Saint Michael Parish Mission Statement:“We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditio
are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit ouselves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involv
all members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all.”
Notes from the Pastor: Back to normal routine! After all the celebrations, we are now focused on o
journey through 2013! Many of you must have set your personal goals this year. For Saint Michael
Church, the goal I have set which I am asking all of you to support is to be able to plan and execute a y
of celebration for the Parish’s 50th Anniversary of its construction. Some might ask why celebrate a
building’s construction anniversary? The establishment of the parish maybe celebrated but a building?
The answer to this question would help us to go deeper on our understanding of the Church as the
Body of Christ. This is best explained by Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio in his article on the feast of the
dedication of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome: “As a rebellious teenager, I thought the Cath
lic church should stop wasting its money on expensive churches. We ought to sell them all and buy fo
for the poor, I argued. Funny thing. Jesus, who cared much for the poor, did not have this attitude. A
an adolescent he yearned to spend time in Herod’s sumptuous Temple (Luke 2). As an adult, he defened its integrity against the moneychangers (John 2). Francis of Assisi, who gave away all his possessi
begged for money to buy materials to restore ruined churches which he rebuilt with his own hands. W
this high regard for church buildings? Ezekiel 47 gives us one important reason. Because the liturgica
worship that goes on inside, most especially the Eucharist, is the “source and summit” of our entire Ch
tian life.
The world is a dusty, tiring place that often beats us down. The Church building is a haven, a quiet
refuge, a place to encounter God. Here we drink deeply of the life-giving waters of word and sacrame
that revive our drooping spirits (Psalm 23). The grace that flows from the altar bears us back into the
world, changed, and able to change others, bringing healing and bearing fruit. Saint Paul, in I Corinth
3, gives us another reason to honor Churches…The Church building is a mirror that, held up before us
reminds us of who we are. The world tells us that we are consumers, employees and voters, and flashe
constant stream of icons at us every day to remind us of this. The Church building is an icon that remin
us of our deepest identity. As we gather for Sunday worship, we who were scattered by diverse loyalt

Mass Schedules & Intentions for January 12th-20th:
professions, and life-styles, are now united as the Body of
Christ and dwelling place of the Spirit. How does a person
enter the Church? Through the cleansing waters of baptis
Maybe that’s why there are holy water fonts at the doors o
most Catholic churches. Maybe those statues of saints are
there to remind us that we are “fellow citizens with the sai
and members of the family of God” (Ephesians 2:19f).
So what about all the expensive treasures of architectur
painting, sculpture, and stained glass? Sell them all and u
the proceeds to buy food for the poor? What then would t
poor have?... The loss of one’s home is a loss of one’s dig
ty. Our churches, from the local chapel to St. Peter’s Basi
ca, belong not to the hierarchy, but to the whole family.
They’ve been given to us by the hard work and contributioof our forebears to remind us of our dignity as sons and
daughters of the living God… let us allow zeal for God's
house to consume us as it did Jesus and Francis, that we m
embrace the task of purification, renewal and rebuilding...
May these words enkindle our spirit to give value to the
50th anniversary celebration of the construction of Saint M
chael Church in 2014!

St. Anthony: The Father of Monastic Life Anthony was born in 251 in Egypt of wealthy Christian parents. He was
noted for his even temperament, his devotion to the Church, and obedience
his parents. Six months after coming into possession of a large fortune
through the death of his parents, he was assisting at Mass when he heard th
words of Jesus read: “Go, sell what you have and give it to the poor, and y
will have treasure in heaven.” He felt the words were directed to him and h
acted upon them. He gave away his possessions and begged an old hermit
teach him the spiritual life. Afterwards, he retired into the desert and lived
life of a hermit for many years, devoting himself to prayer and penance.
Christ’s Baptism Led to the Cross Ever since Christmas, we’ve been celebrating several manifestations of
Christ. On December 25, He showed Himself to the Jewish world, symbol
ized by the shepherds. The next Sunday was the Feast of the Holy Family,
which gives us the account when Mary and Joseph find Him in the Temple
and He reveals to them that He is the Son of His eternal Father. Last week-
end, we observed His manifestation to all the nations in the person of the
wise men, known as the Epiphany. And now, to another important event in
the life of Our Lord--His Baptism--when for the first time in history, ALL
THREE PERSONS of the Trinity revealed themselves in an outward way:
Jesus, the Father’s voice, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.
Jesus’ baptism is so significant that it is described in all four of the Gos-
pels. Just as our baptism brought us into God’s family, the Church, soChrist’s baptism launched Him into His role as Suffering Servant. You mig
say, “His baptism in the Jordan led to the Cross. Recall the words of the Fa
ther, “You are my Beloved Son. On you, my favor rests.” This is a paraphr
ing of the opening words of the first of the Servant Songs in today’s readin
of Isaiah. Jesus rose up out of the Jordan just as one day He would rise triu
phant from the tomb!
Christ came into the world to bring us the life and light that we receive i
baptism. In our baptism, we’re empowered by the Holy Spirit to bear fruit
that will last. It’s truly a great privilege to own a divine membership in the
Body of Christ! Let’s remember that we’re included in the Prayers of the
Church wherever and whenever Mass is said, while also in constant Union
with the Whole Church (meaning Heaven, Earth, and Purgatory).
As had been announced by the Catholic Advance, Msgr. William Carr,
who has written “The Word of the Lord” on p. 2 of each issue to prepare u
for Sunday Mass, is retiring after many years. Fr. Tom Hoisington has take
over this column and has written thought-provoking statements on the Bap
tism of the Lord. I close with his words, “We might say that the Baptism o
the Lord is a foreshadowing of Pentecost. As the Holy Spirit descended up
Christ at His Baptism, so the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles at Pe
tecost. As Jesus’ baptism was the start of His public ministry, so Pentecost
was the beginning of the Church’s life.” Articles by Marcel Norma
