embers, guests, honorees, officers, and family.

First of all, thank you to our silent auction donors. Gregg Holtkamp once described his fellow professionals as some of the most genuine, hard working, and interesting people you would want to meet. Our donors are no exception. Sandy Franklin, is a glass artist. Ralph Wyand works in watercolor and colored pencil, and Tom Scheer is a fly fishing instructor extraordinaire. Tom also is devoted to his Project Healing Waters, which makes fly fishing available to our veterans. I’m sure there are more of you out there. Let us know! We’d love to see this auction expand. Proceeds will benefit our ever evolving charitable foundation. The efforts of our members have delivered $500,000 of dental care through Give Kids A Smile, Leave No Vet Behind, Options, and our Write It Up programs. We know there’s more we don’t know about. Our Society has more exciting efforts in store for 2012 and beyond.

It’s been a challenging few years for our profession and our community. Rest assured, these issues are being recognized and addressed by organized dentistry, whether it be the threat of mid-level providers or loss of funding for dental health clinics in Cincinnati. Special thanks to Glen Meyer for his op-ed piece in the Enquirer and to those members who wrote City Council member and candidates individually.

In 2007, Mark Bronson saw the need for a strategic plan. This vision and its implementation has allowed us to provide better service to our members. The obvious sequelae of our members’ success is the “pay it forward” that spills into and nourishes our community.

In 2011, we revisited and reworked our strategic plan. In the committee’s work, a few things

Past President’s Address

We’ve Only Just Begun

s I think back on my year as president of the Cincinnati Dental Society I am proud of what was accomplished and what has only just begun. I am impressed with the work that was done on the Strategic Plan and By-Laws as well as the continued excellence of our CE Program and the Member Benefit events. I am encouraged with the progress of updating the website and the Task Force to update the CDS Policy Manual. My “hat is off” to Vicki, the members of Council, the other officers and committee members and anyone else who volunteered their time & efforts to make 2011 another successful year for the Cincinnati Dental Society. Thank you.

became abundantly clear. Our website, while chock full of useful information, was not very user friendly. Our bylaws needed updating and our policies needed to enable our strategic plan.

And that’s just the condensed version . . .

Our Technical Committee, consisting of Andy Harris, Rob Smith, and Peter Suffield, has done a stellar job of assessing our members’ needs and formulating a framework to enhance our website. Special thanks to Randy Stastny for his vision and devotion to keeping us relevant and competitive in the future.

Our Bylaws Committee has once again done its due diligence and a task force is in place to update

policies to the smooth operation of our society to enable the fulfillment and success of our members.

Our Continuing Education Program is second to none. We have great programs for 2012 and 2013 and a restructured fee schedule to boot. Thanks to Pat Miller and Fred Peck, co-chairs for 2011, Barry Gibberman and Glen Meyer for 2012, and all committee members these past few years.

Our Membership Committee, chaired by Gregg Holtkamp has reached out to assess member needs and disseminate information on mid-level provider issues. Gregg is one worker bee - also chairing the Golf Committee for 2012, and making a mean house cured gravlax.

Our Finance Committee, chaired by Jerome McMahon, has met the challenge of keeping our society on solid financial ground in changing times. A new member of that committee, Laura Benesh, is with us tonight. Laura is a graduate of the AEGD Program based at University Hospital.

Peer Review, chaired by Steve Pick, and the Community Relations Committee continues to keep in touch with our members and our community.

I’d like to acknowledge our members that serve at the state and national levels. Mark Bronson is the current ODA President, and Mary Ellen Wynn serves on the Ohio State Dental Board. Joe Crowley is our newly elected ADA Trustee. My hat is off to them and all that participate on committees at the state and national levels.

None of this would be possible without Vicki Nixon. It’s been an incredible year, with great achievements and difficult decisions. Once again, Vicki is simply the best Executive Director you could wish for. She and her niece, Sasha, engineered the video made for tonight.

Happy Birth Festival, Vicki, our lives are richer because of you!

I’d like to thank the women I have the honor and pleasure to work with, Karen Watters and Margaret

Kuhnell. You have the patience of Job.

Also with me tonight is my big sister, Nancy Ary and her husband Bill. No family resemblance, right? If you need to know anything about Tulane football or New Orleans, just ask Bill.

Patti Wagner, my sister from another mother, is here also. She is celebrating her 39th birthday tonight - so get the girl a cocktail, okay?

Two members of my posse from THE University of Louisville School of Dentistry showed up.

