ake a jog along any of the PCNs (Park Connecting Networks) during

weeknights or weekends, and you’ll probably be overtaken many times by cyclists on all kinds of bicycles. Drivers, too, will no doubt have experienced a similiar increase in the number of cyclists flocking to the roads to get a good workout.

There’s no doubt that cycling is getting more popular here. While the east is home to many boutique bike shops and cycling routes, the west has much to offer as well.

“I love biking in the west,” said Abner Yong, 34, a Bukit Panjang resident and avid cyclist. “There’s plenty of open space and the traffic

Although trail riding on mountain bikes is gaining a strong following, the two most common forms of cycling in Singapore are still park cycling and road cycling.

Park riders ride leisurely in the relative safety of manicured parkways (think PCN) that are free from motor traffic. Cycling speeds tend to be on the low side, ranging between 15km/h and 30km/h.

“I LOVE BIKING IN THE WEST... THERE’S PLENTY OF OPEN SPACE AND THE TRAFFIC IS NOT TOO HEAVY.”

Road warriors, on the other hand, tend to zip on the flanks of roads in their striking jerseys and lightweight speed machines. Riding speeds are typically north of 25km/h, although it is not uncommon to see them ride at speeds in excess of 35km/h.

Regardless of the kind of rider you are, you can do both from your Bukit Batok clubhouse – check out two routes on the next page. As always, stay alert, look out for traffic and be considerate. Have a safe ride!

POTEATOotatoes and tea – an odd combination? That’s right, PoTeaTo sells

mainly potato-esque creations and tea. The selection of the latter is provided by a local supplier and boasts refreshing flavours such as Oolong Berry and Persian Apple & Ginger ($7.80 per pot), while the potato specialties range from simple chips (no, they’re not from the packet) to sweet potato fries and cost about $5 to $6.

With a variety of bar bites, hearty eats, tempting cocktails and a laid-back atmosphere to boot, it’s easy to see why you’d want to hang out here all night long. Their Bacon Cherry Bombs ($6), Pan-seared Tuna with Mayonnaise ($12), and crazy concoctions like the Chuck Norris ($21) are a must-try.

If you’re new to the place, you certainly wouldn’t have trouble deciding what to order, thanks to the huge pictures of their bestsellers on the walls. Top picks include the Dakgalbi, which is a spicy mishmash of chicken chunks, Korean rice cakes and vegetables, and Suyuk – steamed, tender pork belly slices.

3 REASONS TO CATCH IT

n the year 2154, our world is divided in two classes of people: the super-wealthy elite who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, chaotic

Why forex? Forex is predictable, which makes it easier for one to profit from repeating patterns and movements. I can buy and sell easily, and I can start trading with as little as just $1,000. Most forex brokers also provide sophisticated platforms that help you manage your risk easily and provide all the charts and data you need to do your trade.

Know your stuff. Forex is not for those who want to try their luck or get rich quick. Forex is for those with a deliberate trading strategy and risk control plan. You need the right mindset and method, and a desire to make this your second income.

Be realistic in your expectations on profit and loss. Do not be reckless in forex trading. Proper forex training on methods and N

What is forex trading?Forex trading refers to the buying and selling of foreign currencies (aka foreign exchange, forex or FX). The idea is simple: To make a profit, you buy currencies that are predicted to rise in value, and you sell those that are predicted to drop in value.

The good news is you don’t need to be a financial expert to understand forex trading. With the proper training and mindset, you can be your own forex trader, develop your own trading plan and create a viable source of income for yourself.

Why should I consider forex trading? Forex trading is getting more popular for many Singaporeans to make more money. Here’s why:• Low start-up cost. Little capital is required to start trading, as cost of trading is low and little start-up deposit is required. Plus, forex trading platforms are virtually free.• Trade anytime. Market access is available around the clock, since the global forex market operates 24 hours a day.• Trade anywhere. Traders can use smartphones with internet access to log in and trade.• Forex is scalable. You can choose to trade – and earn – as much as you can afford.

Whether you’re a working professional, shift worker or stay-at-home mum, forex trading offers a lifestyle with work-life balance and flexible hours. The playing field is also level, because you don’t need to be a financial expert to be a successful forex trader.

risk management will help make you a more profitable trader. So learn the right strategy, and trade smart.

Forex has given me freedom. I can trade anytime, anywhere. I can earn while I sleep, and earn while I shop, with just a few trades a week. As long as I’m online, I can log on my trading platform, access my charts, do my analysis and place my orders. Many of my students are working professionals who trade during their lunch hour. Many trade while they are on family holidays.

At TerraSeeds, we equip students with sound methods that work in all market conditions. Everyone who comes to us has one aim – to make more money from forex trading – and we guide them to make their dream come true.

YOUR FREE INTRODUCTION TO FOREXWhy you should trade forex – and why it helps to learn from experts like TerraSeeds

Trading in foreign currencies seem shrouded in mystery – until now. Read on to find out what forex is and why you should consider forex trading, and how you can grasp the fundamentals and minimise risk with a good forex trainer.

