la clemenza di TiToSung in English (selected performances captioned)

pUccini mozarTFor years, Mr Fox has defied three blundering farmers – Boggis, Bunce and Bean – by pilfering food for his family from under their noses. Now they have a plan to beat him, involving a hungry digger called Agnes (celebrated mezzo soprano Fiona Kimm). Can Mr Fox be “outfoxed”? Tobias Picker’s wonderful opera does full justice to Roald Dahl’s heroic Mr Fox (exciting young baritone Nicholas Merryweather), along with the gourmandising villain Farmer Bunce, the lonely Hedgehog, and the tipsy philosopher Rita the Rat. ETO’s professional cast, directed by Tim Yealland, will be joined by local groups of schoolchildren at each venue – playing a skulk of fox cubs and a chorus of trees. Opera lovers will relish Picker’s inventive version of Dahl’s exciting classic – perfect for adults and cubs alike!

“I want to see it again and it is the best opera I’ve ever seen in my life!” yoUnG aUdience member

Il tabarro (the cloak) and Gianni Schicchi couldn’t be more different - yet both one hour operas show Puccini as a master of the theatre who speaks to the heart. The highly-charged drama Il tabarro takes place on a barge moored in Paris. Puccini’s haunting masterpiece, with big lyrical roles for soprano (Julie Unwin), tenor (Charne Rochford), and baritone (Simon Thorpe), is justly famous, though not often heard.

Mozart called this his ‘true opera’, referring to its noble subject and its vivid, colourful music. The opera’s hero, Titus, is a compelling portrait of a populist leader who learns the personal cost of political power. When his one friend, Sextus, is corrupted by a tough-minded beauty and driven to an act of terrorism, Titus forgives all, teaching a lesson in mercy as he gives up hope of happiness.

This is a rare chance to see one of Mozart’s ultimate works for the stage - in a striking production by James Conway, with ETO favourites Julia Riley (Anna Bolena), Mark Wilde (The Magic Flute) and Gillian Ramm (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) in leading roles. ETO restores the original sung dialogue, and the opera’s particular dramatic power.

“One of the most dependable pleasures of the operatic year comes when English Touring Opera unpacks its goodies at the start of a new season” The independenT

Gianni Schicchi is a brilliant Florentine comedy. The greedy family of poor, dead Buoso dry their eyes to claim his fortune; however the wily Schicchi (Richard Mosley-Evans) also has his eyes set on the inheritance. In the middle of Liam Steel’s pacy new production comes one of Puccini’s sweetest arias, “O! mio babbino caro” (sung by Paula Sides, ETO’s Pamina, and a star of Handelfest). ETO Music Director Michael Rosewell conducts.

Sung in Italian with English surtitles

“Fantastic Mr Fox is an excellent introduction to opera . . .the score is a moreish cocktail of Britten, Poulenc, foxtrots and klezmer” independenT on sUnday “A wonderful production…

Hurrah to you, the ETO!” aUdience member, commenTinG via oUr websiTe
