DRAKENSBERG DISTRICT 2015 – 2016 ASSEMBLY’S JOURNAL

26th District Assembly held on the 16th January 2016 At ARTHURSEAT MISSION CENTER “Holiness unto the Lord”

PREAMBLE

The task of the church of the Nazarene is to make known to all people the transforming grace of God Through the forgiveness of sins and heart cleansing in Jesus Christ. Our mission first is to “make Christlike disciples in the nations,” to incorporate believers into fellowship and membership (congregations), and to equip (teach) for ministry all who respond in faith. The ultimate goal of the “community of faith” is to present everyone perfect in Christ (Colossians 1:28) at the last day. It is in the local church that the saving, perfecting, teaching, and commissioning takes place. The local church, the Body of Christ, is the representation of our faith and mission. These churches are grouped administratively into districts and regions. The bases of unity in the Church of the Nazarene are those beliefs, polity, definitions, and procedures as articulated in the Manual of the Church of the Nazarene. The core of this unity is declared in the Articles of Faith of the Manual. We encourage the church in all regions and languages to translate – widely distribute – and teach these beliefs to our constituency. This is the golden strand), that is woven into the fabric of all we are and do as Nazarenes. A visible reflection of this unity is represented by the General Assembly, which is the “supreme doctrine – formulating, lawmaking, and elective authority of the Church of the Nazarene.” (300) A second reflection is the international General Board, which represents the entire church. A third reflection is the Board of General Superintendents, who may interpret the Manual, approve cultural adaptations, and ordain to the ministry. The government of the Church of the Nazarene is representative, and thus avoids the extremes of episcopacy on the one hand and unlimited congregationalism on the other. In global regions served by the church where cultural and political differences may necessitate, adaptations of local, district, and regional church government procedures contained in Part IV, Chapters I, II, and III (sections 100, 200, 300), may be made. Requests for all such adaptations shall be submitted in writing to and approved by the Board of General Superintendents. (Manual page 62-63). The Board of General Superintendents: 1. Dr. Jerry D. Porter 2. Dr. Eugen’nio’ R. Duarte 3. Dr. David A. Busic 4. Dr. Gustavo A. Crocker 5. Dr. Jackie K. Warrick 6. Dr. David W. Graves

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT

3.1 Vision

A vision is a compelling picture of the future. It involves the heart and minds of the members of the church. During the strategic planning session the vision of the Drakensburg District of the Church of the Nazarene was considered. The meaning of the vision for the district was outlined as follows: “Drakensberg District aim to build a united congregation that will want to take a leadership role in providing the Word of God to the lost souls with a sole aim of turning them into Christians. This leading role will be done in consideration of the holiness that we are expected to lead our lives”. The vision of the Drakensburg District was confirmed as:

“To be the′ united and leading District in winning souls through Holiness.”

3.2 Mission

A mission describes the purpose of a church. It describes the focus for the district. The mission addresses the objectives of the church as stipulated in the church manual. The mission of the Drakensburg District was also confirmed as:

THE DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT FOR 2015

The General Superintendent in jurisdiction, Dr. Eugene Duarte, Regional Director Dr. Filimao Chambo, Field-Strategical-Coordinator Rev. Harry M. Maluleke, the NTC Principal Reverend Catherine S. Lebese, Members of the District Advisory Board, District Advisory Council, Pastors, delegates, visitors and dear friends. I greet you in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I thank the Lord for granting me this opportunity to present this exceptional report, and I anticipate that, together we will direct our District to her highest peak. I appreciate and truly respect what our former district superintendent Rev. Chirwa did in terms of developing the District. Everyone is expected to continue from where he ended. We are very sorry of his sudden passing on. We still send our condolence to the family, for the loss and we pray that the Almighty God help them as they face life without him, and that God will meet their needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19). Here is a summary of where we come from these past two years:

Year FM AM NDMI NMI NYI

2014 4142 - 2183 884 1791

2015 4582 487 4025 2033 1750

LICENSED PASTORS Before I continue with my report, Mr. Chairperson, I would request the Board of Credentials to give their report first. Then we can continue to give licenses to their rightful owners. In addition, I would like to present an ordination certificate to Rev. Muriel Sarah Mambane. NAZARENE DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRIES INTERNATIONAL We are so grateful for the great effort Pastor Ndlovu L is putting in NDMI:

Children’s Camp: 287 children assembled at Arthurseat;

25

Caravan: 216 attended Caravan; and

63 graduated to junior youth.

Women’s ministry: 70 came to a night prayer at Arthurstone; 137 turned up for a week with Jesus in Swadini and at the extravaganza, we had 200 attendees.

