After the 1959 Cuban revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power, President Eisenhower imposed a “partial economic embargo” on Cuba that excluded food and medicine. On September 4, 1961, Congress passed the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, which authorized the President to create a “total embargo upon all trade with Cuba.” The sanctions’ goal was to weaken Fidel Castro and the Communist government in Cuba. The United States also broke diplomatic relations with Cuba and now has only 51 foreign services personnel working there at the U.S. Interest Section instead of an embassy. In April 2009, President Obama relaxed some travel restrictions to Cuba, so Cuban-Americans can now visit relatives in that country and religious groups can also make trips there. As part of the committee’s research, they visited Cuba to see the effects of the fifty year embargo for themselves. After first meeting with Cuban-Americans in Miami in February of this year to find out how they feel about the embargo, the group went to Cuba at the end of October. The twelve members of the information-seeking mission included priests, bishops and lay people, including the Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Southeast Florida, who was born in Cuba. From what they observed, the group concluded that the embargo has not weakened the communist government in Cuba, but has instead had the negative effect of giving it an excuse to suppress the people. It has affected the mission of the Christian churches in Cuba and has also affected the welfare of the common man. The Episcopal Church may pass a resolution next year recommending that the United States end its fifty year economic embargo on Cuba. One local man involved in that historic event is the Rev. Canon Dr. Isaac I. Ihiasota from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Niagara Falls. I met with Father Isaac, who provided a brief overview of The Episcopal Church, USA, and the historical relationship between the U.S. and its neighbor to the south. The Episcopal Church holds a General Convention every three years, with representatives from around the world making legislation and passing resolutions declaring where the Church stands on certain issues. Between conventions, standing committees, boards, commissions and agencies carry out the policies agreed upon and study issues to be discussed at the next meeting. Father Isaac belongs to the Standing Committee on Anglican and International Peace with Justice Concerns, which looks at national,

international and Anglican concerns. One area the committee has studied is the United States’ relationship with Cuba.

As part of the committee’s research, they

visited Cuba to see the effects of the fifty year embargo for themselves. Father Isaac’s personal feeling is that if the U.S. has been imposing these sanctions for fifty years and they have not had their intended effect, then it is time to make a change.

Originally organized in 1826 as part of the “Lewiston Circuit” of Methodist-Episcopal Churches, Exley United Methodist Church has a long history of providing Christian ministry to Wilson and the surrounding Lake Ontario communities. The current church building, centrally located at 338 Lake St. in the Village of Wilson, was constructed in 1885 with additions constructed in 1914 and 1951.

Exley UMC is a congregation of the United Methodist denomination that has its origins in an 18th century Anglican Priest named John Wesley. In Wesley’s day, the Church of England had grown stagnant and focused much of its energy on maintaining itself as an intuition. Wesley saw the need for renewal in the church, so he developed a “method” of assisting church members to live more Christ-like lives.

Wesley’s method became a movement that had two main aspects. First, Wesley began

holding weekly meetings for small groups of church members on weekday evenings. These meetings were designed to build the people’s faith through prayer, Bible study, a time of confession and pardon, encouragement to do works of mercy for others, and sharing how they saw God working in their lives. Secondly, Wesley and other preachers began holding large outdoor gatherings known as “revival meetings.” These gatherings drew thousands of non-church-goers to hear the Word of God proclaimed in an exciting and meaningful way, and they were invited to join the small group gatherings.

The people who became involved in Wesley’s movement were called “Methodists” which is where the name for the Methodist Church originated. Those who joined the Methodist movement were expected to display evidence of how God was making changes in their lives. The Methodists developed new understandings

of personal holiness, and they experienced a renewed their desire to reach out and help the less fortunate. These acts demonstrated that they were becoming “new creatures in Christ.”

