President’s Message By Dr. Jared Evans The Spokane District Dental Society is second to none amongst component societies with-

in organized dentistry. It is a great honor and privilege to serve as the SDDS President

this year. I am excited and optimistic for our upcoming year. The online survey that the

membership completed was very insightful and there is some great information to share.

We must always remember that our mission is to encourage the improvement of the

health of the public and to promote the art & science of dentistry.

I love the story of how Andrew Carnegie credited much of his success to what he called his

“Mastermind.” I’m paraphrasing here, but the mastermind was a group of people meeting

and engaged to move the same purpose forward. That’s why I believe increased member-

ship attendance to our meetings and events is important. We are the Mastermind of Den-

tistry in the Inland Northwest. Great things happen in a room with like-minded people.

SDDS-member dentists are the most successful dentists and we help each other succeed,

it’s the local fraternity for dentistry. It is with that fraternal spirit that I want to ensure

that we just don’t get together to complain or get other colleagues unnecessarily upset in

a way which doesn’t benefit anyone or resolve a problem. I refuse to accept complaints

from members which are vague, begin with “everyone says” and really don’t move our

purposes forward. If you want to be part of the solution, get involved and serve on the

committees and councils that get you fired up, get active to get the job done the way you

think is best. If you’re not involved, then support the efforts of those members who are

willingly working in those positions for everyone’s behalf and benefit. Either step up or get

back in line, what role do you want to play in this organization? The least you can do is

show up.

We are planning additional events this year and everyone is invited. We are preparing for

the New Member Social, as well as some family-friendly gatherings at sporting events and

Silverwood Theme Park. Let’s have some fun together as colleagues and with our families

when we can. My emphasis for the monthly membership meetings is to not waste our

time. Our time together should be prompt, organized, relevant, and enjoyable while ob-

taining CE hours. From your survey responses the hot topics of interest to dentists were:

Pharmacology, Practice Management, and Dental Implants. The hot topics for dentists

and office staff were: Communication and Scheduling/Billing. We are in the process of

finalizing our meetings for the year and I know you will be pleased with what we have in

store. But you need to come!

We are currently preparing for the Washington State Dental Association’s House of Dele-

gates. This will be an interesting session for sure. It is a chance for our influence to in-

crease and for us to be a force to reckon with (there will always be the East vs. West

thing). As our members in state positions and our delegates prepare this summer, we’ll

be reporting on all that’s happening at the September Membership Meeting, it’s a very

important meeting to attend. That way our delegation will be ready for the House of Dele-

gates at the end of September. I also would ask all of us campaign for Ashley Ulmer as

she plans to run for state office.

President’s Message continued

As we approach 2014, dental plans are changing because of the Affordable Care Act. The unknowing and uncertainty is nerve-

wracking. We will be seeing incremental changes on the current policies and practices, but we will also be witnessing and expe-

riencing the first steps towards the sweeping health reform changes. We need to remain alert to how these things will affect our

practices. We will also need to be smart, nimble, and flexible to take advantage of these changes as much as possible. Maybe

we can make this into something better than we have now. But we’re in this together and the best advocacy we have is with the

ADA and WSDA. There is power in numbers, but we will have to act in numbers to ensure the right things come to pass. It will

be an eventful year for the Government/Health Services and Legislative Committee. They will be one of our best information

sources and it will be important to prepare for an even more successful Dentist Day on the Hill this year.

We need new office space. Our lease is up, the building is for sale and it’s time for us to move. We have been paying $400 per

month right now and what we have is the attic of an old converted house in Spokane. That doesn’t count utilities, internet, or

housekeeping; which adds hundreds of dollars more each month. I think we have found a place and I would like to share it with

the membership so we can approve this move. There are always pros and cons to be seen and I want to discuss them. I want us

to move the SDDS Office to a building called the Liberty Lake Portal (check it out at www.libertylakeportal.com). We can get a

fantastic office space with 24/7 security, internet, phone, utilities, housekeeping and some additional bonus features for $600 per

month. The bonus features include tenant access to multiple break rooms, a free copy center, multiple conference rooms, an