• Lesia Langston and her husband, Judge David McKenna of Highland County;

• Pat Hobbs and her husband, Dave Willis. Dave taught us dental auxiliary utilization and attempted to instill business senses. He is best known for presiding over a killer Bloody Mary contest in the dental school basement.

Our friends, Lynn Laser and Mike White who keep us current in the world of fine fragrance and cars.

Our Ohio State connection is represented by John and Jill West. John is celebrating his 39th birthday this weekend also. Isn’t this great! - all these youngsters!

Our friends Bruce and Carole McIntosh. Bruce had the courage to give Peter his job out of law school. Thank you to Bruce and

Joe Shea for opening the doors to the Queen City Club tonight.

Last, but certainly not least, my husband Peter, the most “portable” guy a girl could wish for, and he loves dental folks!

My parting comment, is we’ve come a long way this year, with much further to go. I could not survive without my support system. The Cincinnati Dental Society wants to be that support system for you.

Thank you again for being here. Thank you for all you do for your patients, profession, community and families year round.

Have a great night!

BY VICTORIA J. NIXON, MSA Executive Director

Vicki’s Voice

W hat a year we had - fast paced and very productive! I enjoyed working with Dr. Randy Stastny, the Executive Committee, Council and committee members. We truly have great volunteers dedicating their time and expertise to your profession. Thank you all for making my job as your Executive Director a rewarding experience. I look forward to working with our new president, Dr. Patty Walter and her “team”.

There are several items that I would like to make you aware of that is in this Bulletin. Please pass this along to your dental team.

2012 CDS Member Event FlyerAll of our member events this year are open to your dental team. Please post the flyer in a common area of your office. We have prepared a flyer, which is inserted in this Bulletin.

Radiography Update CoursesThis year dental assistant’s radiography certificates will expire as of December 31, 2012. Each dental assistant must take a 2-hour update course in order to renew their certificate. We are offering six courses this year. So, please do not delay as space will be limited to 24 for each course.

Dentists Assisting Dentists (DaD) ProgramAs a reminder we still have our DaD program. The purpose of the program is to allow a group of general dentists to assist each other in case of unexpected disability, family emergency or death with organizational assistance from a committee formed for that purpose by the Cincinnati Dental Society (CDS). This helps keep patients in the stricken dentists’ office until such time the dentist returns or the practice is sold. For those who have never participated you may want to consider doing so for this year. It is really a great program, which fortunately has not had to be used much since its existence. Dr. John Bennet oversees the DaD program so if you have any questions

give him a call at 513-662-2000 or see page 23 of this Bulletin.

2012 Preferred ProvidersOur Membership Committee has finalized the selection of preferred providers for 2012. You will be receiving additional information under seperate cover.

AmalgamatorsMs. Nancy Carter with the Department of Health is seeking used working amalgamators for their dental

clinics. If you have any you can spare please let Nancy know, 513-357-7383. She would be greatly appreciative!

Membership DirectoryWe have the new membership directories still available for purchase. If you would like to obtain a copy please email me at [email protected]. There is a small fee for the directory insert and/or new 3-ring binder.

Have a wonderful January and don’t forget about our

upcoming continuing education programs and

CDS member events!

Thank you all for making my

job as your Executive Director

a rewarding experience.

I look forward to working with

our new president, Dr. Patty

Walter and her “team”.

Happy New Year!

SEPTEMBER COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES September 12, 2011

Dr. Mary Ann Hanlon, Secretary

Call to Order: President, Dr. Randy Stastny, called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Roll Call: Members Present: Bennet, Brandt, Chopra, Dorr, Gennantonio, Hanlon, Harris, Kluener, Murdock, Newby, Kuennemeier, Parker, Petricone, Schaeffer, Stastny and Walter. Members Absent: Smith Guests Present: Dr. Mark Bronson, Ms. Nancy Carter, Dr. Noble Maseru, and Dr. Terrence Poole Executive Director Present: Vicki Nixon The June Council Meeting Minutes were unanimously approved as posted. Guest Reports: Update on Health Centers in Cincinnati- Ms. Carter and Drs. Maseru and Poole City Council’s proposal to make additional budget cuts to the Cincinnati Health Department would potentially result in the closure of at least some clinics. These clinics provide both emergency and scheduled dental care to low or no income patients. Closure of one or more of these clinics will likely overwhelm other existing healthcare facilities and result in an overall increase in the cost of care provided. Motion: (Walter/Schaeffer): Request legal counsel at the ODA to compose a letter to Cincinnati City Council (on behalf of the CDS Executive Committee and Council) urging them to avoid further budget cuts to the Health Department budget. A letter from CDS EC will go to membership encouraging them to use the letter to contact their local Council representative. ODA Executive Report: Dr. Mark Bronson gave an update on the HOD schedule. President’s Report: Dr. Randy Stastny The Council seat vacated by Dr. Jeff Glenn has been filled by Dr. Wayne Wauligman. The pros/cons of adding a membership category for “Allied Staff” were discussed.