In the 1970s, Exley UMC was a vibrant church with over 600 members and a great variety of ministry programming. Like many main-line churches however, Exley’s membership has declined significantly in the past 40 years. Yet, God’s ministry continues at Exley. Our members once again believe that God is poised to bring renewal to our church and community, and we have begun to see evidence of this. Last summer, God brought us Rev. John Loeser, a new and energetic pastor who constantly focuses us on the God of the Bible. He is helping us to understand that our relationships with God and with each other need to be strengthened so that we can become more Christ-like each day.

weekly worship on Sundays at 9:30am; Sunday School for children and adults following worship; a Untied Methodist Women’s group who raise money to support mission work; a ladies group that makes prayer quilts for the ill and infirm; a visitation team that ministers to those who can’t come to worship; a Bible Club for elementary age children on Mondays at 2:30pm; a Cub Scout Troop that meets on Wednesdays at 7pm; and a Community Adult group that meets monthly for fellowship and special events.

Exley also offers a community meal every Wednesday at 5pm in our dining hall. This ministry welcomes people from the community to share a meal with Exley members. Most meals are prepared in our kitchen by volunteer staff, and we also have a potluck meal every other month for variety. We always have an enjoyable time together.

Exley’s most active ministry is our music program. Exley has a 25 member choir led by two very talented directors who bring variety to the worship music. Every Christmas and Easter, the music ministry presents a Cantata. These events regularly draw people from the community to hear the Christian Gospel proclaimed in song. Choir members also participate in an annual Choral Festival, sing at special events in the community, and travel to adult care facilities and group homes to share the gift of song with special people.

In 2012, Pastor John will begin a small

group study on the early life of John Wesley which focuses on his personal struggle with the Christian faith. This study is intended to help us gain insight into our own faith struggles, and encourage us to press on and believe for renewal.

The people of Exley United Methodist Church are poised for God to do something new in our community. We are no longer satisfied with the status quo. Instead, we believe for and are actively engaged in bringing Christian renewal to the Wilson community. We invite you to join the excitement and be a part of what God is doing in our midst.

approved the purchase of private property by residents, and has given land to the Episcopal Church and other religious groups in Cuba which is being used to produce food. The Episcopal Church of the U.S. is also assisting the seminary in Cuba, having built a chapel there. Other religions, including the Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians and Baptists are all active in the country. Having a more open communications process would enable the churches to intervene on behalf of Americans who are being held in Cuban jails and Cubans who are being held in American jails.

The group visited the U.S. Interest Section in Cuba where 51 foreign services personnel are doing work that should be done by many more. They also met Communist party leaders who said that some negative effects of the embargo are that they cannot obtain parts for children’s incubators that are made only in the U.S. or certain drugs for children’s cancer treatments that are also only available from the U.S. Since the Church values human life, providing access to these necessary medical supplies

is one reason they are recommending that the embargo be lifted. The group traveled over 200 miles from Havana, finding that the Cuban people were warm and welcoming.

A more practical reason to lift the embargo is that there will be a change in leadership of the Cuban government when the 85 year old Fidel Castro and his brother Raul are gone, and building a presence now could enable the U.S. to be an honest broker in the transition to the next leadership. Economically, Cuba is exporting oil to Venezuela for refining and more oil has been discovered on the coast between Cuba and the United States. Drilling contracts are being awarded to companies from China, Spain, Russia, India and Malaysia, which have little to no experience drilling deepwater wells. If there is another blowout like the previous one in the Gulf of Mexico, it could affect the coast of Florida and the southern states, and the U.S. is the only country with the experience of successfully plugging an underwater leak.

The sub-committee met after the trip and, based on

his observations and prayerful consideration, Father Isaac drafted a resolution for the Episcopal Church to recommend that the United States lift the embargo. He feels that if the U.S. can trade half-way around the world with communist China and Vietnam when we had strained relations in the past with both countries, we should also be able to trade with eleven million Cubans who are ninety miles from our shores. The resolution will be presented at The Episcopal General Convention in Indianapolis in July 2012. At the convention two bodies - the House of Deputies, which consists of priests and lay people, and the smaller House of Bishops - must both pass the resolution for it to become policy of the Episcopal Church. If it passes, then the church will lobby the president and Congress to lift the embargo. Finally, Father Isaac pointed out that, “We are told to be our ‘brothers’ keeper.’ Wherever any Christian is in need of help in the world, the church should be there to help.”

There are 1440 minutes in every day... Schedule 30 of them for physical activity.

