Background: With the support of ECHO-USA Muslim Aid has been implementing stipend projects, since 2003 based on the yearly financial allocations and instructions. It has already created very good impression among the recipients, their family members and the community including local administration and local government bodies. Muslim Aid distributed stipend amounts once in a year to the selected students from various educational institutions in the country. In selection it covers the meritorious students from poor family background irrespective of religion, gender or other personal identities. It always include persons with disabilities in priority.

Objectives: - Financial assistance for continuing education to poor and meritorious students.

- Encourage and motivation from the day of distribution up to completion of the year of education.

Selection Criteria: We have a set criteria for selecting the students as given below:

- Students who have been studying currently in schools, colleges, universities, medical colleges, engineering & agricultural universities are eligible for stipend. Public universities, colleges and schools are given priority instead of students from private universities who are generally come from well off families.

- Students who are meritorious but have come from poor financial background of his/her family. Families that have monthly income within or below BDT 15,000, are not able to afford educational expenses of their children are given priority.

- Priorities given to orphan students and also the students with disabilities.

- The families who send their minimum 2 children in academic institutions gets priority.

- Single student from one family is generally selected but if more than 4 children from same family study in different level can get 2 stipends.

- Students selected from different areas of Bangladesh but students from renowned institutes get priority.

- Students who have been receiving stipend facilities from MABFO in the previous years are continued.

Process of selection and distribution:

Review the previous list: Normally Muslim Aid try to continue the students who received stipends in previous year/s. If somebody pass out or discontinue his/ her education in any reason or show interest not to receive the stipend in that case we eliminate the student/s from the list. New circulation for application: New notice circulated to the notice boards of respective educational institutions from there interested students collect the application form and guidelines from the weblink (Muslim Aid’s website) mentioned in the notice. Collection of application from the new students: The new applications are received by email or courier services at the Dhaka office of Muslim Aid Bangladesh. Selection/ short listing of the application: In Muslim Aid’s Dhaka office there is a committee to short list the application. Finalization of list: Incorporating the new applications within the previous lists a final list is prepared and signed by the committee members, approved by the Country Director. In case of stipends in Kuripaika school Muslim Aid receive a list from the school authority that select all the students in the school in their own way. Issuing stipend cheque: Muslim Aid’s Dhaka office (Finance Department), based on the list approved by the Country Director, issue cheques by the name of each student. Distribution events: In consultation with the local community, local administration and local government bodies we make distribution schedule in various regions with the confirmation that some of their representatives would participate there where they normally present and deliver encouraging and motivational speeches for the young students for further improvement of their education and help developing future dream among them. Finally cheques are distributed one by one to the hands of the selected students. The recipient students also express their reaction and emotion after receiving the cheques in hand.

Distribution schedule maintained in this year: Our selected beneficiaries are distributed all over the country. Considering their academic and residential places, we divided them into 5 regions, such as Dhaka, Chattogram, Barisal, Jessore, and Rangpur. Area basis students distribution is shown in the chart.
