On behalf of the SFJAZZ Board of Trustees, welcome to Season 2 at the SFJAZZ Center!

Our new home opened less than a year ago with our historic Opening Night concert, hosted by Bill Cosby and featuring an extraordinary collection of jazz greats, including McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Joshua Redman and Bobby Hutcherson. Since then, audiences have been treated to many magical evenings. The response has been overwhelming, with over 50 individual performances selling out in Season 1. DownBeat captured my feelings well:

“This is an institution that understands where it comes from, and it will be a pleasure to see where it goes.”

Where it goes for Season 2 is to set the bar even higher, bringing an exciting lineup of jazz greats to the SFJAZZ Center, both established and emerging. Our education offerings are blossoming since the move to our own home, with our SFJAZZ High School All-Stars winning DownBeat ’s Student Music Awards, the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival Award for Best Conglomerate Big Band Performance, and Best Big Band and Best Combo at the 5th Annual Charles Mingus High School Festival.

The Bay Area has always been a unique cauldron of creativity, rooted in innovation and embracing progressive, audacious ideas. It is also an area that has a historically deep support and love for the arts. The SFJAZZ Center, the only stand-alone jazz venue in the United States, is the result of our forward-thinking city embracing its storied jazz tradition. The key to our success is the strong support of our Members, who have more than doubled to over 8,000 since our new Center launched in January 2013. If you’re not a Member, join now (visit sfjazz.org/join for more information); if you’re already a Member, move up to the Leaders Circle.

We hope you have a great experience tonight, and that you’ll return soon. Music history has already been made on our stages, and in brows-ing this program book, I think you’ll see more history in the making.

Sincerely,

Bannus Hudson

Meet Our Resident Artistic Directors

During Season 2, five of the most innovative and influential musicians in jazz each curate weeks of exclusive program-ming in the Miner Auditorium. These residencies will premiere new work, feature unprecedented collaborations and allow the artists an opportunity for unfettered creativity and experimentation. Our Resident Artistic Directors exemplify the boundary-breaking creative mission of the SFJAZZ Center.

Dear Friends,

It’s been an amazing and deeply gratifying year for SFJAZZ, whose 30-year dream to build a home for jazz in San Francisco came to fruition with the opening of our beautiful new center last January. Its success has more than exceeded our hopes and expectations, earning rave reviews from fans, musicians and the media. But the common thread that we’ve heard from everyone is how good it feels to be at the Center.

The only way to top this success was to strive to make our second season even better. In keeping with our vision to present a broad range of artists for four-night runs and residencies, we’ve invited some of the world’s greatest artists - stars like Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Rosanne Cash, Eddie Palmieri, Buika, Branford Marsalis, Laurie Anderson, and many others.

We are delighted to welcome back the creative voices of our Resident Artistic Directors, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Regina Carter, John Santos and Miguel Zenón, as well as celebrate the 10th Anniversary of our acclaimed SFJAZZ Collective, whose brand new album salutes Chick Corea and was the first ever recorded at the SFJAZZ Center. Add to that shows by the renowned New Orleans pianist Allen Toussaint, Cuba’s stellar Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, pianist Geri Allen in a killer trio with bassist Esperanza Spalding and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and a Fats Waller Birthday tribute produced by the inimitable Dan Hicks.

We hope you’ll join us often to hear the full spectrum of great artists who will appear with us and invite you to discover the music that moves you.

See you at the Center!

Sincerely,

Randall Kline SFJAZZ Founder and Executive Artistic Director

The SFJAZZ Center

The luminous new SFJAZZ Center is the first stand-alone structure in the country built specifically for jazz. Its intimate concert hall, the Robert N. Miner Auditorium, delivers the acoustic quality of a great concert hall and the relaxed intimacy of a jazz club.

Located in bustling Hayes Valley, the 35,000-square- foot LEED-Certified building was designed by the award-winning San Francisco architect Mark Cavagnero in conjunction with acoustician Sam Berkow and theater designer Len Auerbach.

THE WORLD IS LISTENING

More than a trumpet superstar, Terence Blanchard is jazz’s foremost Renaissance man. A savvy bandleader, prescient talent scout, celebrated film composer, brilliant jazz writer, and influential educator, the New Orleans native is a creative force who sits at the apex of the contemporary jazz scene. For his SFJAZZ residency he’s performing with a sextet distilled from his acclaimed new Blue Note album Magnetic, a riveting session featuring the superb tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, tenor sax great Brice Winston, Beninese guitar sensation Lionel Loueke, Cuban piano master Fabian Almazan, the frighteningly accomplished young bassist Joshua Crumbly, and drummer Kendrick Scott, a rising force who made a memorable SFJAZZ debut as a bandleader with his group The Oracle. The Los Angeles Times described Magnetic as “overflowing with inspiration,” a feeling that is sure to sweep over audiences during this four-night engagement in Miner Auditorium.