Adults need recess too! With a little creativity and planning, even the person with the busiest schedule can make room for physical activity. For many folks, before or after work or meals is often an available time to cycle, walk, or play. Think about your weekly or daily schedule and look for or make opportunities to be more active. Every little bit helps. Consider the following suggestions:

• Walk, cycle, jog, skate, etc., to work, school, the store, or place of worship.• Park the car farther away from your destination. • Get on or off the bus several blocks away. • Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.• Play with children or pets. Everybody wins. If you find it too difficult to be active after work, try it before work.•Take fitness breaks-walking or doing desk exercises-instead of taking cigarette or coffee breaks. • Perform gardening or home repair activities.

• Avoid labor-saving devices-turn off the self propel option on your lawn mower or vacuum cleaner. • Use leg power-take small trips on foot to get your body moving.• Exercise while watching TV (for example, use hand weights, stationary bicycle/treadmill stairclimber, or stretch).• Dance to music.• Keep a pair of comfortable walking or running shoes in your car and office. You’ll be ready for activity wherever you go! • Make a Saturday morning walk a group habit. Walk while doing errands.Tips for People Who Have Been Inactive

for a WhileUse a sensible approach by starting out slowly.• Begin by choosing moderate-intensity activities you enjoy the most. By choosing activities you enjoy, you’ll be more likely to stick with them. • Gradually build up the time spent doing the activity by adding a few minutes every few days

or so until you can comfortably perform a minimum recommended amount of activity (30 minutes per day).• As the minimum amount becomes easier, gradually increase either the length of time performing an activity or increase the intensity of the activity, or both.• Vary your activities, both for interest and to broaden the range of benefits.• Explore new physical activities.• Reward and acknowledge your efforts.

Wacky weather with walloping wind whipping a hurricane, Not to mention woeful winters with snow and pouring rain. Then a terrible earthquake that could rattle anybody’s brain! Will harsh natural events contribute to people going insane?

When definitely; not even an overwhelming Tsunami flood. Would promote the mad practice of shedding innocent blood, Of course man won’t stop volcanoes from spewing out crud. Nor protect valley homes from down sliding, rumbling mud. Traumas of babes being born and then quickly an early death, Astoundingly smokers grasp for smokes until their last breath. With the crashing of cars and trucks; along with falling of jets, While many without wisdom asked; “is this as bad as it gets?” Amazingly; that since the rebellion of man; it’s not a lot worse! Especially as the fall of man; brought down a terse curse verse! There are a few men; who will not be making any colossal bets. That globally mankind will find; this just, isn’t as bad as it gets! Some people might come to know how good life could really be. When the time comes for them to enter past the gates of Eternity!

The Stephen Ministries is a non-for-profit Christian training organization based in St. Louis. Since 1975 they have provided high-quality, Christ-centered training and resources to more than 9000 congregations from more than 100 denominations. Stephen Ministers follow the example of St. Stephen who helped individuals one on one.The Stephen series of training is a complete system for training and organizing lay people to provide one-on-one Christian care to hurting people in your congregation and the community.

Imagine the difference your congregation would make if they had 10, 20, 30 or more well trained lay caregivers to work with your pastor in providing caring ministry to people who are hurting. That’s the difference the Stephen ministry is making in thousands of communities.

Why the Stephen Ministry

John 13:34b “ Love one another as I have loved you”

Matthew 25:40 “Just as you did it to one of least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep”

The Stephen

Ministry helps by giving high quality care to:

Those grieving the loss of a loved one Those with chronic illness & their

Terminally ill people and their families family

People who are house bound Those who are separated or divorced

Victims of disasters Those experiencing birth problems

The hospitalized Those with job problems

The aging and

elderly

Stephen Ministry is caring for people with total confidentiality.

Caring for Arlene

When Arlene’s husband, Phil, died in an auto accident, Arlene was left to take care of her three young children by herself. There was a wonderful outpouring of help for a while. However two months after he died most of the support dried up. Arlene began to feel overwhelmed, alone and angry, that Phil died and left her alone. One time she even walked out of the house with a full suitcase just to get away. However she returned in a few minutes.

Her neighbor, Mary, checked in with her every once in awhile. This was one of the days Mary did and noticed the suitcase sitting by the door. She innocently asked Arlene if she was going on a trip. Arlene broke down and told the whole story to Mary. Mary listened to her and asked her if she could talk to her pastor to see if Arlene could

have a Stephen Minister. Later that day the Stephen Leader who served as referral coordinator, called Arlene and made an appointment for an interview the next day.

