RATESTIMONASTERY

Initially certified on the 6 of May 1634 as a monastery for monks, today is a monastery for

nuns

The entrance, a majestic portal with large forged iron gatesis followed by an alley at the end of which

one can see the belfry

In the middle of beautiful clearing is the big church “The Holy Trinity” surrounded by 14

cottages, each with its own architecture

The painting of the church was performed in 1843-1884 by Nicolae Theodorescu helped by his nephew Gheorghe

Tattarascu. The last restauration took place in 1997

The monastery has also a museum, where one can find valuable objects of cult and 17-century-old muniments

The nuns here did not limit themselves only to contemplative life. The monastery has a long tradition

of weaving, their carpets being true works of art.

Following the principal that life and death are part of human existence, the monastery has its own

cemetery. Moreover, what gives it special status is the fact that it has also an ossuary, making it the second in a row of two, together with “Neamt Monastery”.

As any monastery should, RATESTI also was for the local people a spiritual refuge in rough times, and a

confort for wondering souls in search of faith.