RESIDENT ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

BILL FRISELLBehind guitarist Bill Frisell’s affable demeanor there’s a steely willed artist whose creative ambitions span the continent. Since his early days on the Downtown Manhattan scene in the mid-1970s, when he became a key collaborator with John Zorn, Frisell has steadily expanded his sonic purview, staking a claim to an ever-greater range of media, material, and musical traditions. From Charles Ives and Aaron Copland to Buster Keaton and Bob Dylan, from urban thrash and American Songbook ballads to country blues and Nashville twang, Frisell distills the essence of the American experience.

Duets & Trios

Bill Frisell w/ Geri Allen & Greg Osby

Thu, 9/12 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

Guitarist Bill Frisell’s week as Resident Artistic Director celebrates the spirit of collaboration, and starts with an evening of duos and trios featuring pianist Geri Allen and saxophonist Greg Osby.

Easily one of the most accomplished pianists in jazz today, Geri Allen has released 18 albums as a leader and collaborated with a pantheon of living masters including Ornette Coleman, Charles Lloyd, Wayne Shorter and Charlie Haden. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for Composition, and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan.

St. Louis native Greg Osby has been a groundbreaking force in jazz since the 1980s, combining his fiery post-bop sensibility with elements of funk, hip hop and the avant garde over the course of nearly 20 albums as a leader. He was a member of drumming legend Jack DeJohnette’s influential Special Edition band, and made significant contributions to the work of Steve Coleman and the late career of piano genius Andrew Hill. This night of instrumental mastery will happen only at SFJAZZ.

Saxophonist Greg Osby, violinist and vocalist Petra Haden, bassist Thomas Morgan, violist Eyvind Kang and drummer Rudy Royston join the guitarist for an unforgettable evening of solos, duos, trios and full ensemble performances. Duets & Trios

Bill Frisell w/ Petra Haden, Thomas Morgan & Greg Osby

Fri, 9/13 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

The second night of Bill Frisell Resident Artistic Director week features a lineup of musicians whose work confounds stylistic boundaries. Violinist and singer Petra Haden first came to prominence as part of the influential indie pop band That Dog and worked with alternative music icon Beck. She’s a studio mainstay on the rock scene and has issued seven CDs. The daughter of legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden, she collaborated with Frisell on the exquisite 2003 duo album, Petra Haden and Bill Frisell.

Hayward-born bassist Thomas Morgan has performed alongside a number of the most trendsetting artists in jazz, including saxophonist Steve Coleman, keyboardist Craig Taborn and iconic drummer Paul Motian. It was on Motian’s final album, 2011’s The Windmills of Your Mind, that Frisell, Haden and Morgan first collaborated. You can expect this joyous reunion to touch on the legacy of Motian, with whom Frisell worked as part of the drummer’s vaunted trio for the majority of his career. Joining them will be saxophonist Greg Osby, who has been a groundbreaking force in jazz since the 1980s.

Live Jazz + Live Art

Bill Frisell’s Beautiful Dreamers featuring Jim Woodring, cartoonist

Sat, 9/14 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

Bill Frisell’s third night as Resident Artistic Director is a delightful live multi-media collaboration between Frisell’s Beautiful Dreamers trio and influential cartoonist and animator Jim Woodring. For this special performance, Woodring will create live digital illustrations, projected on the Miner Auditorium video screen, to accompany and inspire the music. Composed of Frisell on guitar and electronics with violist Eyvind Kang and drummer Rudy Royston, Beautiful Dreamers is an incredibly dynamic trio, deeply rooted in the blues and possessed of an unshakable groove.

Eyvind Kang is a multi-faceted composer and performer who has collaborated with Frisell for nearly two decades. Rudy Royston is an in-demand musician, recording and performing with ensembles led by Javon Jackson, Ravi Coltrane and the Mingus Big Band.

Jim Woodring is best known for his character Frank, who has appeared in a number of graphic novels and in his previous multi-media collaboration with Frisell, 2006’s Probability Cloud. The Comics Journal named two of Woodring’s creations to their list of 100 Best Comics of the Century.

SOUTHERN EXPOSURE Amjad Ali Khan, Kellye Gray, Allen Toussaint, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club

This week, we celebrate the global concept of “south” with four incredibly diverse concerts that range from the traditional music of Cuba and India to a Texas-born jazz singer and a New Orleans songwriting legend.