Page 11: Frontline (Jul/Aug'13)

Forex offers flexibility and work-life balance for me. I trade mainly in the European and US markets. This means I can do what I want in the early part of the day, and trade in the later part of the day when these markets open. I can monitor rates and trade anywhere, so long as there is an internet connection.

Forex is more “transparent” compared to the stock market. You are only concerned with macroeconomic factors that affect a country’s currency. For news that affect currencies, there are usually some indicators of impending change. This means it’s easier to read the trends for forex than for

•SELF-EMPLOYED•TRADINGINFOREXFORTHREEYEARS

DANIEL KU, 46

stocks, which can be a lot more volatile.

It takes effort and experience to get it right. Don’t expect to learn everything overnight. Although I monitor the rates regularly, now I take only a few minutes to look at each trade, and then I’m free to do other things. Persevere and you shall succeed.

TerraSeeds provided me a structured way of analysing the market and trading probability. I like how Binni and her trainers would share their experience and thinking process without reserve. With their guidance, I was able to trade far better than learning on my own or from friends.

Why should I learn from forex trainers like TerraSeeds? If you’re new to forex trading, learning the ropes from a reputable forex trainer will shorten your learning curve and avoid pitfalls, and enable you to hit the road running with the correct techniques and values right from the start. As with any form of trading or investment, there’s always an element of risk involved in forex trading. Proper training is your best way to keep your risk to a minimum.

A good trainer will never promise instant success or methods that have no risk. Professional trainers like TerraSeeds make it clear there is no shortcut to success, and they aim to impart the right skills so that their students can make their own decisions on how they trade. In a way it’s like showing you how to fish, so that you can fish for a lifetime.

Everyone who comes to us has one aim – to make more money from forex trading – and we guide them to make their dream come true.

But just like every fisherman, and their preferred catch, are different, no two traders are alike. We all differ in terms of our expectation of returns, risk tolerance and amount of trading capital. To TerraSeeds, it is important that every trader formulate their own plan that is tailored to their trading style.

In addition to understanding the fundamentals and analysing economic indicators, TerraSeeds’ courses also share with students the psychology of forex trading – how to manage emotions and the mindset it takes to succeed. It is this combination of both hard and soft skills, as well as plenty of effort, that is needed to make forex work for you.

Frontline speaks to two local forex traders – a veteran forex trainer and a newbie trader – who share why forex has worked for them, and why it pays to have solid fundamentals and a structured approach in tackling the forex market.

am in a business that supports SCDF’s mission and is also in line with my

mission in life. My company provides preventive medicine services, such as health screening, MRI, PET, X-ray, ultrasound and CT scans. By doing their screening with us, patients can cut down their waiting time for such tests, and this is important for those with serious illnesses.

It is rewarding to save lives. Some of my former patients still call me up to ask me to recommend good medical specialists for them.

I am fortunate to be part of a “Dream Team”. My CEO, Dr Wong Weng Hong, served his ORNS as a

I live to learn. I’m an engineer by training, but I continue to study whenever I can. Althought I already have a Doctorate in Management, I believe in lifelong learning and regularly attend courses to update myself with the latest from management to patient safety.

Studying keeps me current with new medical advances, new drugs on the market and new patient safety issues, and I have gained a lot from networking during my courses.

Recipient of Home Team NSmen of the Year Award 2012

The more you learn, the more you feel there’s so much more to know.

It was an eye-opener to be part of an inaugural overseas exercise as an NSman. I was the Deputy Contingent Commander of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and Disaster Relief Exercise (DiREx), which was held from 7 to 11 May 2013 in Cha-am, Thailand.

For five days I trained with other regular forces – such as US Marines, Korean rescuers, Japanese troops, UN personnel, Australian Defence Force and Royal Thai Army – in building collapses, height rescue, rock slides and more. I learnt how rescuers from different countries work together in a disaster zone.

There are no bad soldiers, only bad generals. I’m only as good as my men, and I learn a lot from them.

My NSman days were actually more siong than my NSF days. I served my ICTs in KINS AK3 Alpha Division. KINS was a new unit then and my role was like that of a trooper. I had to undergo three ICTs to train for the job.

I love theatre, for it is life itself. It is a mirror of what society is and it helps us understand our world. Wild Rice is producing fantastic work such as Cooling Off Day by Alfian Sa’at and Ivan Heng, and I’m honoured to be on their board of directors.

It is an exciting time in the local art scene. We are still searching for our Singapore identity. Local artists should work together to build a vibrant arts scene.

Started in 1996 to promote a healthy lifestyle among Home Team NSmen, the REAL Run has become one of HomeTeamNS’ most-loved events and a mainstay in the local sporting calendar.

There’s also a 3km Fun Walk and a 500m Kids’ Beach Dash for the young ones.

he Home Team just got stronger – and younger – as 550 student leaders from 29

primary schools were appointed as Junior Civil Defence Lionhearters.

At the appointment ceremony held at Elias Park Primary School on 11 April, A/P Ho Peng Kee, Chairman of the Home Team Volunteer Network, has a clear message to the young Lionhearters. “You are part of a movement,” he said.

