It is not required that a person wear the ashes for the rest of the day, and they may be washed off after Mass. However, many people keep the ashes as a reminder until the evening. Sixth Sunday of ordinary times

Catholic Online is a resource for many common questions asked about the Catholic Church and how we practice Christianity. In looking at their reference on Lent, one finds the following (edited for brevity):

Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. This day opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. It takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. The ashes are blessed by the priest at Mass and assisting ministers often help to distribute

them. As the priest or minister applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Alternatively, they may speak the words, "Repent and believe in the Gospel."

Ashes also symbolize grief, in this case, grief that we have sinned and caused division from God. Writings from the Second-century Church refer to the wearing of ashes as a sign of penance. Priests or assisting ministers administer ashes during Mass and all are invited to accept the ashes as a visible symbol of penance. Even non-Christians and the excommunicated are welcome to receive the ashes. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches, taken from the previous year's Palm Sunday Mass. It is not required that a person wear the ashes for the rest of the day, and they may be washed off after Mass. However, many people keep the ashes as a reminder until the evening.

Let us look forward to this Lent, determined to become more who God

knows we can be through his grace and mercy.

Lenten regulations for Catholics These are the MINIMUM for Lent. All are encouraged to thoughtfully consider going beyond these minimum regulations.

The Christian faithful are to do penance through prayer and fasting, abstinence and by exercising works of piety and charity. All Fridays through the year, especially during Lent, are penitential days.

Abstinence: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent.

Fasting: All those who are 18 or older, until their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s need; but together, they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be affected seriously. People in doubt about fast or abstinence should consult a priest.

CFSA 2018 Today we collect pledge cards for the Catholic Family Sharing Appeal – 2018. This is an opportunity for us to unite with all Catholics in the diocese to share our blessings and to show our concern for one another. Every gift, regardless of the size, is important to the success of Catholic

Family Sharing Appeal and the many ministries that it supports. If you did not bring yours this week, please fill it out and return it as soon as possible. We need participation from everyone to support the many works of our diocesan church. If you cannot participate financially, fill out your card and offer a prayer for the success of Catholic Family Sharing Appeal. Our goal is 100% participation through time, talent and treasure. Again, any amount raised above the goal will stay in the parish. To those who returned their cards, thank you for your generous response!

Easter Cantata Practice for the 2018 Bon Homme Community Easter Cantata is on Sunday, February 11th at the First Baptist Church in Avon at 2:00pm. This year’s Cantata will be directed by Autumn Schultz. Past participants and new singers are welcome to join us!

What Should I Give Up for Lent? Lent is the perfect time to form new life-giving habits and abandon old self-destructive habits. But most of us just give up chocolate. Then, when Easter arrives, we realize we really haven’t grown spiritually since the beginning of Lent.

Giving things up can help us to have a meaningful Lent, but that’s not what Lent is really all about. Lent is about doing something—something bold to become a better husband or wife, father or mother, son or daughter, friend, neighbor, etc. What if this year you did more than just give up something during Lent? Do something life-changing. Sign up for Dynamic Catholic’s Best Lent Ever.

ENCOUNTER LENT Join our faith community and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a life-changing Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl from entrances of the churches today and don’t forget to download the CRS Rice Bowl app! During the 40 days of Lent, as companions on the journey, we will encounter our neighbor.
