After working for four years in the family’s Rhodes and Mills Gen- eral Store in Zachary, Mills decided to take the federal civil service exam which he passed with flying colors. “After I qualified on my civil ser- vice test, I got a job as a Rural Mail Carrier on Route 1 out of Zachary,’’ Mills recalled. “That was what I was doing plus raising cattle when WWII broke out. “Three of the four men on Mount Rushmore were surveyors at one time in their lives, and the fourth, Teddy Roosevelt, caused many surveyors to be employed with his wide range of National Parks and conservation practices, so I know that we are in an old and honorable occupation,’’ Mark Williams, Professional Land Survey-or, told the Feliciana Explorer.

G360, LLC is located at 9502 Main Street in Zachary. Originally formed in May of 2011 in Clinton, G360 LLC moved to its Zachary location in October 2012. They are building a 40’x100’ warehouse be-hind their office building. Within this building will be a 20’x40’ training room in addition to a planned full in-strument service and repair facility.

“Our business model is to be a full service supply and support company for the land surveyors, construction personnel, and oil industry that rely on precise positional systems instru-ments,’’ Don Biggs, a resident of Clinton and one of the two partners

in G360 LLC explained. “Whereas a typical GPS will pinpoint a loca-tion to within 20 yards, our GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) instrument will pinpoint a location to within a ½ inch.”

Biggs worked for 7 years as the Louisiana Direct Sales representative for Leica Geosystems before starting G360 LLC with Mark Williams. Wil-liams was also with Leica Geosys-tems for 7 years in their Lawrencev-ille, Georgia office before returning to his roots in Clinton/Zachary.

The Leica Geosystems AG is home based in Heerbrugg, Switzer-land. It has been around since 1910. There are two other Leica brands, Leica Cameras AG in Solms, Germa-ny, and Leica Microsystems GmbH

located in Wezler, Germany that are part of the giant Hexagon AG Corpo-ration headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.

“In our first two years, we have conducted two seminars on the GNSS systems, one in Nants, France and an-other 4 week seminar in Baton Rouge for international personnel with the oil and gas industry,” Williams noted. “We want to be more than just a ven-dor or supplier for our Geomatic cus-tomers. We provide not only training with each piece of equipment that we sell but we also provide a unique ser-vice in that surveyors and other users of our equipment can call us with their geomatic problems in the field.”

Zachary High Cheerleaders Finish Busy Summer, Prepare for Football SeasonThere is more to cheerleading

than meets the eye. The Zachary High School Cheerleaders not only cheer at football and basketball games, they represent Zachary High and the Community of Zachary through volunteer service and com-petitions both locally and nationally. In fact, the cheerleaders were invit-ed to be a part of the Sugar Bowl halftime performance on January 3, 2014.

In June, the cheerleaders at-tended UCA cheer camp at Fort Walton Beach, FL. After a week of hard work, the team placed 1st in sideline and cheer performances, and 2nd in Home Pom and Extreme Routine performances. The team brought home the coveted “whale”. This award, a HUGE whale, is pre-sented to the team that was spirited, showed good leadership, and had the most fun at camp. The team also had 6 girls that won All American Cheerleader. The six chosen were seniors Dani Morse, Taylor Matte, Madison Monte, and Mallory Bush, sophomore Shelby Bush, and fresh-man Taylee Corkern.

Not only did the team compete at camp this summer, they volunteered at First Baptist Church of Zachary with cheer camp. Each summer First Baptist hosts a cheer camp headed up by Amie Stagg. This year the team wanted to help. They know

how much these young girls look up to them, and hope to one day be a Zachary High Cheerleader. What better way to help the next genera-tion of future cheerleaders!

The beginning of school and football season is right around the

corner. The cheerleaders will be selling spirit shirts during the 2nd week of school. They will also be selling spirit tattoos with the Z logo and red poms for the fans at football games this year. They want to per-sonally invite the entire community of Zachary to come out and support our program and cheer on the foot-ball team!

City of Zachary Receives Honorable Mention at LMA Convention

Williams has 25 years of experi-ence in Geomatics and is a licensed Professional Land Surveyor and Board Certified in the states of Loui-siana and Mississippi. He holds a de-gree in Surveying and Mapping from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. Williams began his career as a rodman and worked his way up to product manager/staff surveyor at Surveying/Engineering consulting businesses prior to G360.

