Welcome to Holiday Season at the

SFJAZZ Center. We conceived the Center

as a community-gathering place for

artists and audiences to come together—

in an intimate yet open environment—to

experience music’s power to inspire. Since

we opened in January 2013, we have been

fortunate to have many unforgettable

moments, and the next two months hold the promise for yet more.

November (actually 10/29–11/1) opens with Chucho Valdés & Irakere, premiering a new

iteration of the historic Cuban band of the 1970s that broke new ground by mixing

Afro-Cuban jazz with traditional Cuban popular dance music. The Bay Area’s own Latin

Jazz legend John Santos celebrates his 60th birthday (11/1) with a one-time-only group

of musical guests tracing John’s history (including playing in the first concert of this

organization in 1983) as a bandleader and percussionist. Gypsy jazz guitar genius

Dorado Schmitt returns carrying forward the hot jazz of Django Reinhardt (11/5–8).

Also November 5–8 in the Joe Henderson Lab, Brazilian singer-songwriter Márcio Faraco

makes a rare U.S. appearance, evoking and expanding the bossa nova tradition. Brad

Mehldau Trio (11/13–14) delves deeper into expanding the jazz trio. Chris Thile makes

a rare solo appearance (11/13). We explore the jazz clarinet with a four-night intensive

“In the Reeds” (11/12–15) featuring some of jazz’s clarinet luminaries—David Murray,

Don Byron, Anat Cohen, Todd Marcus, Evan Christopher and the Bay Area’s Beth Custer.

One of our SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Directors, Esperanza Spalding, will present four

distinct programs (11/19–22) and the month closes out over Thanksgiving weekend with

one of the most intimate and warm duets to be heard, South African icon Hugh Masekela

and pianist Larry Willis. Their musical relationship goes back over 50 years. And that is

just November! Don’t forget to see our award-winning SFJAZZ High School All-Stars

(11/20) and SFJAZZ Hotplate with Mad Duran playing Lou Donaldson’s classic Blues Walk.

December is also chock-a-block with “only at SFJAZZ” shows including Western

swing-influenced county legend Merle Haggard at the Paramount (12/4), a drummer/

leader week (12/3–6), The Bad Plus Joshua Redman (12/10–13), four Holiday-themed

shows (12/16–20) to close out 2015, and on New Year’s Eve we can all groove into the

New Year with the James Brown inspired sound of Maceo Parker (12/31–1/3).

I want to give particular thanks to SFJAZZ Members, whose ranks quadrupled since

groundbreaking—from 3,000 to 12,000. The annual support of Members insures

our mission of offering the highest level of music and education programs—and the

continued growth of jazz.

and entertain audiences.

it takes contributions and volunteers to keep SFJAZZ programming and learning services

running at their best.

ERIC HARLANDJAN 6–10Drummer and composer Eric Harland is one of the most acclaimed percussionists in jazz, winning multiple DownBeat’s Critics Polls and working with jazz greats including McCoy Tyner, Charles Lloyd and Joe Henderson. This year’s residency focuses on his Voyager band performing tributes to Harland’s musical inspirations, including Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and singer/composer Gil Scott-Heron, SFJAZZ Poet Laurette Ishmael Reed with special guests.

ESPERANZA SPALDINGNOV 19–22The virtuosic bassist and soulful vocalist is the brightest young star in jazz, winning the GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist in 2011—an unprecedented feat for a jazz musician. She has become an international phenomenon, releasing two blockbuster albums as a leader and working with Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Joe Lovano. This season, she brings her newest project that allows her creativity to run wild.

ZAKIR HUSSAINMAR 31–APR 3Zakir Hussain is universally acknowledged as the world’s greatest tabla virtuoso, a master of classical North Indian music and a pioneer of world music and Indo-jazz fusion. His 2015-2016 programming as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director showcases the leading Indian artists working in jazz with guests including bass icon Dave Holland, and a week devoted to his celebrated Masters of Percussion ensemble.

TERENCE BLANCHARDFEB 19–28Trumpeter Terence Blanchard is jazz’s foremost Renaissance man. A savvy bandleader, celebrated film composer, brilliant jazz writer, and influential educator, the New Orleans native sits at the apex of the contemporary jazz scene. For his second season as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, he presents his new fully staged opera, Champion: An Opera In Jazz, based on the life of boxer Emile Griffith.

