3rd at 10-30am. to which all are very welcome.

Stowmarket Art Club are holding their Annual Exhibition a week earlier this year. Normally running for the Bank Holiday week at the end of May, this year it will run from Tuesday 24th May until Saturday 28th May, 10am until 4pm

An exhibition of over 200 paintings by local artists and free admission, this years show looks to be maintaining the very high standards we have come to expect from members. We have also a mock-up of an artist’s studio to give an idea of how the Masters like Constable and Gainsborough might have worked.

On Friday the 27th May we will stay open until 7pm for the launch of the Stowmarket Festival. Please come and give us a look, we are sure you will not be disappointed.

disability charity Optua is looking for people in the Stowmarket area to take part in the weekly ‘Big Splash’ swimming sessions for people with disabilities.

The sessions run every Monday at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre from 3pm to 4pm and are supported by Suffolk County Council’s Activities Unlimited project.

Big Splash sessions give people with disabilities the chance to swim or learn to swim at an accessible swimming pool, supported by staff and volunteers. In 2010/2011 over 6,500 people enjoyed the sessions which run across Suffolk at several locations.

Big Splash sessions are open to anyone with a disability of any age and are also open to anyone recovering from an accident or with a long term health condition. There are staff and volunteers on hand to help and if you need a carer to come too they get to swim for free.

Can you help?In only a matter of weeks the Children from Chernobyl will be with us in Needham Market for their health recuperation visit. This year we have 16 children aged 7 and 8 years old, 4 boys and 12 girls all coming form the village of Cherikov in Belarus.

They will have to leave home at 3 am to make the 5 hour journey to Minsk Airport and will arrive tired but excited in Needham Market on July 10th. The children will be staying with families in the immediate area but also as far away as Norfolk. Monday to Friday they will all meet together at the Needham Market Football Club which is donated to us to use for the duration of the visit. With this as our base we will be taking the children on various outings and organised activities, many of which are sponsored by local businesses and associations. The children will arrive with only the clothes they stand in and we are now urgently collecting new and nearly new clothing for them which they will have great fun choosing for themselves and brothers/

sisters at home when they come to the welcome party which is hosted for them by the Ladies of Needham Market Football Club.

If you have anything at all to donate that will fit children from the ages of 6 to 11 we would be extremely grateful.

donations can be dropped into our Charity Shop in Needham Market (adjacent to the Rampant Horse Public House) in Coddenham Road. Alternatively, please feel free to call me to arrange collection.

Also very welcome would be toys that the children can play with and take home at the end of their visit.

They love all sorts of toys and games but books are regrettably not acceptable as the children cannot read English.

Some of you may be aware that for the second year, kevin Parker is undertaking a bike ride from London to Paris at the end of June to raise funds for this years visit. Last year he did amazingly well raising over five thousand pounds! The bike ride is taking place over only three days, that’s over a hundred miles each day and this year his friend Mark Tennant is joining him. They are currently both training hard although it is not easy to find hill practise in Suffolk!

Stowmarket’s premier family event The Stowmarket Carnival enters its 51st year this year and there is still time for you to get involved. The Carnival will be run over the weekend of the 15th -17th July with a host of attractions and activities to keep everyone happy. The day after The Royal Wedding the ‘Cara-Lea school of dance’ had another royal engagement to make, neraly 60 students from the school performed at ‘The Royal Albert Hall’ London in a show called ‘Stars in the round’, this is a show put together from over 30 dance and performance schools from all over England, Scotland and Wales.

The students were the first ones on in the second half , they performed a 5 minute routine called ‘Be Italian’ from the film ‘Nine’, this involved neraly 30 chairs as well and took a slight ‘Burlesque’ feel to it, originally the routine was performed at the dance schools local Christmas show, and was such a hit we decided to take it to our London performance, the routine has been heavily choreographed by talented senior student Hollie Hubbard 18, who herself has been dancing with the school for over 10 years.

The students who performed ranged from 7 yrs through to 21 years, it was a great experience for all the dancers and the atmosphere in a 360 degree audience of over 5,000 people was out of this world for them, this is the third time the local school have performed at this London venue, although only last summer they performed in ‘disneyland Paris’ this

london venue is always their favorite.

Also the school have had some great competition results so far this year, they have had 3 competitions to date, starting with a local friendly comp in Ipswich with our friends the ‘Lait dance club’ where we managed to win back the shield to hold for a year, then we had two area comps at Helmel Hempstead and Sudbury and had many students now qualified for the national finals day later this year held in London. Well done to all the students for working so hard and getting us off to a great start to the competition season.

