GSE Team Leader to District 4180
Mexico – Congratulations to Margarita
Rickard (RC Mt Warning AM) who was
selected yesterday to lead the Group
Study Exchange Team to Mexico next
February. There were four outstanding
candidates, and each of them would be
an excellent team leader. It was a very
difficult decision for the District GSE
Committee. Margarita will now join the
Selection Panel to choose the four team
members on 17th and 18th August.

Motorcycle Raffled and Really Rolled
The raffle of the Marshin motorcycle
was completed recently and half the
funds raised presented to the Mens
Shed in Murwillumbah. Photograph
above is a very happy ―Mad Dog‖
from the Mens Shed receiving the
cheque for $650 from President
David while treasurer Mike looks
on.
The motorcycle was donated to the
club by a member who wishes to
remain anonymous. It was almost
new, having only 26km on the
speedo but after three years of non-
use needed some attention to prepare
for sale. This was provided by
members of the Mens Shed who
dismantled, cleaned and reassembled
the machine.
Tickets were sold and the draw was
held at our regular Saturday morning
sausage sizzle.
The lucky winner was Tony Organ, a
local person, so we did not have to
arrange delivery to some distant
place.
Thank you to all connected with this
project, the original donor, the
friendly people at the Mens Shed for
their time and skills, and our
members who organised, bought and
sold tickets.

District Office Bearers FROM WHERE I SIT by David What a week. It started off with the very successful Casino Night at Jack
Heffernan‘s Deck, possibly the best we have ever had. I think so anyway, but
members present aver that I am a little biased. We made a profit of about $500.
The Sausage Sizzle took the highest amount of money for some months, at well in
excess of $300.
The Festival of Performing Arts, organised this year by their Committee and by
the Lions, was another exposition of the outstanding talent to be found amongst
the young people of this Coast. The overall winner was the Woolgoolga Dance
School, who were unable to attend but provided a brilliant video of their entry.
Two pianists were amazing. A 10 year old delivered a very difficult piece - a
Beethoven Sonata, which could have been played by a mature Conservatorium
student - and a teenager performed a medley of very difficult pieces. Violinistes
(I‘m old fashioned - a young lady), singers, dancers. They were all good, and it
must have been a terrible job to pick the award winners this year. Our trophy went
this year to the Gold Coast, to a primary student at All Saints School, for an
excellent Speech and Drama entry.
Well, that was the good news. On the other side of the ledger: Judy and Len had
just returned to us from their son‘s serious illness, just getting their lives together
again, when this blow struck, told in PE Judy‘s own words:
I am so sorry that I have had to cancel the high tea. Len is unwell with a broken
neck. It is his c2 and broken in two places. He fell outside the back door and came
down so heavily on his head and that caused the fractures. It is not as bad as
before when he also broke his neck but is still very serious. We are waiting for a
special brace to be made for him which will enable him to move safely. At the
moment he is in the Allamanda hospital. Tonight (Wednesday) he has a severe
pain in his ear and hallucinating. The nurse thinks it is the medication but as he
was taken off the endom early yesterday morning I am still concerned as he hit the
back of his head very hard.
I will keep you updated and I am truly grateful for the care and concern you and
The Club have shown to us. It was a great shock after my son being so ill and I am
feeling the effects of it now but will bounce back again.
We extend our thoughts to Judy and Len, and trust they will soon be restored to
us. Meanwhile, Bob Shepherd has taken Len‘s duties and for this we thank Bob.
Kiara James, Rotaract‘s Banana Festival Queen entrant, has a BBQ (Sausage
Sizzle) at the Kingscliff Markets this weekend. She needs some help, and Bryan
Threlfall has kindly agreed to be there. If there are any other members who may
be available to help, please go to Kingscliff beach on Saturday morning and find
the Rotaractors at the markets. This is a real example of outreach: this Club, small
though it is, will assist the younger Club in its plans. I think that‘s a really good
show.
This week we have Richard talking about his latest journey round Australia. Many
will recall his descriptions of the Canning Track a couple of years ago. So we‘ll
be looking forward to this trip.
That‘s it for this week. Let‘s keep leading the way to ENGAGE ROTARY AND
CHANGE LIVES.
Thought of the day
"Men have become the tools of their tools."
- Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
THE OBJECT OF
ROTARY
To encourage and foster
the ideal of service as a
basis of worthy enterprise
and, in particular, to
encourage and foster
1 The development of
acquaintance as an
opportunity for service
2 High ethical standards
i n b u s i n e s s a n d
p r o f e s s i o n s ; t h e
recognition of worthiness
of all useful occupations;
and the dignifying by each
Rotarian of his occupation
as an opportunity to serve
society
3 The application of the
ideal of service by every
Rotarian to his personal,
business and community
life
4 The advancement of
i n t e r n a t i o n a l
understanding, goodwill
and peace through a world
fellowship of business and
professional men united in
the ideal of service
NOTES
of the things
we think, say or do.
1 Is it the TRUTH ?
2 Is it FAIR to all
concerned ?
3 Will it build GOODWILL
and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS ?
4 Will it be BENEFICIAL to
all concerned ?
With more than 100 polio cases between them this year, we were concerned about the outbreak in Somalia and Kenya – and we figured you probably were too. So we asked the World Health Organization for some more information, and were surprised when the head of the polio program globally responded! ―It is absolutely heart-breaking when children are needlessly paralysed by polio. But here’s the encouraging thing: we’re still on track to completely eradicate this virus,‖ said Dr Hamid Jafari, Director of Polio Operations and Research at WHO, pictured below.
―We knew that outbreaks would happen and we’ve planned and budgeted for them. Despite what you may have read recently, at the moment we have enough resources to look after the outbreak and continue to make inroads in the endemics. And we’re definitely making inroads – all three endemic countries have seen a reduction in cases
this year, and there hasn’t been a single case of type 3 polio reported since November last year. ―This is why what everyone involved in The End of Polio campaign has been doing is so important. We need the new polio eradication strategic plan to be fully funded so that we can deal with new outbreaks without pulling resources from the important ongoing work in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Alongside Rotarians, you’ve helped convince the Australian, British and Canadian governments to commit to funding the plan through to completion in 2018.
“Your efforts to encourage world leaders to fund our program mean that we can continue our efforts to reach vulnerable children with the polio vaccine. Thank you and keep up the great work.”
Want to know more about the outbreak in the Horn of Africa? Read this blog post from our superstar Communications Assistant, Mohamed Khairat. All the very best, Michael, Lauren and the rest of The End of Polio crew PS. It looks like we’re on the cusp of convincing the US Congress to make an increased commitment.
Polio Outbreaks in Africa
President David has been advised there are still
vacancies for positions on District Committees.
Members are asked to consider seriously
nominating for positions on these committees as
by doing so a whole new world of Rotary opens
to you.
The time required for most committees is not
onerous, meetings are held at convenient times
and locations.
PLEASE NOTE—The date for contact with the school to
offer your assistance is Thursday August 15. If you are able to
give your time to Wollumbin High School for this worthy
cause please advise Chris Brooker, Karen Connell or Susan
Turner by that date.

