President’s Message By Dr. S. Tyler Shoemaker

It was Noah Webster who said, “All government originates in families.”

If this is true, the election cycle we have just exited was, at its core,

about our families.

Little did I realize over 20 years ago as I began my professional journey,

that I would be joining a dental family. So I ask myself and each of us –

What are we doing to strengthen this dental organization, this dental

family? Following are a few things we could get involved with:

Attend the WDS Annual Meeting on November 15. Come join me on a

trip to Seattle in my family minivan, there is still room. It’s not a station

wagon, but we can still fight over who sits where. Visit

www.concerneddentistsofwashingtonstate.org for more info.

Volunteer at the IDEA Clinic. Come join our new staff dentist Dr. John

Wesley as we continue our efforts to serve our brothers and sisters in

need. They might not be your real brothers and sisters, but it might feel

like it after they give you a big hug to thank you for your time. Or not.

Come to Dental Action Day on January 25th. Last year I ran in to one of

my dental patient families in Olympia and it really hit home what we

were fighting for. WSDA had some extra spirit scarves and this family’s

spirits were lifted.

Take a vacation or night out at the SDDS Foundation’s Pop A Cork For A

Cause on Friday, February 15 at the Northern Quest Casino. We need

your auction items and support as we celebrate this great cause.

Yes, families fight, they hug, they lift each other’s spirits, and they cele-

brate each other’s triumphs. Let’s invite all members of our dental fam-

ily to join with us in this worthy cause of governing, guarding, and pro-

tecting our profession

WDS Proxy Voting & WSDA Hospitality Suite Information

WDS member dentists should have received their WDS Notice of Annual Meeting and Proxy for Vot-

ing. This mailing from WDS and from two WDS dentist board members running for re-election to the Board

was mailed recently. If you are attending the Annual meeting on November 15 at 6 pm, you do not need

to respond in any way. Please be aware that The WSDA will be opening a hospitality suite in the Northwest

1 Room from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., serving a complimentary deli buffet prior to the meeting and all are encour-

aged to attend. If you are unable to attend the Annual meeting, Concerned Dentists of Washington State has

posted recommendations on their website (www.concerneddentistsofwashingtonstate.org). Proxy votes are

not due until the day before elections on November 15.

WSDA/UW Mentor Program

In collaboration with the University of Washington School of Dentistry, the Mentor Program offers the unique

opportunity for WSDA members and current dental school students to form a relationship. Becoming a mentor

doesn’t have to involve a huge time commitment — some communicate only via email and have just one face-to-

face meeting a year at the annual Mentor Reception, others interact more frequently — there are no set rules. Addi-

tionally, you needn’t have graduated from the UWSoD to participate, all WSDA members are welcome. And,

geography doesn’t have to be a deciding factor — mentors and students routinely communicate via email and

phone. If you are interested in being a mentor, please sign up at http://www.wsda.org/mentor-program/

The mentor reception will be held on Thursday, November 29th, from 6:00-8:30pm, at the Burke Museum.

RSVP at http://www.wsda.org/mentor-reception

Not able to attend the reception, but still interested in mentoring? Please contact Laura at [email protected]

Join me in welcoming the IDEA Clinic’s new Dental Director, Dr. John Wesley. A note from Dr. Wesley:

Hello my name is Dr. John Wesley and I am the new dentist at the IDEA Clinic. I would like to take this time to introduce myself and thank the Spokane District Dental Society members for the opportunity to represent you and provide care at your IDEA Clinic! I en-joyed meeting many of you at the recent general meeting and look forward to speaking to all of you in the days and weeks to come. As your IDEA Clinic dental director I will strive to provide you with clinical and administrative support, efficient communication, and a rewarding experience for all. Please feel free to contact me directly with questions, feedback, and any scheduling needs at any hour. I am here to work for you! Let me know how I can help make your IDEA Clinic work for you, your office, and your patients. I look forward to talking part in the IDEA Clinic becoming a major resource for all involved with your help! A place where patients can receive great dental care while reducing costs for both the patient and the provider, a resource and symbol for the dental commu-nity, and an opportunity for patients to obtain immediate care while receiving the help they need to find a permanent dental home with their local private practice office. Respectfully yours, John Wesley (509) 368-0131 (mobile)

Dental Action Day Dental Action (DAD) 2013 will be held on Friday, January 25th

in Olympia. Decisions made this legislative session could re-

sult in fundamental changes to how dental care is delivered.

Issues like health care reform implementation, funding for

higher education and dental residency programs, dental

workforce, licensure fees and dental Medicaid funding are

sure to be discussed by the legislature in 2013, making par-

ticipation in DAD all the more critical.

DAD is a free event that allows dentists to meet with their

legislators face to face and discuss important issues that af-

fect the dental profession. A typical meeting would involve a

group of dentists and their legislator or legislative aide. The

meetings will last no more than 15 minutes. In addition to

legislative meetings, a free one hour CE course will be pro-

vided for all dentists who wish to participate at 11:00 am.

Breakfast will begin at 7:15 am on the Capitol Grounds and

appointments will take place throughout the day with most

occurring between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Sign up to attend

today and help ensure that the voice of the dental profession

is heard in Olympia.

For additional information, call Mike Walsh at 800-448-3368

or email at [email protected].