The school has several new classes that have just started up in the local areas – We have classes running in Mendlesham, also we have adult dance classes, new ‘Little Starz’ Pre school classes for 3-5 yrs and ‘Little Latino’s’ starting in Haughley in June. Classes are held in Stowmarket, Needham Market, Woolpit, Haughley & Mendlesham, in disco freestyle, street dance, slow lyrical, rock n roll, and latin in line, all teachers I.S.T.d. fully qualified/CRB checked. This popular event takes place this year on Sunday 17th July from 11am – 4pm. Attractions already booked include vintage tractors, a fencing display, miniature ponies and other animals. There will be an “animal petting area” for children as well as face painting and children’s sports. Ice Creams and refreshments will be available all day.

Stowmarket Festival is back and promises to be even bigger and better than before! There’s a wide range of events and activities over a 10-day period from Friday 27th May until 5th June.

So, what’s Stowmarket Festival all about? It’s a great opportunity to bring entertainment to Stowmarket. It provides a festival with the widest possible appeal, therefore there are no real limits to the kind of events that the festival can feature. It’s not just an “arts festival”, it goes far beyond that with the 2011 festival featuring sports and even Roman History!

This year we’ll be holding a big launch party in the Town Centre on Friday 27th May between 4pm and 7pm to kick off the festival in style, with live music from the brilliant Zoom Club, The B Goodes, performances from the Samboomba Samba Band, the 60-strong choir Funky voices and Stowmarket Concert Band, free percussion workshops for anyone wishing to take part, the Premier Sports speed gun test and much more.

Throughout the festival we seek to bring new events and activities to Stowmarket and then to repeat those that have proven popular with the public. The first Stowmarket Blues Festival on Saturday

28th May – named StowBlues. StowBlues will feature various blues acts from around the region and we’re delighted to have secured Mark Flanagan – from Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra – as one of the acts for this year. StowBlues will take place between 2pm and 10pm and will feature a CAMRA supported Real Ale Bar. Entry is free thanks to funding from the Local Strategic Partnership.

Other highlights of the festival include Comedy at The Regal featuring Hal Cruttenden (Jason Manford’s Comedy Rocks), a Roman Camp at Cedars Park, free percussion workshops on various days throughout the week, a skatepark event featuring professional skaters, an African dance Workshop at the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts and a performance from the Canadian Salvation Army Staff Band. There are many more excellent events taking place, details of which can be found in the festival guide that will be circulated to all houses in and around Stowmarket. details can also be found at www.stowmarketfestival.co.uk.

The festival will end with the free music festival StowFest on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June which this year will be held at Chilton Fields. We are grateful for

the support offered by the Rugby Club in hosting StowFest. The Saturday will feature the Main Stage (jointly sponsored by Hudson Signs, PPG and Everyone Active at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre), the Amplitude Stage (featuring young bands from the Amplitude Project) and the RAMP Recordings vinyl only stage playing house, disco, dubstep, funky hip-hop and garage. There will also be free percussion workshops, t-shirt printing and many commercial stalls and attractions. The Sunday will mark a laid back end to Stowmarket Festival with StowFest: The Acoustic Sessions. A number of top acoustic acts from around the region will be showcasing their talents in what will be a lively and thoroughly entertaining afternoon of acoustic music. What did you do during the Royal Wedding?.I was working in Needham Market while the wedding was on. Of course i was recording it at home to watch later.The whole event was a great spectacle and I think it went off without a hitch, although maybe a little too noisy for one of the bridesmaids.

Limitless: Neil Burger

Limitless is one of those films that lives up to the trailer and beyond. With this role Bradley Cooper is

proving his credentials as a leading actor and of course it helps that I don’t think he hit any branches on the ugly tree. Always a plus if you want to be a leading man in Hollywood. He is well supported by Abbie Cornish best know for Candy with the late Heath Ledger and new film Suckerpunch. Also you cannot say anything about this film without mentioning the wonder that is Robert de Niro. Is there any role this man cannot do? Cooper does well to hold his own

against such a Hollywood Legend.Cooper plays writer Eddie Morra who has chronic writers block but a chance meeting with an old friend introduces him to the world of the drug known as NZT. This drug allows him to access the full potential of his mind. Within days of taking NZT he has completed his book, Learns languages overnight and manages to predict the stock market which takes Wall Street by storm.

This rise of fame brings Morra to the attention of Carl van Loon played by de Niro. van loon puts Morra in charge of a massive multi billion dollar merger the largest in commercial history and

it unleashes all kinds of situations for Morra. One namely being the fight for his life! This film deals with drug addiction but deals with it in a way I have not seen before. I personally thought the way it shows that not all drug addicts are bad people is clever.

