St Bart’s Kids on Sundays Children’s Ministry Package WEEK 11 of 12 Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources for crèche (children aged 1-2 years old), preschool (children aged 3 years old), and Sunday school (children in Years Kindy to Year 6). Our Sunday School curriculum focuses upon Biblical literacy and provides opportunities for both multi- age engagement (all-in teaching, games, worship) and small group learning (discussion, prayer, activity). Both our Crèche and Preschool curriculums are play-based in nature and allow children to learn about the focus Bible passage in a variety of modes - be it role play, discovery, games, art, music, and more. How to structure a Kids Program Having a clear and consistent structure each week, will help your children get the most out of this curriculum. We have found it necessary to structure in elements such as settling in time (for early years) and small group discussions (Sunday School) to help children build connections with each other and the team. Games (Sunday School) have been strategically placed before the small group time so that children have an opportunity to run and move before being asked to sit in a circle, listen, and participate in discussions. Similarly, we use morning tea (Crèche and Preschool only) as a great way to focus the children so they can listen to the story and main message of the day (little people generally love to eat quite frequently so it also helps keep them happy!). The songs we use for worship are linked directly to the day’s topic, but are dierent in style to those used in Church. We have found the children love to use their whole body when their worship, so we dance, do actions, and have a wonderful time singing. Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources for crèche (children aged 1-2 years old), preschool (children aged 3 years old), and Sunday school (children in Years Kindy to Year 6).

Our Sunday School curriculum focuses upon Biblical literacy and provides opportunities for both multi-age engagement (all-in teaching, games, worship) and small group learning (discussion, prayer, activity).

The songs we use for worship are linked directly to the day’s topic, but are different in style to those used in Church. We have found the children love to use their whole body when their worship, so we dance, do actions, and have a wonderful time singing.

  • How to Use We would love to see children and families growing as disciples of Jesus - so please feel free to use any of these resources at your church, school or at home. To use these materials,

    • Think about the age ranges of your children, and how you could best arrange groups for discussion and activities.

    • Download the year level required. If you are a family or from a smaller children’s ministry setting, we would advise you look through this week’s resources and aim for a year level roughly in the middle of the ages present in your family/church. There is a summary Teaching Table at the end of this document that may help guide your choice.

You will find most of these resources can be adapted to groups of varied sizes, albeit with some creativity!

This is a free, printable resource, available via download. Multiple copies can be made to resource your family or church. We do ask however, that you don’t upload these resources on your own webpage.

For further information Please contact us on [email protected] if you require any more information regarding our Children’s Ministry resources.

  • Additional Useful Family Resources:

    Making Perfume:

If your kid loves being creative, why not get them to make their own perfume?!

Simply gather a jar, a nice bottle, scissors, water, things to decorate the bottle, and then head outside to forage in the garden for some herbs and flowers. This website shows how creative some kids have been in creating their own scents. http://mericherry.com/2017/03/28/making-perfume-with-kids/

Activities: • Teach your kids how to flip a coin, using their thumb.

    • Hide 30 coins in your backyard. Send your children out to see if they can find them all.

    Worship:

Set aside some time this week where you can listen to a range of worship together as a family. Listen carefully to the words - which songs help reflect where your heart is with God? Sing along (perhaps even dance!) and give God everything you have during this moment.

Some great family friendly worship resources can be found on Spotify. Check out some of these:

  • St Bart’s Kids Small Group Session Outline

Main Point: How our heart trusts Jesus is important. Today we see two responses to Jesus - love and worship, and jealousy and greed. Which side are you on?

Discussion Questions 1. We are getting closer and closer to Easter! What the the one thing you are most excited by at Easter time?

Read Matthew 26:1-5 in the Prep Bible folder (page 1)

    2. Jesus talks to his disciples and warns about what is about to happen. What does he say? ( Jesus warns the disciples that he will be given/arrested and be nailed to a cross to die.)

    3. Who wanted Jesus dead? (The Chief Priests and the elders didn’t like Jesus at all - they want to get rid of him because Jesus created trouble for them.)