Indian Sarod Virtuoso

Amjad Ali Khan & Sons

Thu, 9/19 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

One of India’s greatest musicians, Amjad Ali Khan is the unrivaled master of the 19-string fretless North Indian lute called the sarod. Born to Indian music legend Haafiz Ali Khan and heir to illustrious musical lineage that invented the instrument itself, Khan gave his first recital at age 6 and was a national celebrity by his teens. New Orleans Legend

Allen Toussaint

Sat, 9/21 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

One of the most iconic and influential figures in New Orleans music, Allen Toussaint is an artist synonymous with the gritty, funky R&B of the Crescent City. As a performer, songwriter, producer and arranger, Toussaint has played an integral part in many of the greatest hits to emerge from New Orleans since the 1950s, and his indelible contributions to popular music earned him a much-deserved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He produced and composed for New Orleans mainstays Dr. John, The Meters and Irma Thomas, and his compositions have been recorded and performed by a veritable who’s-who of pop artists, such as the Pointer Sisters, Ringo Starr, The Rolling Stones and Otis Redding. From writing immortal tunes like “Working in a Coal Mine,” “Fortune Teller” and “Get Out of My Life Woman” to producing albums for Patti LaBelle and Paul McCartney, Toussaint’s influence is as strong as ever. His most recent Nonesuch studio album, The Bright Mississippi, pays tribute to the jazz legends who inspired him, from Louis Armstrong to Thelonious Monk, and features a backing band including Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Nicholas Payton and Marc Ribot. For his SFJAZZ appearance, Toussaint performs music spanning the breadth of his incredible career in a rare evening of solo piano and voice, bringing the audience up close and personal with a true music legend.

RESIDENT ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

REGINA CARTER For Regina Carter, the violin isn’t merely an improvisational vehicle. It’s a passport, unlocking the door to myriad cultures and worlds. Since emerging from the Detroit scene in the late 1980s, Carter has recorded a series of dazzling albums, joining forces with piano giant Kenny Barron on Freefall, celebrating her hometown on Motor City Moments, and breaking new ground with a legendary violin on Paganini: After A Dream. Winner of a coveted 2006 MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship, she began researching the African roots of the violin, resulting in her acclaimed 2010 recording Reverse Thread, an entrancing sojourn exploring compositions by artists from Kenya, Mali, and Senegal.

Violin Summit

Regina Carter w/ Jenny Scheinman & Sara Caswell

Thu, 9/26 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

Violinist and Resident Artistic Director Regina Carter’s week of programming presents a dizzying array of artistry, beginning with a stunning violin summit featuring Carter, Jenny Scheinman and Sara Caswell.

Humboldt County native Jenny Scheinman has charted an exploratory course over her musical career. A long-time collaborator with guitarist and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Bill Frisell, Scheinman has worked with a staggering array of musicians including Norah Jones and Aretha Franklin, and released seven acclaimed albums as leader. Her 2005 release, 12 Songs, made The New York Times’ Top 10 Albums list.

Sara Caswell is a sublime classical and jazz violinist who made her orchestral debut at age 15. She has been a soloist with the New York Pops Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and performed worldwide with Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society project. She leads the Sara Caswell Quartet and the Caswell Sisters Quintet, and is a member of the boundary-breaking group, Rose & The Nightingale. Join us for this unforgettable evening of violin magic!

Violin, Vocals and Big Band

Regina Carter w/ Carla Cook and the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Orchestra

Sun, 9/29 • 7pm

Miner Auditorium

The final night of Regina Carter’s residency ends the week on a high note with her superb band, augmented by sublime vocalist Carla Cook and our own SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Orchestra. In a performance that looks to Carter’s 2006 standards project dedicated to her late mother, I’ll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey, Carter’s ironclad quartet is backed by our DownBeat award-winning ensemble of High School virtuosos and acclaimed singer Cook, who was featured on the album along with vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater.

A friend of Regina Carter since their high school years together in Detroit, Carla Cook is a Grammy-nominated artist whose repertoire stretches from Tin Pan Alley to Neil Young. She paid her early career dues with vibraphonist and jazz legend Lionel Hampton as well as pianist Cyrus Chestnut, and has since risen to become one of the most in-demand vocalists in jazz, leading her own quartet and recording three acclaimed albums as a leader.