You’ve undoubtedly heard James Brown’s “Doing it to Death,” a.k.a. “Gonna Have a Funky Good Time.” It sounds like the world’s greatest party is happening in the recording studio as Brown shouts, “Maceo! Brother

Maceo! Got to blow!” And then Maceo Parker responds with his alto saxophone, stutter-stepping and bumping the beat, dodging between Brown’s vocalisms—like a snake, Maceo, playing those sneaky staccato phrases, reiterating them, like a chant, talking through his horn, turning his saxophone into an irresistible rhythm instrument. It was Brown doing it to death, but it was Maceo, too, creating the beat that has moved millions of bodies through the subsequent decades. It was the beat that George Clinton grabbed onto with Parliament/Funkadelic, the beat that helped set the stage for disco and hip-hop.

Great bandleaders hire great musicians. Miles Davis hired Wayne Shorter. Brown hired Maceo Parker. And the sound of

a great instrumentalist, with time, will permeate the musical environment. Parker’s sound is part of our environment, has been for decades. Without him, there is no Gary Bartz inciting a revolution with his NTU Troop, there is no Kenny Garrett free-styling with his horn, there is no Steve Coleman cueing diamond-hard grooves with his alto saxophone. Parker is a modest man; he shrugs off the notion that his sound reverberates through the modern history of jazz and popular music. Asked to describe his musical legacy, he talks about the audience: “You just want to give somebody a chance to relax and smile.”

He grew up in Kinston, North Carolina, where his parents ran church choir rehearsals at home. With brothers Melvin (a drummer, who would also join Brown’s band) and Kellis (a trombonist and future law professor), Maceo founded a group called the Junior Blue Notes, covering hits by Lloyd Price, Little Willie John and the Drifters. They did the Isley Brothers’ “Shout,” too.

Parker wore out a million records: Johnny Mathis, Sinatra, Ella, Boots Randolph and especially Ray Charles. His saxophone models were Stanley Turrentine and David “Fathead” Newman, as well as his high school music teacher, a Mr. Banks, who played in the manner of Sonny Stitt. Parker learned to imitate his teacher’s approach.

Nevertheless, he says, “The funky side was sort of overpowering the jazz and swing thing.”

Around this time, Parker attended a James Brown show and was astonished, he once told me: “Because I was still young and I didn’t understand how people who were supposed to be of stature in the community—school teachers and good church-

going folks—could be screaming and falling down in a frenzy and carrying on. That was what was more interesting to me—the audience rather than the music. And I said, ‘What is this thing he’s got?’ I said, ‘What the devil is it?’ He knew how to work the audience.”

Brown’s concerts were built around the same principle as a gospel show—raising the temperature higher and higher. The band was prepared: musically super-tight, sartorially immaculate. Starting in 1964, when Parker joined Brown—his tenure would extend off and on for nearly 25 years—he served as back-up emcee and back-up comic. He also played back-up to the guy who removed the ermine cape from Brown’s shoulders. “We used to call that `throwin’ the cape,’ “ Parker told me. “I must’ve done everything but front office work.”

A singular force in Cuban music for more than half a century, piano virtuoso Chucho Valdés is reuniting with a new version of Irakere, the legendary band that changed the course of Latin music in the 1970s and 80s. The son of celebrated pianist and Havana bandleader Bebo Valdés, Chucho was already recognized as the more formidable pianist of his generation when he launched Irakare in 1973 with a phenomenal cast that included Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval. The band’s unprecedented synthesis of folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythms, sacred drums, rock, funk, and jazz opened up vast new frontiers, and helped pave the way for the pervasively popular dance music known as timba. Similar to Valdés’s 2011 GRAMMY-winning Afro-Cuban Messengers album Chucho’s Steps, the new edition of Irakare is a vivid vehicle designed to introduce audiences to a blazing new generation of Cuban talent.