Men’s Ministries: The highlight of Men’s ministry was a trip to Cape Town in October.

Young Adult Ministries: 59 members appeared at the Mariti meeting,

Senior Citizens: 26 members were present at the service in Dwarsloop and 51 turned up at Arthurseat.

Family and Marriage & Single Parents ministries last year 25 members attended but this year 45 assembled in Green Valley, this showed a tremendous growth.

Pastor’s Wives & Women’s Pastors had established this new ministry. Five families had been supported and they had one night prayer at Dwarsloop Church of the Nazarene.

We give NDMI credits for the following achievements: 1. NDMI managed to buy District NDMI banner. 2. NDMI bought 90 gowns, 90 caps and 90 belts for graduation ceremonies. 3. 132 children gave themselves to Christ in the Camp Meeting. 4. Women and Men’s ministries were able to present gifts to pastors for Christmas. 5. Men’s trip to Cape Town was very much successful as indicate previously.

NAZARENE YOUTH INTERNATIONAL Unfortunately the NYI membership dropped with a loss of 41 members. But we appreciate some of the achievement. The committee purchased an NYI banner which all are proud of. Managed to have NYI or Golf T Shirts to be identified with. The highlight was the wrapping up of a summer camp at Mopani South East FET College. Over 150

young people came. The number increase as the days progressed. Zonal Rallies attendance:

First: Zone A 26 attended; Zone B 122 appeared; Zone C 68 came and Zone D only 50 turned up. Second: Zone A none; Zone B 55 showed up; Zone C 46 and Zone D none.

Night Prayers: First: Zone A none; Zone B 79 Sand River; Zone C none Zone D none. Second: Zone A none; Zone B 105 Rooiboklagte; Zone C none and Zone D none. Third: Zone A none; Zone B 122 Dingledale; Zone C none and Zone D none.

NAZARENE MISSIONS INTERNATIONAL The NMI Achievements: Able to send eight reps to the 2015 NMI Conference held at GNCC. Three District workshops and three zonal workshops were held and conducted by District Council

and eight representatives from the NMI Regional Conference. Managed to pay our WEF budget R40,000.00. Bought a district NMI banner. All churches during Easter Camp were visited in their respective Zones. Easter Camp was held in four Zonal centres i.e. Mission centre, Shatale, Lulekani and Marite

respectively.

26

Local churches, Zones and the District were able to hold prayer meetings for the needs of God’s people, and for the persecuted church.

A multipurpose centre at Goodhope church of the Nazarene is under construction. A new church construction at Mpisane We also appreciate the new schools in Lulekani, Dwarsloop and Goodhope.

ORGANIZED CHURCHES: We are proud to inform you that within three (3) months we were able to organize four churches: Mountain Church at Boikhutso village (Dwarsloop branch) 35 members; Hazyview Church of the Nazarene 26 members; Mountain View (Maviljan branch) 28 members; Nkanini Church of the Nazarene (Mariti branch) 36 members. If God permits, we are looking forward to organize other mission churches this current year. NEW SITE We went to Matibidi Tribal Authorities to acquire a site for our Church and we were warmly welcomed. The authorities indicated that our application had been received and accepted. They are willing to secure a place as soon as the Christmas holidays are over. We are hopeful that when we contact them again the site will be available.

ARTHURSEAT MISSION STATION It is unfortunate that the mission station has lost its manager Mr. Madlophe Michael through resignation. Moreover, we are happy that in future the school in the mission will be reorganized under the scrutiny of the Property, Mission and School Boards. And we are proud to have Dr. Litswele, Rev. Mathebula DG and Pastor Nxumalo G who will be leading this assignment.

EVANGELISM The statistics of the Evangelism Board displays a remarkable growth, 275 people converted and 784 houses visited during this year in the following churches: Wales, Garden View, Craigeburn, Casteel, Setlare, Mpisane, Arthurstone. We appreciate the achievement of the Board under the leadership of Mr. Sithole SW. Goals and Objectives

1. Our goal is to improve the quality of our churche’s administration, so that we may present accurate membership statistics.

2. We must continue to reach the strategic planning that the Drakensburg District Church of the Nazarene previously set for 2012-2016.

Conclusion I personally thank the District Treasurer, sister Gift Ntlemo, for safeguarding the public funds (District), it was not easy but thank God, enabled her. I also pass my gratitude to the Secretary Mrs. Nxumalo Lebogile for her dedication in conveying the DAB meetings and of keeping the minutes up to date. Again, I pass my appreciation to my Personal Assistant Kgotatso Moropane for excellent performance in the District Office, Keep up the good work. My appreciate also goes to the good work done by the DAB and the DAC. I thank you all for your prayers and your support. In conclusion, I thank my wife for her support and her daily prayers. I sometimes spend hours alone in my office. May the good Lord bless us all.

