DEAR FRIENDS OF SFJAZZ

On Opening Night, January 23, 2013,

we launched the SFJAZZ Center with

two weeks of once-in-a-lifetime concerts

featuring the greatest jazz stars and top

jazz musicians from the Bay Area. It has

been a spectacular two years since that

opening: Over 250,000 people have

visited our two venues, and about half of

those audiences were visiting the Center for the first time; SFJAZZ Membership grew from

3,000 at groundbreaking to over 11,000 as of this writing; we completed our $64 million

dollar capital campaign, and received an addition challenge gift of $3 million to fund and

endowment for our own SFJAZZ Collective; and we hosted President Obama, who spoke

here in November of 2013.

January marks our 2nd Anniversary in the SFJAZZ Center and is also Member Appreciation

Month, with a number of special offerings for our members. We celebrate the New Year

(12/31-1/4) in the spirit of James Brown with his former music director Maceo Parker.

John Coltrane’s influence is felt with two giants: Pharoah Sanders and McCoy Tyner. Tenor

saxophone giant and Coltrane collaborator Sanders performs for four nights (1/8-11), and

to celebrate our second anniversary, the legendary Tyner (a member of Coltrane’s classic

quartet and who played for the opening of the Center) with fellow piano greats Geri Allen

and Kenny Barron (1/18).

SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Eric Harland closes January (1/19–2/1) in four different

settings over four nights ranging from his Voyager septet to the red-hot funk ensemble

Snarky Puppy to an interactive performance combining live music with professional video

gamers in a head-to-head Madden NFL football tournament on Super Bowl Sunday.

Valentine’s Day week brings a number of vocalists for a “Week of Love” with Tiffany

Austin (2/12), Patricia Barber (2/12), Mary Stallings (2/13), drummer Terri Lyne

Carrington’s Mosaic Project with Lizz Wright (2/14), and Jane Monheit (2/15). More

vocalists in February include Tuck & Patti (2/5-8), Kurt Elling (2/21-22) and blues/roots

icon Taj Mahal (2/26–3/1).

In March, “Global Sounds” features three consecutive nights of artists from around the

world, all making their SFJAZZ premieres: Portuguese fado legend Camané (3/19), Indo-

Canadian vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia (3/20), and the bhangra brass phenoms Red Baraat

(3/21). An “ECM Festival” (3/26–29) closes the month with artists from around the world

associated with the influential record label including Chris Potter (U.S.), Vijay Iyer (U.S.),

Egberto Gismonti (Brazil) and Tomasz Stanko (Poland).

Thank you for making the SFJAZZ Center what we believe to be the most vibrant place to

After decades of presenting concerts throughout the Bay Area, the doors to the SFJAZZ Center have been open for two years and we couldn’t be more pleased to share our commitment to the art form with such a generous community.

Creating the building was challenging, but getting here is easy—BART, MUNI, taxis, car services, bicycles and automobiles all serve SFJAZZ well. Once you’re in the lobby you’ll note that we have kept it open and clean so you can find your friends, check out the coming attractions on the video wall, buy some music, pick up your tickets and still have time to enjoy a libation from our partner restaurant South.

Speaking of tickets, if you ordered yours online you can use our mobile app to display your tickets on your smart phone, so there’s no need to print them out. If you’re like me and sometimes want the comfort of printed tickets—that’s fine too. You can print them at home, pick them up at the box office or we’ll mail them to you.

In the lobbies you’ll find a mix of ushers and volunteers that will assist you in finding your seat, answer questions you may have about directions or intermission, and offer you the program you have in your hands. Our house staff works to make your experience the best it can be, so please ask them for help and maybe even ask them what they’ve been listening to lately.

If your tickets put you on second floor or the terraces, you’ll make your way up the grand staircase to the second floor that features two original tile murals created by Sandow Birk and Elyse Pignolet. They depict landmark events in jazz history and a fictionalized cityscape made up of influential and important jazz venues from across the United States and San Francisco.

The more often you visit SFJAZZ, the deeper your personal connections to the music will be, and the better appreciation you’ll have for the richness that is, literally, built into the walls of your home for jazz.

ZAKIR HUSSAIN MAR 30–APR 5 The scion of a legendary Hindustani percussion dynasty, Zakir Hussain is universally acknowledged as the world’s greatest tabla virtuoso, a master of classical North Indian music who has collaborated with a glittering roster of international stars including Charles Lloyd, Mickey Hart and the legendary group Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin and violinist L. Shankar. Bay Area audiences have been fortunate to experience Hussain’s groundbreaking creative journey up close since he settled in the region to teach at San Anselmo’s Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in 1970. As a bandleader, a dogged promoter of Hindustani and South Indian Carnatic traditions, a Bollywood and Hollywood film composer, and a pioneer of world music and Indo-jazz fusion, he has blazed a mind-boggling array of musical trails. His programming as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director showcases a cross section of his creative pursuits.