Tango Meets Jazz

Regina Carter w/ Pablo Ziegler Quartet

Fri, 9/27 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

Violinist and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Regina Carter joins the quartet of Argentine piano virtuoso Pablo Ziegler for an evening dedicated to the music of Ziegler’s former employer, tango giant Astor Piazzolla. A towering figure in Argentine music, Ziegler is the most visible and important living proponent of Nuevo Tango, the integration of jazz and classical influences into the classic tango style. Ziegler is a masterful pianist, who performed in the quartet of legendary Nuevo Tango innovator Piazzolla for over a decade, until the maestro’s retirement in 1989. Ziegler played a crucial role on several of Piazzolla’s greatest recordings, including La Camorra, The New Tango and the incomparable Tango: Zero Hour, considered by Piazzolla to be his finest work. In 1990, Ziegler formed his Quintet for New Tango, which has carried on and expanded the legacy of his mentor, and he won a Latin Grammy for the 2005 album Bajo Cero, his collaboration with Argentine guitarist Quique Sinesi. For this special evening, Carter will add her sublime violin voice to Ziegler’s quartet, reprising their sparkling collaboration from 2011 at New York’s Jazz Standard.

Regina Carter’s third night of residency pairs the violin star with jazz piano giant Kenny Barron in an intimate duet setting, first heard on their remarkable 2001 Verve collaboration, Freefall. Barron is a 2010 NEA Jazz Master who has helped define and extend the jazz tradition since his work with Dizzy Gillespie in the early ‘60s catapulted him into the spotlight. A nine-time Grammy nominee, his storied career has included extended associations with Stan Getz, Yusef Lateef and Freddie Hubbard in addition to his sparkling work as a leader, which has yielded nearly 50 albums in settings from solo piano to big band. Off the bandstand, Barron has enjoyed a hugely influential tenure as a music professor at Rutgers University and The Juilliard School of Music. This meeting of two instrumental masters will provide an evening of unexpected delights.

Electric Band

Dave Holland’s Prism

Sun, 10/6 • 7pm

Miner Auditorium

Far more than one of jazz’s greatest bassists, Dave Holland has inhabited the music’s adventurous edge ever since Miles Davis hired him to anchor his band in 1968 as it rapidly morphed from an acoustic powerhouse to a pioneering fusion combo. Holland returns to the SFJAZZ Center with his aptly named Prism project featuring the ingenious keyboardist Craig Taborn, former SFJAZZ Collective drummer Eric Harland and Kevin Eubanks, a brilliant guitarist who has resurfaced after a 15-year run leading the Tonight Show Band. Combining the celebrated virtuosity of Taborn on electric and acoustic pianos and the soulful scorch of Eubanks in the front line with Harland’s matchless finesse and expressiveness, this decidedly plugged-in quartet is an explosive outlet for Holland at his unbridled best.

Our resident supergroup commemorates their 10th Anniversary with a four-night celebration, highlighting their greatest arrangements and original compositions. An all-star jazz ensemble comprising eight of the finest performer/composers at work in jazz today, the Collective’s mission each year is to perform fresh arrangements of works by a modern jazz master and newly commissioned pieces by the Collective members. Through this pioneering approach, simultaneously honoring jazz’s recent history while championing the music’s up-to-the-minute creation, the Collective embodies SFJAZZ’s commitment to jazz as a living, ever-relevant art form. This “best of” week includes material from each of the group’s tribute composers, including Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Stevie Wonder and Chick Corea. The opening night performance will highlight the music of Thelonious Monk on what would have been the jazz icon’s 96th birthday, and will mark the performance debut by a new Collective member, vibraphonist Warren Wolf.

Motorcycle Diaries

Jorge Drexler

Wed, 10/16 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

A musical visionary from Uruguay, Jorge Drexler is one of Latin America’s most celebrated singer/songwriters. He made an indelible impression on countless viewers by delivering an impromptu a cappella rendition of his theme for The Motorcycle Diaries, “Al Otro Lado Del Rio,” while collecting his Oscar for Best Original Song. With his soft, lulling voice, expert guitar work, and quietly compelling stage presence, he laces traditional Uruguayan forms such as candombe, milonga and tango with insinuating traces of bossa nova, jazz and electronica. Now based in Spain, he grew up in Montevideo with a strong Jewish identity, and spent his early career dividing his time between music and a medical practice. These days, he does his healing wielding a guitar.

A Different Time

John Medeski, solo

Thu, 10/17 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

Jazz fans put John Medeski in a box at their own risk. The keyboardist is best known for his groove-inflected work with jamband juggernaut Medeski Martin & Wood, but he first made his mark as a budding improviser through gigs with Dewey Redman, Billy Higgins and the celebrated Boston big band Either/Orchestra. A stylistic omnivore, Medeski is as comfortable exploring the outer reaches with John Zorn and David Fiuczynski as he is producing an album by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. He’s delved into the sacred side of the funk equation as a member of gospel-drenched quartet The Word and brought his trademark sound to Spectrum Road, the all-star band that celebrates the electric music of drumming legend Tony Williams. For this solo performance in Miner Auditorium, Medeski will draw from a number of sources—originals, spontaneous improvisations and standards—a parallel to the material on his new solo piano release, A Different Time, promising a night of delightful surprises.