Sandra was assigned to be Arlene’s Stephen Minister and she visited her the next day. At first they were very formal and Arlene felt in control that day. When Sandra called her the next day, however, Arlene felt totally overwhelmed and told Sandra about her sadness and frustration. Sandra listened for almost an hour. They agreed that, in addition to the weekly visits, Arlene would call Sandra whenever she was feeling overwhelmed.

After a while Arlene’s anger turned to deep sadness. Sometimes when she met with Sandra, Arlene would cry for much of the hour. Arlene’s pain weighed on Sandra also. Sandra cared so deeply that she felt quite a bit of Arlene’s sadness and loneliness. It was like Arlene was walking through the valley of the shadow of death and Sandra was

walking beside her all the time.

Sandra made sure she was with Arlene on the 0ne-year anniversary of Phil’s death and that day seemed to mark a turning point. Arlene began to talk more frequently about the good time with Phil and the children.

On the second anniversary of Phil’s death they went out to lunch together. Arlene was very sad that day but talked about how she was finally resigned to missing Phil. Then they talked about a vacation that Arlene, her children and their neighbor Carolyn’s family was planning on taking together. At Sandra’s next supervision session she told her group that it might be time to discuss closure with Arlene. They agreed and talked about how she might proceed.

Sandra and Arlene met weekly for the next couple of months. They talked about all the two of them have shared over the last two years. When Sandra brought up the idea of bringing the formal caring relationship to

a close, Arlene was a bit apprehensive about not having Sandra as her Stephen Minister. But Sandra assured her that they could still be friends, and she would be there for Arlene whenever Arlene needed her.

This is one example of what Stephen Ministry can do. If you or your congregation would like to learn more or become involved, please feel free to contact us at The Samaritan Counseling Center 716-743-9117 or if your outside of Erie & Niagara counties call

1-800-660-5053 or visit us at:www.sccwny.org .

Different Colored Boats“The book Different Colored Boats are collected writings that will discuss different teachings of the various relationships with God. The title comes from a friend of mine who coined the phrase. In a discussion one day about the community group that I established

(which works with churches of many denominations to meet and address community needs); he confided in me that he has realized that all Christians are on the same water, trying to get to the same place, just in “different colored boats” The book is authoired by the

CCC Director, Kevin Walker, who spent the better part of a year collecting over 200 seroms and selcting the ones that gave a unique perspective. Various denominations, writing styles and stories are used throughout the book to illustrate the point. In

addition to the sermons there is a personal testimony and anonymous stories. The book is available for purchase through the publisher’s wesite Publish America, at: http://www.publishamerica.net/product15528.html

“Baby” Joe Mesi who was recently inducted by The National Veteran Boxers Assoc. into the 2011 Buffalo Boxing Hall of Fame visited Christian Academy of WNY this week to  promote the annual Dinner/Auction to be  held  March 16, 2012 at Banchetti’s Restaurant. He said that raising money  for the school was important for our sports programs, teachers salaries, music programs and other things.. he encouraged out kids by saying that it didn’t matter if they are they best, but to always give their best whether in math, music, sports, dance  whatever gifting God has given to them,

That at the end of the day, if we can look back and see that we have given and done our best, that is what counts. He never tried to win, although he never lost, because he always gave his best

at practices and at his matches.

 The public is invited

Over 50 volunteers a day make our service a reality. We are able to provide meals 7 days a week. We deliver meals M-F between 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Weekend meals are frozen and delivered on Fridays. We serve delicious home-cooked meals made daily in our own kitchen. Our clients take a minimum of 3 meals a week. These clients receive a hot meal and they may opt to have second meal delivered. Hot meals are $3.75 and cold meals are $1.75. We offer a variety of diets to accommodate the needs of our seniors. We provide more than a meal as our clients will tell you. Our volunteers check in on the clients and assess their well-being every time a meal is delivered. When a client doesn’t answer the door or is unwell, we take action and make sure the appropriate steps are taken to help the clients and to reach family. Volunteers are always welcomed.
