After all the celebrat ions, we are now focused on our  journey through 2013! Many of you must have set y our personal goals this year. For Saint Michael Church, the goal I have set which I am asking all of you to support is to be able to plan and execute a year of celebration for the Parish’s 50 th Anniversary of its construction. Some might ask why celebrate a  building’s construction anniversary? The establishment of the parish maybe cel ebrated but a building? The answer to this question would help us to go deeper on our understanding of the Church as the Body of Christ. This is best explained by Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio in his article on the feast of the dedication of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome: “As a rebellious teenager, I thought the Catho- lic church should stop wasting its money on expensive churches. We ought to sell them all and buy food for the poor, I argued. Funny thing. Jesus, who cared much for the poor, did not have this attitude. As an adolescent he y earned to spend time in Herod’s sumptu ous Temple (Luke 2). As an adult, he defend- ed its integrity against the moneychangers (John 2). Francis of Assisi, who gav e away all his possessions,  begged for money to buy materials t o restore ruined churches which he rebuilt wi th his own hands. Why this high regard for ch urch buildings? Ezekiel 47 giv es us one important reason. Because the liturgi cal worship that goes on inside, most esp ecially the Eucharist, is the “source and summit” of our entire Chris- tian life. The world is a dusty, tiring place that often beats us down. The Church building is a haven, a quiet refuge, a place to encounter God. Here we drink deeply of the life-giving waters of word and sacrament that revive our drooping spirits (Psalm 23). The grace that flows from the alt ar bears us back into the world, changed, and able to change others, bringing healing and bearing fruit. Saint Paul, in I Corinthians 3, gives us another reason to honor Churches…The Church building is a mirror that, held up before us, reminds us of who we are. The world tells us that we are consumers, employees and vot ers, and flashes a constant stream of icons at us every day to remind u s of this. St. Anthony: The Father of Monastic Life Anthony was born in 251 in Egypt of wealthy Christian parents. He was

noted for his even temperament, his devotion to the Church, and obedience

his parents. Six months after coming into possession of a large fortune

through the death of his parents, he was assisting at Mass when he heard th

words of Jesus read: “Go, sell what you have and give it to the poor, and y

will have treasure in heaven.” He felt the words were directed to him and h

acted upon them. He gave away his possessions and begged an old hermit

teach him the spiritual life. Afterwards, he retired into the desert and lived

life of a hermit for many years, devoting himself to prayer and penance.

Christ’s Baptism Led to the Cross Ever since Christmas, we’ve been celebrating several manifestations of

Christ. On December 25, He showed Himself to the Jewish world, symbol

ized by the shepherds. The next Sunday was the Feast of the Holy Family,

which gives us the account when Mary and Joseph find Him in the Temple

and He reveals to them that He is the Son of His eternal Father. Last week-

end, we observed His manifestation to all the nations in the person of the

wise men, known as the Epiphany. And now, to another important event in

the life of Our Lord--His Baptism--when for the first time in history, ALL

THREE PERSONS of the Trinity revealed themselves in an outward way:

Jesus, the Father’s voice, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.

Jesus’ baptism is so significant that it is described in all four of the Gos-

pels. Just as our baptism brought us into God’s family, the Church, soChrist’s baptism launched Him into His role as Suffering Servant. You mig

say, “His baptism in the Jordan led to the Cross. Recall the words of the Fa

ther, “You are my Beloved Son. On you, my favor rests.” This is a paraphr

ing of the opening words of the first of the Servant Songs in today’s readin

of Isaiah. Jesus rose up out of the Jordan just as one day He would rise triu

 phant from the tomb!

Christ came into the world to bring us the life and light that we receive i

baptism. In our baptism, we’re empowered by the Holy Spirit to bear fruit

that will last. It’s truly a great privilege to own a divine membership in the

Body of Christ! Let’s remember that we’re included in the Prayers of the

Church wherever and whenever Mass is said, while also in constant Union

with the Whole Church (meaning Heaven, Earth, and Purgatory).

As had been announced by the Catholic Advance, Msgr. William Carr,

who has written “The Word of the Lord” on p. 2 of each issue to prepare u

for Sunday Mass, is retiring after many years. Fr. Tom Hoisington has take

over this column and has written thought-provoking statements on the Bap

tism of the Lord. I close with his words, “We might say that the Baptism o

the Lord is a foreshadowing of Pentecost. As the Holy Spirit descended up

Christ at His Baptism, so the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles at Pe

tecost. As Jesus’ baptism was the start of His public ministry, so Pentecost

was the beginning of the Church’s life.” Articles by Marcel Norma
