Our Communities are fortunate to have such dedicated, compassionate people who work in these programs. The work is not easy and takes creative problem solving and much collaboration in the interconnected areas of education, income, and health.

COMMUNITY IMPACT················Walk in the Copes’ Shoes 4 Kids

Awesome August Lunch ProgramTogether, from August 1-19, our community packed and served over 2,500 lunches with the help of more than a dozen community groups and over 100 volunteers. Thank you to our special projects coordinator, Lora Litrell, for keeping everyone organized.

It is difficult for children to learn and participate in school when they are bothered by shoes that are too tight or won’t stay together, Walk in the Copes’ Shoes 4 kids program raised enough money to outfit one thousand kids with new shoes through the school year.

2016 ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES····March 29, 2016

The 2016 Annual Meeting of the United Way of the Kearney Area was held March 29, 2016. Denise Neill called the meeting to order at 12:02 p.m. starting with a welcome

after the showing of the campaign video. Denise then introduced the current board officers, the new director – Eileen Dakan and the United Way staff.

Denise then recognized the retiring board members: Tammy Blankenship, Bill Musick, Carol Renner, Rusty Rhynalds, Andy Wichelt and Caroline Lace.

The nominating committee presented a slate of new board members to serve three year terms. JoAnn Andersen from the City of Kearney was up for nomination. Andy Wichelt motioned to accept and Dave Brandt seconded; the motion passed.

Denise called attention to the minutes from the 2015 annual report and gave a final campaign update. Jon McBride was recognized for his efforts as the campaign chair. He was presented with a “black shirt” and caricature. Jon then offered a few remarks about his experience with the United Way as spokesperson this year.

Sally Bernard gave a brief update on the current financials and recommended that the money from the 2016 Jersey auction ($14,050) be included in the 2016 campaign. Dave Brandt made the motion and Tony Purvis offered a second. The motion passed. Sally announced the campaign total as $438,588.

Eileen Dakan introduced the partner agencies and offered her words of thanks for the work the agencies have done over the past year. The group then listened to the success story of “Elee” from the RAFT program.

Kelly Bartling announced the recipient of the Community Impact grant. A check presentation was made to the Economic Development Tech Hire program. Jeff Lucas from Xpanxion and Darren Robinson from Economic Development Council of Buffalo County said a few words about the project.

······························································Denise offered a president’s report where she expressed her excitement for the new things to come for the United Way with the addition of Eileen and the move to the new office space. Denise then introduced the new incoming president, Kelly Bartling.

Kelly thanked Denise for all of her work and dedication over the past year and presented her with a gift of appreciation. The meeting was adjourned at 12:40 pm.

EDUCATION ··································Improving on-time graduation rates changes every community for the better and it starts by preparing all children for Kindergarten and keeping them engaged in school through mentoring and enrichment activities. FINANCIAL STABILITY················Many local families spend more than 40% of their take home pay on housing, which does not leave enough to cover other necessities like food, utilities, or medical care. United Way’s partner agencies collaborate to prevent evictions and homelessness by providing assistance for rent and utilities.

United Way partners with postal carriers to Stamp Out Hunger, which brought in over 8,000 pounds of food to support area food pantries.
