Time flies when you’re having fun!
Four years ago, I visited St. Mark’s for the first time and met the
Church Council and congregation on separate occasions in June.
Later that summer, Mary and I moved to Huntsville, and I
began my ministry with you as Pastor on August 1st. This
continues to be a fruitful and fulfilling ministry for me, and I
desire most for St. Mark’s to discern and discover new ways we
can together “make disciples for Christ.”
What inspired me earlier this year to apply for and be accepted
to the seminar I will attend in June – “Ministry to and with the
Next Generations” – were these two things:
Many comments were made within the Shepherd Groups regarding the need to grow
the congregation, especially among young adults and young families.
I analyzed the data for our current active adult members and grew concerned by the
percentages: 40% are 70 and older: 34% are 50 – 69; 26% are 25 – 49.
Please know that I am motivated, not by congregational survival, but by the Great
Commission! In obed ience to the command o f our Lord Jesus Christ [ELW], I seek your
enlistment and support in this ministry of making disciples. I am grateful that we have
agreed to call an Associate Pastor to help us, but we cannot wait for another staff person to
come and partner with us. As members of “the priesthood of all believers” [Martin Luther],
you and I are all called and commissioned to make disciples for Christ.
So where would I like everyone to begin?
PRAY: Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you and our church family boldness, wisdom, and
love.
READ: Devote yourself to reading and reflecting upon the Word of God. Begin by
reading a chapter per day from the Book of Acts during the month of June.
LEARN: Learn how you can engage in relational evangelism. You can change the world
in small ways one person at a time!
INVITE: As you connect with people, discover who might be blessed by our worship
services and the fellowship of believers. Invite for a specific date, coupled with brunch/
lunch together after the service. You will be surprised how favorably people will
respond when the invitation is personal!
In Christ’s love,
from Pastor Gary

Church Family News Please pray for these women as they enter their final trimester this summer: Jennifer
Matthews, Chrissie Provancha, and Sarah Radovich. Due dates are in early September.
Our prayers are lifted up for Mary Bryson, Walt Kittelson, and Mary Ann Williams
who were hospitalized in May.
Please pray for our Southeastern Synod Assembly as it meets in Chattanooga on May
31 – June 2 and our new Bishop is elected. Our voting members will be Traci Billman,
Jed Deason, Andy Sieja, and Pastor Gary Soop. Brianna Sieja and Mary Soop will be
attending as visitors.
Pastor Gary will be attending a week-long seminar in Grand Rapids, Michigan follow-
ing Synod Assembly. He welcomes your prayers for traveling mercies and new insights
gained from “Ministry to and with the Next Generations: How Millenials and Gen Z
are Changing the Church.”
We give thanks to God for these friends who have served the Lord on Church Council
and are concluding their term: Derek Spadaro [President], Chris Myers [Secretary], Jed
Deason [Treasurer], Tom Duncan [Board of Learning], Steve Williams [Board of Wit-
ness and Outreach], and Karen Szymczyk [Board of Worship].

Taking a break for the summer, Sunday School for our children and
youth (and a couple adult classes) will resume with Rally Day on
August 18. Thank you again to all of our teachers and helpers this
year—for all ages. It was another great year!!
Our Sunday School offering (~$1,000) went to purchase a family farm which
consisted of tools, a cow, two goats, pigs and a dozen chicks; a rooster; a share
in a water well; and some honey bees—all through ELCA Good Gifts. If you
have a suggestion for next year’s offering recipient, please let Traci or
someone on the Board of Learning know.