Far more than a master percussionist, John Santos is an invaluable educator and cultural activist, a keeper of the Afro-Caribbean flame steeped in Cuban and Puerto Rican folkloric traditions as well as salsa and Latin jazz. Born and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District, he’s been at the center of the Bay Area’s Latin music scene for nearly four decades. In addition to his roles as a musician, a visionary bandleader, and a respected educator, he is a noted historian of the music and has served on the Smithsonian Institution’s Latin Jazz Advisory Committee. Santos has played an essential role in expanding Latin jazz’s rhythmic lexicon beyond the foundational Cuban grooves, and his programming as one of SFJAZZ’s inaugural Resident Artistic Directors reflected his pan-Caribbean sensibility. With a soft voice echoing his beloved countryman João Gilberto and jazz hero Chet Baker, Brazilian singer, composer and guitarist Márcio Faraco has absorbed the pan-global influences of his adopted home in France, integrating his gentle samba and bossa nova with tinges of jazz, African music and Portuguese fado. His unique approach attracted the attention of legendary Brazilian singer/songwriter Chico Buarque, who opened doors for him back home with an invitation to participate on an Antonio Carlos Jobim tribute album with the likes of Maria Bethânia and Hermeto Pascoal. A scarce presence on Bay Area stages since making his US debut in 2000 opening for Toots Thielemans as part of the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Faraco is a quietly enthralling performer whose latest record, Cajueiro, fuses the Brazilian tradition with the gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt.

By the mid-90s he was a leading figure on the international Gypsy jazz scene, where he continues to represent the art form at its highest level. He’s joined by a cast of fiercely swinging compatriots, including

the brilliant jazz accordionist Ludovic Beier and violinist Pierre Blanchard, who was tapped by Grappelli himself as a worthy successor.

Since moving to the U.S. from her native Tel Aviv in 1996, Cohen has played everything from 1920s jazz to modern jazz, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango, Afro-Cuban jazz and classical music. Her latest release on Anzic Records, Luminosa, is a beguiling mixture of post-bop and the Brazilian choro tradition featuring her masterful quartet with keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Daniel Freedman joined by guest guitarist Romero Lubambo of the legendary Trio da Paz.

Two intrepid instrumentalists with deep Bay Area ties come together for an intimate evening of duets. Guitarist Will Bernard is a GRAMMY-nominated bandleader and founding member of all-star Bay Area jazz conglomerate T.J. Kirk (with Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola) as well as Galactic drummer Stanton Moore’s trio. A Berkeley native transplanted to Brooklyn, Bernard was a vital part of saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum’s landmark world-jazz Hieroglyphics Ensemble and the guitarist’s own massively funky quartet, Motherbug. With a musical palette that blends jazz, blues, Afro-Caribbean and contemporary classical music, clarinet master Beth Custer is one of the most vital composers on the Bay Area scene, having recorded over 30 albums. First gaining attention in the early 1980s with Club Foot Orchestra, Custer pilots a series of bracing ensembles, including her clarinet quartet Clarinet Thing and the funk-powered Beth Custer Ensemble.

Called “one of the world’s major clarinetists” by The Wall Street Journal, Evan Christopher carries on and expands the grand Creole clarinet tradition popularized by Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard and Omer Simeon. By the time the Long Beach-born Christopher moved to New Orleans in his early 20s, he already had a Louis Armstrong National Jazz Award under his belt, and soon found himself working with veteran trumpeter Al Hirt and members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band as well as New Orleans funk juggernaut Galactic. Following stints with the prestigious Jim Cullum Jazz band and leading his own Django à la Créole Gypsy swing band in Paris, Christopher has been a fixture with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and leads his own ensembles, bringing a sound rooted in history that celebrates the musical legacy of the Crescent City.

34-year-old Chris Thile is quite simply the world’s greatest living mandolinist, and a solo performance is an opportunity to hear him free of constraints and compromises—a setting where his imagination can run wild. A four-time GRAMMY-winner and founding member of contemporary bluegrass bands Nickel Creek and the Punch Brothers, he was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 2012 and has recently been named the new host of American Public Media’s iconic radio program A Prairie Home Companion. Thile toured the globe for over 15 years with Nickel Creek and formed the Punch Brothers in 2006 with four fellow string masters, bridging the borders of folk, bluegrass, pop, and contemporary classical music. He’s recorded six solo releases, including his 2013 Nonesuch album of J.S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, adapted for mandolin.

This evening brings a grand reunion of old friends, as South African trumpet icon Hugh Masekela and master jazz pianist Larry Willis perform in a rare duet setting.

Classmates at the Manhattan School of Music in the early 1960s, they were both fish out of water seeking their own musical paths. Encouraged by Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Harry Belafonte, Masekela combined his homeland’s music with hard bop and R&B, creating a hugely popular sound exemplified by his 1968 chart-topping hit “Grazing In the Grass.” Willis was studying theory and classical voice until Masekela encouraged him to focus on jazz.

