Nineteen members and friends made the two
hour drive to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit
in Conyers for an enjoyable and informative
day. A guided tour of the museum and a
twenty minute video gave us the history of
"monasticism" in general and this monastery
in particular. We learned about the daily life
of a monk that begins at 3:45 am and
includes study, prayer and work. The work
includes baking fruit cakes, cookies and
fudge, and making stained glass windows to
order. Our group attended the noon prayer
service and enjoyed lunch in the café. The
gift shop and bonsai garden offered unique
items. Some of the bonsai trees were very
old and had four figure prices. The Presby-
terian Men thank Tony Clark for suggesting
and arranging this outing for us.

Pastor’s Corner What a fantastic month of April! To begin, Easter morning worship brought forth
it’s Alleluia’s (and Amens!) as we celebrated the Resurrection of Christ. The very
next day, I, along with 7 other missionaries, carried these Alleluia’s with us north
to Jonesville, VA for a week of service and hard work replacing a porch and door
for a new found friend and sister in Christ. The flowers, too, have sung their own
Alleluia’s with every drop of rain and ray of sunshine. Truly, there is much to be
thankful for here in Cleveland.
This brings me to May--that month that gets kind of lost in the crowd. June and
its luring beachy vacations are so close we can almost feel the sand between our
toes. It is tempting to go ahead and “check out” for the summer. I mean, Easter and it’s grand celebra-
tion is over, school days are being counted down, so, why not? Why not just go ahead and take a few
Sundays off, keep that offering in your wallet so there’s more to be spent on vacation (who doesn’t need
another pair of sunglasses anyway?).
Yeah, May, it’s easy to breeze right through as if it didn’t really exist. But, May, oh May…..I hear you
calling us to something else, to something more.
For starters VBS is returning to FPC. This means lots of planning, lots of excitement, and lots to
do to get ready. Clair Arvold will need all of our help to make ours the best possible.
Then there’s Wednesday nights. We will continue to eat and meet at 5:30. Our schedule for
programs include “Five Things God Uses to Grow Your Faith” as well as the “Stewards of Children”
training to help all of us know how to recognize and react to child sexual abuse. (White County is
so close to reaching a major goal and I want our church to be a part of this movement).
And we cannot forget commitments made. This past month you all should have received a
statement showing where you stand in regards to your financial pledges made last November on
Consecration Sunday. If you are behind, don’t fret---continue to seek God’s guidance as to what
He is calling you to give. And don’t give reluctantly—always give joyfully knowing that each pen-
ny given is going to support the ministry of Jesus Christ. Which means every penny is being
faithfully spent to further the Kingdom of God. We are all so fortunate to be a part of this
wonderful work God has given us. If you have any questions or need to discuss your giving,
please don’t hesitate to give me a call at the office.
Finally, Easter isn’t over!!! That’s right. Every Sunday is an opportunity for us to celebrate the
risen Christ. But more specifically, Easter is actually a season (something Hallmark and WalMart
haven’t figured out yet), running until the Day of Pentecost on May 24th.
So, don’t give in to the temptation of “checking out” in May. It’s still Easter. And we still have the
Ascension to celebrate (show up on May 17th to learn more about why this is important—we’ll be
worshiping outside this day). We still have Pentecost to look forward to. And we still have each other to
be around, to learn from, and to love more and more each day.
May, oh May, I hear you calling………………..
Blessings,
Andy

New Member - Betty Jane (BJ) Willard
We welcome a life long Presbyterian, BJ, to our church family by
transfer from the Helen Presbyterian Church. She served the
Helen church as secretary for the past 18 years and concurrently
as Clerk of the Session for the last 12. BJ is certainly qualified in
those fields after a 30 year career as Administrative Assistant to
the Superintendent of Schools for Martin County, Florida. As a
product of the same county's schools, she claims 42 years of effort
on behalf of that system. BJ and her late husband found White
County in the early 80's as a vacation destination and eventually
parked their motor home here between extended travels around
the country that ultimately touched on every state. She and
husband Dave made their full time home in Cleveland in 1989.
BJ enjoys gardening and is active in the Soque Garden Club. She has been called an "Earth Angel" by
friends for her helping spirit and enjoys playing the harmonica in accompaniment to a friend's
accordion at nursing homes. As she says she has "fully retired", she feels God is calling her to a "new
season" and is looking forward to what He has in store for her here at FPC.

have one already donated and put together and placed it on the field if you would like to check it
out. If you are interested in donating a bench for the field please contact Tony or Becky Clark.

MISSION TEAM NEWS
BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN
First Presbyterian would like to lend support to our local crisis Pregnancy Center, Cleveland Care
Center through a baby bottle campaign. The Baby Bottle Campaign is an easy way we can contribute
to the needs of the Cleveland Care Center. The Cleveland Care Center is funded by donations
alone. The Center desires to help young mothers throughout their pregnancy, with parenting and life
skills while sharing the love and compassion of Christ.
Pick up a baby bottle from the Mission table in Upper Narthex. Each family should fill up a bottle with
coins, dollar bills or a check (make checks payable to FPC and write Cleveland Care in the “for line”)
throughout the month and then return it back to the church by Sunday, May 17, 2015. Each bottle
will have a ticket in it for a drawing, place your name on the ticket and put it in the big baby bottle on
the Mission table. After church on May 17, 2015, we will draw the winning ticket and someone will
receive a special gift. Help us with this painless way to make a difference in the life of families in
need in White County.

DROWN HUNGER IN WHITE COUNTY
Join us for a cook-out lunch and take a celebratory “plunge” into Lake Laceola (plunge is optional,
but we sure will have fun.)
Our goal is for at least 300 community members, civic organizations, or groups to pledge $260 for
the next school year (2015-2016). Please consider donating for the 2015-2016 school year and
challenging a friend to do the same. Invite a friend to join us on May 2nd at Lake Laeola.

7 MAY 2015 THE VIEW from Presbyterian Hill
A team of eight “missionaries” led by Pastor
Andy Chambers spent a week in southwest
Virginia rebuilding part of an old farm house to
make it “safer, warmer, drier” for the woman
who lives there with her dogs and cats. The
group was made up of members and friends of
First Presbyterian Church of Cleveland and
worked under the auspices of the Appalachian
Service Project (ASP) which provided the
project and fed and housed the team. ASP has
been operating since 1969 and has repaired
over 16,000 homes in Kentucky, North
Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West
Virginia. In spite of mostly wet weather the
group of six adults and two young people
removed and replaced a large back porch and
installed a larger, new front door that was
previously unable to be used. All the
participants came home tired but with a spirit
of satisfaction gained from serving others and
learning new skills. They also made a new
friend with someone hundreds of miles away in
a remote “holler” in the poorest county in
Virginia. All eight are ready to go again and
were assured that another trip will be planned.
The church has been doing local projects on a
smaller scale for those that don’t have the
means, either physical or financial, to keep
their homes “safer, warmer, drier”.
