MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL has been offered for Vada Holscher, Mary Lou Griffiths and Mrs. Ruth Haft. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.

May 13th 2018 Greetings in the name of the Lord: This coming Sunday, we will celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost; the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Church as the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles are gathered in the upper room. The Holy Spirit empowered the first disciples to go forth and share the Good News of Jesus Christ. For us here at St. Antoninus, this is also a double celebration. Our own Deacon Jacob Willig will be ordained a priest for our Archdiocese of Cincinnati and become Father Jacob Willig. He, too, will go forth to share the Good News. The Ordination Mass will be Saturday, May 19th, 2018, at 11:00 am at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains. Father Willig’s first Mass of Thanksgiving will be here at St. Antoninus Sunday, May 20th, at 1:30 pm. Please note that the 11:30 am Mass is being moved to 1:30 pm. In anticipation of Pentecost and the Ordination of Father Jacob Willig. We will add confessions on Monday evening, May 14th, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. On Friday, May 18th, we will have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament the entire day for vocations in the chapel. At 7:00 pm, we will have a special Holy Hour for Vocations in the church until 8:00 pm, with exposition and benediction. Confessions will also be heard from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Please join us in prayer during this special, graced time for our parish and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Yours in Christ: Fr. Haft

A message from Father Haft and family: Thank you to everyone for your prayers, sympathy, kind words and cards as we mourn the death of our Mom, Ruth Haft. May she rest in peace. Yours in Christ: Ray Haft and Fr Ron Haft

Reading I: Acts of the Apostles 1:1-11: The first verse refers to a “first book” which is the Gospel of Luke (Luke

is the author of Acts) which may imply that Acts was written shortly after the third Gospel. Verses 1-5 mentions

the last events of Jesus’ life on earth: the appearances of the risen Christ and His ascension into heaven. The

apostles ask Jesus if this is the time He will restore the kingdom of Israel. This question shows that the apostles

are still thinking in terms of earthly restoration of the Davidic dynasty. St. John Chrysostom thought this

question by the apostles makes clear that they did not understand the nature of the Kingdom. Jesus tells them

that the Kingdom is mysterious in character and comes when it is least expected. A cloud takes Jesus out of

sight, a sure sign, according to St. John Chrysostom, that Jesus had already entered heaven. The Ascension is so

important in our own redemption. St. Pius V wrote that Jesus’ ascension is one of the actions by which Jesus

redeems us from sin and gives us the new life of grace. The ascension is the climax of Christ’s exaltation, which

was achieved in the first instance by His passion and resurrection. He ascended not only to possess the throne

of glory and the kingdom which He has inherited by His blood, but also to attend to whatever regards our

salvation. The angels, speaking to the apostles in verse 11, tell the apostles that Jesus will come again. They are

telling the apostles and us that we should wait with confidence for His return.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9 (6): Psalm 47 is a psalm to the Lord of Israel, king over all the earth.

It is in the temple that the people are invited to praise the God of Israel as king of all the earth; for that is where

His whole throne, the ark, is (verse 8). Verse 5 of this psalm is not included in the reading for Mass: “God has

gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of the trumpet”. In the apostolic age, the Church saw the words

of this verse as being fulfilled in the ascension of Christ into heaven. This psalm later came to be used on the

feast of the Ascension with the Church professing her faith in Christ as king of all the universe. By proclaiming

this, the Church helps all nations to attain their destiny.

Reading II: There are two options for the second reading. At the time this column was written, it was unclear

which passage would be read. Ephesians 1:17-23: The God, whom St. Paul addresses, is God the Father who

revealed Himself through Christ, and to whom Jesus Himself, as a man, prays and asks for help. The apostles

are in awe at the marvels which God’s power has worked in Jesus Christ; he sees Christ as the source and model

of our hope. The fact that the risen Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father does not imply position or

posture of the body, but expresses the firm and permanent possession of royal and supreme power and glory,

which He received from the Father. Paul describes the Church, the body of Christ, as His “fullness”. What he

means is that through the Church, Christ becomes present in, and fills, the entire universe extending to it the

fruits of His redemptive activity. Ephesians 4:1-13: These verses are an appeal to maintain the unity of the

Church in the face of obstacles; even obstacles within the Church. He also warns about the danger of being led

astray by heretical ideas. St. Paul teaches that the Church’s unity is grounded on the oneness of God, and that

Christ acts with full authority in the buildup of His body through its various ministries and the members’

solidarity.

Gospel: Mark 16:15-20: Our passage from Mark finds Jesus commissioning His disciples to be His witnesses.

People who believe and are baptized will be saved. Jesus is not just addressing this commission to His disciples,

He is commissioning us as well. For those who believe will experience God’s power in their lives in dramatic

ways (verse 17). Continued on the next page...

BREAKING OPEN THE WORD with Kathy O’Connor SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Continued from the previous page..

In verse 18, we are not being encouraged to pick up snakes or to drink poison to prove one’s faith; it is rather a

promise of protection for Christians who encounter deadly perils. Those who believe will be able to carry on the

healing ministry of Jesus which was entrusted to the original apostles and carried out by the early Church. How

can we carry out the healing ministry of Christ? By being His witnesses to others who maybe don’t know Jesus.

After this commissioning, Jesus was taken up into heaven. Just because Jesus is seated at the right hand of God

in heaven doesn’t mean that He is removed from the affairs of this earth. It is just the opposite: from His

position of power, Jesus is able to empower those who witness to Him. It began with the original apostles and

continues down through history to us.

Reflection: Jesus knows that, at times, it will be hard for us to carry out this mission, so He promises to

accompany our faith with signs that will “confirm” the Gospel that we hear and pass on. These signs have never

been lacking in the Church at large and even in our own lives. These signs are the consistent and dependable

sacred signs of the sacraments: quiet and refreshing moments in front of the Tabernacle; strength and

consolation from Holy Communion; deep and liberating peace after every confession. Our own experience of

the risen Lord, who never fails us, should move us to bring others closer to Him just as the apostles were

moved. Christ has been faithful, fulfilling His promise: the signs are abundant. Have we learned to read them?

Perhaps we might explore more deeply the signs in our own lives by reflecting on the following to guide us: 1)

has Jesus commissioned me to be His witness despite my doubts and confusions, 2) what are the signs of God’s

power at work in my life, 3) how have I experienced God’s protection in my life.

St. Antoninus Festival Volunteer Form June 8, 9 & 10

Please return this form to let the festival coordinators know if you can or cannot volunteer.

The summer festival is fast approaching, and we need many, many volunteers to make this year a success. This event is the Athletic Club’s major fundraiser, and they are asking for your participation. If you have a child playing a sport(s) at St. Antoninus, please consider committing in some capacity to working the festival. This is a great opportunity to give back to our school/ parish while having fun at the same time. The benefits from this major fundraiser help offset various expenses facing the Athletic Club. How can you help? Please let us know what you are interested in working by checking the spaces below. The coordinators will be reaching out to you with more information once it gets closer to the festival. We are appreciative of all those volunteering to make the festival a success. THANK YOU!!! Need only one per family. Any questions, please reach out to Jason Corcoran ([email protected]), or Brian Downey ([email protected]).