ERIC HARLAND JAN 29–FEB 1 A leading drummer on the national scene, Texas-born Eric Harland has performed with jazz legends like Betty Carter, Joe Henderson and McCoy Tyner, and has played on more than 70 recordings with such artists as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby, Charles Lloyd and Zakir Hussain. In DownBeat’s 65th Annual Readers Poll, he was included in the short list of top drummers, in the company of masters like Roy Haynes and the late Elvin Jones. In 2010, Harland claimed DownBeat’s top spot in the Rising Star Drummer category of the Annual Critics Poll for the third straight year. His debut recording as a leader, Voyager, Live by Night, was released in 2011, and his latest album with Voyager, Vipassana, was released this year. This four-night residency presents a wide range of his stimulating music.

TERENCE BLANCHARD APR 9–12 Trumpeter Terence Blanchard is jazz’s foremost Renaissance man. A savvy bandleader, celebrated film composer, brilliant jazz writer and influential educator, the GRAMMY-winning New Orleans native is a creative force who sits at the apex of the contemporary jazz scene. After an apprenticeship with jazz legend Art Blakey, Blanchard co-led a quintet with saxophonist Donald Harrison during the height of the “young lion” era of the 1980s, releasing five acclaimed sessions before striking out on his own as a solo artist. He has composed over 40 movie scores, including soundtracks for the majority of director Spike Lee’s work, making Blanchard the most prolific jazz artist working in film. As an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, he is able to present programs that express the diversity of his vision.

ESPERANZA SPALDING APR 30–MAY 3Bassist, vocalist and composer Esperanza Spalding is the most inspiring ambassador in jazz, a spellbinding talent who has brought her sleek and soulful sound to a vast international audience. Through network television appearances and command performances at the White House, she has captured a new generation’s imagination while maintaining the highest standards as an improviser. Spalding’s singular status became clearly evident with her stunning breakthrough as the first jazz musician ever to win the coveted GRAMMY Award as Best New Artist. She has worked with jazz giants including Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Joe Lovano, and is one third of the virtuoso ACS Trio with pianist Geri Allen and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. But it is as a bandleader that she has truly made her mark, releasing a string of albums including the blockbusters Chamber Music Society and Radio Music Society.

C oming up in the world of Latin jazz, “I was usually the only female musician,” says Rebeca Mauleón, the veteran pianist, composer

and arranger whose two-fisted playing has fired up the music of Tito Puente, Carlos Santana, Joe Henderson and others. The rarity of women instrumentalists in her field wasn’t really an issue for Mauleón until she got involved in music education and became more attuned to the gender gap in jazz—and more passionate about raising the general awareness of “the contributions of women to the art form.”

That’s what Mauleón, SFJAZZ’s Director of Education, is doing throughout March, Women’s History Month, in a rich series of programs that celebrate women in jazz and blues and encourage young women and girls with a desire to play this improvised music.

In addition to lectures and performances showcasing the music of pioneering singers like Bessie Smith and Alberta Hunter, and influential but largely unsung instrumentalists and composers like

pianist-arrangers Lil Hardin Armstrong and Mary Lou Williams, Mauleón will host a March 21 Family Matinee devoted to the Great Ladies of Jazz and Blues featuring vocalist Pamela Rose and drummer Allison Miller. The March 22 concert by the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars features compositions by Mary Lou Williams, Melba Liston (the late, great bop trombonist) and Maria Schneider. Joining the band— 20 percent of the musicians are female—will be two excellent soloists: veteran trombonist Angela Wellman, founder of the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music, and tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, a young Chilean prodigy who won the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and released her debut recording last spring on Concord.

octet prepares new repertoire and interacts with the community by leading master classes and workshops. F ounded by Randall Kline in 1983 under the name Jazz in the City, SFJAZZ has become the world’s leading cultural institution

devoted to jazz and related forms of music, presenting over 300 performances each year at the new SFJAZZ Center and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

In addition to presenting the SFJAZZ annual season, the San Francisco Jazz Festival and SFJAZZ Summer Sessions, SFJAZZ supports a vibrant local music scene with Hotplate events and their free summer concerts at Stanford Shopping Center and Levi’s Plaza, and nurtures aspiring musicians with diverse education programs and performing ensembles.

In January 2013, SFJAZZ took the most audacious step in its evolution, opening the 36,000-square-foot, $64 million SFJAZZ Center on the corner of Fell and Franklin streets in the heart of San Francisco’s cultural corridor.

