The privatisation of the railways in Britain was certainly a boldexperiment. Flying in the face of all historical experience, itsprogenitors were convinced that theintroduction of competition wouldimprove the industry’s efficiencyand levels of service and eliminate

its need of subsidy. The railwayswould cease to be a governmentresponsibility. It has not worked outlike this, yet despite its failings, thebasic structure of the privatisedindustry seems to be unquestioned,even if the reasons for it have beenlargely forgotten. Time for a rethink?

Dr Christopher Young is the Head of the Department of German and Dutch at the University ofCambridge and reader in Modernand Medieval Studies. His primaryteaching and research interestsfocus on the history of Europeanand, in particular, German sport.He has authored several books onGerman literature and culture, themost recent of which explores theGerman national identity at theMunich Olympics in 1972.

The Queen Mary Olympics Lecturesset the 2012 London OlympicGames in their historical context.Building on its expertise and vision,Queen Mary will contribute to themaking of the 2012 Olympic Gamesinto a significant culturalexperience. 21 – 27 March 2011 National Salt Awareness Week - 'Salt and Men's Health'Are you aware that too much salt can damage your health?

This year's National Salt AwarenessWeek, organised by the charityConsensus Action on Salt andHealth (CASH), will raise awarenessabout the health risks of a high saltdiet, particularly amongst men whohave a higher risk than women ofsuffering or dying from preventablediseases such as cardiovasculardisease before the age of 65.

Reducing men’s average salt intake will reduce incidences ofcardiovascular disease which willsave thousands of lives every year.

The week will encourage everyone,especially men, to think about howmuch salt they are eating, to checklabels when shopping and to makemore of their own food at home,while also encouraging the foodindustry to reduce the salt that theyadd to processed foods.
