“Saved by Grace, we are called to Celebrate,

Serve and Make Disciples for Christ”

On Wednesday evenings during Lent (March 5 - April 1), we will have a meal in the Fellowship Hall beginning at 5PM and a service at 6:30PM in the Sanctuary.

Palm Sunday, April 5, begins Holy Week. The Seder Meal will be at 5:30PM on Maundy Thursday, April 9, followed by a service in the Sanctuary at 7PM. Good Friday Services will be at 12 Noon and 7PM on April 10, and Stations of the Cross will be available all day. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt and pot-luck meal on Saturday, more details to come.

Easter Sunday will begin with an outdoor service at 6:30AM. Breakfast will be served in the Fellowship Hall from 7:30 - 10:30AM. We will flower the cross at 10:00AM. Worship services will be in the Sanctuary at the usual times of 8:30AM and 11AM.

Members of the Grand View University Choir, one of our ELCA colleges in Des Moines, Iowa, will be touring within the Southeastern Synod this spring. There will be a freewill offering for the choir.

This is a wonderful opportunity for extending hospitality and encourage-ment to these young adults! This event is also well suited for inviting people to St. Mark’s!

Concert flyers (for inviting and advertising) are available from

the church office.

Spring forward an hour before bed on March 7!

P a g e 2 S t . M a r k ’ s M e s s e n g e r

You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints

and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the

apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. In Christ

the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the

Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling-place for

God. [Ephesians 2:19-22]

Lent is a season for spiritual renewal and a reminder of God’s calling

for our community.

These words quoted above are personal favorites, for they express

God’s great desire and design for the Church. Read them again and

again during Lent, and you begin to understand our reason for being.

Building up the Body of Christ and helping members to be built

together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God have been central to my pastoral ministry for

forty years. Yet this work has its ups and downs. I recall my days as the Mission Developer and

Pastor for Spirit of Peace Lutheran Church in Georgia. There would be seasons of growth as new

members gave vitality and brought excitement to our life together. But just when we seemed on

the verge of something grand, we often faced a setback in the form of new military assignments

and relocations. As a congregation, we learned patience and perseverance. We lived up to our

name. We prayed together for God’s guidance for the unknown future. We gave generously. Over

time, the congregation gained strength, new growth, and was able to fund the building of a first

church home.

My experiences with St. Mark’s during the past nine months have reminded me of those days. We

are on the verge of some grand new endeavors that were endorsed by the congregation in May

2019 as part of the Bold Move. But decisions were made during last year’s Synod Assembly and

Churchwide Assembly that some of our members could not support, and so they no longer

support St. Mark’s through their worship participation and personal stewardship. Although each

person indicated that it had nothing to do with me, it still hurts. I miss the fellowship I shared with

these folks. I miss their assistance with Sunday worship. As was noted during our February 17

Council meeting, the loss of their faithful giving is also having an impact on the congregation.

Although I do not know who gives how much to support the Church, I have learned that these

membership losses equal $85,000 of giving which is more than 10% of our annual budget.

I do not play the blame game, for I’ve learned from experience that God will give the growth

and God will provide as we commit our ways to the Lord and are committed together to this

community of faith which Christ seeks to build into a spiritual house. Over 200 members of this

household of God came to the celebration meal for our mortgage payoff. Let’s all stand up and be

counted as faithful stewards of our personal gifts and finances so that God’s vision for 2020 and

beyond becomes reality!

In Christ’s love,

from Pastor Gary

Lenten Crosses

One of our outward symbols of our Lenten reflection is the wearing of a simple wooden cross. These crosses are made of olive wood from Jerusalem. They are worn from Ash Wednesday thru Good Fri-day to remind us to pray daily and as a sacrifice (putting away gold jewelry) for Lent.

Please find your cross from years past and be ready for Lent! If you have not received one before, there are crosses available at church, or you may reach out to the church office or contact Mary Niemeyer so we can get one to you.

Join the Conversation! What is God’s purpose for St. Mark’s?

We are ready to engage the entire congregation in another important

conversation in the call process: What is God’s purpose for St. Mark’s?

In this article, you’ll find a summary of next steps, events and re-

sources to participate further in the call process.

Our first survey was defined by the requirements of the Ministry Site

Profile, which is a standardized document submitted to the Synod. It

defined the characteristics of our Church and the gifts for ministry that are important to our

congregation. Simply put, it summarized, Who are we today?

An overwhelming majority of our members expressed the desire to participate in a forward-

looking conversation. This includes visioning, ideation and conversation around the ministry

tasks for a new Associate Pastor. The Call Committee identified five key ministry tasks for a

new Associate Pastor. Your feedback will be used to develop a position description for this

role.

