Gospel of Mark Cards
Each week, we are going to learn a bit more about who Jesus is. In the set of cards, there are 4 cards that relate to each week (2 duplicates). Can you find them? Using the stand, you could display one of the cards each week to remember, or even use the cards to play a game of snap or memory.
ST BART’S KIDS SUNDAY
FORGIVER
Jesus was telling people about God.
There was a lot of people around him
listening.
Four people brought their friend to Jesus.
Their friend could not
walk.

EARLY CHILDHOOD
There were too many people for them to get
close to Jesus.
So they made a hole in the roof and lowered
the man down on a mat.
Jesus told the man his sins were forgiven.
He told all the people that the Son of Man can
forgive sins.
ST BART’S KIDS on SUNDAYS \\ August 2, 2020 2
Then Jesus told the man to “get up. Take your mat
and go home”.
The man got up, took his mat and walked away.
All the people who were watching were amazed, and they praised God.

FORGIVER
1-2 When Jesus went to Capernaum, many
people came to see him. Jesus
taught them about God.
3 Four men came carrying a man who
could not walk.
4 There were so many people that they
couldn’t get close to Jesus.

So they dug a hole in the roof and put the
man down through the hole on a mat.
5 Jesus saw their faith. So he said to the man,
“Your sins are forgiven.”
6-7 Some Jewish teachers were sitting there and thinking, “why is
Jesus saying that? He’s saying a very
bad thing! Only God can forgive sins!”
ST BART’S KIDS on SUNDAYS \\ AUGUST 2, 2020 2
8 Right away Jesus knew what they were thinking.
So he said to them, “Why are you thinking
these things?
9 Is it easier to say to this man, ‘Your sins are forgiven’? or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’?
10 But I want you to know that the Son of
Man can forgive sins.”

Get up, take your mat
and walk!
So Jesus said to the man who could not walk, 11 “get
up. Take your mat and go home.”
12 The man got up and took his mat. Then he
walked away while everyone watched.
All the people were
amazed. They praised God and said, “We have never seen
anything like this!” Mark 2:1-12

Forgiver Jesus entered
Capernaum where the people heard that he had
come home.
2 So many people gathered that there was no room left, not even
outside the door. And Jesus taught them about God.
3 Four of those who came were
carrying a man who could not walk.

4 But they could not get him close to Jesus because of the crowd. So
they made a hole by digging through the
roof above Jesus. Then they lowered the
man through it on a mat.
5 Jesus saw their faith. So he said to the man,
“Son, your sins are forgiven.”
6 Some teachers of the law were sitting there. They were thinking, ST BART’S KIDS on SUNDAYS \\ AUGUST 2, 2020 2

Get up, take your mat and walk!
10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins.”
So Jesus spoke to the man who could not walk. 11 “I tell you,” he said, “get up. Take
your mat and go home.”
12 The man got up, took his mat and walked.
Everyone was amazed and they praised God
for what they saw. Mark 2:1-12

St Bart’s Kids Small Group Session Outline
Main Point: Jesus forgives sins, and anyone can be forgiven if they trust in him.
Discussion Questions Read Mark 2:1-5 from the Bible Story (page 1)
1. How many people were squeezed into Jesus’ house? (A lot! So many people that no one could come through the door.)
2. Was it easy or hard to bring a man who couldn’t walk to Jesus? (It was hard! The man’s friends went to a lot of effort. They would have carried him up to the top of the roof, dug a hole in the roof (remember the roof was likely flat), and then lowered him down in front of Jesus.)
3. What do you think they were expecting Jesus to do? (Most likely, they thought Jesus would heal the man. Already, Jesus has healed lots of people with all kinds of diseases.)
4. What did Jesus do instead? ( Jesus forgave the man’s sins.)
5. What is forgiveness? (It is when we do something wrong, and rather than getting the punishment we deserve, our action is paid for by someone else. Jesus is the best example of forgiveness. We don’t live perfectly, but Jesus died for us, so that we can live perfectly with God forever.)
Read Mark 2:6-12 from the Bible Story (page 2)
6. Which is more important - that you are healed today, or your sins are forgiven forever? (That our sins are forgiven forever! This is what the man needs the most. Jesus cares about people’s bodies, and he does heal a lot of people, but Jesus is more than just a miracle hospital worker - he has come to heal us from death, the worst sickness of all!)
7. Who has the authority to forgive sins? ( Jesus does. Only God can forgive sins - and Jesus is God. Even the Pharisees can recognise that this is what Jesus is saying.)

Bible Focus Mark 2:1-12
Theme Focus Forgiver
Explanation of the Mark Series The Gospel of Mark is an action-packed account of Jesus’ life. In 16 brief chapters, Mark reports the significant claims and actions of Jesus, giving special attention to the events leading up to his death. Mark shows us that Jesus isn’t just one dimensional, but the fulfilment of the greatest hopes for all of humanity. Over 12 weeks, we’ll be exploring who Jesus is and why he matters to us today. This will help us to answer: Who do you say that I am?

8. Were the Pharisees happy or angry that Jesus’ forgave the man’s sins? (They believed he was doing something evil - claiming to do something only God can do. They did not believe Jesus was God.)
9. Have you ever needed to forgive someone? Was it easy or hard? (Forgiveness is hard. It is not just forgetting about something wrong that has happened. Jesus paid for our forgiveness by dying for us. Because Jesus has done all the hard work, he will help us forgive people who have wronged us.)
Prayer Dear Gracious Father, thank you that Jesus is the Forgiver. That he has the power and the authority to forgive. We are sorry when we forget you. Please help us to love you, follow you, forgive others - just as you have forgiven us. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
