F r o m t h e R C I A This past week we explored salvation history. It is not just an ancient story in the Bible. It is an ancient story, but it is our story even today. We learned about creation, the fall, sin, and redemption as well as the many covenants God made with us throughout history. Finally, we learned just how important it is to get to know Jesus and have a relationship with Him. Our next topic is to further explore just who Jesus is. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. Come, join us!

We are blessed and excited to have

added the Advanced Math Program at

St. Antoninus. Courses for grades 5-8 are

other than

learning and understanding the

material, is for students to

Reading I: Deuteronomy 6:2-6: Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible) and it recounts the main events at the end of the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering in the desert under the leadership of Moses. In the preceding chapter, Moses communicates the Ten Commandments to the Israelites as they prepare for the promised land. The gift of God’s written law prefigures the Incarnate Word of God (Jesus) and the law will guide the people collectively and each individual member of the Chosen people to the promised land. The promised land itself prefigures eternal life in heaven. Moses exhorts the Israelites to remain faithful to the God of Israel. Other nations had many false gods but Israel has one God whom they are to love with all their hearts, souls, and minds. God is asking Israel for its love. What God asks of Israel and also of us today is not a warm, fuzzy feeling as love is commonly understood to be. Rather, love is an act of the will thus, we are to love God not only with our hearts and souls but with our minds. Jesus will later quote verses 4 & 5 when identifying the first and most important of the commandments (Mt 12:29-30).

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51 (2): Psalm 18 is a psalm of David when he was rescued from the hand of his enemies and from the grasp of Saul, the king of Israel at the time, who was seeking to kill him. The psalm opens with a description of God’s might which runs counter to our perception of a God of love and peace. However, the idea David is conveying here is this: when people are overwhelmed by the circumstances of life and they fear they will not be able to survive, the thought of a powerful God who will overcome such obstacles can be comforting and encouraging. The psalm ends praising God for deliverance, for though it may have been the psalmist who brought justice to those who had attacked without cause, the victory was really God’s, for the psalmist would never have been able to succeed or endure without divine assistance.

Reading II: Hebrews 7:23-28: In this passage, the author is addressing the eternal nature of Christ’s priesthood. Every priest is established as a mediator between God and men. Christ’s priesthood is an expression of His love, from which it cannot be separated; since His love is everlasting, so too is His priesthood. Jesus’ priesthood is everlasting because it is linked to the Incarnation, which is something permanent. Secondly, because His mission is that of saving all men in all periods of history, and not one of helping them by His teaching and His example. Thirdly, because Christ continues to be present in the prayer of the Church and especially in the Eucharist. Christ not only interceded for people living while He was on earth; He continues to make intercession for us from heaven.

Gospel: Mark 12:28-32: Our passage from Mark for Mass this weekend finds Jesus being confronted and challenged by religious leaders. The scribes are trying to trip Jesus up; looking for some way to arrest and neutralize Him. So one of the scribes asks a rather cunning question: which is the first of the commandments? In response, Jesus recites verse 5 from our reading from Deuteronomy. The scribe would have been quite familiar with the quote from Deuteronomy. Jesus repeats words that Moses spoke: we are to love God with all our hearts, souls, and minds. Then, He raises the bar on our love for God: we are to love Him also with all our strength! Jesus is telling us to throw our whole being into loving God. This first commandment is breathtaking in what it demands of us, but if we do a reality check in terms of our belief, if God is God, how else can we properly respond to Him? Jesus then phrases the second commandment in terms of loving one’s neighbor. Who is considered our neighbor? It relates back to the first commandment. When Jesus joins the second commandment to the first, prefaced by the statement that “the Lord our God is Lord alone”, He provides the grounds for enlarging the definition of neighbor. If there is only one God, then God is the God of all (whether they recognize God or not). If there is only one God, then every human being, having been created by God is our neighbor. Jesus says there is no other commandment greater than these. Why would He say such a thing? Because if we love God with all our minds, souls, heart, and strength as well as loving our neighbor as ourselves, nothing but good will flow from that. The scribe who asked this question of Jesus actually understands what Jesus is communicating which is why Jesus tells him he was “not far from the kingdom of God”. Continued from the previous page.. Reflection: There are so many points to be made in the readings this weekend, it is not possible to explore them all! But, an overpowering message in these readings is love. God is love and if we truly love God as Jesus tells us to, that love will flow into love for our neighbors. But we live in a world that has, in many ways, given up on God. The sheer number of religions and denominations and their inability to agree on doctrines has created a cynical indifference to God in the secular world. Seculars do agree on the importance of loving one’s neighbor, tolerance, diversity, inclusiveness, and random acts of kindness. Yet, they miss the point. Can we really have these traits and live our lives according to them if we are not connected to the reason why our neighbor should be loved? If we don’t love the God in whose image our neighbors are created, how long and how deeply can we love our neighbors? In the last few weeks we have seen bombs sent to people through the mail and we have seen a mass shooter killing people in a synagogue because he did not like Jews. We recently had a mass shooting in our own city. How will our world ever get back on track? Is it even possible to get it back on track? With God all things are possible but not always easy. But, it must begin with us. If we do as Jesus told the scribe: love God with all our hearts, minds, souls, and strength in addition to loving our neighbor, perhaps we can be an example for others to follow. Perhaps this week we might reflect on the following: 1) How do I love God; how much do I love God and what does the first commandment demand of me; 2) Whom has God entrusted to my love; what do I do out of love for them; 3) How do I understand the linkage between love of God and love of neighbor; how do I experience this linkage in my life; are there boundaries on my love? Lord, help us to really understand that all our neighbors are created by you and loved by you. Make our hearts overflow with love. You have called us to be your apostles, now please make us what you want us to be.