June 24-28 Day Camp (all day) For children who have completed K - 6th grade
Monday – Thursday, 9-4 PM, and Friday, 9-Noon
Day Camp is a wonderful blend of outdoor and congregational ministry! Daily Bible stories,
crafts, and music are created for children and led by loving counselors. Day Camp includes three
off-site field trips (e.g. Botanical Gardens, Green Mountain, and Monte Sano). Limited spaces are
available. All forms and fees may be submitted to the church office.
June 30 VBS (1-7 pm) On June 30, from 1:00 to 7:00 pm, we will have Vacation Bible School for
everyone. We will have songs, games, crafts and Bible stories for everyone to
participate in, whether you have children or not. The idea is to host an
intergenerational summer-time event, that allows for the entire church family
to participate. Our day will begin with opening ceremonies at 1 pm in the sanc-
tuary, followed by a myriad of activities that allows for you to do and see as you are able. The day
will culminate with a shared meal and closing ceremonies. REGISTER by signing up in Commu-
nication Central.
July 8-12 Arts Camp (all day) For children who have completed 3 year old Preschool – 2nd grade (age 8)
Monday thru Thursday, 9 am – 4 pm, and Friday, 9 am – 12 pm
A new idea for St. Mark’s, this camp is geared toward our younger kids with an emphasis on arts
and crafts. In addition to whole group activities like songs and games, each child will be placed in
a small group, led by a counselor, and participate in a daily Bible study and skill-appropriate
projects and activities. To accommodate a younger crowd, the schedule is set in ‘mini-sessions’ to
allow for shorter attention spans. An afternoon rest/ movie time is built into each day. All forms
and fees may be submitted to the church office.
July 14-20 St. Mark’s @ Lutheridge Register online at www.lutheridge.com – DO let Traci know when you have registered.

with doubt and fear. Join this new
study, all are welcome. Coordinator,

Food Pantry
A long-time ministry to serve
hungry families and individuals
in the Huntsville area through
referrals from the IMS Food Line,
distribution through CASA and
by helping clients who walk into
the church. In April, we provided
40 bags of food to CASA for dis-
tribution to their clients and filled
22 orders for the Food Line which
provided food for 66 people.
Food Truck Ministry
Every first Thursday we partner
with Manna House to go and
provide meals for our neighbors
at Johnson Towers (216 Seminole Dr.) at
5 pm. In April, we served ~120 meals. This
month, our goal is to prepare and serve 125
tuna salad sandwich meals.
If you would like to help in any capacity (food
and supply donations, preparation or serving),
please see Traci to sign up. Our next serving
day is June 6.
Note: While not all ages can do all jobs, our
third graders and up (with their parents) are
invited to come and help serve water or meals.
This month, please support
the Food Pantry with
Pasta/Noodles
(16 oz pkg)
Opportunities to Serve

Mom Bags - depending on your perspective, Christmas is a
long way off OR Christmas will be here in about two seconds!
With the latter thinking in mind, we are going to be collecting items for

are for the motherly figures in the lives of some of the visitors to Manna House.
We will be collecting full-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and
lotion; in addition, candles and nail polishes. After that, we’ll supplement with
random items like jewelry, make-up, etc. Please put any donations, labelled, in

Themes
Ahhh, June…the whole summer in front of us. Meanwhile, planning has
begun for God’s Work, Our Hands. This year we will be donning our
gold T-shirts on Sunday, September 8 to serve God and community.
There are a number of ministries being considered this year including
service with Loaves and Fishes, Kairos Prison Ministry, Kids to Love,
Manna House, the Huntsville Green Team, Habitat for Humanity, a local
memory care facility, and the list goes on. However, in order to fully
serve, we need someone to champion the cause for one of these minis-
tries. If you are passionate about one of these activities (or if you have a special enthusiasm for an-
other organization that might benefit from God’s Work, Our Hands), we would love to hear from
you. For more information or to join us, please contact Steve Williams, David Schultz or the
church office.

Bold Move Task Force Resolution
As part of the semi-annual congregational meeting held on
May 5, Council President Derek Spadaro presented a very
brief summary of the efforts set forth by the Bold Move Task
Force. A summary of the rationale as to why the Council felt
that a “Bold Move” was necessary to promote growth in
ministry within the Church, as well as the means by which
the Council arrived at a resolution was also discussed. The
resolution was presented for a vote to the congregation and
supported by a majority vote.
In a phased approach, and of which the council endorses, begin to enact the vision of the Bold
Move Task Force.
Phase 1 - Forming a call committee to place a call to an Associate Pastor to this church.
Phase 2 - Forming a task force tasked with expansion of the food ministry of this church.
Phase 3 – Forming a task force to investigate near term renovation projects to support the
Phases 1 and 2, AND to continue to refine the long term vision of the campus.
