We NEED YOUR HELP to do this. If you can donate a couple of hours per month to help us in this effort we would like to hear from you! It takes all of us to keep our beautiful school and church campus clean and

Get a group of family and friends together to “adopt” an area of the Church or school to take care of. For example trimming bushes, weeding area gardens, picking up litter, etc. This would be a great “service” project for our students and high school students. PLEASE call Mark Braunstein at 205-5520 or email: [email protected] and add your name to our list of volunteers as a member of the SAINT JOSEPH’S CREW!

As October is a month dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, we will honor her by learning about the only Marian apparition that took place in the USA that is approved by the Catholic Church. In October 1859, Our Blessed Mother appeared to Adele Brise three times by her home near Green Bay, Wisconsin. A National Shrine to Our Lady of Good Help has been built on the apparition site. Please join us this Tuesday evening at 7 PM in the Chapel as we learn about Mary’s visit to our country. All are welcome.

Reading I: Wisdom 7:7-11: The Old Testament for Mass this weekend, is taken from the second part of the book of Wisdom, in which the nature and role of wisdom is discussed. The sacred writer of this passage is implicitly identifying himself with Solomon. In Old Testament tradition, Solomon was seen as the epitome of the wise man, however, he was not born wise. As the writer says in verse 7, he prayed and pleaded to be granted wisdom. He valued wisdom above all things, riches and treasures included. A familiar theme in wisdom writings is the superiority of spiritual things over material things. In this passage, several comparisons make just that point: wisdom is better than everything, even physical health; beauty, priceless gems and all gold. Wisdom is valued because it leads one to know God. In the Gospel passage for this weekend, Jesus will also address the need for wisdom over worldly goods.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 90: 12-13, 14-15, 16-17 (14): Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses, and is an entreaty to God who is holy and everlasting. This is the only psalm attributed to Moses, perhaps because, in the opening verses, he makes reference to the creation of man from the dust of the earth. In the opening verses the psalmist bemoans the shortness of life and of the many pitfalls and setbacks encountered on the journey. He has a difficult time making sense of it all. Yet, the psalmist focuses on the protection provided by the Lord. Those who have recourse to the Lord will receive divine help through the angels to cope with difficulty. The forcefulness with which this psalm describes the protection God, afford to those who seek Him, can be seen from the fact that the words in verses 11 & 12, are quoted by the devil when he tempts Jesus by urging Him to throw Himself off the pinnacle of the temple. The psalm makes it clear that God responds to the trust that man places in Him.

Reading II: Hebrews 4:12-13: The word of God mentioned in the text is presented as an expression of God’s power: it is that active word which creates everything out of nothing. God’s word is consoling and life-giving but it also inspires fear in those who try to ignore it. The depths of a person’s heart, our deepest thoughts, attitudes and intentions lie open to God’s all-seeing eye. St. Thomas Aquinas commenting on this passage from Hebrews wrote, “What a person does or thinks is expressed in his actions, but one can never be sure of what motivates his actions. That , however, is never hidden from God”.

Gospel : Mark 10:17-30: Our Gospel passage for Mass this weekend finds Jesus continuing His journey, teaching as He travels. He encounters a man who asks how he can enter the kingdom of God. This man’s question is one form of the ultimate question on every person’s heart, even when it is unacknowledged: what is the meaning of life? Jesus reminds the man of several of the Commandments, and the man responds that he has observed those commandments all of his life. He is not boasting but merely responding. Jesus then looks at him with love. Scripture scholars note that Jesus loves all of us but at that particular moment in time He appeared to be filled with a special love for this man. Jesus sees him as a man who has obeyed God’s commands all his life and has come to Him in search of eternal life, and Jesus loves him. Jesus sees that the man is lacking in one thing: what the man is missing is he is not a disciple of Jesus. The Lord tells him to sell everything he has, give to the poor, and to follow Him. If the man sells everything he has and gives the money to the poor, this will make the man dependent on the care of God. But the man went away sad because he had many possessions and to sell them was more than he was prepared to do. Perhaps he failed to notice the look of love in Jesus’ gaze. Jesus then commented on how difficult it is for the wealthy to let go of their wealth and the comfort, security, and status it brings. Jesus is teaching on the dangers of riches, not because wealth is evil in and of itself, but because of the attachment that people develop to it. Jesus’ disciples have given up wealth and in many cases their families to follow Jesus. Jesus is teaching that being a disciple requires a detachment from worldly things. Perhaps this is why the psalmist in the responsorial psalm considered wisdom (the way to God) more precious than any treasure.