He became a first-call accompanist, recording with everyone from Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan to Branford Marsalis and Roy Hargrove, while also making numerous excellent albums of his own. A few years ago they reunited in South Africa and ended up recording a four-disc duo project, Friends. Interpreting standards with warmth and boundless humanity, they offer a timeless take on ageless music.

One of country music’s enduring legends, GRAMMY-winning guitarist, fiddler and vocalist Merle Haggard has enjoyed a 50-year career as a giant of American songwriting and early originator of the California-bred take on country music called “the Bakersfield Sound.” For this special evening, the infamous writer of “Okie from Muskogee” performs a tribute to a pair of artists who profoundly affected his early life as a musician, fellow country music icon Johnny Cash and Western swing pioneer Bob Wills. An inmate at San Quentin prison in 1958, Haggard attended Cash’s first-ever prison performance, which was the inspiration for Haggard to finally clean up his act for good. The momentous career that followed saw Haggard inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994. He was named a Kennedy Center honoree in 2010.

Lauded by The New York Times for his “ability to bend jazz rhythm into abstract art and then steer it back into a groove,” drummer Ali Jackson is best known for his long-term tenure as the backbone of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Playing drums at age 2, Jackson was first exposed to music by acclaimed bassist Ali Jackson Sr., a noted collaborator with John Coltrane and Yusef Lateef. While still in elementary school, the young drummer met future employer Marsalis—an event that planted a seed for Jackson’s future career—and studies with drum legends Max Roach and Elvin Jones sharpened his musical instincts. Celebrating their new release, The Bad Plus Joshua Redman, iconoclastic trio The Bad Plus and modern saxophone giant Joshua Redman present an evening of spontaneous invention. The Bad Plus earned a broad following among young music fans through poker-faced interpretations of beloved rock and pop tunes and endlessly creative originals by pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King. Redman joined The Bad Plus for a European tour a few years back and quickly made himself part of their quirky Midwestern gestalt. He joins forces with the band again, though Anderson hesitates to call it a collaboration, noting that playing with the trio means “dealing with what the Bad Plus does, and Josh really got that and brought this incredible energy. It’s a lot of new personality for the music, but still The Bad Plus.”

More than a gospel institution, the Blind Boys of Alabama are a cultural force that has swept up musicians from every stylistic precinct, including Prince, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and Ben Harper. With five GRAMMY Awards (including one for lifetime achievement) and a sumptuous repertoire of soaring anthems, the group is a gospel standard bearer that has crossed over without adopting secular songs. Formed by a group of elementary students at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s, the quintet made a series of fine recordings in the post-war years that assured their place in the gospel pantheon. The Blind Boys have become known worldwide with celebrated albums including the star-studded Christmas release, Go Tell It on the Mountain, and their 2014 collaboration with blues great Taj Mahal, Talkin’ Christmas.

Parker brought all this experience with him when he joined George Clinton’s enterprise, and later when he went out on the road with Prince. And those countless shows with Brown prepared him for the last 25 years, during which he has toured incessantly as the leader of his own band, spreading his funk gospel. Everybody wants his sound. He has recorded with Keith Richards, Living Colour, De La Soul, Ani DiFranco, the Dave Matthews Band, even with James Taylor.

I once drove up and down California with Parker and his band, which included trombonist Fred Wesley and saxophonist Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis, his compatriots from Brown’s old group. And I can remember one night in San Diego when Parker lit up the bandstand on “Doing it to Death.” He stared straight down the length of his horn and raised his left eyebrow as he hit the first ripe note. He closed his eyes, angled his shoulders, crouched and jumped from foot to foot as he dodged through his staccato phrases, mixing in long fluid bebop lines and turning all these improvised melodies inside out and back onto themselves—all of this with that tart biting sound of his, of which Brown never could never get enough.

When Parker finished his solo, Wesley and Ellis cheered as if they had never heard him play before. Parker turned to his organist—Larry Goldings, then 22—and shouted, “Play that funk, baby. Get it in your neck.”

The crowd went nuts.

What the devil is it?

The outdoor artist terrace located at the back of the Lester Young Green Room on the SFJAZZ Center’s second floor is named “Space Is the Place Terrace” in honor of avant-garde jazz giant Sun Ra and the 1974

afrofuturist science fiction cult film he starred in, Space Is the Place. Produced by jazz musician and concert presenter Jim Newman, Space Is the Place was filmed primarily in Oakland and San Francisco, and concerns the salvation of black culture through space exploration, with Sun Ra’s music as the divine force that will save the people and usher them to a new future in outer space. ■