Two men are sitting next to each
other in an Irish-style pub in New
York City. They both order pints of
Guinness. One of them turns to the
other and says "So where are you
from, then?"
"I'm from Ireland."
"Me too! I'll drink to that." They
both finish their pints and order two
more.
"Where in Ireland are you from?"
"Dublin."
"Me too! I'll drink to that." They
both finish their pints and order two
more.
"Where in Dublin are you from?"
"The East Side."
"The East Side? Me too! What a
coincidence! I'll drink to that!" They
both finish their pints and order two
more.
"Where on the East Side are you
from?"
"McDonagh Street."
"Me too! This is incredible! I'll drink
to that."
As the bartender pours them another
two pints, another customer at the
bar says to him, "That's amazing! I
can't believe they're from the same
street in Dublin. What's going on?"
"Oh, it's nothing amazing," says the
bartender,"it's just the Ferguson
twins getting sloshed again."
An American businessman is
entertaining some overseas business
guests on the golf course.
The first guest, who is from Italy,
tees off and hits a good shot 200
yards down the fairway. As the
American businessman knows a
small amount of Italian he says:
―Buon tiro‖, which means ―Good
shot‖. The Italian businessman
replies: ―Grazie‖.
The second guest, who is from
France, tees off and hits a fantastic
shot that lands on the green thirty
feet from the hole. As the American
businessman knows a small amount
of French he says: ―Tir fantastique‖,
which means ―Fantastic shot‖. The
French businessman replies:
―Merci‖.
The third guest, who is from Japan,
tees off and amazingly the ball goes
straight in the hole, a hole in one!
The American businessman doesn‘t
know many Japanese words or
phrases but when he dated a
Japanese girl during his overseas
business trips she used to moan
when he made love to her and she
would shout out ―Ura-ana, ura-ana‖,
and which he repeats to his Japanese
guest. The Japanese businessman
replies: ―What do you mean, wrong
hole?‖
A priest and a rabbi were sharing a compartment on a train. After a while, the
priest put down his book and said to the Rabbi, "I know that in your religion
you're not supposed to eat pork... but have you really never ever tasted it?"
The rabbi closed his newspaper and replied, "I must tell you the truth. Yes I
have, on the odd occasion."
The rabbi then had his turn to interrogate. He asked, "I know that in your
religion you're supposed to be celibate... but..."
The priest interrupted, "Yes, I know what you are going to ask, and yes, I have
succumbed to temptation once or twice."
The two continued with their reading and there was silence for a while.
Then the rabbi peeked past his newspaper and said, "Better than pork, isn't it?"

The Club Song
We‘ve come to introduce you to the Murwillumbah Central boys,
The way you know that we‘re around is when you hear the noise,
There‘s tenors, basses, inbetweens, and some just here for show,
But all the same we‘ll sing to you, so boys just ‗Let ‗er go‘.
When Governor Georgie, gave us our charter,
He kissed our Rotaryannes to make it right,
We‘ve come to greet you, because we‘re after,
All the fun and fellowship that‘s going tonight.
So put it there!