Robert Glasper Experiment

Fri, 10/18 • 7pm & 9:30pm

Miner Auditorium

Pianist and composer Robert Glasper is on a mission to reconcile modern jazz with hip-hop and R&B. His last Blue Note recording, Black Radio, was a wildly successful step in that direction, winning Glasper and his Experiment band a Grammy for Best R&B Album. He has been a go-to keyboardist for some of the era’s defining hip hop and R&B stars, including Mos Def, Kanye West, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z and Maxwell, and simultaneously established himself as an insightful post-bop pianist through stints with jazz masters Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove and Terence Blanchard. He’s released a series of accomplished acoustic sessions, focusing his energy now on the plugged-in funk of his Experiment—a telepathic ensemble featuring saxophonist and vocalist Casey Benjamin, bassist Derrick Hodge and drummer Mark Colenburg. Touring to support his new and highly anticipated follow-up to Black Radio, Robert Glasper is truly the sound of now.

In recent years a tidal surge of extraordinary Caribbean musicians has transformed the American jazz scene. And near the beginning of that wave, from the Dominican Republic, was pianist Michel Camilo. A virtuoso whose lightning two-handed runs and bravura rhythmic attack leave audiences shaking their heads in amazement, Camilo came to prominence shortly after settling in New York City in 1979. He has been widely recognized for his astounding technique, with a doctorate from Berklee, a Latin Grammy Award for the 2000 Verve album Spain and a 2004 Grammy in the Best Latin Jazz Album category for Live at the Blue Note. Camilo’s high-profile collaborators over the years include Dizzy Gillespie, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Gary Burton, Tomatito, Anthony Jackson, Dave Weckl and dozens more. For this incendiary evening of solo piano, Camilo will draw from his new OKeh Records release, What’s Up?, a stunning showcase for his solo mastery. Join us for an action-packed evening with one of the most fiery of all keyboardists.

ACS TRIO

GERI ALLEN, TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON & ESPERANZA SPALDINGThu, 10/24 • 7pm & 9:30pm

Miner Auditorium

With the multi-generational supergroup ACS, sisterhood isn’t just powerful, it’s downright explosive. A spectacular fusion of three celebrated bandleaders who each bring daunting technique and a questing spirit of improvisation to the collective ensemble, ACS emerged out of Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy Award-winning 2011 Concord Jazz album The Mosaic Project. A pianist of bracing intelligence and unerring improvisational instincts, Geri Allen is the band’s veteran seeker. Carrington was already an elite accompanist when she released her 1989 debut Real Life Story with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, Greg Osby, and Dianne Reeves. And Esperanza Spalding was already jazz’s brightest young star before winning an unprecedented Best New Artist Grammy Award in 2011. Elegant, experimental, and unquestionably bold, ACS provides this brilliant triumvirate with a vivid forum for further explorations.

TRIBUTE TO DJANGO REINHARDT

Sat, 10/26 • 7:30pm

Sun, 10/27 • 4pm

Miner Auditorium

Pioneering Gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt lamented that he might be neglected by history, but today the ebulliently swinging “jazz manouche” sound he created with French violinist Stéphane Grappelli is more pervasive than ever. And no one has done more to ignite interest in the idiom than dazzling French guitarist and violinist Dorado Schmitt. Born to Gypsy parents near the German border in Lorraine, Schmitt was weaned on traditional Roma music and Gypsy jazz, but rebelled as a teenager by taking up electric guitar and emulating Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. By the mid-90s he was a leading figure on the international Gypsy jazz scene, where he continues to represent the art form at its highest level. Schmitt’s all-star ensemble is joined for this engagement by American guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson, a veteran of work with Elton John, Bonnie Raitt and the Desert Rose Band, who is a superlative interpreter of Django Reinhardt’s music and was the first American to headline the annual Reinhardt festival in France. In fact, Jorgenson portrayed Reinhardt on-screen in the 2004 feature film Head in the Clouds, starring Charlize Theron and Penélope Cruz. Sun, 11/3 • 7pm

Maceo Parker spent the first half of his career in the service of funk’s founding fathers. In his second act as a bandleader, the unrelentingly soulful saxophonist/vocalist has ascended into the funk firmament in his own right, leading a righetously grooving outfit that plays with ecstatic precision and ferocious drive. The altoist made his mark as an essential voice in the powerhouse horns backing James Brown, contributing classic funk solos on some of the Godfather’s iconic hits. He went on to join George Clinton’s moveable funk feast in Parliament/Funkadelic during the ensemble’s most creative era. Since the early 1990s, Parker has been spreading the gospel of groove as a dedicated entertainer who believes in funk’s power to transform and heal. He brings his super-powered band to Miner Auditorium for an