I must admit I got a little confused halfway through but managed to catch up and this is one of the downfalls of the film. It moves at a very fast pace and can be tricky to keep up with but at the same time I didn’t find it too hard to catch back on to what was happening.

Red Riding Hood: Catherine Hardwicke

Catherine Hardwicke of Twilight Fame presents us with a modern version of the classic fairytale

Red Riding Hood. Amanda Seyfried plays the leading role of Red Riding Hood (I shall from here on in refer to this role as Red) with a supporting cast of near unknowns. The 3 most notable cast members are Gary Oldman playing Father Solomon, the one who claims he can rid the town of the wolf, Billy Burke playing Red’s Father and Julie Christie as her Grandmother. I was really looking forward to this film as I loved Catherine Hardwicke’s work in Twilight and the trailer looked really good and that for me apart from the

twist is when my enjoyment of this film finishes. don’t get me wrong there is nothing majorly wrong with this film but for me it was a regurgitation of Twilight with a few tweaks. This being there are no vampires and the story is set in a medieval looking town rather than an all American sleepy town and again there for me the tweaks end. The script is awful. I sat there at one point thinking to myself this is just word for word Twilight but set so it fits the storyline. The wolves we see are carbon copies of the werewolves we see in twilight and this annoyed me intensely especially after rumours that she didn’t direct the 2nd Twilight movie to avoid being pigeon holed.

The thing I will praise the film for is the

twists!!! You do not expect the twists that come through out this film one of them is totally unexpected and for this I gave the film an extra flyer.

If you want to see a good adaptation of the Red Riding Hood story may I be so bold as to recommend a film called Hard Candy by david Slade (another of the Twilight directors). This is an 18 rated film as the main theme of this film is paedophilia. Patrick Wilson plays Jeff an assumed sexual predator (the Wolf) and Ellen Page plays Hayley a 14 year old (Red Riding Hood) who meet online and the story unfolds from there. This film is an excellent adaption of the classic Red Riding Hood Story which is one of my personal favourite films as well as having one of my favourite modern actresses in.

Bacton was originally based round seven greens; Bacton, Canham, Cow, Earls, Ford, Shop and Tailors.

From 1236 to 1536 Bacton was ruled by the many Bishops of Norwich. From 1501 to 1536 Richard Nykke was Bishop and he built a palace in Bacton (when this was demolished bricks were used to build cottages) and his coat or arms can be seen in the south aisle window of St Mary’s Church. The present manor house was completed about 1732 and bears the Pretyman coat of arms. It is now used as a rest home for the elderly. St Mary’s Church dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and is of

the decorated and perpendicular styles of architecture. Over the chancel arch are remains of the doom painting which is considered an excellent example of medieval art.A tragedy which took place in Bacton was the murder of Maria Steggles, housekeeper to the rector Rev Edward Barker, between the hours of ten and one o’clock on the 8th May 1853 whilst the rector was in Church. A reward of

£205 was offered for any information. William Flack, an 18 year old Bacton boy, was found guilty of the murder and was executed publicly in Ipswich.Up until the middle of the 20th century, there had been little change in Bacton, other than the coming of the railway in the 1850’s. The railway geographically divided the village into two and for 100 years brought alternative employment to the village. Finningham station which was in the Parish of Bacton was closed in 1966. In 1958 one of the more prominent farmers, Mr david Black of Red House Farm, was awarded the OBE for his services to agriculture. Amongst

many other activities, he initiated the formation of the National Farmers Union in Suffolk and became its first Chaimanr in 1919.during the 20th century five of the six public houses have been closed, only The Bull remains.In the centre of the village on Shop Green is a general store and post office. There are a number of listed buildings including the Bacton Manor House. The village football club are known as Bacton United ’89 F.C. and run three teams at their ground Brickwall Meadow. On the outskirts of Bacton is Finbow’s Yard which houses a wide mix of businesses and is well visited by people near and far.John Swincickyi

