IALT & IASW• IALT: Explain the phenomenon of tides (why

they occur) and identify the different types of tides

• IASW: I can…• Create a PowerPoint explaining why tides

happen and give a brief explanation of each type of tide (in my own words).

• Create a visual diagram showing what the earth looks like during high and low tide.

How tides are caused

Tides are caused by the moon and suns gravitational pull.

When the moon rotates around the earth it pulls and pulls until the tide begins to change.

Fact: If you were of a bigger mass and a tiny bit farther off the earth, you would be yanked straight off the earths surface into

space!!

Neap and Spring Tides!!Neap and Spring Tides!!

Spring and Neap tides are created by Spring and Neap tides are created by the Earth and the Moon during each the Earth and the Moon during each lunar month. Spring tides happen lunar month. Spring tides happen just after New and Full Moon, and just after New and Full Moon, and Neap tides happen just after the Neap tides happen just after the Moon is in its First and Third Quarter. Moon is in its First and Third Quarter.

More spring and neap More spring and neap tides!! tides!! • A spring tide actually is not anything to A spring tide actually is not anything to

do with spring??!!do with spring??!!

This sort of tide occurs when the sun and This sort of tide occurs when the sun and moon are in a line! The gravitational moon are in a line! The gravitational pulls of both go towards the tides.pulls of both go towards the tides.

• Neap tides are very weak tides and Neap tides are very weak tides and only occur when the sun and earth are only occur when the sun and earth are perpendicular.perpendicular.

If you are standing at the coast facing the moon there would be a high tide because you are nearer the moon so the gravitational pull would be stronger. Then the low tide would obviously be further from the moon. At any coastal city you would experience the same tide every 12 hours and 25 minutes and 34 seconds and 3.365473638 milliseconds!!

WOW THAT IS SO INTERESTING!!!

The time that it takes to change tides is approximately 6 hours and 12 minutes.

You may use this knowledge in a real life situation such as if you had a boat and wanted to go out for a bit of fishing, you would need to know what the tide was so that it wouldn’t be to much of a hassle.
