Most of us were able to hunker down and stay safe and warm, but some very brave souls were out plowing roads, providing emergency and regular medical care, cooking meals for snowed-in neighbors and trying to find ways to entertain stir-crazy kids. Winter has a way of making us take time with each other and to slow down just for a little while. As we enter into the new year and new decade, there is much to ponder and pray about. In keeping with the Feast Day of the Epiphany of the Lord, we would do well to think about seeking Christ during the year ahead of us. My seeking Christ this month will include my annual clergy retreat. I will be going for my first time to the Benedictine Monastery in Schuyler, NE, at the end of the month. Priests and deacons are required to make a retreat each year, and this works best for my schedule. Instead of being part of a group of several priests and deacons, I will be on my own in silence. I will meet with a spiritual director each day who will give me what I need to read, pray over or sit with Gods Spirit. My main aims will be to listen to the Holy Spirit, respond in prayer and allow God to give me whatever he knows I need. This type of retreat is vital to helping me be a good and effective pastor. As the old saying goes, You cant fill your bucket from an empty well.If I dont allow myself special time like this to be renewed and refreshed, I will quickly run out of energy, ideas and graces to share with others. With Broom Tree Retreat Center so very close to us, I strongly encourage you to also seek out some quiet time there to recharge spiritually. In the silence, God speaksis the motto of the retreat center. There are many one day opportunities, as well as weekends, offered there. The fact that the facility is so close to us offers us more opportunities than many in our diocese may have. Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton also has a number of one day opportunities, as well as sisters trained in spiritual direction who can help people individually. We all need some guidance in our spiritual journeys, just as the Magi needed the star to guide them. I’m writing this while watching the last of the weekend blizzard being plowed off the north parking lot at St. Leo’s in Tyndall. Most of us were able to hunker down and stay safe and warm, but some very brave souls were out plowing roads, providing emergency and regular medical

care, cooking meals for snowed-in neighbors and trying to find ways to entertain stir-crazy kids. Winter has a way of making us take time with each other and to slow down just for a little while. Adult Bible Study

”Presence, The Mystery of the Eucharist” Do you ever feel like God is far away? The whole story of salvation is the story of God being present to his people—in Eden, in the wilderness, in the Temple, and finally in the Person of Jesus Christ. But the story doesn’t stop there. He is still here with us—in

disguise. Under the appearance of bread and wine, Jesus Christ is truly present in his Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. In the Eucharist, the God of the universe invites us into a deeper experience of his perfect love—and he is waiting for you! Presence explores the radical mystery of God’s love expressed in the Eucharist and shows how in this sacrament God is truly present to help and strengthen us at every step of life’s journey. By diving into the story of God’s love for his people in Scripture and the Church’s teaching on this sacrament, Presence invites each one of us into a deeper, more intimate union with God. He is ready and waiting for us—all we need to do is receive his gift. St Leo & St Vincent’s will be offering adult studies beginning the week of Feb 16, 2020. Participants will meet every week for 5 weeks to view an engaging video presentation, followed by a time of lively group discussion and fellowship. To join our Adult Bible Study, please contact JoLynn by Jan 12 so materials may be ordered--660-7008 or email [email protected].

A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar Today’s gospel tells us “all Jerusalem” was upset because “King Herod was deeply troubled.” A similar ripple effect happens in families; one person’s negative attitude can affect the whole family. If you want a peaceful and joyful home, it must start with you. Be peaceful and joyful!

Church Contributions If you are tired of remembering to do a weekly envelope (cash or check) for contributions to the church, consider doing a bill payment out of your bank checking account to the church. You can do this

weekly or monthly. This will help the church’s finance budgets for when you are out of town on the weekends or summers.
