St Bart’s Kids Small Group Session Outline

Main Point: Jesus promises that he will satisfy us, today and forever. Just as water refreshes, following Jesus is what we need. He off ers us life with him forever.

Discussion Questions Read John 4:4-10 from the Bible Story (pages 1-2)

1. Why do you think water tastes amazing after you have been running or busy playing sport? (Water is exactly what your body needs after rigorous exercise. It refreshes us.)

2. How important was water to people living in first century Israel? (It was really important! The countryside was similar to parts of Australia where there were frequent droughts. People then did not have pumps or taps, but needed to go to wells everyday so that they could have enough water to drink and care for their animals. Just like now, water was the source of life.)

3. Why was the woman surprised that Jesus spoke to her? ( Jews and Samaritans did not normally get along. They had different ideas about God. Also, the woman was at the well at the hottest part of the day, so she was probably trying to avoid seeing anyone else.)

Read John 4:11-15 from the Bible Story (pages 3-4)

4. What is the difference between normal water and the water Jesus offers? (Normal water runs out. You need to keep drinking it to be satisfied or to quench your thirst, and you need to keep going to the well everyday to get it - or today you might store it in a dam or a tank. The living water Jesus offers never runs out. If you drink it, you will never be thirsty again.)

5. What does Jesus mean by living water? ( Jesus is the source of all life. When we trust in what Jesus offers, we receive eternal life. This never needs to be topped up or never runs out. Life with Jesus is not Plan B, but is full of joy and goodness, as we follow the only person who can truly satisfy.)

6. Are there other things in your life that you think might be more important than God? (We can be tricked to thinking there are other things that satisfy more than Jesus. It could be getting the best marks at school, being the best soccer player or going on an amazing holiday. But Jesus is even better than the best thing we can imagine!)

Explanation of The Promises Series With so much uncertainty in our lives and world right now, what can we be truly certain of? For what can we be totally sure? In this series we are exploring some of the great promises of Jesus: that he will + save + provide + satisfy + give rest + strengthen + send + reward + prepare + raise. In a world that is weary and pressed, these are promises that we can count on and rejoice in!

7. How can we get the living water Jesus is talking about? (By trusting that Jesus loves us, has died for us, and has risen from the dead. Jesus offers living water to us for free! All we need to do is love, trust and follow him - with the help of God of course.)

Prayer Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that you freely offer life forever with you. Please help us to accept your offer, to love, follow and trust you. We are sorry when we think other things are better than you. Please help us to see that only you satisfy and bring the best of life, today and for forever. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

I will Satisfy 3-4 Jesus left Judea and

went back again to Galilee, travelling through Samaria.

5-6,8 He came to a town in Samaria

called Sychar and stopped at Jacob’s well. The disciples continued into the

town to buy food. But Jesus was tired from the journey. So he sat down by the well. It

was about noon.

7 A woman from Samaria came to get some water. Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 9 The Samaritan woman said to

him, “You are a Jew. I am a Samaritan woman. How can you

ask me for a drink?” She said this because Jews don’t have

anything to do with Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered her, “You do not know what God’s

gift is. And you do not know who ST BART’S KIDS SUNDAY \\ MAY 10, 2020 2

is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would have asked him. He would have given

you living water.” 11 “Sir,” the woman

said, “you don’t have anything to get water with. The well is deep. Where can you get

this living water? 12 Our father Jacob gave us the well. He drank from it himself. So did his sons and his livestock. Are you more

important than he is?” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who

drinks this water will be thirsty again.

give them will never be thirsty. In fact, the water I give

them will become a spring of water in

them. It will flow up into eternal life.”

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water. Then I will never be thirsty. And I

won’t have to keep coming here to get

water.” John 4:4-15
