School information
On roll 1331
No. in Sixth Form: 235
Despite its name St Ninian’s High School has no religious affiliation. The School is
regarded as a good comprehensive school with a reputation for being a friendly and
welcoming place in which to work for both students and staff. It operates on a dual
site with the Lower School accommodating Years 7, 8 & 9 and the Upper School
providing education for Year 10 to Post 16 students. The buildings are 1.9 miles
apart.
The School moved into a purpose built new Lower School on the Bemahague Site in
Onchan in September 2012. This site has modern facilities for all students and staff
to enjoy; these range from Sports Halls, Synthetic Pitches, Science Labs,
Technology suite, Art/Drama studios, Music suite etc. The new Progress Zone
brings a modern and flexible approach to teaching students with learning needs. The
School is fully networked and all members of staff are issued with a personal laptop
computer. This enables all staff to have home and school Internet access as well as
access to the School’s intranet. The School has over 800 computers available for
use. In addition it has one of the largest Apple Macintosh networks in the British
Isles. Training is provided and the aim is to enable members of staff to make full
use of modern technology in order to enhance their own learning as well as their
teaching. Students are allowed their own mobile devices in school and we are doing
much work on the developed use of New Technologies in learning.
The Upper School on the Ballaquayle Site was built in 1927. There are some
exciting plans for development over the next two years. These include a new
Progress Zone at Upper School to match the facilities at Lower School, the
developed use of space in the Sixth Form block to create more flexible spaces for
post 16 education and independent learning, as well as a new ICT facility. In
addition to the above, a rolling programme of improvements to decor and windows
are also planned.

The School’s catchment area has only recently been defined as the North Douglas,
Onchan and Laxey area of the Eastern District of the Island. Pupils in Year 6 from 8
Primary Schools in the area can choose to be admitted, 4 purely to St. Ninian’s and 4
have a choice based upon where the family actually reside or sibling rules. The
intention here is to reduce the fluctuation in school intake of recent years. In Key
Stages 3 & 4 it is envisaged the typical scenario will be a 10 form entry.Students with
additional needs are taught via the Progress Zone. This could be in discrete groups or
in mainstream dependent upon the need. In recent years the Island’s population has
grown and this has been reflected in the School’s roll. There are currently 75 students
on the School’s EAL register – mainly Portuguese, Polish, Thai and Filipino students.
It is envisaged that the school’s roll will rise to 1400 students over the next three to
five years.
The School offers a wide range of subjects at Key Stage 4 and Post 16. ‘A’ Level
results are consistently good and the GCSE results typically range between 55-67%
of students gaining 5 or more A*-C grades. Our results including Maths and English
have not been as we would have hoped and we are taking major steps to improve in
this area. The levels achieved at 5 A* to C including English and Maths recently
range between 40-53%. The academic and vocational courses are complemented by
a variety of extra-curricular activities such as Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, Enterprise
Challenge, Charity Challenge, Beach Buddies, support for the Live at Home Scheme
as well as a large variety of sporting clubs and activities.
There are also many educational visits organised by various departments to England
and the Continent of Europe. In addition extensive use is made of the Isle of Man by
many departments with educational visits taking place on a regular basis.

The Island follows the English National Curriculum with the provision to adapt it to
incorporate aspects of Island life and culture, such as local History, Art, Geography, and,
for those who wish, Manx Language.
There is a consultation due in April 2014 where the Island will consider the future of 14
to 16 education. The options being discussed at present are:
Staying with the English system
Following IGCSE for core subjects with Welsh and Northern Irish GCSEs
available for non core areas
Following the Scottish system which would probably mean movement at A Level
as well.
It is envisaged that there will be a final decision made by September 2014 ready for
implementation in September 2015.
The School employs 94 FTE teachers and around 145 full and part-time staff in total.
Staff allowances within the school are considered generous. The School provides
opportunities for all its teachers to develop their potential and further their careers and a
programme of staff development is available.