The first stand-alone structure in the country built specifically for jazz, the SFJAZZ Center was designed by award-winning San Francisco architect Mark Cavagnero, who worked with acoustician

Sam Berkow and theater designer Len Auerbach to create a main performance space with the acoustic quality of a great concert hall and the relaxed intimacy of a jazz club. That’s the Robert N. Miner Auditorium, a flexible, scalable venue that seats up to 700 people in close proximity to the musicians with superb sightlines and pristine acoustics tailored for jazz performance.

The 100-seat Joe Henderson Lab is the SFJAZZ Center’s street-level performance and rehearsal space, named for the late, great saxophonist and San Francisco resident, which also serves as the nerve center for the organization’s education department. Students of all ages use the Joe Henderson Lab as well as the practice rooms and cutting edge digital lab for workshops, rehearsals, master classes and private instruction.

“We wanted to create a community gathering place around jazz,” Kline says, “a place where jazz can do what it’s always done—grow and change. Now there’s a permanent place in San Francisco where it can flourish.”

MACEO PARKER

FUNKY NEW YEARRing in the New Year with the king of the funky saxophone and one of the primary architects of modern R&B, Maceo Parker. The altoist made his mark as an essential voice in the powerhouse horns backing James Brown, contributing classic funk solos on some of the Godfather’s iconic hits. He went on to join George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic during the ensemble’s most creative era and has contributed to albums and tours with artists including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Keith Richards, Dave Matthews Band and most extensively, Prince. Since the early 1990s, Parker has been spreading gospel of groove, a dedicated entertainer who believes in funk’s power to transform and heal. He brings his super-powered band back to SFJAZZ for an explosive New Year’s celebration, followed by a rare three-night residency.

Mingus and Max Roach. A creative force on the San Francisco jazz scene for the past decade, Shulman is a probing improviser and arranger deeply versed in the jazz tradition. The San Francisco native studied music at UC Santa Cruz and soaked up bandstand wisdom from the late, beloved piano master Smith Dobson before establishing his career as a first-call pianist and emerging bandleader. ECHOES WITH A FRIENDJazz giant McCoy Tyner recorded his 1974 solo piano classic Echoes of a Friend to celebrate his years with the John Coltrane Quartet and as homage to his great mentor. Now forty years

later, “Echoes With A Friend” celebrates McCoy’s music and artistry in an inter-generational concert featuring pianists Geri Allen and Kenny Barron. An enormous presence whose music has helped shape the evolution of jazz since the early 1960s, Tyner has written more than a dozen bona fide jazz standards and released dozens of enduringly vital albums. Carrying that influence forward, each performer will reveal McCoy’s impact through solo performances and with McCoy’s masterful rhythm section. This once-in-a-lifetime event commemorates the second anniversary of the SFJAZZ Center’s grand opening celebration, a historic week of performances that featured multiple nights of McCoy’s artistry.

TEJ TRIO—ART OF THE TRIO Eric Harland’s first week as Resident Artistic Director marks the SFJAZZ debut of his TEJ trio, featuring two virtuoso musicians with deep ties to the Bay Area, keyboardist Taylor Eigsti

and guitarist Julian Lage, in an exciting performance combining music and digital video. A musician of protean power and sublime taste, Harland turns every performance into a revelatory journey, and he’s in perfect company with Lage and Eigsti, who have played together since they were audaciously precocious adolescents on the Bay Area scene. The TEJ Trio provides both players with a larger sonic palette than usual, with Eigsti doubling on keyboards and Lage adding an array of effects to his warm guitar tone. The TEJ Trio is a step into the unknown, a vehicle for searching out unheard textures, extended forms and mysterious harmonies.

VOYAGER—LIVE BY NIGHTA quintet of masterful improvisers including pianist Taylor Eigsti and saxophonist Walter Smith III, Voyager focuses on Eric Harland’s stimulating work as a composer. More than a

consummate sideman, Harland is the rhythmic catalyst for many of the definitive jazz recordings of the past 15 years, a groove muse whose tidal-force trap work has inspired Greg Osby, Terence Blanchard, Charles Lloyd, McCoy Tyner, Dave Holland, and many other masters. What’s less known is that Harland is also an ambitious composer with a gift for designing extended forms, tunes that provide an ideal forum for volatile group interaction. His 2010 debut as a leader, Voyager: Live By Night, is a quintet session gleaned from a series of live performances, and the recently released Vipassana features a new set of revelatory originals.