Read Matthew 26:6-13 in the Prep Bible folder (pages 2-3)

    4. What is your favourite toy? Would you give it away?

    5. When Jesus was visiting the home of a man named Simon, a woman came and gave an unusable gift to Jesus. What was it and what did she do? (The woman came and brought a brand new, expensive bottle of perfume to Jesus, of which she poured onto his head.)

    6. Why do you think she did this? (The woman knew how important Jesus was and pouring the perfume over him was one way to offer something special to him. We don’t do this nowadays - but back in Jesus’ time this was an amazing thing to do! It would be like giving your favourite toy to someone else to show them how much you love them.)

    Bible Focus Matthew 26:1-16

    Theme Focus Study of Contrasts

Explanation of the Gospel of Matthew Series In this series leading up to Easter, we’ll be exploring Jesus’ climatic final days before going to the cross. Having finished his ministry in Galilee, Jesus is welcomed into Jerusalem to the shouts of “Hosanna!” (meaning - “save us”!) by some, whilst others oppose, resist, and ultimately seek to kill him. But whilst many plot for his demise, Jesus teaches of coming judgment, the danger of hypocrisy, and that he is the only one in whom salvation is to be found.

    YEAR P

  • 7. Why were the disciples so angry with what the woman did? (The disciples thought what the woman did was wasteful. Normally anointing someone with oil didn’t mean tipping the whole jar out. Plus the oil she used would have cost A LOT of money. They thought that money would have been better spent giving it to the poor).

Read Matthew 26:6-13 in the Prep Bible folder (pages 4)

    8. What was the name of the disciple who betrayed Jesus? ( Judas)

    9. What did he get for giving Jesus to the Chief Priests? (30 silver coins.)

10.Who did Judas love more - Jesus or money? (Money. This is so sad, because Judas was one of Jesus’ disciples. He would have spent a lot of time with Jesus - travelling, eating, seeing Jesus’ miracles, hearing his teaching and getting to talk directly to Jesus. And yet, he was willing to betray Jesus for money.)

11.If we love Jesus, how should we act when …

    • Our brother asks to borrow our toy? (Share it)

    • Someone is sad? (Encourage them, give them a hug, ask if they are ok)

    • When we want to thank Jesus? (We can sing, dance or pray!)

    • When we want to show how special Jesus is to us? (We can pray to Jesus,

    Group Activity Jigsaw Puzzle

Link: People respond to Jesus in lots of different ways. Talk about the three groups of people - how did the Chief Priests, the woman with perfume and Judas follow Jesus.

    1. Print out both sheets of paper.

    2. Cut out pieces on “Jigsaw Pieces”.

    3. Fit them and glue them onto the base.

Prayer Dear God, thank you that Jesus came and was willing to be the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of many. Help us to be extravagant with our love for Jesus, just like the lady who poured perfume on Jesus’ head. May we not just know about Jesus, but may we grow in our love for him, everyday. Amen.

  • The Plot to kill Jesus Jesus said to his disciples,

2 “The Passover Feast is two days away. The Son of Man

will be handed over to be nailed

    to a cross.”

3-5 Then the chief priests met and made plans to arrest Jesus

secretly. They wanted to kill him, but were afraid to do

anything during the feast as “the people might stir

    up trouble.” ST BART’S KIDS SUNDAY \\ APRIL 5, 2020 1

  • A Woman Pours Perfume on Jesus 6 Jesus was in Bethany, at the home of Simon the

leper. 7 A woman came to Jesus with a special sealed jar of very

expensive perfume and she poured it on his head.

8 The disciples saw this and became angry. “What waste!” 9“The

perfume could have been sold at a high price and

the money given to the poor.”

  • 10 Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to them,

“Leave this woman alone. She has done a beautiful thing. 11 You

will always have poor people with you, but you will not always

    have me.

12 She poured the perfume on my body to prepare me to be

buried. 13 What she has done will be shared, wherever

the good news is preached all

    over the world.”

  • Judas Betrays Jesus 14Judas, one of the 12 disciples,

    went to the chief priests.

15 “What will you give me if I hand Jesus over to you?” he asked

So they counted out 30 silver coins for him.

16 Then Judas watched for the right time to hand Jesus over