Continued from the previous page..

R e f l e c t i o n : The man who encountered Jesus might had felt God calling him to experience a deeper “eternal life” with Him. When he asked Jesus how to do that, the cost was too much. Jesus made if very simple: give your wealth to the poor and become His disciple. Material wealth is not bad in itself; God made the universe and filled it with good things for our use and enjoyment. But because of our fallen nature, we tend to attach ourselves too closely to things. Wealth can give us the illusion of being self- sufficient, of being totally in control of our happiness and our destiny. Very often we seek our happiness in possessions. But that happiness fades quickly and then new possessions must be acquired. It can become a vicious cycle. In spite of our treasures, true happiness remains allusive. The truth always remains that we are dependent upon God for everything: we are fragile and unable to achieve total, lasting fulfillment by ourselves. St. Augustine wrote that our hearts are restless until they rest in God. Jesus offered the wealthy young man a chance at authentic happiness, but the young man didn’t see the opportunity for what it was. Those who give up their material attachments will be rewarded both in the present and in the world to come. The heart that is detached from things, is freer to love others and to become who we are meant to become. Perhaps this week we might reflect on the following: 1) What must I do to inherit eternal life; has Jesus asked me to give up anything that I am unwilling or unable to relinquish? 2) Am I clinging to anything that won’t fit the needle-eye entrance to the kingdom of God? 3) Is Jesus calling me to leave something behind and follow Him more closely? Lord, help us to hear your voice, help us to be generous, and help us to see the love in your gaze.

The Center also provides many other free services including parenting classes, referrals for professional help including pre-natal care, the Chastity Training program presented in local Catholic schools, and free diapers, formula, and baby supplies to more than 1,000 clients each year. Checks, of course, would be much appreciated (made payable to PCW). The filled bottles can be placed in a marked box in the Greeting Room on the weekend of October 20th & 21st. Or drop off at the rectory Monday thru Friday from 8AM to 3PM. Please do not leave bottles in the greeting room. Thank you for your generosity! Archdiocesan Lay Pastoral Ministry Program

now interviewing for Spring Classes Have you ever said, “Someone should start a Scripture Study group.” Or, “Someone should evangelize in our neighborhood!” Or “We have so many elderly housebound parishioners. Someone should organize a visitation team.” Well, you are right! Someone should. Maybe that someone is you. The Archdiocesan Lay Pastoral Ministry Program has educated and formed lay men and women just like you for service to parishes, schools and communities since 1975. We offer graduate and non-degreed options, spiritual and ministerial formation and the opportunity to grow in faith, knowledge and skills. Evening and Saturday classes, flexible components and a great support system allow busy adults to maintain work and family commitments while preparing for new opportunities. Classes are available in Spring of 2019 at the main campus in Mt. Washington and Good Shepherd in Montgomery. All lay students receive a 25% tuition reduction this spring. Call 231-1200 or email [email protected] for info or to set up a personal interview.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, St. Pope John Paul II tried to warn us: “We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has gone through. I do not think that wide circles of American society or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully. We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, the Gospel versus the anti-gospel. This confrontation lies within the plan of Divine Providence; it is a trial which the whole Church must take up.” (Karol Cardinal Wojtyla while visiting America, 1972) With the Gospel of LIFE at our core, we are responsible to stand as a bulwark of defense for the unborn children and their parents. In our support of Prolife Pregnancy Centers, clients will come to know the love of God through us. Hope and not despair. Promises fulfilled to find a safe path forward in LIFE for families. Our prayers are paramount; our collective generosity of service and funds keep the doors open! But our shared mission also needs our VOTES! It is in the BALLOT BOX that we exercise our moral obligation to contain evil wherever possible, working to eradicate it! Select candidates who see this grave evil for what it is: “The moral gravity of procured abortion is apparent in all its truth, if we recognize we are dealing with murder”. (St. Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae) Faith in Action: 1. Prayer and fasting. 2. Sign-up and volunteer to help with elections. 3. Contact Right to Life of Greater Cinti. to help pass out free pro-life ballots called “How the Candidates Stand on Life”. 4. Share your pro-life message through social media. 5. Join others for prayer on the front lines at Planned Parenthood at Forty Days for Life until Nov. 4. Bring your family and your rosary and be part of this powerful, prayerful witness at Planned Parenthood (on Auburn Ave. in Cinti.) Questions? Contact St. A’s Prolife Commission member, Joan at 513-922-0348. Confronting and containing evil. Remember the children when you GO TO VOTE AND WHEN YOU PRAY.