Motion (Stastny/Bennet) the Society shall offer Membership to the Allied Staff of any member in good standing who meets any of the qualifications of Section 10. Allied Staff Members shall be members of the Society, but not the ODA or the ADA.

Amendment (Kuennemeier/Parker)-Pursue the above concept utilizing a task force made from members of the Program and Membership Committees to develop specific membership criteria and benefits rewarded, since Council is unable to enact a bylaws change. The Membership and Program Committees will discuss at their next meetings.

Amendment: passed (1 opposed) Motion: passed (1 opposed) President Elect’s Report: Dr. Patricia Walter Meeting summary with Cincinnati Insurance Company-considering partnership benefit package, including CE/membership event sponsorships, bulletin advertising, and free risk management program. Strategic Plan Update: Dr. Patricia Walter The Strategic Planning Committee and Executive Committee greatly simplified the Strategic Plan making desired critical goals more easily achieved and evaluated. Proposed changes will be sent via email to all Council members for further review and final vote. Report of the Nominating Committee: Dr. Ken Brandt See attached Report. The appointment to the Vice President is pending. Motion to approve report (Brandt/Schaeffer): Unanimously approved. Relief Fund Trust Update: Dr. Mark Bronson A dentist in Cincinnati has applied for financial assistance through the Relief Trust Fund. The CDS relief offer was declined. The ODA’s offer of relief funds was accepted. The CDS Council approved by vote (1 opposed) to pay 25% of the ODA offer. To decrease our tax burden and simplify paperwork, the Finance Committee has recommended dissolving the Relief Fund.

September Council Meeting Minutes (continued from Page 8)

Motion: To dissolve the Relief Trust Fund and apply the remaining funds toward the Society’s Foundation (Bronson/Murdock). Unanimously approved. This will need membership vote at the November continuing education program. Treasurer’s Report: Dr. Matt Parker This year’s continuing education income is less than originally anticipated, while expenses overall continue to grow. To offset this trend, the Finance committee has recommended a dues increase for 2012 in the amount of $10. Motion (Parker/Kluener): $10 dues increase was unanimously approved. It was also recommended to increase dues automatically by a certain percentage each year. This amount would be determined by the Finance Committee. A policy was submitted for approval. “The operating budget will include an annual cost-of-living increase of dues each year to help defray annual increases in costs incurred by the dental society.” Amendment (Parker/Schaeffer): Change “will” to “may”. Unanimously approved. The following policy was approved. “The operating budget may include an annual cost-of-living increase of dues each year to help defray annual increases in costs incurred by the dental society. Executive Director’s Report: Vicki Nixon Judy Arnett is increasing dentist and patient participation at the Roselawn Dental Center. She is also doing a great deal of outreaching to school nurses and other organizations promoting our free dental care. Huntington Bank is considering offering CDS member benefits through the Executive office. Services being considered include payroll, installment options for paying for continuing education. CDS Committee Updates: Access: Vicki Nixon for Dr. Linda Smith Cincinnati will NOT be hosting programs for LNVB and GKAS in 2012. CDS involvement in a pilot program through Lighthouse Youth Services is being considered. Membership: Dr. Andy Dorr 4 new members were accepted: (Drs.) Charles Brooks, Erik Evans, Rachel Tepe and Angy Mounir. Program: Vicki Nixon The next meeting is October 24, 2011 Technical: Dr. Andrew Harris Member survey regarding website needs/desires has not yet been sent. Upon receiving the results of the survey the committee will come to Council for approval of the new features of the website. Motion (Harris/Brandt): Request up to $10K for AI Software to implement website enhancements. Unanimously approved. ODA Updates: Access: Vicki Nixon for Linda Smith Resolution 6-11 was discussed and unanimously opposed. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Dr. Mark Bronson Dr. Patrick Lloyd, dean of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, is against the DHAT concept as it is currently proposed. NEW BUSINESS: None Announcements were read before the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 pm.