The third member of the G360 team is Barrett Smith, also a resident of Clinton. Smith, who holds a B.S. degree from LSU, began his survey-ing career as a rodman for surveying Crew chief. He is currently working on obtaining the needed hours in sur-veying and mapping to sit for the li-cense exam for surveyors.

“Although our Geosystem instru-ments cut most surveying crews down from 3 to 2, these instruments still require a line of sight which means that the old brush hook is still part of surveying,’’ Williams acknowledged. “There are actually a few one-man surveying crews, but with only one person, they are limited to a specific range of tasks they can perform.”

“We still carry brush hooks in our inventory along with metal pipes and rods to establish a survey location point of reference,” Williams added. “We also handle flagging, metal de-tectors, files for the brush hook and even bug spray in our one stop sur-veyor supplier system. G360 actually has over 2,000 product lines.’’

“We believe that a big market ex-ists in the construction industry as well as the oil and gas industry for our products,’’ Biggs explained. “Our

three most sophisticated or high tech pieces of equipment are the GNNS, the Sprinter 150 M (memory) that is a precision leveling instrument that can be downloaded to an Excel file, and our Rugby 100 LR (long range) instrument. This instrument is exact in both leveling and location up to a 2,000 foot radius.”

“Another popular instrument because of what it can do is the Ro-botic Total Station which calculates and shoots angles and coordinates. However, the first question that I ask a prospective customer is, ‘What is your work flow, and what do most of your jobs entail.’ Once I have that information, then I try to develop the right package of equipment for him to use. I don’t want to sell anyone an in-strument that is not going to help them make money.’’

“In our careers as surveyors, or in geomatics, as some like to be called today, we saw a real disconnect be-tween sales, service and follow-up,’’ Williams related. “Too many dealers want to sell you the equipment with a DVD and a manual and let you figure it out. We first want to field train them on how to use the instrument they purchase and then we want to be their resource when they have problems to solve. We want them to think of G360 as their valuable resource.

The other employee of the fledging innovative firm is Dory King of Zach-ary. Dory serves as the accounting manager of the firm.

Writer’s note: It seems that the business model that G360 has chosen, a total resource for their product mar-ket, is working. It is not an everyday occurrence when a couple of guys from the Clinton/Zachary area conduct sem-inars in France or even in Baton Rouge for that matter for international clients.

G360 continued from page 2

degree Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis Tennessee. Dr. Chaney is currently employed as an Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at RKM Primary Care in Clinton, LA. and West Baton Rouge “WBR” Primary Care in Port Allen, LA. He recently attained Na-tional Certification through the Ameri-can Nursing Credentialing Center as

a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. This additional certification now allows him to treat patients of all ages. Primary Care Pro-viders for a Healthy Feliciana, Inc. is

This net-work provides services to residents of the parishes of East and West Felici-ana, East and West Baton Rouge, Liv-ingston, Tangipahoa, and portions of southwest Mississippi. RKM accepts Medicare, Medicaid, private insur-ance, and private pay utilizing sliding scale fees based on an individual’s in-come. Regarding his employment at RKM Primary Care, Dr. Chaney says, “I am excited about my employment at RKM and I enjoy coming to work because of the family atmosphere and the quality of service we provide. It is rewarding to know that I am able to help a group of individuals that is of-ten unable to receive the services we

provide, either because they have no insurance or limited ability to pay. The sliding scale fee for service allows me to help more people than possible in a private practice situation.”

Dr. Chaney received a Registered Nurse Diploma from Our Lady of the Lake School of Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Our Lady of the Lake College, and a Mas-ter of Science in Nursing degree from Southeastern Louisiana. He is a gradu-ate of Baker High School and is the son of the late John H. Chaney “J.H.” and Marion Chaney of Zachary. He has been a resident of Zachary for over 20 years. Zachary. I liked being a rural mail carrier. I did serve on the Bank of Zachary for many years and was elected Chairman at one time. I fi-nally told them that I wanted to take the Emeritus title,’’ Mills concluded.

Writer’s note: The last time I in-terviewed a 99 year old man before Mr. Mills, was former governor and

legendary gospel music singer, Jim-mie Davis. To further put 99 years of living into perspective that means that a person has lived at least 36,125 days. Happy birthday to you, Mr. Albert Carter Mills, Jr., on your upcoming 100th birthday and may you be blessed with many more!