Big thanks to the Pastors, Zone Leaders and Church Leaders who supported us with their finances, accommodations, transport and gifts. We could not plant any new church due to the followings:

Matibidi and Bamba Matches are still outstanding –DAB to visit the sites allocated and do the payments.

Challenges:

Budget is always a stumbling block, which delays the committee to progress with the required speed.

Lack of resources like tent, cars, instruments etc, for the district. Some members not yet on board

Requests:

34

We would like to request the District treasury to allocate our budget yearly in order for the ministry to accomplish its tasks.

All churches that have completed their renovations/upgrade can donate old furniture to the district for new established churches.

All requests for next year revivals/establishment of new churches should be done via the Secretary (Pastor Maoko) in writing in order to plan accordingly and on time.

We would like to encourage churches to make use of the ministry for revivals and planting of churches, may the Good Lord bless us all. Yours in Christ Sithole SW (Chairperson).

MEMOIRS BOARD REPORT 2015

I greet our Regional Director Dr. F. Chambo, the District Superintendent Rev. W. Tshabalala, all pastors and delegates in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. The Memoir’s board met on the 30th November 2015 at Dwarsloop. Members Present:

1. Rev. Tshabalala W 2. Rev. Malumane R 3. Rev. Maluleke B 4. Mrs. Masuku PM

The committee agreed that Mrs. Masuku be a chairperson and Mr. Nxumalo a secretary. We are so thankful to God for allowing us present this report to the assembly year, this is about our loved ones who pass on:

1. Rev. Chirwa Goodwin our beloved District Superintendent. 2. Mr. Jakie Lakhuleni of Alexandria 3. Mr. Mkhombo of Orinocco B 4. Mrs. Priscilla Mamiane of Dwarsloop

We would like to say, to our brothers and sisters who lost their loved ones: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am (John 14:1-3). Members of our district also lost their loved ones; we deeply pass our condolences, and prayers that the Almighty God may sincerely comfort them. Vision:

1. In future, we are going to draw a constitution or a policy that will assist us to support ministers when they encounter family bereavement within the district.

2. We shall request the Zone leaders at preachers meetings to submit a report about our deceased Nazarene families.

Your In Christ Mrs. Masuku PM

2015 PROPERTIES BOARD REPORT (DD) Greetings in the wonderful name of our Lord Jesus Christ. It had been a year of sorrow and pain to all of us because of the passing away of the late DS Chirwa. We thanked God for His unconditional love displayed to us during the time of our mourning. The death of the late DS Chirwa found us busy renovating the Ds office. The board has not yet finished renovation due to financial constrains experienced by the district during the year. We hope to finish renovation within the coming few months. The board had only received two title deeds. All churches had been informed to submit their title deeds. The board is pleased to announce that church of the Nazarene, Namakgale parsonage had been restored. The recent transformation within the district had led to the board being amalgamated with the two existing (Mission & School) boards. Together with the two mentioned boards, the mission was reviewed where many properties were found to be in need of extreme renovation. There is progress taking place and you will be officially informed in due cause. In future, properties board will no longer operate independently but with the two mentioned boards. Members serving in the properties board are as follows: Pastor Mashego RR, Mr Sidebe (chairperson), Rev Mayisane, Pastor Sithole, DS and Pastor Nxumalo MG (secretary).I thank you

2015 District Conventions Venue: Arthurseat Time: 7H30 Date: 12 December 2015

Programme: 1. Part 1: Sermon 2. Part 2 2.1. NYI Convention 2.2. NMI Convention 2.3. NDMI Convention 3. DS’ Day 4. Announcements 5. Vote of thanks Breakfast: Breakfast was served to all members who were punctual. The conventions were done under one roof, the conventions were opened officially by our District Superintendent. He preached about “The Ownership of the Gospel” based his sermon in Romans Chapter 1. He spoke as if the “Gospel” is a baton which belonged to God the Father, and he gave it to Jesus His Son and Jesus passed it to Paul and Paul was to give it to somebody. Like wise Christians should also pass on the baton to our generation. The DS emphasised that we should not let it fall in our period. NDMI: NDMI began with their election of the NDMI General Assembly delegates. Everything went well. NMI followed and they elected their own delegates. The NYI was the last to take the podium. Mr. R. Mathebula, the NYI President presented his annual report that was positively accepted. The treasurer also gave her report, which was definitely accepted by NYI delegates. There was also an increment as far as the budgets were concerned. This is indicated clearly on the NYI journal. KD Mogale an auditor approved NYI finances officially. Elections for Quadrennial General Assembly 2017 The secretary of the NYI nominating committee read the minutes, and the ballot paper. The results were as follows:

1. Mr. Mathebula RR 2. Rev. Mathebula DG 3. Mrs. Njoni E 4. Rev. Majola FM 5. Mrs. Mashiloana Lucia 6. Ms. Selepe Bophelo 7. Mr. Nxumalo Rerhandzu.