SNARKY PUPPY—GRAND ENCOUNTERIt’s an incendiary meeting of the musical minds, as Eric Harland joins one of the hottest jazz/funk/R&B bands on the planet, Snarky Puppy, which won the 2013 GRAMMY for Best

R&B Performance. Led by bassist and composer Michael League, the Brooklyn-based band grew out of the celebrated jazz program at the University of North Texas. They’ve built a wildly devoted following by playing fresh groove music that smartly balances composition and improvisation, mixing rich jazz harmonies, raw funk and ripping electric guitar. In his role as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, Harland wanted to bring together his passions for music, sports and gaming, and this show presents a unique opportunity for fans of all three to come together as the musicians accompany and react to the action projected on the Miner Auditorium screen. One of the greatest drummers on the national scene and a huge sports fan, Harland has recently released his second album with the Voyager project, Vipassana.

keen intelligence of her original material. Quirky, insistently independent and emotionally cool, she’s attracted a dedicated following with her rigorous songwriting craft and sly, harmonically deft piano work. She won a Guggenheim Fellowship Award in 2003, making her the first singer-songwriter to ever receive the prestigious grant. CELEBRATING THE JAZZ OF JUDY GARLANDThe GRAMMY-nominated singer with the silken voice and supple sense of swing returns to SFJAZZ with Hello Bluebird, her tribute to the music of one of her greatest influences, the

legendary singer and actress Judy Garland. An self-assured artist possessing a remarkably versatile instrument, Monheit made a splash during her debut at the Thelonious Monk Institute’s 1998 International Vocal Competition. The stylistic breadth of her work shows a love for the Great American Songbook, the Brazilian pop of Ivan Lins and the hits of Paul Simon, Judy Collins, and others, so a celebration of the multi-faceted Garland is a match made in heaven. SWING TIMEPossessing a fat, buttery tone that harkens back to Ben Webster, Don Byas and Zoot Sims, tenor saxophone luminary Scott Hamilton was at the forefront of a new generation of young

artists that helped revitalize mainstream acoustic jazz in the mid-1970s. Hamilton and collaborators including trumpeter Warren Vaché, trombonist Dan Barrett and guitarist Howard Alden helped revive the sophisticated sound of small group swing, ushering in the “young lion” jazz renaissance. This concert is a rare and welcome return for an artist whose enormous impact continues to reverberate through the jazz world. He’s joined by tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, one of the brilliant players who followed in Hamilton’s footsteps and has honed a beautifully expressive sound informed by the tenor titans of the 1930s.

FROM PARIS WITH LOVEDelightfully cosmopolitan and seductively swinging, Paris Combo is as diverse and sophisticated as the city from which the band hails. Combining Gypsy swing with elements of flamenco, chanson and alt-cabaret, the quintet mixes in Latin and North African rhythms for good measure. Holding all the diverse elements

together is the sprightly vocalist Belle du Berry, who’s joined by Australian trumpeter/keyboardist David Lewis, jazz bassist Emmanuel Chabbey, French drummer François Jeannin, and Potzi, an Algerian Gypsy guitarist whose virtuosic style and natty appearance recalls Django Reinhardt. Regrouping last year for their first album since 2005, Paris Combo recently released 5, a session with all surreal humor, showmanship, and irresistible bounce that have come to define this entrancing quintet. They return to SFJAZZ following their sold-out appearance in Season 2.

FADO MASTERCamané is one of Portugal’s greatest proponents and interpreters of fado (fate), the passionate and melancholy music originally sung by early 19th century sailors in the brothels

and bars of Lisbon. One of the few prominent male singers in the genre whose popularity has surged with the emergence of contemporary artists like Ana Moura and Mariza, Camané established his career singing in fado clubs and theatrical revues in his late teens. With the esteemed singer-songwriter José Mário Branco as his producer, he captured the improvisational energy of the fado club on his 1995 acclaimed debut recording on EMI, Uma Noite de Fados (A Night of Fados). Camané toured Europe and recorded such popular albums as Na Linda da Vida, which showcased his increasingly personal interpretations of fado songs as well as his own compositions.

SFJAZZ isn’t waiting ‘til March to present the crackling drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and the latest incarnation of her Mosaic Project. That’s the all-female ensemble that won a Grammy in 2012 for a recording featuring a stellar cast of singers and instrumentalists—among them Diane Reeves and Nona Hendryx, bassist Esperanza Spalding and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen—playing original contemporary tunes and re-arranged classics merging jazz and R&B. On February 14, Carrington, who cut her teeth playing with masters like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, performs that music with a mostly female band that includes Hendryx and Jensen as well as the gospel-soaked singer Lizz Wright, pianist-keyboardist Rachel Z (another Shorter alumnus) and alto saxophonist Tia Fuller, a Berklee College of Music instructor who tours in Beyonce’s band and has worked with jazz lights like Jon Faddis and Rufus Reid.

