Newsletter October 26, 2007 Page 1 Slovenian Ambassador will run the Marine Corps Marathon Slovenian Ambassador to US Samuel Žbogar will run the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, October 28th in Washington DC to raise funds for six young landmine survivors from Bosnia- Herzegovina. Ambassador running the Cleveland Marathon in May, 2007. All six children from Bosnia and Herzegovina have finished their rehabilitation in Slovenia and four of them will be visiting Washington from October 29th till November 1st. They will participate at several landmine awareness events, including a special ‘Thank you’ Reception for all our donors on October 29, at 5.30 pm, at the new premises of the Slovenian Embassy at 2410 California St. You may find the list of all the donors at www.ambassadorruns.org. Ambassador Žbogar ran several marathons this year (Austin, TX, Knoxville, TN on April 1; Cleveland, OH on May), to raise funds to support International Trust Fund for the rehabilitation of 6 landmine survivors victimized by the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thanks to so many great friends Ambassador Žbogar raised more than $65.000, by far exceeding our first target goal. Other stakeholders in fund-raising project are the Marshall Legacy Institute and the International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance. More information on: http://www.ambassadorruns.org/ Ambassador Žbogar will also be cheered at the marathon by 4 land-mines survivors from BIH: Fadila Alihodžić, Jasmin Brkić, Damir Grbić and Elvis Šerifović will be cheering along the streets of Washington to the Slovenian Ambassador who will compete at the Marine Corps Marathon this Sunday morning. Fadila, Jasmin, Damir and Elvis are planned to be at the Lincoln Memorial. Those of you who would be interested to be part of the Slovenian cheering team for the Slovenian Ambassador, you are more than welcome to join us. The Embassy team will be standing at the Key Bridge at the start of the marathon, at approximately 8 a.m., and will move then to the Tidal Basin area. We'll be wearing Slovenian t- shirts and Slovenian flags. This year’s European Union Film Showcase will be the 20th edition of the festival, and AFI Silver is proud to present perhaps our best EU Showcase lineup ever.

Is will be a showcase of over 30 films from 26 different countries, amongst them more than 10 Official Oscar Selections. Many high-profile, award-winning films that American moviegoers are eagerly awaiting their opportunity to see. And the first place people in Washington, DC will see these films is at the EU Showcase.

Slovenia will be represented by the film Gravehopping, on schedule for Saturday, Nov. 17, 2:30; Tuesday, Nov. 20, 6:45.

The festival will take place at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, from November 1 to 20, 2007.

* * *2007 Small Nations Poetry Reading

Ambassadors of 10 world nations will gather in the National Museum of Women in the Arts on November 6, 2007, to present their nation’s poetry. The event is an annual celebration of the cross cultural exchange of beauty and the power of poetry. The proceeds from the ticket sales will be dedicated to NMWA’s “BRIDGING COMMUNITIES” PROGRAM, promoting cross-cultural exchange among elementary school children in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Slovenian women's choir Carmina Slovenica is currently on American tour, starting on October 26, where it will present its new project Attacca. The choir, under the supervision of conductor Karmina Šilec, will have several concert within California.

Irvine, California, September 29 - A group of enthusiastic members of Slovenian Community in California, organized by Slovene National Benefit Society, took part in the annual Irvine Global Villlage Festival this September.

The festival is dedicated to raising cultural awareness and highlighting the extraordinary diversity of the communities in and around the city of Irvine. Slovenia was presented with a booth,

showing the highlights of natural beauties as well as cultural specifics.

*Presidential Election – The second round of presidential election will be held on November 11, 2007. Those of you, who have a permanent residency in Slovenia, but currently reside in the US, and have not yet register for voting, can do so by sending a request to the Slovenia’s National Voting Committee. You can find the appropriate form at www.dvk.gov.si.

*Legislative Referendum – The Republic of Slovenia issued writs for the Referendum on Legislation for Changes and Amendments to the Law on Proprietary Reformations of Insurance Companies. The Referendum will be organized simultaneously with the second round of the presidential elections, on November 11, 2007. For more information, and for registering to vote on the Referendum, please refer to the web site of Slovenia’s National Voting Committee, http://www.dvk.gov.si/.

* November 5 - 7 - Ambassador Samuel Žbogar will visit Pueblo and Denver, Colorado at the beginning of November. During the visit, facilitated by Honorary Consul Mr. Raymond P. Kogovšek, Ambassador will meet with the Slovenian Community, speak at the University of Denver and meet with Colorado Governor and leaders of the Congress.

* Open Call – Office for Slovenes Abroad has published an open call for proposals in the Official Gazette from October 19, 2007, with a goal of financially facilitating activities of Slovenian communities abroad. Princesses will perform in festival activities from Friday April 18 through Sunday morning April 20.