Letter to the Editor

Tired of insurance dictating your fees?

We have all felt the crunch of the lower reimbursement levels from insurance providers – what are our options and where is dentistry

headed if we don’t change course?

What are our options? First, being a network provider is a choice. Allowing CEO’s of large insurance companies to dictate how we run

our business is the core problem. Secondly, we need to teach our patients about alternative benefit options and promote companies to be-

come self-insured or develop direct reimbursement programs that utilize funds more efficiently.

If CEO’s of insurance companies choose to keep reimbursements low, it will lower the quality of dental care. Dentists are pressured to use

cheaper dental materials, work faster, and are reluctant to increase overhead by investing in technology that will improve their level of

care.

In 1952, Greg’s grandpa, Howard Whitehead, DDS, Los Angeles, CA, vowed to never accept a dental insurance plan, which he held to

throughout his entire career. He stated, “dental insurance companies would begin to dictate what type of treatment could be performed and

at what price. A dental insurance company’s primary interest was to earn money, not provide dental benefits to patients or dental compen-

sation to dentists.” These words are still true today.

At The Center for Oral Health we dropped all contracts with dental insurance providers effective Feb 1, 2012. Not once have we second

guessed this decision, our bottom line is better. It’s what’s right for our patients and the dental practice, while striving to maintain quality

patient care. (Of course, each dentist needs to determine the best course for his or her practice).

Patients are looking to their dental professionals to guide them in knowing what to do when it comes to dental benefits. Unfortunately,

many dentists and staff members are misinformed about these self-insured/direct re-imbursement plans and are telling their patients that

they are not desirable. This is confusing the employees that are voting on these proposed changes. Large local school districts are explor-

ing the idea of becoming self-insured with their dental plans. This is a big deal to Spokane dentists and their patients. The only thing

missing from these plans are huge payouts to insurance carriers.

Nine Mile Falls and Freeman School Districts have already chosen to become self-insured through Assurant and have improved their bene-

fits and saved money as well. The Nine Mile Falls school district experienced tens of thousands of dollars in savings in their first year

which can now be used to either increase next year’s annual dental benefit or lower their premiums. Our office has experienced a 100%

satisfaction level with all of our patients that are employed by these school districts. Each one has said that they’d recommend this plan

without hesitation.

Assurant is one company that acts as a third party administrator for self-insured companies. The self-insured company dictates the plan

and Assurant simply pays as directed. Any unused premium dollars are kept with the employer. According to the ADA, direct reimburse-

ment/self-insured plans are significantly better payment systems for dental care than any other available today. *

If dentists do not encourage companies to switch to self-insured programs, the current insurance companies (i.e. WDS) will continue to be

empowered to lower or maintain current reimbursement levels. Dentists have had lowering and frozen reimbursement rates from WDS for

four years now and these companies have incentive to continue to hold their ground due to our lack of action. Because these actions have

been successful, other dental insurance providers are following suit. Each year, dental overhead has continuously risen by a steady 2-3%

annually. Dentist salaries are suffering all of the losses and the only thing left to cut is more of our salary or quality of care.

Steven L. Bates, DDS Greg W. Miller, DDS

EnviroStars is a Washington State program recognizing businesses

that properly manage and dispose of hazardous wastes.

207 Dentists across seven counties King, Kitsap, Whatcom, Pierce, Jefferson, Skagit and Spokane are Certified

EnviroStars. Dentists make up 31% of the 819 Certified EnviroStars. The EnviroStars Certification program for Dentists

in Spokane County was launched in 2012 by the nine partner agencies, whose logos are shown at the bottom of this page.

In Spokane County, Drs. Kurt Peterson, Mitch Orsi and Chris Chaffin were the first to become Spokane

EnviroStars Certified. You are invited to apply for Spokane EnviroStars no-cost certification.

The EnviroStars Program started in King County 16 years ago and Dr. Steven Albright, in Seattle, was one of the first

certified dentists. Here is what Dr. Albright said when Spokane EnviroStars contacted him for this newsletter.

“We are a 5-star designated EnviroStars member and have been since last century! We were one of the early

members of the program and are happy that the list for dentists is considerably longer now! It doesn't take

much effort to be an EnviroStars participant nor the extra little effort to be a 5-star member. It makes you

concentrate on paying more attention to how you are doing things and make adjustments that will make your

workplace a safer, cleaner environment. Employees see you set the standard and they'll follow suit. It rubs

off! Some patients care enough about the issue themselves that they have come to us because we are a

member.

It's easy, good for PR, good for business, it's good for the environment! What's not to like about it??? In a

nutshell, it's the right thing to do! With some attention to the environment issues in our own dental office, we

can impact our collective carbon footprint. "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!"

Thanks for contacting me about the issue. We're proud to be a 5-star EnviroStars member! Steven J. Albright, D.D.S.

In a 2012 survey of Certified EnviroStars

businesses, the top ten benefits reported by

the business owners are displayed in the bar

graph to the right.

Dr. John Kois, Kois Center, Seattle says,

“Going green’ is a part of our culture today.

EnviroStars assures our patients and

colleagues of our efforts to support this.”

In Spokane County, be recognized for protecting our river and “sole source” aquifer.
