May 1, 2016 Sixth Sunday of Easter

By listening attentively to the Spirit promised by Jesus, the early Church resolves the question whether Gentile converts need to observe certain Jewish ritual practices.

All are called to dwell in the heavenly Jerusalem, founded on the twelve apostles of the Lamb..

May 1, 2016 Sixth Sunday of Easter

ASCENSION THURSDAY

The Feast of the Ascension is one of the great feasts in the Christian liturgical calendar, and commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into Heaven.

Forty days after the resurrection, Jesus and His disciples went to Mount Olivet, near Jerusalem. There, Jesus promised His followers that they would soon receive the Holy Spirit, and He instructed them to remain in Jerusalem until the Spirit had come. Then Jesus blessed them, and as He gave the blessing, He began to ascend into heaven. . It is plain from Scripture that Jesus' ascension was a literal, bodily return to heaven. He rose from the ground gradually and visibly, observed by many intent onlookers.

As the disciples strained to catch a last glimpse of Jesus, a cloud hid Him from their view, and two angels appeared and promised Christ's return "in just the same way that you have watched Him go" . The Ascension of Jesus Christ

is meaningful for several reasons:

1) It signaled the end of His earthly ministry. God the Father had lovingly sent His Son into the world at Bethle-hem, and now the Son was returning to the Father. The period of human limitation was at an end. 2) It signified success in His earthly work. All that He had come to do, He had accomplished. 3) It marked the return of His heavenly glory. Jesus' glory had been veiled during His sojourn on earth, with one brief exception at the Transfiguration . 4) It symbolized His exaltation by the Father. The One with whom the Father is well pleased was received up in honor and given a name above all names. 5) It allowed Him to prepare a place for us . 6) It indicated the beginning of His new work as High Priest and Mediator of the New Covenant . 7) It set the pattern for His return. When Jesus comes to set up the Kingdom, He will return just as He left- literally, bodily, and visibly in the clouds. Currently, the Lord Jesus is in heaven. The Scrip- tures frequently picture Him at the right hand of the Father—a position of honor and authority. Christ is the Head of the Church , the giver of spiritual gifts , and the One who fills all in all .

MAY, THE MONTH OF MARY

The Catholic practice of assigning a special devotion to each month goes back to the early 16th century. Since the best known of those devotions is probably the dedication of May as the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it might come as a surprise that it wasn’t until the late 18th century that this devotion arose among Jesuits in Rome.

In the early years of the 19th Century, it quickly spread throughout the Western Church, and, by the time of Pope Pius IX’s declaration of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854, it had become universal.

Mary is the Queen of Heaven and Earth. She is revered for her relationship with Christ, her Son and her love and guidance of her earthly children. She is our advocate and the spiritual mother of all humanity.

In his 1965 encyclical, “Mense Maio,” Pope Paul VI wrote about the importance of Mary’s intercession for all the world, explaining that those who encounter her, encounter her Son, Jesus. . Pope Paul VI went on to write that May is the month Christians offer the Virgin Mother more “fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God's merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother’s throne”. The Church rightly honors the Blessed Virgin with special devotion. From the most ancient times Mary has been honored with the title of “Mother of God” to whose protection the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs.

Even for people who are not Catholic, she is the Queen of All Nations and every country is her field of jurisdiction.

**************************************** “Some people are so foolish that they think they can go through life without the help of

the Blessed Mother. Love the Madonna and pray the rosary, for

her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God

pass through the Blessed Mother” Padre Pio

May 1, 2016 Sixth Sunday of Easter Sunday Scripture Reflections

Reading 1 Acts 15:1-2, 22-29

Perhaps you have seen it coming. In recent weeks, our readings from the Acts of the Apostles have shown a growing split between Jews and Gentiles in the early Christian community.

Many Jewish Christians in Jerusalem felt that the Gentile believers should be required to fulfill the law of Moses. So Paul and Barnabas went on a peacemaking mission to Jerusalem, where they met with Peter and the others. Together they chose a delegation to return to Antioch with a "peace treaty" letter.

In it they assured all Gentiles that the Holy Spirit approved of them as members of the Church. They would not be required to abide by the Mosaic Law. Reading 2 Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23 Christian artists would never run out of symbols if they went looking in the Book of Revelation.

Our reading today is filled with symbols that gleam and sparkle. The author envisions the gathering of all Christ's faithful ones in the heavenly Jerusalem. It shines like a diamond; its unsurpassed beauty flows from those who have persevered in faith. Its foundation stones are beautifully inscribed with the names of the apostles.

And, most magnificent of all, God is the temple in this shining city. And Jesus is the lamp glowing over all.

Gospel John 14:23-29 In the gospel today, Jesus continues to speak about love. Those who live will experience God's love in their lives and the gift of peace that only Christ can give.

Jesus also promises to send the Paraclete, or the Comforter, to his disciples. The Paraclete is the Holy Spirit, who will guide the Church for all time. Jesus' followers will not be left on their own.

Domingo Escritura Reflexions