DRAKENSBURG DISTRICT: CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE NDMI REPORT 2014/2015. A Hymn of faith: Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, though the labour of the olive may fail and the fields yield no food, though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls, Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, He will make me walk on my high hills. (Habakkuk 3: 17-19) Greetings: To Our honourable District Superintendent Rev W Shabalala, Ordained Ministers present, Pastors, advisory board, SDMI Council, SDMI members, SDMI delegates, guests, be greeted in the name of JESUS CHRIST our saviour. It gives me great joy to present to you my 2nd report to this convention of the year 2014/2015. Allow me to say 2015 has been a year of difficulty, full of pains, but God taught us to trust in Him. The pass on of our beloved Rev G.B Chirwa wanted to shake us, but in Isaiah 41:10, God Himself Said “Fear not, for I am with you, Be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, yes I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand”. Amen. The mission of Sunday school and Discipleship ministries International is to carry out the great commission to children, youth and adults in preparation for a lifetime of making Christ-like disciples in the nations.

Our Values

1. We value young people (Significant in the kingdom of God.)

2. We value the Bible (Gods unchanging truth for our lives.)

3. We value prayer (vital interactive communication with our heavenly father.)

4. We value discipleship a lifestyle of becoming like Christ.

5. We value holiness.

In order to carry this great commission to children, youth, and adults in making Christ like disciples in the nations, there were men and women who helped me to let this ministry a success. We have women ministry, men ministry, family & marriage, single parents, young adults, children ministry and clergy ministries. Allow me to say: the one to reward you is looking unto you and will do it. Amen.

Acknowledgments As SDMI, we would like to acknowledge those churches that paid their budgets in time.

Those churches that sent their children to attend services in the district.

Acknowledgment goes to the SDMI council, thanks for your team work, keep it up.

We acknowledge the leadership of Rev W Tshabalala (DS) who provided support within this short

period.May the good Lord grant him all best wishes.

Conclusion I would like to thank God for giving us the spirit of team work, SDMI is the root of church of the Nazarene. Thanks to all local churches and pastors who supported us to make this ministry a success. Thanks for your prayers, encouragement and motivations, May the good Lord bless you. Thanks to my family: Skhumbuzo, Bhekimuzi and Nompumelelo for supporting me.As children they did not get the expected motherly love due to the tight schedule of SDMI. I was always away from them due to God’s work. Believe me, this is not for “mahala”, they will be credited. I know that when I’m far from them God is closer to them. Thank you. God bless you!

The District is thankful for Goodhope Church of the Nazarene that invited our Missionary Rev. PC & Shireen Elliot to speak to them during local church revival.

6. ACHIEVEMENTS

We were able to send Eight NMI Reps to the 2015 NMI Conference held at GNCC.

Three District workshops & three zonal workshops were held conducted by District Council and the eight Reps from the NMI Regional Conference.

Managed to pay our WEF budget of R40, 000.00

All churches were visited during Easter Camp in their respective Zones.

Zonal Easter camp held in four centers i.e Mission centre, Shatale, Lulekani & Marite respectively.

Local churches, Zones and the District were able to hold prayer meetings for the needs of God’s people, for the persecuted church.

A multipurpose centre at Goodhope church of the Nazarene is under construction.

A new church construction at Mpisane.

We also appreciate the new schools in Lulekani, Dwarsloop & Goodhope.

7. CONSTRAINS

Not reaching our 2015 WEF target of R200, 000.00

Some churches not honouring NMI budgets.

Some churches depositing NMI funds in wrong accounts.

No monthly reports.

Incorrect statistics.

Poor support by our Pastors and some NMI Presidents.

No NMI office.

Matiko-xikaya church building is a hazard to the entire membership

Dingledale church building is also a hazard to the entire membership but progress is made.

8. APPRECIATIONS

Churches paid their budgets.

% churches paid their WEF budgets

There are signs of growth in some churches in terms of finances and membership.

To NMI council for their hard work.

To the local NMI Presidents for their commitment to God’s work

DS. For his undivided support.