NOVEMBER COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES November 7, 2011

Dr. Mary Ann Hanlon, Secretary

Call to Order: President, Dr. Randy Stastny, called the meeting to order at 6:50 pm. Roll Call: Members Present: Bennet, Brandt, Chopra, Dorr, Hanlon, Kluener, Kuennemeier, Newby, Parker, Petricone, Schaeffer, Smith, Stastny, Walter and Wauligman Members Absent: Gennantonio, Harris and Murdock Guests Present: Drs. Mark Bronson, Joe Crowley, Mary Ellen Wynn and Kelly Lambert (Fortis College) Executive Director Present: Vicki Nixon The September Council Meeting Minutes were unanimously approved as posted. Guest Reports: Fortis College Dental Assisting Program Ms. Kelly Lambert gave an overview of their program, which is 48 weeks long (1020 hours). Students graduating from the program will be prepared for entry level employment and have a Radiology Certificate. They are the only program that is Board approved for the certificate. They have an 82.8% employment rate out of their externships. She is interested in increasing externship opportunities within our Society. ODA Executive Report: Dr. Mark Bronson welcomed D1 dental students to the dental profession in September at The Ohio State University. Dean of OSU, Patrick Lloyd, is getting around the state visiting with dental societies. He plans on contacting us soon. ADA dues went up $7; the $23 assessment was eliminated so there is net gain. He also attended the RDH Association House. Dr. Bronson has already visited with multiple societies discussing what is going on in organized dentistry and at the ODA. Ohio State Dental Board: Dr. Mary Ellen Wynn said the Board has been asked to look at another testing school for EFDA’s. She also asked if Vicki could confirm with Kentucky that they have advertising rules. License renewal is now open and if a dentist does not renew by 1-1-12, then they will have to renew by paper. RDH license, if not renewed by 2/1/12, will be suspended. The Board encourages all dentists to check dental assistant and RDH license before hiring. There are open Board positions, but none for specialists. Dentists should take the time to register with OARRS. The Board’s opinion on cone beams is that training should be done by the company only and all films must be taken by an Ohio radiographer under direct supervision. ODPAC: Dr. Joe Crowley indicated that ODPAC is working hard for organized dentistry, so being financially sound has been extremely beneficial. They have another meeting next week. President’s Report: Dr. Stastny reported that the Bylaws are being revised and they should be ready for Council in December. The revised Strategic Plan was approved by Council by way of email, the Foundation’s name has changed to “The Cincinnati Dental Society’s Oral Health Foundation” with a tag line…serving the underserved in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Changing the date of the installation to January was discussed, but it was decided to table this for now. There will be two items of business at the November CE course; The Relief Trust Fund and The Report of the Nominating Committee. Dr. Stastny attended the RDH advisory board meeting. They would like to change their Bylaws, increase their advisory board; two additional events will take place in 2012 with Dental Care Plus and P&G. He will ask Mary Kay, new director, to attend our December Council meeting to bring everyone up-to-date on the activities of the program. ODA sent a letter asking if we would like to have an officer visit next year and it was reiterated that there are Board positions open.

The evening included a silent auction to benefit our Foundation. Dr. Tom Scheer donated a flying fish lesson, Dr. Sandy Franklin, handmade art glass jewelry and Dr. Ralph Wyand a drawing done in pencil. This was a unique opportunity to see what hobbies our members have outside of dentistry.

We may had a first - three families with their children, also dentists, attended the dinner - Dr. William Jackson, Drs. Harry and Julia Kinlaw and Drs. Larry and Jan Tepe. The Tepe’s niece, Rachel and a dentist, joined the group. It was a wonderful site to see!

Cincinnati Dental Society Member Event

at Union Terminal

November 14, 2011

After a delicious Italian dinner and dessert members were given a crash course on the history of Union Terminal, which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Tours were given in small groups, which allowed for questions and more access to those areas less visited. Comments on what a great time everyone had were spoken as the evening ended. Dr. Jan Tepe sent an email the following morning to the Executive Office and said, “I just wanted to let you know that last evening’s event at Union Terminal was great. Larry and I enjoyed this so much - we’re looking forward to future events!” So why not join us at our first CDS Member Event with Dr. Dennis Brown at Maggiano’s on February 13, 2012?

This event was supported by Crest & Oral-B, Dentar, Inc., Infintech, LLC and Superior Dental Care Alliance. Thank you!