The SCDF established the Lionhearters Club to raise interest in emergency preparedness and nurture members to become resilient and crisis-ready citizens.

With the Junior Civil Defence Lionhearters Programme, upper primary students leaders are chosen to inculcate emergency preparedness skills among their peers, family and the community.

T

OUR NEW YOUNG LIONS

In all, 30 such students from Elias Park Primary School were selected to be part of this pilot run.

To fulfil their roles as Emergency Preparedness Ambassadors, the Junior Lionhearters will learn skills such as basic first aid and fire safety. They will also be trained in public speaking and engaging the media to help them spread fire safety and emergency preparedness messages in their schools and beyond.

After leaving primary school, Junior Lionhearters could carry on with the National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC) in secondary schools and the Civil Defence Lionhearters Club in post-secondary institutes.

“This programme is helpful,” said nine-year-old Narengautham from Elias Park Primary School. “When there is an emergency, I know what to do. When somebody is injured, I know what the procedure is.”

The SCDF established the Civil Defence Lionhearters Club in October 2009.

There are five Lionhearters Clubs with 350 members in Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic and all three ITE Colleges.

This new initiative by SCDF will see the Junior Lionhearters Club established in 29 primary schools with 900 new student members.

FORCE DEVELOPMENT

New changes announced to boost capabilities of critical NS asset

COOL UNDER PRESSURE

he SCDF is set to enhance the capabilities of its Rescue Battalion

(RBn) in a series of changes to its structure, equipping and training.

This was announced on 19 April by Deputy Prime Minister Mr Teo Chee Hean at ITE College East during the SCDF’s Workplan Seminar 2013.

Established in 1985, the RBn is the SCDF’s main ORNS unit. The SCDF has been reviewing the RBn’s ability to handle more complex rescue operations, and has taken reference from guidelines developed by the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group.

These changes (see side story) will be implemented in phases, where RBn NSmen will be progressively trained to acquire new rescue proficiencies.

t takes a certain kind of character to stay cool and lead his men in the

face of adversity.SGT Farhan Firdaus Bin

Darman, 21, was certainly a role model for all firefighters.

The Section Commander from Paya Lebar Fire Station was awarded the SCDF’s inaugural NSF of the Year title for 2012.

This annual award, which was unveiled at the launch of the Lifesavers’ Hall of Fame on 18 March, seeks to recognise the most distinguished NSF at the force-wide level.

SGT Farhan had shown outstanding performance and leadership in many fire and rescue incidents (see side story).

“I would like to thank SCDF for giving me the opportunity to make a difference during my NS,” said SGT Farhan.

T I COURAGE UNDER FIREWhy SGT Farhan Firdaus

is NSF of the Year 2012

Hotel fire on 16 July 2012,

he led the first team of

firefighters to the scene,

where they battled the

COMING UPWhat’s new in SCDF’s

Rescue Battalions

Rescue Engineers will

HQ to help commanders

HONOURING SPF’S TOP NS UNITSCentral Police Division’s NS unit and Airport Police KINS among this year’s winners

entral Police Division’s NS unit and Airport Police KINS unit were crowned

the best NS units for 2012. Both units received this honour from DPM Teo Chee Hean at the Police Day Parade held at the Home Team Academy on 3 June.

Introduced in 1997, the Best Police National Service (PNS) Land Division Competition aims to recognise PNS Land Divisions for their efforts in NS excellence. In 2012, the competition was renamed the Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit Competition (BNSORUC).

The NS unit of Central Police Division emerged champion for this

year, with NS Commander DAC (NS) Lionel Chai Yee Yuen receiving the inaugural BNSORUC award. The NSmen of ‘A’ Div were the first runner-up in the last two years.

The Best Key Installations Unit Competition aims to motivate the KINS troopers towards excellence and accord due recognition to the KINS units that have performed well for the year.

This year’s winner was Airport Police KINS, with Commanding Officer DSP (NS) Benjamin Chew receiving the award. This is the third time in four years that the unit has won the award.

Well done to all our winners!

Tell us a little about yourself.I’ve worked mostly in clubs and associations. It’s a lot of fun to plan and build up clubhouses, and I am thankful for the experience and knowledge I gained in SAFRA.

I find it a great joy to work with our NSmen volunteers, who provide valuable advice in helping their own club grow. We have nine new committees in HomeTeamNS, and I am thankful to have their support.

So why did I move from SAFRA to HomeTeamNS? I’m driven by the unknown, and at this stage of my career, HomeTeamNS presents me with the opportunity to make a difference – to me this is a chance of a lifetime.

What’s next for HomeTeamNS?I want to add a lot more value to our club membership. We’re working to enhance our perks and privileges, so that our members can enjoy benefits both in and out of the clubhouse.

Our clubhouses are set to become more happening. We’re working with merchants to bring retail space into the clubhouse. Existing facilities such as the swimming pool and gym will get a refreshing revamp.

Here’s a sneak peek. Our Chinatown clubhouse will be ready

Anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Our members comprise the singles, those who are married, and those married with kids, and we try to identify what would interest each of these three groups. Right now we can have more clubbing, entertainment and travel privileges, so that’s what our members can expect really soon.