Masters of Persian Music

Kayhan Kalhor & Ali Bahrami Fard

Thu, 11/14 • 7:30pm

A virtuoso of the Persian spiked fiddle called the kamancheh, Kayhan Kalhor is a three-time Grammy nominee widely considered to be the greatest living ambassador of Iranian music. Born into an Iranian Kurdish family, he’s performed internationally as a founding member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and given solo recitals at Carnegie Hall. Living back in Tehran after years in the West, Kalhor returns bearing the shah kaman, a new, custom-built kamancheh constructed with sympathetic strings, joining forces with Ali Bahrami Fard, a master of the rarely heard bass santour (a hammered dulcimer with 96 strings). They perform the deeply stirring music from 2012’s World Village release I Will Not Stand Alone, a stark and haunting meditation that finds glimmers of hope in dark times.

RESIDENT ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

JASON MORAN An ambitiously creative musician who frequently collaborates with artists in film and dance, pianist Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. Winner of numerous awards and honors, including a coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010, the 37-year-old pianist has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs. As a Resident Artistic Director, the multi-faceted Moran is performing in a wide-ranging array of settings.

Baida Quartet

Thu, 11/21 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

The opening night of Jason Moran’s week as Resident Artistic Director focuses on the sublime quartet assembled on San Francisco-born trumpeter Ralph Alessi’s new ECM Records release, Baida. An incredibly dynamic ensemble described by The New York Times as “unstoppably inventive,” the band was first heard as a unit on Alessi’s 2002 CD This Against That, an album that made JazzTimes magazine’s Top 10 for the year. Alessi is a celebrated performer, composer and bandleader on the New York jazz scene, leading 10 albums and performing extensively with bass giant Charlie Haden and saxophonist Steve Coleman.

Bassist Drew Gress is one of New York’s most accomplished improvisors, leading a number of bands and lending his talents to boundary-breaking artists including Uri Caine, Don Byron and Ravi Coltrane.

Drummer Nasheet Waits is the son of jazz drumming luminary Freddie Waits and a longstanding member of Jason Moran’s quartet, The Bandwagon. He has had long-term associations with Max Roach’s percussion ensemble M’BOOM, pianist Andrew Hill and saxophonist Antonio Hart.

Tribute to Randy Weston

Jason Moran w/ Randy Weston & Billy Harper

Sun, 11/24 • 7pm

Miner Auditorium

The final night of Jason Moran’s residency is a one-time-only concert of solos, duos and trios featuring a pair of jazz giants who made indelible marks on the art form, pianist Randy Weston and saxophonist Billy Harper.

A 2001 NEA Jazz Master, Randy Weston’s impact has been enormous, as a pianist, composer and innovator. Living in Morocco brought a powerful African influence to his work, which includes the pioneering Africa-meets-jazz recording Afrika Uhuru with texts by poet Langston Hughes, and the spiritually charged sessions African Cookbook, Blue Moses and Tanjah. Weston is a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow.

Fiery saxophonist Billy Harper has built upon the legacy of the great John Coltrane, infusing his monstrous chops with a deeply lyrical sensibility. A veteran of drumming legend Art Blakey’s immortal Jazz Messengers, Harper released a procession of seminal albums, including Capra Black and Black Saint. Harper has a long history of collaboration with Weston, and they reunite on the Miner Auditorium stage with Moran for this unforgettable event.

Jason Moran w/ Cassandra Wilson

Fri, 11/22 • 7:30pm

Members-only

Miner Auditorium

Celebrated vocalist Cassandra Wilson joins Jason Moran for his second night of residency in an intimate duo performance, recapturing the magic of their collaboration on Wilson’s Grammy-winning 2008 standards project, Loverly. Wilson was a founding member of Brooklyn’s ground-breaking M-Base Collective along with saxophonist Steve Coleman and pianist Geri Allen, breaking through to a massive mainstream audience with her blockbuster 1993 Blue Note debut, Blue Light ‘Til Dawn. A singer possessed of a deep, velvety and haunt-ing contralto, Wilson has honed a remarkably flexible approach, at home belting out jazz chest-nuts, caressing banjo-tinged country spirituals and inhabit-ing the deepest Delta blues. She claimed DownBeat magazine’s Jazz Vocalist of the Year honors for three consecutive years, won a Grammy for her 1996 Blue Note release, New Moon Daughter, and was named “America’s Best Singer” by Time magazine. On this special evening for SFJAZZ Members only, Wilson and Mo-ran explore the most soul-baring setting for a vocalist and pianist, promising a performance of rare beauty.