Sports News May - June

The March meeting was set aside for holiday videos, it was so popular that we could not show them all. There were a variety of films; Mary Smith had an informative film on Centre Parcs. Alan Ames showed a film on how to walk on fire. While the Switzerland film by Colin Wright and Ann Evans was very well received and one comment was that it should be sent to a tourist company. It had variety, stunning lake and mountain views, an interesting trip round a life museum, pictures of the natural fauna and plenty of movement showing scenic railways and ferries. The commentary and music suited the film making it a pleasant experience. In April Jon Nicholls talked about using a green screen and the emphasis was on the fact that plenty of light was required. Brian Palmer sat in front of the screen and we learnt how to put different backgrounds behind Brian. Green screens are used in the film industry to great affect, Harry Potter films being a popular example. It was interesting to see what an amateur filmmaker could produce. The second half of the meeting was all about stop motion. The greatest lesson learnt was that you need a lot of patience. GolfMark Presentation At Stowmarket Golf ClubBeverly Waspe, one of the Junior Organisers, was presented with the GolfMark High Achiever Award lastweek at Stowmarket Golf Club. This was the culmination of the work done to make Stowmarket Golf Club one of 10 clubs in Suffolk to hold the High Achiever award. Beverly said that although it had been a lot of hard work, gaining the High Achiever award made it worthwhile and was a credit to the club and the support she had received while completing the GolfMark paperwork.Beverly is pictured receiving the award from Alastair Spink, County development Officer, Suffolk Golf Partnership. Haughley open season with derby victory The new Stowmarket Bowls League started last night. Haughley entertained their local rivals Old Newton (2007) in division Two. On an increasingly cold evening, Haughley came out on top by winning 6-1 and by 90 shots to 62 overall. The best winning rink of Janet Gill, Tas Ormes and Jamie Gill beat their opponents by 41 shots to 11. Next up is Ixworth away on May 2.

Fightback glory for Stowmarket/Meadlands pairA pair from rival clubs joined forces to earn victory in the ladies doubles final at the 48th Ipswich and district Badminton League Championships at Northgate Sports Centre.A third game was needed to decide the outcome but Karen Adderson (Meadlands) and Amanda Newcombe (Stowmarket) prevailed, fighting back from 18-13 down in the decider against Sue Poole and Sarah Gooding (YMCA) to win 10-21, Stowmarket Swimming Club News.

Several Stowmarket Swimmers travelled to Norwich to compete in the 2011 East Region Youth Swimming Championships held over the bank holiday weekend. The championships were held at the UEA Sports Park competing against swimmers from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.This was the first youth championship for 15 year olds Toby Upson and Ryan Clay competing in the 15/16 age group. Toby swam a personal best time (pb) of 26.59 to finish 18th in the 50m freestyle and came 38th in the 50m butterfly in 29.86 (pb). Ryan swam the 200m breaststroke in a pb of 2.46.50 qualifying in 5th place for the final where he swam another personal best time of 2.44.05 to retain 5th place. Ryan also competed in the 50m butterfly coming in 41st place in 30.52 (pb).18-year-old Will Blackaby competed in four events in the 17+ age group achieving 25th in the 100m freestyle in a personal best time of 57.29 and 17th in 50m freestyle in 25.93. Will went on to qualify for the finals in both the 50m and 100m butterfly events with times of 27.12 (pb) and 1.00.80 respectively. Readers’ LettersCombs Ford ActionI

’m writing with concern at the speed of traffic along Needham Road, Combs Ford and the rubbish and general state of the park adjacent, in particular along the stream/river that runs through it.

You may be aware that there is a children’s play area located very close to the road. Residents, both adults and children alike make good use of the park and it is always busy.

As such, this park is an asset for residents of Stowmarket and the Council should be able to have pride in having a well maintained park. However, the park I refer to is in dire need of attention. Albeit the grass is regularly cut and tidy there are a number of areas for improvement.

At the moment, some of the walkways are lethal. The raised wooden foot path which runs alongside the river is slippery and without banisters, much of it is rotten and large parts of it are completely missing creating a major hazard. Rusty nails protrude from where the wood has broken away from its fixing.

Likewise, fencing is rather dilapidated to the perimeter.

Rubbish is strewn along the banks of the river and in it and makes it very unsightly as well as a health issue for people and wildlife.

It is terrible that a few will leave a place in such a mess and I try to pick up as much as I can when walking but it really needs a major overhaul.

Navigation Approach Tariffic LightsWhen it was being designed, and money spent on researching traffic flows. How was it they seemed to get it so wrong? It seems the main reason for the new bridge was to encourage people to enter the new Ceders Park Estate without having to cross the railway gates or travel to tescos and enter that way. Yet priority on the lights is for through traffic and not traffic going to cross the bridge or waiting to exit the bridge. Even the central footpath makes it very hard to turn right without catching your back wheel on it. Why oh why did they put in traffic lights when your trying to turn left onto the bridge. All this does is create congestion on the main carriageway for people heading to Needham Market, if this were a simple give way it would make the junction far easier. Although I’m not a traffic planner it would seem to me that a roundabout here would have suited far better, allowing a proper flow of traffic. Traveling around Stowmarket and through the Ceders Park Estate is a total nightmare and just asking for trouble as more and more homes are being built.
