SituationSherwood has not been sold on the open market since the 1930s and is one of the oldest properties in the popular Heronsgate Conservation Area, a thriving, friendly, family oriented community with regular social events and its own church and village hall. There are many excellent junior and senior schools in the area, both state and private. There is also access to picturesque countryside walks, a nine-hole golf course and active cricket club on the 200 acre Chorleywood Common and equestrian pursuits, tennis, fishing, and golf at Moor Park Golf Club and The Grove Country Hotel, Golf & Spa Resort.

The nearby village of Chorleywood (1.6 miles) offers a range of pubs and restaurants, independent shops and good transport connections via the Metropolitan and Chiltern lines to Central London. The local town of Rickmansworth (3 miles) also has a comprehensive shopping centre with the food halls of Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Tesco. The M25 can also be accessed easily from Heronsgate, with links to the motorway network and nearby major airports.

HistoryHeronsgate was a Chartist settlement created by Feargus O’Connor, an Irish MP, and the Chartist Cooperative Land Company in 1847. The idea was to free the working-man and his family from factory and mine work into a healthier self-sufficient life in the countryside. O’Connor supervised the laying out of the plots and the construction of the roads and houses. The original roads and many houses survive today and the core of Sherwood is a farmhouse that formed one of the original houses in Heronsgate. Sherwood has been identified as a Locally Important Building because of its historic interest.

DescriptionSherwood sits in a tucked away location at the end of a long private drive off Long Lane with ample parking in the courtyard and in front of the house. It also enjoys separate access through the centre of Heronsgate along Halifax Road. The versatile accommodation over two floors offers great living space in a beautiful setting and the opportunity to improve a fabulous family home.

The original farmhouse dates back to the 1840s and was extended in the late Victorian/Edwardian period to create a substantial family home. Sherwood retains many interesting features including stone and cast iron fireplaces, farmhouse cellar and pantry with slate shelves, Edwardian dado rails and mouldings, finials, escutcheons and finger plates, oak flooring, quarry tiles, stained glass door and windows and an original roof top village bell.

The ground floor accommodation is flexible and well laid out, with high ceilings and deep skirting boards. The reception hall opens into a grand double aspect library/music room with stained glass embellished windows overlooking the garden. The large double aspect drawing room has a marble fireplace, beautiful windows and fine views of mature rhododendrons. There is a sunny morning room with an original working fireplace, a bright breakfast room with Welsh dresser and a solid maple wood Smallbone kitchen overlooking a walled garden parterre. A conservatory, quarry tiled garden/utility room, WC, wet room with WC, pantry and boot room complete the ground floor accommodation. Stairs adjacent to the pantry lead down to a large cellar under the kitchen which houses a wine cupboard with original Edwardian wine bins.

The impressive front staircase rises to a half landing and then on to the double aspect master bedroom with fine windows overlooking the garden, en suite bathroom and dressing room, a large second double aspect bedroom and a generous landing with ample space for a desk. The half landing also gives access to a further three double bedrooms, all with original fireplaces, and one single bedroom currently used as a study. There is a walk in linen/airing cupboard, a family bathroom and separate WC. The back staircase rises from the back door and kitchen giving access to both the first floor and a separate annexe which has a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom.

Gardens and GroundsThe gardens are a special feature of Sherwood and were described by Richard Bisgrove in “The Gardens of Britain” published in association with the Royal Horticultural Society, as a ‘model of good Victorian planning, simple in outline yet varied in content”. There are stunning specimen rhododendrons, a fruit orchard which includes an old mulberry tree, and a raised walk along a substantial shrub border backed by a splendid yew hedge. A separate landscaped garden created in 1973 surrounds the swimming pool which has a generous terraced area, separate changing rooms and a pump house. There are several specimen trees in the garden including a magnificent cedar and mature wellingtonia and large expanses of lawn and long grass planted with bulbs.