event and hosting room, and a state-of-the-art high-tech classroom including thirty computers. All we have to do is reserve those

areas when needed. It would be a fantastic place to host events, offer continuing education classes, and have study clubs at no

additional costs. This could significantly reduce some of our CE costs which would be passed on to our CE attendees. So the

only downside is Liberty Lake…why? It only takes you 20 minutes to get anywhere in Spokane County. How many of you

have even been to the current SDDS office before? I believe we’ll get back far more returns on this facility than what we pay for

and are getting now. So…I now open the floor to suggestions. If you can find a place that provides everything we can get in

Liberty Lake, for a better price, and with a better location…I’m all ears because I have not yet found anything better. Let’s

move ASAP!

I also want to take this chance to recognize Numerica Credit Union and all their support to the Society and the Foundation. Fif-

teen thousand dollars has been donated to us this past year from Numerica. As a gesture of appreciation, I would encourage our

members to take a look at what Numerica has to offer for personal and business banking. I am also recommending to the Budget

and Finance Committee that we move our SDDS Accounts to Numerica since they have been so willing to work with us and

generously support our efforts. The constitution and bylaws state that the ―prudent man rule‖ shall apply to all accounts. It

would be imprudent of us to not appreciate what Numerica has provided us. Wendy has reported difficulties in services with the

bank we are currently using. But since the prudent rule applies to our accounts…I guess I would be willing to stay if the other

bank will offer to donate $16,000 or more to us!

I’ve shared a lot of information here. I’m excited to offer you some of my thoughts and I hope it is received as positive leader-

ship for the Society. Nothing can remain the same, the only constant is change. So either we’re moving up or moving down.

Status quo and stagnant is moving down in my opinion. It is not my intent for things to stay the same if we can improve on all

the good we have and move onward and upward. So enjoy the remaining moments of summer and prepare to be involved with a

great year ahead.

Sincerely,

Jared

Dr. Debra Craig

I grew up in North Dakota and attended dental school at Uni-versity of Minnesota. I have 3 grown children with 2 grand-sons and 1 granddaughter. My general practice in on North Di-vision near Whitworth College. I love gardening/cooking/hanging out with family and friends. I am excited to serve on the execu-tive council and be part of this dental community.

Dr. Jeff Henneberg Born in the Bay area of California. Lived in Hermiston, OR as a kid, but spent middle school through college in Pasade-na, CA. Graduated from La Sierra University with a BA in liberal arts and a teaching degree. Taught middle school math in Portland, OR for 5 years and was working on my ad-ministration degree from Portland State University. Moved to Sandpoint, ID and became a principal of small private school for 2 years. I was always trying to find something else or some other business. I knew I wanted to do something dif-ferent, but wasn't sure what I wanted. My neighbor in Sandpoint was a dentist and I decided to spend the day in his office to see if dentistry was a good career move for me. He was a leader in his practice, he was serving people, he was part of a team, he was educating patients, and he was contributing to his community in a positive way. Most of the reasons I went into education in the first place. I decided to go back to undergrad and take the necessary coursework and the DAT. I graduated from Loma Linda University Den-tal School in 2005 and we looked to relocate back up to the Northwest. We purchased Gordon Hawk's practice in 2006 and practice general denistry in the Valley and North Spo-kane. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family (Jennifer-spouse, Sydney-8 and Quinn-3), playing golf and basketball, and traveling. I am glad to be a part of organized dentistry. I believe that our occupation is encountering a unique time, and to be committed to an organization that wants to preserve the best parts of why I chose dentistry is important to me. Plus, I get to hang out with a bunch of good people.