Now, we want to ask:

What is God’s purpose for St. Mark’s? and What do we want to become? How do you see an Associate

Pastor living out these tasks? What activities do you envision? What skills or strengths are necessary for

each ministry task? How does God want us to grow – as a Church family and in support of our mission –

with regard to each area? What does living out this task look like on a day-to-day basis? What else should

we consider?

Ministry Tasks:

Innovation/Creativity

Youth & Family Ministry

Campus/Young Adult Ministry

Small Group Ministry

Evangelism/Mission

There are four ways to provide your feedback, and we’re asking the exact same questions with

each method.

How to get involved:

1. Attend a roundtable discussion on Sunday, March 8th from 9:45am-10:45am in the

Fellowship Hall. We will facilitate discussion in a round-robin style format, which

will allow you to interact with many members on multiple survey topics in a short

amount of time.

P a g e 7 P a g e 7

2. Participate in dinner conversations at Wednesday Lenten Suppers (March 11, 18, 25) –

A member of the Call Committee will be available at each of these events for members

who want to provide feedback or ask questions, from 5:45 - 6:15PM.

3. Submit an online survey. We are accepting online responses to the same questions as

presented at the roundtables. Survey Link: http://bit.ly/stmarkssurvey2

4. Submit a paper survey. Paper surveys will be available in the Church office or

Communications Central.

All survey/questions/feedback are requested by Wednesday, March 25th. We are truly blessed

with a congregation who makes growing St. Mark’s mission for future generations a priority.

BURN OUR MORTGAGE!

In case you missed the celebration, we didn't actually set any-

thing on fire, but we did celebrate our amazing accomplishment

with delicious German food and a stampede of children tearing

through a giant copy of the mortgage. Thank you to everyone

who came out to enjoy the fellowship and help us celebrate.

And an even bigger thanks to all those who have donated, sup-

ported, and prayed to make us mortgage free in 2020!

Courtney Spadaro organized a great celebration and had some

great help including Jennifer Mullin, Jim Mullin and Bri, Lara

and Tim Sieja. We thank you all for your hard work in bringing

this great celebration and time of fellowship to fruition!

THANK YOU St. MARK'S

Have you ever thought about learning watercolor painting as a great learning experience or as a potential hobby?

Now’s your opportunity. Beginning in March, a beginners’ class will be held each Saturday at St. Mark’s from 10 a.m. - Noon (or possibly to 1 p.m.). Dennis Fakes and Ted Mueller will lead the class.

The class is free. But, there MAY be a charge for supplies (we're trying to get the supplies

furnished). IF we have to charge for materials, it will likely be $25-30.

Come, bring a friend (or two) and prepare for learning and fun.

This is a four week class, but if you must miss one Saturday it is still worthwhile. The class size is limited to the first 15 applicants, so you need to act soon! Please enroll by emailing [email protected] or calling 256-655-7522 (leave contact information and a message about your desire to attend).

Please join us for this exciting event!

The approved 2020 budget is $822,024, including the estimated cost of calling an Associate Pastor in the last half of the year. We will need to be receiving approximately $68,500 monthly to meet this budget. Our expenses are projected to be approximately $62,960 in the first half of the year and $72,377 in the last half of the year.

We are looking forward to a great 2020 at St. Mark’s in many ways!

Mom Bags. What, already? Didn’t we just do those? Yes. Yes, we did.

However, it was noted that a lot of our collections were done at the same time of year. So, in an

effort to ‘space’ out our collection ministries, we are going collect items for Mom Bags in the

early part of the year only and then have a packing date later in the year. So, to that end, there

will be a shopping bag and list distributed in mid-February for everyone to fill and return. If

you have any questions about this change, or the ministry in general, please see Traci.

Remind me again. What are Mom Bags?

They are gifts for maternal figures, distributed by Manna House at Christmas time. If you are

wanting to go ahead and go shopping now, here is the list: full-size shampoos and conditioners,

full-size body wash and lotion, jar candles, nail polish, and something pretty. Thanks in

advance for your help and giving heart!

I am seeking adults and confirmed youth who would like to enlist and serve the Lord on Sunday mornings in the following roles: Assisting Minister, Communion Server, Greeter, Lector, Usher. I’ll gladly provide the training - please contact me this month.

The World Day of Prayer is an international

ecumenical Christian laywomen’s initiative.

It is celebrated annually in over 170 coun-

tries on the first Friday in March. The

movement aims to bring together women of

various races, cultures and traditions in a

yearly common Day of Prayer.
