2016  Beverly  Event  – Sacramento,  California.  From  left  to  right:  Taylor  Rhoan,  Kate  Kempton,  Ian  Wieland,  Don  Maddy,  Bettelu Beverly,  Sarah  Hayes,  Matt  Wainwright,  Josh  Dowell,  Kaitlyn Sims,  and

Blake  Zante.

A  note  from  the  Director…

Since  2001,  we  have  provided  more  than  400  legislative  intern  scholarships.    Many  of  our  alumni  have  gone  on  to  become  Valley  leaders  in  politics,  government,  law  and  business.    And  there  is  no  question  that  our  more  recent  alumni  will  continue  to  contribute  to  this  impressive  track  record.    Indeed,  we  now  have  five  times  as  many  applicants  as  scholarship  recipients,  making  the  Maddy  Institute  Legislative  Intern  Scholarship  Program  among  the  most  rigorous  in  the  State  university  system.

With  your  support,  our  legislative  interns  have  had  the  good  fortune  to  work  in  19  federal  and  state  legislative  offices,  both  Democrat  and  Republican,  learning  firsthand  about  how  to  get  things  done  through  the  political  process.    They  have  worked  in  local  legislative  offices  throughout  the  Valley  with  the  support  of  the  Maddy  Associates,  at  the  State  Capitol  in  Sacramento  through  the  Bob  Beverly  Scholarship  Program  and  in  Washington,  D.C.  through  the  Jim  Costa  Scholarship  Program.

We  hope  these  quarterly  newsletters  confirm  how  much  your  support  means  to  our  interns  and  how  that  support  is  helping  build  a  better  Valley,  State  and  Nation.

We  also  hope  you  take  pride  in  knowing  that  your generosity  is  making  their/our success  possible.

With  Appreciation,

Executive  Director  – The  Maddy  Institute

As  you  will  see  from  the  following  pages,  the  promise  of  the  Maddy  Institute’s  Legislative  Intern  Programs  – to  train  the  next  generation  of  bi-‐partisan  problems  solvers  – is  becoming  a  reality  thanks  to  your  support.

“The  opportunity  to  intern  at  Congressman  Jim  Costa’s  office  in  Merced  was  an  opportunity  to  discover  what  government  work  is  all  about.   I  began  my  journey  with  a  curiosity  about  politics  and  government,  only  to  find  that  what  I  fell  in  love  with  is  called  “public  service”  – I  am  a  public  servant.”