He received his Master’s degree in pediatric dentistry with a master’s thesis focused on emergency treatment of avulsed permanent teeth. He returned to Spokane in 2006 and joined The Children's Choice Pediatric Dental group. In 2007 Dr. Herzog completed his board certification in pediatric dentistry. Organized dentistry has always been a passion of Dr. Herzog. Dr. Jake DaBell

I grew up in Rexburg, Idaho, the fifth of

nine children. After graduating from

Brigham Young University, I went to the

University of North Carolina for dental

school and then on to the University of

Washington for orthodontics. I’ve been

practicing orthodontics in Spokane for two

and a half years, and almost two years

ago, I purchased a practice on the corner

of Evergreen and Broadway in Spokane

Valley. My wife, Abby, and I have been

married for just over 10 years and have 4

children - 2 boys and 2 girls - ages 9 years

to 6 months. In my spare time I enjoy running, reading, skiing, making and listening to music, and spend-

ing time with my wife and kids doing just about anything. I’m on the Executive Council because I believe in

the importance of organized dentistry and was invited by a colleague to participate more actively. I believe

we are part of the greatest profession and have a wonderful local organization in the SDDS.

Dr. Ryan Wilson was raised in Redlands California where he attended La Sierra University and later graduat-

ed from Loma Linda University in 2008 with a degree as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).

He and Dr. Ryan Allen purchased Office Anesthesia & Dentistry's South Hill location in July 2011 and began

Sleep Dentistry of Spokane.

Sleep Dentistry of Spokane is committed to providing high quality, compassionate and comprehensive dental

service for the entire family. Our special focus is with children and individuals with special needs, requiring

general anesthesia or IV sedation.

Dr. Wilson and his wife Lisa live in Spokane. Together they enjoy snowboarding, golfing, running, scuba div-

ing and spending quality time with their dog Ender.

Ryan Wilson, DDS is an active member of the following organizations: ADA, CDA,, WSDA and SDDS. Dr,

Wilson is licensed in California, Oregon and WA.

Meet your 2013-2014 Executive Council Members

Dr. Grant Rodkey

I grew up in Spokane and spent some time away in professional development. Initially, I was a physical metallurgist, an engineer of metals and their alloys, and worked in Oregon. While in Ore-gon I developed an interest in the dental field due my love of science and the ability to interact with people on a more personal level. Graduating from OHSU I later moved to Spokane and have expe-rienced private practice, public dentistry and locum tenens. I enjoy snowboarding in the winter and whitewater rafting in the summer. Yard therapy occupies much of my time in the growing season. I have served on the EC in the government affairs position due to my belief that in our historically representative form of government, one person with passion and conviction can influence those in power with appropriately worded communications. Even more effective is when that passion and conviction can be passed on and instilled in others with similar interest in maintaining our freedoms. It is important that we keep in mind that the government of the people, by the people and for the people is to be our servant, not our master. Finally, as one founding father said, " Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom."

Dr. Steve Aeshliman, DDS, PS

Dr. Steve was born in Belgium and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico at age 2. He grew up in

the mountainous region outside of Albuguerque, the first son on Dr. Daniel Aeschliman and Mrs.

Wendy Aeschiman. He spent most of his childhood in the gymnasium, for which he received a full

gymnastics scholarship at the Univ. of New Mexico. In addition to countless hours in the gym, he

studied during off hours and was honored to receive a full Academic Presidential Scholarship, as

well as a partial music scholarship to play clarinet in the UNM symphony.

After receiving a BS degree in Biology and dual minors in chemistry and music performance, he

attended the Univ. of Missouri-Kansas City, where he achieved his Doctor of Dental Surgery in

1999. He was then accepted into the UMKC Periodontal residency, from which he received his

Certificate in Periodontics in 2001.

He currently maintains a private practice in the specialty of Periodontics in Spokane, and is an ac-

tive member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the Western Academy of Periodontolo-

gy, the Academy of Osseointegration, the ADA, and the WSDA. He has two children, a son Porter

who is almost 7 and a daughter Sophia turning 5 in November. Dr. Steve has been published in the

Journal of Periodontology, and teaches when possible for multiple groups and organizations. He

was recently asked to head a large study club group in southern Canada, and plans on taking on

the leadership of this group. He was recently nominated to be the head of continuing education for

the Spokane District Dental Society.

His main interests are his children, skiing, fishing, fitness, music and the outdoors in general.

License Fee REDUCTION!

