Birth

• Ehrich Weiss (later Harry Houdini) was born in Budapest, Hungary, on March 24 1874.

• In 1876, Rabbi Weiss leaves the family to move to the US.

• In1878, the Weiss family join their father Rabbi Weiss in Wisconsin

Early Life

• Because his family moved so much Ehrich only went to school occasionally.

• He learned to read and write but was not a good speller.

• He started shining shoes and running errands at the age of 8. When he was only 11 his older half brother Herman died at age 22 from tuberculosis (a lung disease).

• At age 12, Ehrich ran away hoping to find work somewhere else. He sent a postcard to his mother stating that he was going to Galveston Texas, and would be home in a year. But he got on the wrong freight train and wound up in Missouri.

• For the next two years he worked odd jobs. Ehrich stayed in touch with his family through letters and when he heard that his father was moving to New York to look for work he joined his father. They both shared a room in a boarding house.

• The rest of the family came from Wisconsin after a few months.

How Houdini was discovered

• In 1899, Harry Houdini was performing at a beer hall in Minnesota. A man (Martin Beck) in the audience challenged him to escape from a pair of handcuffs.

• After the show he and his wife “Bess” had coffee with Martin Beck, he became Houdini’s manager.

• Martin Beck wanted Houdini to focus on escapes instead of the tricks he’d been performing.

Magic Career

• Harry Houdini was a very famous magician, he is known for his escapes.

• He did some escapes wearing handcuffs, straitjackets, chains or ropes.

• Some of Houdini’s escapes were even inside a cell or box.
