SMART CITIESSet in in the “World’s Smartest City”, the program aims to introduce students to the ways the application of the rapidly developing ICT (information communication technologies), opens new possibilities and opportunities to solve some chronic urban problems such as traffic congestion, as well as to handle some newly recognized environmental and social problems such as urban sustainability, resilience, governance, urban planning and the like. STUDENT HOUSINGHousing is available for all international students of the summer programs. The Einstein dormitories are located across the street from the Tel Aviv University main entrance (to the west). Each dormitory suite is divided into two bedrooms; two students sharing each bedroom. Each suite is fully furnished and includes a new kitchen and bathroom, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and cable TV.

The purpose of this course is to explore the many dimensions of new innovative venture creation, development and financing. We will deal with issues such as sources of ideas, type of opportunities, idea development, IP protection, business plan writing, business model design, stages of start-up development, lean startup approach, and sources of finance for new innovative ventures. The examples and cases presented in the course will be taken from the Israeli context. The course will include guest lecturers from the Israeli high tech industry.

In the introduction module we present the entrepreneur’s role in the global economy as an agent of change and accelerator of innovation and economic development. This module will build the theoretical

foundation of the course. The second module deals with sources of ideas, opportunity identification, and idea development. The third module deals with market analysis, business planning, and business model design. The fourth module discusses the unique characteristics of start-up companies and its implications on development and strategy. In this module we will introduce the lean startup approach. The last module presents the venture capital market including business angles, crowdfunding platforms,

accelerators and technological incubators, venture capital funds, and corporate VC. We will discuss the characteristics of each type of investor, the advantages and disadvantages for the start-ups of being financed by different types of investors.

• Scholarships are only offered to currently enrolled students in a university in China

SMART CITIES (4 CREDITS)

THE LAST DECADES HAVE WITNESSED UNPRECEDENTED POPULATION AND URBANIZATION GROWTH WITH THE IMPLICATION THAT TODAY, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HUMAN HISTORY, MORE THAN HALF OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION LIVES IN CITIES. THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS URBANIZATION TREND ALONG WITH THE NOTION OF SMART CITIES ARE THE SETTINGS OF THIS PROGRAM.

Set in the “World’s Smartest City”, the program aims to introduce students to rapidly developing ICT (information communication technologies), and how it opens new possibilities and opportunities to solve some chronic urban problems as well as handle some newly recognized environmental and social problems.

The focus of the program will be on traffic congestion, urban sustainability, resilience, governance and urban planning all while discussing the most prominent issues associated with smart cities such as ethics, transportation, governance, urban planning and design, sustainability and resilience.

The course will take place inside and outside of the classroom and will include visits to Tel Aviv Municipality’s facilities as well as meetings with city officials that deal with Smart City solutions.

The program is in collaboration with “City Center” – TAU’s Research center for Cities and Urbanism.

Program is open for graduate students and students at the last year of their undergraduate degree.