We are proud to announce that as a result

of WSDA's advocacy over the past year,

the Department of Health is proposing a

$176 net reduction in your dental license

renewal fee. Initial license fees are also

expected to drop $175. Formal rule-

making on these fee decreases is ex-

pected to begin shortly. The reduction in

the licensure renewal rate should begin

sometime this fall.

UW students bolster Spokane area’s dental health

Spending the spring before graduation with your hands in

strangers’ mouths might not be every student’s cup of tea. Eric

Nygard, however, couldn’t have enjoyed himself more.

Dr. Nygard (at left), who received his dental degree from the

University of Washington in June, spent the spring at the Lake

Spokane Community Health Center in a clinical rotation for the

UW School of Dentistry. The rotation was part of the school’s

Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE) program, which

was launched in 2007 with state funds. A similar rotation is

conducted at the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic’s

Riverstone location in Spokane.

“It was a great experience,” said Dr. Nygard.

Built with the help of Eastern Washington University’s dental

hygiene program, RIDE was created to address the issue of

access to dental care in rural and underserved areas of the

state, especially in Eastern Washington.

While dentists are clustered heavily along the I-5 corridor in Western Washington, obtaining care can be far

less convenient east of the mountains. For example, in 2007, King County had six times as many dentists per

capita as Pend Oreille County in Washington’s northeast corner.

The RIDE clinical rotations give students a chance to make a real impact where it matters, said Dr. Jon Sok, Dr.

Nygard’s preceptor at the Lake Spokane Community Dental Clinic. “We see a lot of patients that can be

classified as the working poor, many on a fixed income and patients on some level of state assistance, as well

as a small population of homeless patients,” he said.

While the RIDE students are closely supervised by their clinic directors, they still handle a significant share of

patients. At Lake Spokane, the student’s presence allowed the dental clinic to handle about a 20 percent

increase in patient care, Dr. Sok said.

Dear SDDS Member,

The WSDA has announced a very exciting competition between the component societies in Washington. Here’s

the skinny:

The Game: All 17 component societies will be competing against one another to see which three can gain the

largest percentage increase in membership based solely on the combined recruitment efforts of the societies

members. The top three components with the largest percentage of growth will then be awarded tickets to a

suite at a Seahawks game for the upcoming season. The 1st place component will receive four pairs, 2nd place

two pairs and 3rd place one pair. The tickets will then be raffled off within the winning component societies and

only those who participated in recruitment will be eligible to win.

How do you ensure you name gets entered into the raffle? Once a dentist recruits a non-member they will let

us know by filling out the form located at the bottom of this page and we will verify the recruited dentist has

joined. At that point, provided their component society is in the top three for recruitment, they will gain one en-

try into the raffle per every member recruited. Therefore, the more dentists you recruit the more times your

name will be in the raffle and the more likely it is you will get to enjoy a Seahawks game from the best seats in

the house.

Lastly, the top recruiter, regardless of component society, will be awarded a pair of tickets to the suite.

The Strategy: Our goal is to draft as many non-member dentists to join organized dentistry with a grassroots

approach that centers around you- the active WSDA member. We are asking for your help in recruiting non-

members as you know better than anyone the value of membership and how your support directly contributes

to the strengthening of the profession. The reality is that our membership numbers are falling and with that our

market share of the dentists in Washington. We need your help to reverse the trend. This program provides a

great way to share all of the Associations success with your peers. There is no better "pitch" then one that

comes from someone who truly understands and has benefited from their membership. Your stories, personal

accomplishments and involvement in organized dentistry far outweigh any promotional materials we make

available.

There is an unparalleled strength in numbers and the more we are able to grow our team the more united we

stand as a profession.

The Playbook: Below are promotional materials that you may find helpful during your recruiting efforts and a

membership application to make available when you think you sealed the deal. Upon request, we can also pro-

vide non-member lists to help bolster your recruitment numbers. Please email Laura Rohlman at

[email protected], or call 206.973.5218 to request a list.

I’ve attached the membership application for you to provide to non-members. Should you or prospective mem-

bers you speak with have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Warm regards,

Wendy