9. The 2015 NMI conference at GNCC

The NMI conference occurred in March 2015 with a number of NMI representatives from around the lusophone and South field, they joined in worship and workshops.

NMI Reps experienced times of inspiration, made new friends from around the field and helped shape the future of Nazarene Missions International.

79

The luke’s commission inspired and motivated the congregants to make Christ like disciples in the Nations.

4. ADMINISTRATION We had four (4 ) council meeting in 2015, One in January for Work shop Planning, One in April for Review and another one in October for Review and also one In November 2015 for Summer Camp and Convention. Most of the meeting were successful thou difficult to keep the time. I thank all the Council members who able to honour the meeting called. Do the same even in Future. 5.NYI DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP

Since last year we have reported growth in N.Y.I . this year we are reporting a steady decline in terms of numbers, this is caused by the lake of understanding in terms of the N.Y.I membership reporting, where by a church report a fall of 79 youth, others 50, 40 in one year or 12 Month, whereby you find two inconsistence reports from the same church. this is a challenge which needs to be urgently tackled to improve our administration . The below figures are of the Churches which managed to submit their reports .the below numbers still needs to be verified with relevant Pastors. The newly organized churches numbers are not added here which could give or show a positive growth.

6.DEATH It is with deep regret to inform you about the passing of two of our Youths Nukeru Treah from Zimmerman and Kakgiso Chiloane from Sehlare Church of the Nazarene, may their soul rest in peace as they wait for the coming of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. 8.ACHIEVEMENTS As a council we worked very hard this year to make sure that some of the planned activities are being achieved in 2015, thou we started on the back foot financial due to the debt that we had from the Money which we had to pay back after it was mistakenly deposited into our account from Maviljan Church of the Nazarene. As a committee we managed to Purchase an N.Y I Burner which all of us can be proud of. Another achievement that we managed this year is an N.Y.I Attire or Golf T Shirt, as it has been our wish that as an Auxiliary we need to be identified by something, therefore we need your support by purchasing the Golf Shirt to Promote N.Y.I . I hereby reporting to you that we have just wrap up a successful Summer camp last week from 4-6 December2015 at Mopani South East FET College. Here are the detailed activities that transpired in 2015 church year. 8.1. ZONAL RALLIES Two Zonal activities were scheduled for the church year 2015 both were successful in zone B and C, Zone A has to postponed the first one, but done in another day, the second one did not materialized due to lake of Zonal committee at Zone A , Zone D as well is having similar problem whereby the elected moves faraway for schools or jobs.

8.2. DISTRICT FUNDRAISING Two district were scheduled for 2015, all two of them were successful, the first one took-place on the 02/05/2015 at Mopani FET College and Pastor Livingstone Sibuyi gave the word of God over 250 youth we accounted for between Eastern And Drankensburg. The second fundraising took place recently at Greenvalley Church of the Nazarene on 02/10/2015, whereby the attendance was not good , with just over 60 youth attending pastor Shongwe S gave the word of God. The issue of Schooling on weekends as well as the Absentia of Zone D made the Attendance to be too low. But make no mistake they service was as big as well all zone combined.

113

8.3.YOUTH CAMPS Two Youth camps were Scheduled in 2015, however the winter Camp has to be Cancelled due to financial constraints. The council took the decision to cancel the camp after realizing that the funds are not enough to can run the camp. As reported earlier we just finished the superb summer camp at Mopani FET College in Phalaborwa, whereby our guest speaker was Rev Mabotja T. P of Okernoordboom Church of the Nazarene. The Theme of the Camp was Raising

New Leadership in the Church of the Nazarene . Over 150 youth were counted on the first day .and the

number increased as the days progresses . 9.WEDDINGS

DRAKENSBURG DISTRICT NYI TREASURER’S REPORT To the District Superintendent, Pastors, our Visitors and all the components of the Church of the Nazarene, I greet you in the Powerful, the wonderful, precious Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am a born again Christian, I love The Lord and committed in doing his Work. Allow me to take this opportunity to thank My Husband for the support he gives towards the work of God. Without Him next to me, I would not make it. And to thank all the churches participated in taking the Ministry to the next level by paying their NYI Budgets. May the Good Lord richly bless them. I thank God, the Almighty, for His favor upon my life; He never let me do anything successfully alone. He is always by my side, He alone is God, in Him I trust and this is the reason He deserves all the honor and the Glory. I am standing before you and before the eyes of the Lord to present the District NYI Financial Report for 2013/2014 as follows: Opening Balance R30,028.90 Income R26091.50 Grand Total R56,120.10 Less Expenses R32,083.79 Closing Balance (as at 30 Sept 2015) R
