President’s Message By Dr. Jared Evans

We’re moving...so keep up! I hope this newsletter finds you well. Just as the seasons are chang-ing, we are too and it’s a very exciting time to get involved. First, I would like to personally recognize and thank our delegation for their diligent service in representing us at the WSDA House of Delegates. It was a successful meeting that has laid out the itinerary for WSDA for this year. I’m very happy to extend my congratulations to Dr. Ashley Ulmer, and I hope you will do the same, as the newest member of the WSDA Board of Directors. She had a great campaign and her election was the result of her hard work and the help we gave her as SDDS members. Congratulations and thank you to all! As you read this, the SDDS office has now moved to Liberty Lake. There will be more to come as we prepare to have an Open House. I know this new office will be the perfect facility for our work and I’m ex-cited to start this new chapter for the Spokane District Dental Society and its membership. So now that we’ve moved, the question re-mains…will you keep up? The October Meeting will be one of our most important yet. Social Hour is cancelled. We are getting right down to business at 6:00 p.m..! (You can always stay later to socialize.) I expect a full house for this timely meeting. The CE Hours provided will be relevant and a bargain. (But that’s one of the many benefits of being a member of SDDS.)

Bracken Killpack, WSDA’s Vice President of Government Affairs, will present Health Care Reform: What You Need To Know. He will dis-cuss the changes in store for you as both a dental provider and small business owner under the Affordable Care Act. Following his presen-tation we will have a brief open forum discussion of “Practice Pearls…What we can learn from each other!” Let’s face it; we all have is-sues in our practices. Why not discuss them and get some sage ad-vice from colleagues who have most-likely already “been there and done that.” Sometimes you shouldn’t have to reinvent a wheel. It promises to be insightful, and hopefully something we can build upon in future meetings.

President’s Message continued

Finally, I am asking everyone to bring at least 100 business cards and 50 referral pads for you practices to distribute at the meeting. We are going to have a “Speed Networking Event” following the presentation where we can meet with each and every member present to briefly talk about ourselves and share busi-ness cards and contacts. After the introductions are completed, the meeting will be adjourned and every-one can remain to socialize as long as wanted. At that time, everyone will be able to take the referral pads you need for your office. As a pediatric dentist, I’m always looking for offices to graduate my patients to or I’m constantly asked by parents who I would recommend for them. It’s time to put some faces with the names and some names with the faces.

The most successful dentists are those who belong to the Spokane District Dental Society and we are all invested in the success of our membership. That’s why we’re here; to help each other! We are in this to-gether and I can’t wait to see you on Tuesday, October 8

th at 5:59 p.m.!

Sincerely,

Jared Evans

SCAM Alert!

It has come to our attention that dentists are among

the businesses that a Yellow Pages look-a-like scam

is targeting. If you receive an invoice similar to the

one posted below you should request additional in-

formation from the solicitor and check with your local

Yellow Pages for affiliation. For more information visit

the BBB: http://www.bbb.org/blog/2013/01/yellow-

pages-look-a-like-scams/

RESTORED Adult Dental Medicaid

Thank you to all of our incredible grassroots dentists for

their lobbying efforts to have adult dental Medicaid restored

in the state budget. As a result of their perseverance, adult

dental Medicaid funding will be restored on January 1,

2014! Read more about this legislative victory on the WSDA

blog: http://www.wsda.org/headlines/2013/7/1/victory-state-

legislature-to-restore-adult-dental-medicaid.html

License Fee REDUCTION!

We are proud to announce that as a result

of WSDA's advocacy over the past year,

the Department of Health is proposing a

$176 net reduction in your dental license

renewal fee. Initial license fees are also

expected to drop $175. Formal rule-

making on these fee decreases is ex-

pected to begin shortly. The reduction in

the licensure renewal rate should begin

sometime this fall.

Dear SDDS Member,

The dental care needs in our community are great and as a member of the Spokane District Dental Society, there

are several avenues the Society and the Society’s Foundation has provided for you to serve those in need within

our community.

How can you help?

Volunteer at the IDEA Clinic. All SDDS Members play an instrumental role in the success of the IDEA Clin-

ic. Those patients who may not have received care if it had not been for the IDEA Clinic have expressed

sincere gratitude. Many members who own their own practices, have families and are active in the com-

munity have volunteered their time at the IDEA Clinic. We do our very best to accommodate your sched-

ule and day/time requests to volunteer. We have volunteers who have committed one day each quarter

and then we have those who are in the clinic monthly; every day counts!

THANK YOU to our many volunteers! Drs. Ashley Ulmer, David Engen, Chad Collins, Steve

Woodard, Nick Velis, Rod Tataryn, Lisa Ellingsen, Sue Weishaar, Susan Kohls, Brooke Clon-

inger, Mark Paxton, Tyler Shoemaker, Kimberly Craven, Amir Ganji, Brandy Richey, Kurt Peter-

son, David Petersen, Jared Evans, Bud Evans, Layne Hinckley, Jeff Henneberg, Josh Cochran,

Michelle Foglia, Brad Jarvis, Heather Frampton

Attend our annual fundraiser, “Pop A Cork For A Cause”. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to attend our

annual fundraiser at the Northern Quest Resort, I highly recommend you save the date, February 14! It’s

a FUN, lively evening with great food, wine and entertainment. Invitations will be mailed soon. Please

encourage your staff, dental reps and community contacts to attend as well!

Donate an auction item. Monetary donations are always welcome, but please consider donating items which

can be included in our live and silent auctions. Donations small and large are welcomed! A few great

ideas include: themed gift baskets (wine, family fun night, spa, sports, etc.), tickets to sporting events,

concerts and theme parks, golf vouchers, airline tickets, artwork, vacations, dinner gift certificates and

services. NO donation is too small. The SDDSF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As such, your

much needed donation is tax deductible! Donation form is on page 11.

Participate in Project Dental Access. Project Dental Access is a dentist led community effort to provide dental

care for low-income and uninsured Spokane County residents in need of emergency care. It is managed

by the SDDS Foundation. To be eligible, patients must be an adult over 19, working full or part-time, in

school or job training, reside within Spokane County, have no dental insurance and have a family income

that does not exceed 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. If every SDDS Member was able to commit

to seeing only 2 Project Dental Access patients a year in their office, we would be able to provide

MUCH needed care to over 700 patients!

Your support is truly needed and appreciated!

Warm regards,

Wendy

February 14th, 2014. We need your help to make it a success.

What can you do?

Please consider donating items which can be included in our live and silent auctions. Donations small

and large are welcomed! A few great ideas include: themed gift baskets (wine, family fun night, spa,

sports, etc.), tickets to sporting events, concerts and theme parks, golf vouchers, airline tickets, artwork,

vacations, dinner gift certificates and services. NO donation is too small. The SDDSF is a 501(c)(3) non-

profit organization. As such, your much needed donation is tax deductible! Monetary donations are

always welcome and again, tax deductible.

How do you donate?

If you are able to contribute, please complete the attached form and send to:

Where does the money go?

The money we raise supports our many programs designed to promote improved oral health and increased

opportunities for dental care to those in need throughout our community. The auction is one of our major

sources of revenue each year, and helps to sustain and expand our programs and improve access to care.

Your support is truly needed—and appreciated—to make this benefit a success!
