St Bart’s Kids on Sundays Children’s Ministry Package WEEK 8 of 12 Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources for crèche (children aged 1-2 years old), preschool (children aged 3 years old), and Sunday school (children in Years Kindy to Year 6). Our Sunday School curriculum focuses upon Biblical literacy and provides opportunities for both multi- age engagement (all-in teaching, games, worship) and small group learning (discussion, prayer, activity). Both our Crèche and Preschool curriculums are play-based in nature and allow children to learn about the focus Bible passage in a variety of modes - be it role play, discovery, games, art, music, and more. How to structure a Kids Program Having a clear and consistent structure each week, will help your children get the most out of this curriculum. We have found it necessary to structure in elements such as settling in time (for early years) and small group discussions (Sunday School) to help children build connections with each other and the team. Games (Sunday School) have been strategically placed before the small group time so that children have an opportunity to run and move before being asked to sit in a circle, listen, and participate in discussions. Similarly, we use morning tea (Crèche and Preschool only) as a great way to focus the children so they can listen to the story and main message of the day (little people generally love to eat quite frequently so it also helps keep them happy!). The songs we use for worship are linked directly to the day’s topic, but are dierent in style to those used in Church. We have found the children love to use their whole body when their worship, so we dance, do actions, and have a wonderful time singing. St Bart’s Kids on Sundays Children’s Ministry Package • WEEK 8 of 12

Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources for crèche (children aged 1-2 years old), preschool (children aged 3 years old), and Sunday school (children in Years Kindy to Year 6).

Our Sunday School curriculum focuses upon Biblical literacy and provides opportunities for both multi-age engagement (all-in teaching, games, worship) and small group learning (discussion, prayer, activity).

The songs we use for worship are linked directly to the day’s topic, but are different in style to those used in Church. We have found the children love to use their whole body when their worship, so we dance, do actions, and have a wonderful time singing.

How to Use We would love to see children and families growing as disciples of Jesus - so please feel free to use any of these resources at your church, school or at home. To use these materials,

• Think about the age ranges of your children, and how you could best arrange groups for discussion and activities.

• Download the year level required. If you are a family or from a smaller children’s ministry setting, we would advise you look through this week’s resources and aim for a year level roughly in the middle of the ages present in your family/church. There is a summary Teaching Table at the end of this document that may help guide your choice.

You will find most of these resources can be adapted to groups of varied sizes, albeit with some creativity!

This is a free, printable resource, available via download. Multiple copies can be made to resource your family or church. We do ask however, that you don’t upload these resources on your own webpage.

For further information Please contact us on [email protected] if you require any more information regarding our Children’s Ministry resources.

Games (K-P) ‘The Money and the Key’

LINK: We are all given special gifts. Do we use those gifts or do we hide them?

Have all of the children sit in a circle, facing inwards, with their hands behind their backs, opened. One child is to remain standing, outside the circle, holding a coin and a key. The group sings this song and the child with the coin walks around the outside of the circle, quietly leaving the key in one child’s hand and the coin in the other. They must be seated back in the circle before the end of the song. The song finishes with a call and response of ‘who has the money’ and ‘who has the key’.

The music score for this can be found at https://musescore.com/user/24296/scores/42604

Games (1-6) ‘Talent Challenge’ relay

Link: We are all given talents. Some of us are good at different things to others. We can choose to use our gifts or to store them up for ourselves.

Play this game as a challenge for teams (or individually if you are playing as a family).

Have each member have a water bottle (disposable is best) that is half full of water and sealed tightly. Have them hold the bottle and flip it in the air and try and get it to land right way up on the table/surface. They continue to have multiple turns until they get it landing the correct way.

Once they have flipped it, they take a coin and place it into a jar/money box and the next person has a turn.

See who can collect the most amount of coins at the end of the game (feel free to set a time limit for the game).

St Bart’s Kids

Small Group Session Outline

Main Point: Jesus wants us to use everything he has given us (our skills, time, friendships and money), to love him and love each other.

Discussion Questions

Read Matthew 25:14-18 in the NIrV Bible (pages 1199)

1. What do each of the servants do with the gold they had been given? (The one with five bags of gold uses the money strategically and doubles it. The second servant also doubles the two bags. The third servant buries his money.)

2. The servants all received different amounts. Do you think God gives everyone in the world the same skills, interests and friends? (No - we are all different. Christians around the world live in different places, enjoy doing different activities and have different friends. This is a good thing. Jesus doesn’t look at what we have, but rather what we do with it.)

Read Matthew 25:19-30 in the NIrV Bible (page 1199-1200)

3. How did the master respond to the first two servants? What did he say? (The master was very happy with both servants and how they used what they had been given. He praised them saying “You have done well, good and faithful servant!” Because both had been faithful, the master was going to trust them with more.)

4. What did the master think of the servant who buried his money? (He was very angry at how lazy the servant was. He was not angry because the servant only started with one bag of gold, but he was angry because he did nothing with it.)

Explanation of the Gospel of Matthew Series

In this series leading up to Easter, we’ll be exploring Jesus’ climatic final days before going to the cross. Having finished his ministry in Galilee, Jesus is welcomed into Jerusalem to the shouts of “Hosanna!” (meaning - “save us”!) by some, whilst others oppose, resist, and ultimately seek to kill him. But whilst many plot for his demise, Jesus teaches of coming judgment, the danger of hypocrisy, and that he is the only one in whom salvation is to be found.

YEAR 6

Page 6: St Bart’s Kids on Sundays · Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources

5. In this parable, the servants are given money - but this is not the only thing God gives us. Together as a group, draw two columns. On one column, brainstorm on the whiteboard all the different type of things God gives us to use. (For example: activities you enjoy doing or are good at, fruit of the spirit you are good at: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.)

6. What do you think Jesus wants us to do with the skills, time & friendships he has given us? (To use them! If we do nothing with them, we are like the servant who buried the money.)

7. In the second column, brainstorm together how you can use each gift from God to follow him or love others. (e.g. Good at soccer = encourage team mates, train diligently, demonstrate fairness and how to handle victory and loss. Good at kindness = look out for what other people might need, encourage your teacher or help with the chores.)

** We have developed a resource that might be helpful for Question 7. This can be used as a discussion prompt or as a match activity. There is also blank space for additional ideas on how to use our gifts for God. See the activity instructions that go with the ‘Working Hard for the Lord’ resource.

Group Activity Gifts from God Link: Just like the servants, we have all been given different and special gifts from God to use to follow him.

1. Give each child a “gift” to write their name on. Ask each person to think about which gift they have (the whiteboard might be helpful to think through this.) Write the gift on one side and then how they were going to use it on the other.

2. Cut out strips of different wrapping paper for the ribbon and glue onto the gift.

3. Leader: on a second ‘gift’ card, please make a copy of each child’s gift (using a sharpie). This way we can display the copies on the wall to celebrate all the different gifts St Bart’s Kids has & how they are going to use them. The original ones can be sent home with the children, to be displayed on their fridge/wall/bookmark.

Prayer Dear Gracious Father, thank you for all of the gifts you give us. Thank you that in Jesus we are all perfectly valued and loved. Through your Holy Spirit, please help us to see how we can use what you have given to us to follow and trust you, and love one another. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