Comedy & Jazz

Jason Moran w/ Faizon Love, Marina Franklin, Keith Robinson & The Bandwagon

Sat, 11/23 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

In the spirit of last season’s collaboration with San Francisco’s skateboarding community, pianist and Resident Artistic Director Jason Moran presents another inventive setting for his music that breaks down barriers between jazz and other artistic disciplines. For this uproarious night, Moran’s Bandwagon band is joined by three of the brightest lights in standup comedy, Faizon Love, Marina Franklin and Keith Robinson. Actor and comic Faizon Love has headlined comedy clubs across the country, starring in director Robert Townsend’s sitcom The Parent ‘Hood and rapper Ice Cube’s blockbuster comedy, Friday. Marina Franklin is a talented young comic who has appeared on The Jay Leno Show and is currently starring in Herlarious for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network. Named one of Time Out New York ’s “21 New York Comedy Scene Linchpins,” Keith Robinson was a regular on Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and starred in his own Comedy Central stand-up special.

NOTE: Due to language and adult content, this show is suitable for mature audiences only.

LATIN JAZZ LEGEND

EDDIE PALMIERI Nine-time Grammy winning Latin Jazz pianist and 2013 NEA Jazz Master Eddie Palmieri makes his SFJAZZ Center debut with both large and small ensembles, joined by a pair of very special guests. New Orleans saxophone star and Mardi Gras Indian Chief Donald Harrison shares the stage with Palmieri’s Septet to kick off the week, followed by a pair of nights featuring his Salsa Big Band. The week closes with pioneering Cuban violinist Alfredo de la Fé.

Iconic Salsa Violinist

Eddie Palmieri Septet w/ Alfredo de la Fé

Sun, 12/1 • 7pm

Miner Auditorium

Eddie Palmieri was already a Latin music legend when 18-year-old Cuban violin prodigy Alfredo de la Fé joined his orchestra in 1972. While de la Fé soon left for San Francisco and a brief run with Santana, he’s been associated with Palmieri ever since, appearing on several classic recordings and rejoining the Maestro for special concerts. A conservatory-trained player who made his Carnegie Hall debut at 11, de la Fé single-handedly carved out a space for violin in salsa through his collaborations with elite Latin artists such as Tipica ‘73, Celia Cruz, the Fania All-Stars, and Tito Puente.

Also joining the festivities is acclaimed vibraphonist Joe Locke, known for his work with Kenny Barron, Ron Carter and his co-led ensemble with pianist Geoffrey Keezer. Locke’s seamless blend with Palmieri’s ensemble recalls Palmieri’s landmark collaboration with Bay Area Latin jazz vibraphone icon Cal Tjader.

New Orleans Saxophone Giant Eddie Palmieri Septet w/ Donald Harrison

Fri, 11/29 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

There’s nothing in jazz quite like the sight of Eddie Palmieri hunched over the piano, hammering out percussive block chords and propelling his band deeper into an already stage-levitating mon-tuno groove. As a leading force in Afro-Caribbean music for more than half a century, the NEA Jazz Master and nine-time Grammy Award winner was the last great bandleader to emerge from the Palladium Ballroom’s golden era. He helped spark the birth of salsa at Fania Records in the 1970s, and galvanized Latin jazz with his fearsome septet in the late 1980s featuring New Orleans alto sax great Donald Harrison, who rejoins El Rumbero Del Piano for this exclusive performance along with baritone saxophone master Ronnie Cuber.

The New Orleans-born Harrison came up through the jazz acad-emy that was drum legend Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and has become one of the most formidable saxophonists in jazz. He’s recorded nearly two dozen albums and appeared as himself on several episodes of the smash HBO series Treme.

Cuber is a founding member of the Mingus Big Band who has performed with artists rang-ing from Horace Silver to Frank Zappa.

Sat, 11/30 • 7pm

Sat, 11/30 • 9:30pm

Miner Auditorium

A beloved patriarch of Latin music known for transforming dance orchestras into roiling sonic laboratories, Nuyorican pianist/composer Eddie Palmieri has been at the cutting edge of Afro-Caribbean music since the early 1960s. After his two-year gig with the great Tito Rodríguez culminated in the classic 1960 album Live at the Palladium, Palmieri set out to revolutionize the dance orchestra with his legendary trombone-powered ensemble La Perfecta. From 1965’s foundational salsa anthem “Azúcar” to the politically and rhythmically charged 1971 album Vámonos Pa’l Monte to 1975’s iconoclastic The Sun Of Latin Music, Palmieri has fearlessly combined tropical grooves with hard-bop harmonies and McCoy Tyner pianistics.

