UNDER CONSTRUCTION

My father used to joke that there were only two seasons, winter and

construction. If you have tried to make your way around this summer, be it

Waukesha, Milwaukee or elsewhere, no doubt you have seen the orange

barrels, the different painted lines, the flag wavers, the giant cranes…ugh.

If you are like me, when you drive past I-94 and the zoo interchange you

ask yourself: “what the heck are they doing?” Like me, you were not

consulted about the construction plans. We were not invited to dialog with

the project supervisor on how many feet or miles any particular turn would

take or how long this project is going to last, or cost. That is frustrating.

The good news is that the people in charge have had a vision of this project

before the first shovel or bulldozer began digging. They could see the final

product and know what it would look like before we would maneuver around

the orange barrels. Being ‘under construction’ can feel like an inconven-

ience. Yet, the church has been under construction for thousands of years.

The problem for us is that we can’t always see Jesus’ vision for the church.

Instead, we think we have the vision. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus and

Peter have a conversation similar to this:

Simon Peter said, “You’re the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the

living God.” Jesus came back, “God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah!

You didn’t get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father

in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am.

And now I’m going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter,

a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a

church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will

be able to keep it out.” - Matthew 16:16-18

Upon the confession that Jesus is the Messiah, the

son of the living God, Jesus builds his church.

Wherever and whoever claims Jesus as Lord will

ensure the church is always under construction—

orange barrels of faith everywhere. And, Jesus is

not quite done. We can’t yet see the final product

and it’s tough because construction feels unfin-

ished. Doug Hastad, the president of Carroll

University, has been credited with saying “if there

aren’t cranes on campus, then we are not growing.”

That same principle may apply to St. Mark’s—as a people and a building. As

new people become a part of this community through ‘Immersion’, and as

we see different needs of our building to help us gather and grow, the church

is and always will be under construction. It’s important to remember that

Jesus is the architect! We get to grab a hammer and help build upon that

rock of Peter’s confession that Jesus, our architect, is in charge and building

his church right here! Pastor Andy

From Deaconess Marcia Marquardt

Dear St. Mark’s Family and Friends,

Have you ever wished that God would just write the

answer to your problem down for you or leave a

message that outlines exactly what you need to do

next? We often live with uncertainty and confusion as

we face day-to-day challenges. We need God’s wisdom

and direction, but it’s often hard to understand what he

is really saying to each one of us individually.

Can you imagine a life where God whispers to you and

you follow him? Can you picture yourself learning and

practicing being aware of God’s presence so that you

can hear the whispers he has in mind for you? Can you

imagine the exciting steps he might have in mind for

you as he uses you for good?

You are invited to participate in the Power of a Whisper

four-week small group sessions in October. People will

gather in small groups to watch video presentations

from Pastor Bill Hybels and discuss the issues present-

ed. Sign up for a group in the narthex at church. You

can check who is leading a group and when and where

they will be meeting (different days of the week and

times will be offered). Don’t worry if you can’t make

every session. Each session’s materials stand on their

own. You will still get a lot out of this series even if you

attend just one session. This is a great way to get to

know others at St. Mark’s. Invite friends to join us, too.

As always, I’d love to get to

know you! Don’t hesitate to

contact me so that we can sit

down for a chat soon.

God’s Blessings!

The church is past mid-year and is finishing up the

Summer season. Summer has been anything but slow,

with nine members (youth and advisors) representing

us at the ELCA youth gathering in Detroit. The quilters

donated several quilts to Lutherdale camp for their

Quilt Fest. Wednesday evening services and Thursday

morning Bible study continued throughout the Summer

as well. We hosted the Spoke folk, held a great inter-

generational vacation bible camp, and put up a second

Little Library in front of Blair school. And, these are

just a FEW of our ministries and projects that are

making a difference.

We look forward to the renewed enthusiasm that Fall

brings to church life and to all the faith stories and

strong stewardship that you all bring.

Be strong in your faith and good stewards with what

God has entrusted to you.
