What to do
HIKINGThe Southern Drakensberg offers superb hiking opportunities to all, young and old, fit and unfit. From short rambles to overnight hiking, experience the views, the peace and swims in mountain streams.
Most of the walks are in the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, administered by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. All hikers on KZN Wildlife land must purchase an entry permit first. Always take a waterproof jacket with you when hiking—the weather can change very quickly in the berg! Also pack energy food, a water bottle, sunscreen and a cap. Hiking maps are sold at the KZN Wildlife base offices as well as the following shops: The Giants Cup T5, Southern Drakensberg Information Office U
OVERNIGHT HIKING, SELF-GUIDED
The Giants Cup Trail runs for 5 days from Sani Pass to Bushman’s Nek. Days are a maximum of 12km long, the trail is easy to follow and well marked. Nights are spent in hiking huts, which can accommodate up to 30 hikers. For bookings contact KZN Wildlife Reservation Office: 033 8451000. www.kznwildlife.com

Many beautiful and varied day walks give one a real feel for the magic of the Drakensberg mountains without carrying a heavy backpack. Take the family for a wonderful walk, swim and picnic!

Eagle Trail 13km +- 5hrs. Spectacular views of the high berg, leads through indigenous forest & grassland plains. Follows several streams, with a large waterfall enroute.
Emandundwini Trail 12km +- 4hrs. Through protea savanna, indigenous montane forest, grassland plains & along streams. Excellent bird watching and magnificent views. Some steep inclines.
Jacobs Ladder Trail 2km. Follows the Lotheni River and leads to the spec-tacular Jacobs Ladder Waterfall. Numerous pools along the route, perfect for swimming. Easy gradient.

Emerald Stream Trail 20km. Follows the valley between the Ndlovini Mountain and Emerald Dome, leads to Pinnacle Rock, situated on a grassland plateau. Many pools are found along the route. Good for bird watching and game viewing. Steep in parts.
Gxalingenwa River Trail 3hrs. Along Gxalingenwa River, passing indigenous forest, which leads to a spectacular waterfall with pools suitable for swimming. Good bird watching. Gentle gradient. Starts on Sani Pass Road T5
Pholela River Trail 15km. Follows Pholela river. Spectacular views of the Giants Cup, many pools suitable for swimming. Indigenous forest in the upper reaches. Gentle gradient.

Hidden Valley You determine when to turn back. This hike up the Mzimude valley offers geologically interesting formations & unusual erosion features. Gentle climb.
Pillar Cave 6km 3-4 hrs. A fairly easy walk, not many steep sections, lovely scenery, combined with various pools, ideal for swimming.
The Rhino 18km. Severe to extreme, only for the very fit. A full day is required for this trail up to Rhino Peak. Offers magnificent views.

Southern Africa’s highest mountain peak is accessible via Mkhomazi Pass at Vergelegen with a magnificent overnight cave en route. Ample water is available along the way.

SANI PASS
The only road leading from kwaZulu-Natal into the Kingdom of Lesotho, peaking at 2874m. Originally a mule track, it is still a tortuous, hair-raising road today. Conquer it! Passports are required at the border post (Children need passports, too). No photocopies or certified copies will be accepted. Certain nations also require a visa. Enquire with the Tour operators.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
Underberg is fast growing into one of the premier mountain biking destinations in South Africa. Some of the most popular MTB races in the country such as Sani2C and Joberg2C use trails in the Underberg area.
Underberg is also home to other 2-day MTB stage races. The Sani Dragon, (www.sanidragon.co.za), includes summiting the iconic Sani Pass, and the Drak Descent is hosted at the popular Sani Spoors (see below). The numerous district roads in the Underberg area provide endless scenic riding routes with varying distance and climbing requirements. Sani Pass offers a strenuous and technical 42km ride up/down the pass - starting from the Sani Pass Hotel. Passports are necessary. A shorter (28km) non technical but very scenic ride is also available to the SA border post.
All private farms in the area are unfortunately not available to visiting cyclists. Strictly by arrangement, riding on certain farms only, is restricted to Drak MTB Club members only. By paying your dues and not trespassing you will be assisting greatly in preserving the privilege to ride in this beautiful area.

BIRDINGAround the world bird watching is the most popular outdoor activity after gardening but in the Drakensberg and Lesotho it is THE most popular outdoor activity for visitors. This region holds a number of unique species that birders come from all over South Africa and overseas to see and includes majestic raptors, vultures, cranes and bustards. The most sought-after species in the Drakensberg Mountains and Lesotho are Drakensberg Siskin, Drakensberg (Orange-breasted) Rockjumper, Mountain Pipit and Bearded Vulture. In the mist-belt forests and mist-belt grasslands of Donnybrook and Creighton the most charismatic species are Cape Parrot, Orange Ground Thrush and Blue Swallow. In the upland grasslands look for Wattled, Blue and Grey-crowned Cranes, Denham's Bustard and Secretarybird.