Percussion Master

Pedrito Martinez

Sun, 12/8 • 7pm

Miner Auditorium

The daringly inventive Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez has become a ubiquitous presence on the New York scene, and he brings the powerful punch of his NYC shows to the SFJAZZ Center. In just the past 12 years he’s played on more than 100 albums, including projects led by Paquito D’Rivera, Issac Delgado, Eliane Elias, Stefon Harris, Steve Turre, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Conrad Herwig, and Brian Lynch as well as Eddie Palmieri’s Grammy Award-winning CD Simpático. As a bandleader, Martinez has developed a captivating sound steeped in Afro-Cuban rumba and Santeria’s bata beats and chants, but also informed by North American rhythmic currents, an approach that The New York Times described as “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk.” Born in Havana, Martinez began performing at 11, working as a vocalist and percussionist with Cuban legends such as percussionist Tata Güines and legendary folkloric ensemble Los Muñequitos de Matanzas. Recruited by Canadian soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett for her group Spirits of Havana in 1998, he decided to stay in North America. Within two years he earned first place in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s first competition focusing on Afro-Latin hand drumming, and he’s been soaring ever since.

Only a unique confluence of cultural influences could produce an artist as strikingly original as Buika, who has earned a devoted cadre of fans and collaborators ranging from celebrated filmmaker Pedro Almódovar to musicians Seal, Rachelle Ferrell, Anoushka Shankar and Nelly Furtado. Born in Spain to parents in political exile from Equatorial Guinea, she grew up on the Spanish island of Mallorca. She was exposed to great jazz singers by her mother and forged a breathtaking, soul-drenched vocal style combining traditional Spanish coplas with the Gypsy laments of flamenco and jazz improvisation. A commanding performer with a husky, crushed-velvet voice, Buika saw her career catch fire in 2009 with El Último Trago, a collaboration with Cuban piano giant Chucho Valdés. And during Chick Corea’s recent month-long residency at the Blue Note in New York, Buika was featured in his stunning flamenco ensemble. This date marks the SFJAZZ Center debut by an important young figure in global music, voted one of the world’s “50 Great Voices” by National Public Radio.

Go Tell It — Jazzy Carols

City Church Little Big Band

Thu, 12/19 • 7:30pm

Miner Auditorium

For a syncopated blast of Yuletide joy, come hear the City Church Little Big Band, a rousing ensemble featuring such sterling Bay Area jazz musicians as saxophonists Harvey Wainapel and Kasey Knudsen, trumpeter Mike Olmos, bassist Marcus Shelby, trombonist Rob Ewing, drummer Jeff Marrs, pianist Adam Shulman and the soulful singers Tiffany Austin and Kenny Washington, a suave balladeer who swoops and scats. Organized at San Francisco’s ecumenical City Church, the Little Big Band serves up funky, finger-popping and stirring renditions of carols and seasonal songs like “Joy to the World,” “We Three Kings,” “Holy Night” and “Hark the Herald.” “Go Tell It!”, the title track of the CD the band released last year, struts in an irresistible “Killer Joe” groove. “Sugar Rum Cherry,” the band’s tart take on “Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy” from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, revels in the sound of early Ellington, with its mysterious tom-toms and swelling horn chords.

If Arturo Sandoval was only the most prodigious Cuban trumpeter of his generation, given to gravity defying improvisational flights, his spot in the jazz pantheon would be assured. But the six- time Grammy winning musician isn’t content with sending rival horn players running for cover. More than anything, Sandoval is a crowd-pleasing artist who has forged his own bold synthesis of bebop and Cuban styles. Windham Hill Winter Solstice

Sun, 12/22 • 4pm

Three captivating artists who rose to fame recording for the Windham Hill label come together to celebrate the wintry holiday season in the warm intimacy of Miner Auditorium. The dreamy Windham Hill “new age” image doesn’t do justice to the passionate singer, pianist, fiddler and guitarist Barbara Higbie, whom writer Derk Richardson described as “a jazz pianist who can write and sing like Laura Nyro and Carol King, a prize-winning folk fiddler who will interpret a John Coltrane tune through a French vocal or add her own lyrics to one of Django Reinhardt’s last compositions.” Higbie, whose musical associates have included Bonnie Raitt, Bobby McFerrin and Carlos Santana, put together this Winter Solstice ensemble with Grammy-nominated pianist Liz Story, whose original compositions draw on influences as various as Claude Debussy, Scott Joplin and Joni Mitchell, and renowned Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne. “It’s a show made for people who want to celebrate the season in their own unique way,” Higbie says.