Due partly to the success of these and other female jazz musicians in recent years, and to the efforts of institutions like Berklee and the Manhattan School of Music that have nurtured them, the tired old notion that women should play what Mauleón ironically calls “ladylike instruments”—piano, flute, violin—has faded. Things have changed. But not enough, she says. “The jazz world hasn’t caught up with the classical world in terms of advocacy and opportunity for women instrumentalists. The jazz paradigm is a little behind the times in terms of gender equality.”

SFJAZZ hopes to help remedy that with programs like the one March 28, “SFJAZZ Girls Day,” a free daylong workshop for female musicians ages 13–18 led by SFJAZZ guest faculty including bassist Ruth Davies, keyboardist Victoria Theodore, and drummer Beth Goodfellow. They’ll talk about improvisation and self-

advocacy, “how to become the best musician you can be, and make gender a non-issue.”

SFJAZZ’s February calendar features a batch of fine female singers, including Patti Cathcart of Tuck & Patti February 7 and 8. On the 12th, cool Patricia Barber performs in Miner Auditorium while Tiffany Austin sings the music of Nina Simone in the Joe Henderson Lab. The sublime Mary Stallings performs with pianist Eric Reed’s trio February 13. And Jane Monheit celebrates the music of Judy Garland on the 15th. The night before belongs to Carrington’s bracing Mosaic Project.

The month’s concerts and events “highlight all these amazing women who are playing at an optimal level, and reminds people they’re here,” Mauleón says. If it takes an all-female band or a special women’s issue of Downbeat to draw attention to these superior musicians, so be it for now. “We need to get to the point where we won’t have to have all-women ensembles or magazine issues. For me, that’s the future.”

WITH LOVE TO EARTHA KITT A feisty, knowing jazz singer with an affinity for Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington, René Marie made people sit up and listen when she emerged on the scene fully formed in the late 1990s, performing at clubs like the Blue Note in Washington, D.C. and recording a series of well-received records on Maxjazz. A quirky songwriter and outspoken civil rights activist, Marie was 42 when she began singing professionally. Her 10 albums include The Voice of My Beautiful Country, a 2011 collection of Americana—including her controversial version of

“The Star-Spangled Banner” swapping the lyrics for those of the so-called black national anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing”—and her spirited 2013 tribute to Eartha Kitt, I Wanna Be Evil, the project she brings to SFJAZZ.

Over the years, he has moved deftly from acoustic post-bop to the fringes of experimentalism, and formed the funk-fueled Underground in 1995 with guitarist Wayne Krantz, keyboardist Craig Taborn and drummer Nate Smith. Since the release of the band’s 2009 crowd-funded CD Ultrahang, Potter has signed to Manfred Eicher’s ECM Records and toured the world with guitar god Pat Metheny’s Unity Band project. He returns now to the Underground, giving the music an exciting new dimension.

BRAZILIAN JAZZ GIANTIn the vast shimmering universe of Brazilian music, Egberto Gismonti is a galaxy unto himself. A fearless musical searcher, Gismonti draws on a multitude of folkloric styles, creating music that’s both supremely

sophisticated and bracingly rustic. Ever since the premiere of his breakthrough composition “O Sonho” in 1968 at the career-making International Song Festival, Gismonti has been recognized as a visionary. He earned a vast international following in the mid-1970s through his work for ECM. Starting with Dança das Cabeças, his award-winning 1977 duo album with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos, he released a series of charged encounters with artists including Jan Garbarek, Colin Walcott, Charlie Haden, and Ralph Towner. His best-selling album, 1979’s Solo, is a breathtaking session on which he moves gracefully between multiple instruments. He revisits the solo setting for this intimate performance at SFJAZZ.

NEW YORK QUARTETDescribed by The New Yorker as “one of the world’s most original and inventive jazz trumpeters,” Polish trumpet legend Tomasz Stanko always keeps company with the most formidable young players on the

scene. He’s recorded a series of taut, lyrically expansive sessions for ECM, alternating between emerging European stars and heavyweight Gotham improvisers. The all-star New York Quartet he brings to SFJAZZ includes pianist David Virelles and drummer Gerald Cleaver, the core band featured on Stanko’s newest ECM release, Wisława, with bassist Reuben Rogers standing in for Thomas Morgan. No matter what the project, Stanko creates a sense of depth and spaciousness that’s long been associated with the ECM record label. Even at his most abstract he infuses each note with tenderness and sorrow, a master storyteller who never gets lost in his tale.
